Did Users Flee To Facebook Because MySpace Was “Too Ghetto”?

Facebook versus Myspace

Research among techie circles has produced an argument that Facebook’s success is due in part to white folks leaving “the ghetto” of MySpace. We thought this made for a good discussion piece. Pop the hood for more on this theory and to weigh in

A new analysis by Microsoft researcher Danah Boyd argues that Facebook’s success is due in part to “white flight” from MySpace.

We were talking about the social media practices of her classmates when I asked her why most of her friends were moving from MySpace to Facebook. Kat grew noticeably uncomfortable. She began simply, noting that “MySpace is just old now and it’s boring.” But then she paused, looked down at the table, and continued.

“It’s not really racist, but I guess you could say that. I’m not really into racism, but I think that MySpace now is more like ghetto or whatever.”

So begins the book chapter White Flight in Networked Publics — How Race and Class Shaped American Teen Engagement with MySpace and Facebook (pdf) part of the forthcoming book Digital Race Anthology.

Danah Boyd, author of the chapter, stirred up controversy once before, in 2007, by noting that during the period beginning in 2006 when teens began to flock to Facebook, teens’ preference for either MySpace or Facebook appeared to fall along lines of race and class.

Subsequent statistical analyses of the characteristics of users of online social networks by researchers, marketers and bloggers, she notes in her latest work, backed up her claims that white and asian teens who belonged to higher socieconomic strata (and who aspired to college, with which Facebook at the time was associated) were attracted to Facebook, while latino, black and working-class teens tended to opt for MySpace. Boyd notes in her chapter:

Analysts at two unnamed marketing research firms contacted me to say that they witnessed similar patterns with youth at a national level but they were unable to publicly discuss or publish their finding, but scholars and bloggers were more willing to share their findings.

Boyd’s current work argues that MySpace took on many of the aspects of a “digital ghetto” in the minds of teens who used the site, leading to “white [and asian] flight” from the site, analogous to the white flight from the city to the suburbs that took place in the U.S. beginning in the 1960′s. Boyd continues:

Consider the parallels. In some senses, the first teens to move to the “suburbs” were those who bought into a Teen Dream of collegiate maturity, namely those who were expressly headed towards dorm- ‐based universities and colleges. They were the elite who were given land in the new suburbs before plots were broadly available. The suburbs of Facebook signaled more mature living, complete with digital fences to keep out strangers. The narrative that these digital suburbs were safer than the city enhanced its desirability, particularly for those who had no interest in interacting with people who were different.

Boyd argues that MySpace’s inability to deal with spammers added to the feeling of urban blight that overtook the site, leaving derelict profiles “covered in spam, a form of digital graffiti… As MySpace failed to address these issues, spammers took over like street gangs.”

Subsequent media coverage of the “death of MySpace” was a direct result of this flight, says Boyd. For example, she cites a 2009 New York Times article that was entitled “Do You Know Anyone Still on MySpace?” despite the fact that at the time Facebook and MySpace has roughly equal numbers of users.

“The New York Times staff was on Facebook and assumed their readers were too,” concludes Boyd.

Intriguingly, the comments under that news item support Boyd’s thesis:

“My impression is that Myspace is for the riffraff and Facebook is for the landed gentry.”

“Compared to Facebook, MySpace just seems like the other side of the tracks – I’ll go there for fun, but I wouldn’t want to live there.”

We know that was a long read but we didn’t want to leave anything out. Clearly there’s some statistical research to back up this point. How many folks still use MySpace? If you’re a former MySpacer, why did you leave? Do you think Facebook is better? What about Facebook makes it better?

loka here punk im a myspace gang sta and we riding on these facebook fools…. ya heard…!!!

  • Lady_Star

    Lol

  • samech

I was never a facebook or My space person, where ever we are, they are not……simple, right?! Now it’s twitter, I can read between the lines, they want a site for themselves……….ok! I don’t even have a twitter account or never been on there…….ok, i get it.

  • Lady_Star

Ppl r taking the Internet way too seriously!! Lol!! SMH

  • Ms Bossi3

I never had a myspace account because the impression of ghetto. I even hesitated to start my FB page back in 2008 but, I observed it and found a better class of people on it. However, now 2 years later I’m starting to feel like everyone on myspace is now on FB and its becoming ghetto and childish too.

  • Human Racist

    I concur!

  • kiapooh

    uno?

  • LaDiva

Myspace got played out — on to the next big thing til that thing gets bored and rundown and then a new thing will replace it. That’s the name of the game.

  • denne

i just got too busy to keep up with having a fresh myspace page. more of my friends were on facebook anyway so it was easier to communicate there. and myspace games weren’t working on my mac.

  • Martinigal

DWL @White flight on social networking! I’ve never been on myspace, but my friends told me everything goes, at time the pics are just disgusting and it’s one the reason why she jump ship. Facebook is the only social network I’m on.

  • @PrettyXclusive

I don’t believe in the white flight theory. I was on Facebook when it first started and it was only for college students which is how I got on. I do believe Myspace did become very ghetto and now ex-Myspacers are flocking to Facebook and making it ghetto. I am appalled when I see ghetto statuses with curse words and such and I always think um this is not Myspace. N

  • Why So Serious?

