I recall reading about Nyia a few years ago, and I could help but cry. What a horrific way for a child — for anyone — to die. As frequently as I’ve read stories of the nature, the depths of evil that adults commit against the most vulnerable and innocent among us still shakes me to my core. My heart hurts for this little girl.

I looked online for more coverage and found a story on the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review about the sentencing — to say this man exhibited no remorse is a gross understatement:

Page’s courtroom rant sent Nyia’s mother, Darlene Scott, into tears. She left without speaking to reporters. Scott was pregnant with Page’s child at the time of Nyia’s killing, and the couple was raising another of Scott’s children.

I was on the J train this morning and this mother (looked like she was in her 50s)was bragging about all the name brand gear she had on….gave me the only dirty look when I asked her if she felt she needed to cover herself in expensive labels because because she as a person had no substance. I guess you had to be there to see how sad it was that she was braggin to children about all her nice clothes…. or that she actually seemed to be so proud of it.

I understand, girl. Additionally, the article mentions that his lawyers claim he’s autistic. I’m not familiar enough with the condition to know what effects that it could have had on his behavior. I’ve seen programs on autism, and I was under the impression that autistic individuals aren’t usually violent, but, again, my knowledge of it is limited.

I live in the Pittsburgh area, and have followed this since it happened. The mother was asleep– this happened in the middle of the night in the dead of winter. He beat her then took her outside into some woods near their Section 8 house, and left this poor baby in the snow in nothing but a t shirt– no shoes or anything. Investigators said the abuse and beating was terrible and she suffered even more, and died eventually due to exposure. God rest her soul.

This happens with both men and women…. always has but never really spoken about and usually only seen in local media. A couple was just charged with molesting a 7 year old child in Indianapolis recently and Oprah unbelievably featured an episode on women that molest children earlier this year SMH
