Oprah, who has been ridin’ hard for Obama, issued the following statement after rumors were flying that she wouldn’t let Governor Palin get any shine on her show:
“There has been absolutely no discussion about having Sarah Palin on my show. At the beginning of this Presidential campaign when I decided that I was going to take my first public stance in support of a candidate, I made the decision not to use my show as a platform for any of the candidates. I agree that Sarah Palin would be a fantastic interview, and I would love to have her on after the campaign is over.”
Oprah’s excuse sounds suspect. It would have been nice for her to just say, I want Obama to win and I won’t allow my show to be used as a forum to promote such stupidity and trash.

Well, it’s obvious that, since she wants Obama to win and is actively supporting him, that she wouldn’t want to have the other candidates on her show. That’s a no brainer. And, it’s her show, so it’s her right. It will be fun watching Palin on her show if the Republicans win, though!

Here’s the good news: Women have become so politically powerful that even the anti-feminist right wing — the folks with a headlock on the Republican Party — are trying to appease the gender gap with a first-ever female vice president. We owe this to women — and to many men too — who have picketed, gone on hunger strikes or confronted violence at the polls so women can vote. We owe it to Shirley Chisholm, who first took the “white-male-only” sign off the White House, and to Hillary Rodham Clinton, who hung in there through ridicule and misogyny to win 18 million votes.
But here is even better news: It won’t work. This isn’t the first time a boss has picked an unqualified woman just because she agrees with him and opposes everything most other women want and need. Feminism has never been about getting a job for one woman. It’s about making life more fair for women everywhere. It’s not about a piece of the existing pie; there are too many of us for that. It’s about baking a new pie.
Selecting Sarah Palin, who was touted all summer by Rush Limbaugh, is no way to attract most women, including die-hard Clinton supporters. Palin shares nothing but a chromosome with Clinton. Her down-home, divisive and deceptive speech did nothing to cosmeticize a Republican convention that has more than twice as many male delegates as female, a presidential candidate who is owned and operated by the right wing and a platform that opposes pretty much everything Clinton’s candidacy stood for — and that Barack Obama’s still does. To vote in protest for McCain/Palin would be like saying, “Somebody stole my shoes, so I’ll amputate my legs.”
This is not to beat up on Palin. I defend her right to be wrong, even on issues that matter most to me. I regret that people say she can’t do the job because she has children in need of care, especially if they wouldn’t say the same about a father. I get no pleasure from imagining her in the spotlight on national and foreign policy issues about which she has zero background, with one month to learn to compete with Sen. Joe Biden’s 37 years’ experience.
Palin has been honest about what she doesn’t know. When asked last month about the vice presidency, she said, “I still can’t answer that question until someone answers for me: What is it exactly that the VP does every day?” When asked about Iraq, she said, “I haven’t really focused much on the war in Iraq.”
She was elected governor largely because the in*****bent was unpopular, and she’s won over Alaskans mostly by using unprecedented oil wealth to give a $1,200 rebate to every resident. Now she is being praised by McCain’s campaign as a tax cutter, despite the fact that Alaska has no state income or sales tax. Perhaps McCain has opposed affirmative action for so long that he doesn’t know it’s about inviting more people to meet standards, not lowering them. Or perhaps McCain is following the Bush administration habit, as in the Justice Department, of putting a job candidate’s views on “God, guns and gays” ahead of competence. The difference is that McCain is filling a job one 72-year-old heartbeat away from the presidency.
So let’s be clear: The culprit is John McCain. He may have chosen Palin out of change-envy, or a belief that women can’t tell the difference between form and content, but the main motive was to please right-wing ideologues; the same ones who nixed anyone who is now or ever has been a supporter of reproductive freedom. If that were not the case, McCain could have chosen a woman who knows what a vice president does and who has thought about Iraq; someone like Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison or Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine. McCain could have taken a baby step away from right-wing patriarchs who determine his actions, right down to opposing the Violence Against Women Act.
Palin’s value to those patriarchs is clear: She opposes just about every issue that women support by a majority or plurality. She believes that creationism should be taught in public schools but disbelieves global warming; she opposes gun control but supports government control of women’s wombs; she opposes stem cell research but approves “abstinence-only” programs, which increase unwanted births, sexually transmitted diseases and abortions; she tried to use taxpayers’ millions for a state program to shoot wolves from the air but didn’t spend enough money to fix a state school system with the lowest high-school graduation rate in the nation; she runs with a candidate who opposes the Fair Pay Act but supports $500 million in subsidies for a natural gas pipeline across Alaska; she supports drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve, though even McCain has opted for the lesser evil of offs***** drilling. She is Phyllis Schlafly, only younger.
I don’t doubt her sincerity. As a lifetime member of the National Rifle *****n., she doesn’t just support killing animals from helicopters, she does it herself. She doesn’t just talk about increasing the use of fossil fuels but puts a coal-burning power plant in her own small town. She doesn’t just echo McCain’s pledge to criminalize abortion by overturning Roe vs. Wade, she says that if one of her daughters were impregnated by rape or incest, she should bear the child. She not only opposes reproductive freedom as a human right but implies that it dictates abortion, without saying that it also protects the right to have a child.
So far, the major new McCain supporter that Palin has attracted is James Dobson of Focus on the Family. Of course, for Dobson, “women are merely waiting for their husbands to *****ume leadership,” so he may be voting for Palin’s husband.
Being a hope-a-holic, however, I can see two long-term bipartisan gains from this contest.
Republicans may learn they can’t appeal to right-wing patriarchs and most women at the same time. A loss in November could cause the centrist majority of Republicans to take back their party, which was the first to support the Equal Rights Amendment and should be the last to want to invite government into the wombs of women.
And American women, who suffer more because of having two full-time jobs than from any other single injustice, finally have support on a national stage from male leaders who know that women can’t be equal outside the home until men are equal in it. Barack Obama and Joe Biden are campaigning on their belief that men should be, can be and want to be at home for their children.
This could be huge.

I don’t like his stance on immigration, but McCain has the same stance. The cost of everything is going up in America but the wages aren’t. He gave her a 40 minute speech and a teleprompter and heard many say that on the basis of her ability to speak someone else’s words extremely well that she is a valid candidate. He is now having her pop up now and then at campaign rallies to smile, shake hands and again read with a teleprompter parts of the one speech she knows. In between these appearances, the McCain campaign hides her away to avoid having her say anything unscripted.
When I was a kid, Disneyland had a theater where a robot made to look like Abraham Lincoln walked on stage and gave a 10 minute speech. He looked incredibly realistic and the performance was entirely convincing. After the speech, there would be thunderous applause from the audience. The robot would then walk off the stage.
McCain’s strategy with Palin is to treat her just like that Disneyland robot. It tells me that, beyond being able to read from a teleprompter, she does not have the skills necessary for a national campaign. That this strategy seems to be working so far also tells me something sad about the press – which should have found a way to demand access – and the public at large.

Do you know why most of African-American supports Democratics? Because they always suffers when GOP take the office. Who to be blamed? Tax breaks aren’t going to send companies offs*****, unions will. They simply go where there is cheaper labor. Americans need to retrain themselves. Factory jobs will not be here forever unless you are willing to make the same labor wage that someone in a third world country makes. You need to retrain yourself to learn computers, multimedia, and technology. And, McCain has plans for training programs for out of work Americans.

He voted 19 times against the minimum wage for people who are struggling just to make it to the next day. That’s not change. That’s more of the same.
Raising the minmum wage won’t do a bit of good, it will just raise prices. If you are a grocery store and have to pay your employees more, you are just going to charge more for food. So, your higher wages, will buy you the same or less.

And when he says he’ll continue to spend $10 billion a month, when the Iraqis have a surplus of nearly $80 billion, that’s not change. That’s more of the same.
McCain is not going to keep troops there if its not necessary. Only he has the judgement to make this decision about troop levels. If troop levels made the difference between losing the war in Iraq and winning why should we let Obama make that decision when he knows nothing about the military, and Biden even wanted to divide Iraq in three separate countries.

The choice in the election is clear. These times require more than a good soldier. They require a wise leader. A leader who can change — the change that everybody knows we need.
McCain is more than a soldier, he has been a leader in congress, and p*****ed several pieces of major legislation. Obama contributed in a minor way to legislation, but nothing major.

Barack Obama will transform the economy by making alternative energy a national priority and in the process creating 5 million new jobs and finally, finally freeing us from the grip of foreign oil. That’s the change we need.
How will this transform the economy. He is just going to create subsidies for companies to develop alternative energy. This will take 10-20 years to develop. Its not like poof ok now that Obama is president we no longer need oil. McCain is the one who actually is putting incentives out there to develop better fuel batteries for automobiles to run on alternative fuels.

Barack Obama knows that any country that out-teaches us today will out-compete us tomorrow. That’s why he’ll invest in the next generation of teachers and why he’ll make college more affordable. That’s the change we need.

The McCain campaign has vigorously denied a report in the National Enquirer magazine that the Republican’s vice-presidential pick, Alaska Governor, Sarah Palin has had an extramarital affair with her husband’s business partner.
The story, which appeared just hours before Governor Palin was due to address the Republican convention, was branded ” scurrilous” by the chief strategist, Steve Schmidt. He said it was totally untrue.
“The smearing of the Palin family must end. The allegations contained on the cover of the National Enquirer insinuating that Gov. Palin had an extramarital affair are categorically false. It is a vicious lie,” said Mr Schmidt.
The magazine has a reputation for digging dirt on politicians lives.
It insisted that Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards was having an extramarital affair and had had a child with his lover, while his wife was ill with breast cancer.
The allegations were denied for months until the National Enquirer finally got pictures of the duo meeting in a hotel in Los Angeles.

The ladies of Heart have contacted the McCain/Palin campaign and asked them to immediately cease and desist from using their song “Barracuda.”
Unfortunately for the Wilson sisters, “as the song is licensed for public performance under a blanket fee,” and since the McCain campaign paid those fees to use the song, there is nothing Heart can do about its use. But there is a bright side to this story. Roger Fisher, the band’s former guitarist and co-writer of the song said that:
…he strongly endorsed the Democratic ticket, and would donate a portion of royalties he receives from the Republicans’ airing of “Barracuda” to the campaign of Sen. Barack Obama.

McCain has to hold OH, FL, CO, NV, and VA (all serious toss-ups right now). Not impossible, but unlikely. Obama just has to win one of theses states. This is where organization, ground game, enthusiasm will come into play. Some may mock Obama’s stadium acceptance venue, but I think it was a stroke of genius. With opening the venue to (~50 – 60k) ordinary citizens and having volunteerism the criteria for getting a ticket, this may have swung CO in the Obama column. Can’t wait for the next CO poll.

I disagree that Obama has made a mistake with his VP pick. McCain cares more about winning, which IMO is the reason he picked a woman, than the well-being of the country. Yes, there is a lot of hoopla, both good and bad, about Palin but it might backfire in the long run. I think it’s going to come down to whether or not America is going to be willing to give a black man the opportunity to govern the country. McCain and Palin represent many things that citizens are critizen Bush for. I believe the hesitancy some have to support him has to do with race. I read a caption on CNN this morning saying that Republican women in Florida plan to boycott Oprah’s show if she doesn’t have Sarah Palin on. Now these are women who belong to a political party that have put Obama down for being more of a celebrity than politician and because he has many celebrity endorsements. I don’t hear anyone threatening to protest because Oprah’s not invited John McCain on her show. I don’t see or hear anyone threatening to boycott George Clooney’s movies or any white celebrity because they support Obama. I hope Oprah tells them to kiss her azz and to please not watch HER show. She hasn’t had Obama on her show since he announced his candidacy. I hope Oprah doesn’t back down either.

CHEAPER DRUGS: Lowering Drug Prices. John McCain will look to bring greater competition to our drug markets through safe re-importation of drugs and faster introduction of generic drugs.
CHRONIC DISEASE: Providing Quality, Cheaper Care For Chronic Disease. Chronic conditions account for three-quarters of the nation’s annual health care bill. By emphasizing prevention, early intervention, healthy habits, new treatment models, new public health infrastructure and the use of information technology, we can reduce health care costs. We should dedicate more federal research to caring and curing chronic disease.
COORDINATED CARE: Promoting Coordinated Care. Coordinated care – with providers collaborating to produce the best health care – offers better outcomes at lower cost. We should pay a single bill for high-quality disease care which will make every single provider accountable and responsive to the patients’ needs.
GREATER ACCESS AND CONVENIENCE: Expanding Access To Health Care. Families place a high value on quickly getting simple care. Government should promote greater access through walk-in clinics in retail outlets.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: Greater Use Of Information Technology To Reduce Costs. We should promote the rapid deployment of 21st century information systems and technology that allows doctors to practice across state lines.
MEDICAID AND MEDICARE: Reforming The Payment System To Cut Costs. We must reform the payment systems in Medicaid and Medicare to compensate providers for diagnosis, prevention and care coordination. Medicaid and Medicare should not pay for preventable medical errors or mismanagement.
SMOKING: Promoting The Availability Of Smoking Cessation Programs. Most smokers would love to quit but find it hard to do so. Working with business and insurance companies to promote availability, we can improve lives and reduce chronic disease through smoking cessation programs.
STATE FLEXIBILITY: Encouraging States To Lower Costs. States should have the flexibility to experiment with alternative forms of access, coordinated payments per episode covered under Medicaid, use of private insurance in Medicaid, alternative insurance policies and different licensing schemes for providers.
TORT REFORM: P*****ing Medical Liability Reform. We must p***** medical liability reform that eliminates lawsuits directed at doctors who follow clinical guidelines and adhere to safety protocols. was willing to give Gov. Palin the benefit of the doubt. I was hoping she would come out to introduce herself and provide substance solutions to America’s problems – economic and national security.
I was hoping she would put forth her vision for America and how to effectively *****ist in leading us in this 21st century.
But instead she was a let down. Her answer to defending her accomplishments was to try and diminish Sen. Obama’s strong legislative record and accomplishments. She stayed on the attack, lying and using vicious, divisive, gutter attacks. Basically, she proved and defined herself as someone who’s deeply rooted in the old failed and dirty politics America have seen year after year.
She has no real plan to make the American people lives better on the very serious issues we are facing – education, health care, mortgage crisis, poverty, energy crisis, job losses, etc.
She has proven, as have McCain, that she is committed to continuing the failed policies of Bush. And this is a shame since Bush has the lowest approval rating ever – 26%. …this is a shame since 80 % of the American people believe the country is on the wrong track and people are desperately seeking a new and better direction. This is a shame since America has lost it’s creditability abroad and neither McCain nor Palin has any solutions to offer the American people and our allies around the world. They are so “out-of-touch” on the needs that this nation is facing right now in this defining moment in history. They just don’t get it. They truly don’t have real solutions to fix this nation’s serious problems.
It’s time for the American people to get it right and NOT vote for McCain-Palin, instead vote for change. It’s time for this country to turn the page and seek a new and better future for ourselves and our children. It’s time for REAL change in Washington, it’s time to elect Barack Obama for president !

Matt Drudge, as usual, set the mainstream media in motion yesterday with a story about how “Oprah’s staff is sharply divided on the merits of booking Sarah Palin.”
Winfrey denied the report in statement, and said: “At the beginning of this presidential campaign, when I decided that I was going to take my first public stance in support of a candidate, I made the decision not to use my show as a platform for any of the candidates. I agree that Sarah Palin would be a fantastic interview, and I would love to have her on after the campaign is over.”
Indeed, that’s been Winfrey’s position ever since backing Obama, as I wrote back in December 2007:
But as the saying goes, the presidential campaign is a marathon, not a sprint. Since Winfrey has displayed her allegiance to Obama, she has said publicly that it would be unfair to bring any other candidates on the show.
So when the campaign is heating up next fall, and the public is especially interested, Winfrey presumably will not have the Democratic or Republican presidential candidates sitting across from her on the couch, as she did in 2000, when both George W. Bush and Al Gore appeared.
But this nine-month-old fact hasn’t stopped news outlets from following Drudge with breathless headlines. ABC News actually goes with, “Is Oprah Biased? Host Won’t Interview Palin.”
Well, if by biased you mean she’s enthusiastically endorsing one candidate, the answer’s yes. So what’s the question? Is ABC News asking if she’s biased against women? Or biased against Republicans? On the 2008 race, Winfrey’s clearly partisan. And because of that fact, Winfrey has said all along that she wouldn’t bring either Democrat or Republican candidates on the show this fall.
Winfrey never endorsed a candidate before, and took a professional risk by publicly supporting (and campaigning for) Obama, leaving open the possibility of alienating viewers.
That was evident during the primaries, as Hillary Rodham Clinton supporters often voiced their frustration in the comments board on Winfrey’s website. It was reported that her ratings may have suffered. And now, instead of competing with other talk shows for an exclusive interview with the first woman on the Republican party ticket, Winfrey’s already taken herself out of the race for ratings gold.