So, what, they’re gonna create a social networking site strictly for white’s an asians..bc that’s where i see it heading. Like black people, and latinos don’t reserve the right to be on Myspace and Facebook. *smh..whatever

Throwing race into the equation was stupid. Me and my “ghetto’ friends discuss it all the time blackplanet was for middle school, myspace was for high school, and facebook is for college and above.
it’s just a matter of a growing trend. If you don’t want ghetto friends on your page then don’t accept them.simple as that.

  • http://www.bossipsucks.com PUUUUH-LEEEEASE!

My MAMA is of facebook! She would never have been on myspace tho.

  • VA Lovah

I co-sign with everything Ms Bossi3 said. I’ve given up my fb account now cause the same people that was on the space are now on the book.

  • drenk

i heard about this on talk radio once, said it was like e-white flight

luckily i dont have either one of those, under the radar is where i like to be

  • well…

I have both but rarely use either, though I will entertain facebook, sometimes. I really starte to leave myspace not because it was ghetto but because it was young. A lot of my cousins who where like 11 had pages (crazy, made profile pages) and I got a lot of request from people who might be the craigslist killer, eventhough my page was completely private except for a profile pic. I got to much spam, a non-friend request and just stopped using it but I have only got like 4 non friend request on facebook….no white flight her because I am black. but I got tire of all the jacked up people asking for friend request over and over again which I have not had that problem to date with facebook. Though facebook will pull a pic in a second if it is off.

  • Somali Ninga

    wow this is ridiculous

  • that damn sh#$ disturber

myspace is ghetto and the new bp booty call, yuck! but one thing myspace has over fb is the page layouts. i miss all the layout competitions everyone had for the best page. i’m not on either much but everyone commenting on their everyone thought every five minutes got old real quick!!!

  • I Know Everything

Myspace appeals to a younger age group where as facebook is appealing to a more mature crowd. Once facebook is flooded with younger users it will mimick myspace. Race is not the issue and ghetto and black are not synonyms.

  • Lisa

Myspace was just junkie and a tad bit ghetto. I think people flocked to Facebook because you can communicate and interact much better with “friends” than on Myspace. After a while, it became boring.

  • ladysteele

actually when fb 1st started u could only join if u were in College and had a college email address to register with thats why most people went to myspace plus u could customize more then myspace became full of spammers and wanna be artist, add trains and fb got smart and opened up their requirements so more people immediately jumped on the fb bandwagon

  • sholla21

I never had a MyS.p.a.c.e page. I always thought MS pages looked ugly and messy. I didn’t like the layout.

I create my FB page in Grad school. It was all the rage. Every was on it.
It had a lot of fun applications and I used it as a tool to communicate with the student body when I was part of the student government.

Now that I’m no longer in school, I barely ever visit my FB.

I created a TWITTER page (just to reserve the “name”, hey you never know when you might need it and I don’t want to wake up to find that I can’t use my own name because someone jacked it before me) but I never use it.

ghetto… please , tacky maybe but you white bytches can be just as ghetto as the next… its tacky thats what it is.. not ghetto , i dont do either one!

  • Niasia

QActually when FB first started you could only have an account with a .edu in your email. And of course I had already graduated college and couldn’t remember my email address. So MS it was. But now I am on FB…I think on either site your experience will be however your group of friends are…all of my cousins are on FB now and um yeah…I am now on twitter.

  • Pisces82

I’ve been on facebook for over a year, but I opened a Myspace account a few years ago just to look at personal pics from people I knew. My page was basically a blank slate lol. Heck, I can’t even remember my username or password since I only used it twice. Myspace just seemed too unorganized, while Facebook seems more structured.

  • http://twitter.com/breuntah Breanta

I left myspace bc it did become “ghetto/childish”. I started a facebook profile back in 2006 when I started college. I wasn’t really on it much because it seemed “boring” at the time. I couldn’t decorate my profile or add music to it so I was like oh well; but now I only use facebook. In comparison myspace seem like a place for young and immature people.

  • http://lecoil.tumblr.com/ Educated Goon

Nope, we fled to Facebook because myspace was annoying. Facebook is a better design, less annoying gadgets & music.. and you dont get friend request from people you don’t know (I get friend request from people I don’t know on facebook, but they are usually people that go to my school or went to my highschool. I know there face but I do not know them personally).

Besides.. Nobody likes there page being spammed by wanna-be rappers everyday. Myspace was just a fail… it was cool back in the day though.

  • La

I switched over to FB because they block myspace from my job. I think honestly most people can access fb at the work place. I also like the features FB provides. You can set who on your fb can see your pics, post etc. Myspace you couldn’t.

    Thats why I jump ship.

  • http://lecoil.tumblr.com/ Educated Goon

I had some good times on my-space back in middle school & high school.. Those were the good ‘ol days,I admit.

I got a facebook, but I rarely be on there.. I just lurk females pictures and click “i like” then log off. I don’t send folks messages and sh*t… if you wanna talk call me.

  • Ifeelsorry4ya

Interesting, I was just reading an article stating that since the arrival of Facebook, divorces have increased, lol. They also go on to say they have used comments made on FB in court as evidence:

Prospective divorcees may want to avoid their social media accounts, at least until their settlements have been finalized. A recent survey by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers found that 81% of top divorce attorneys have used or faced evidence pulled from social networking sites during court proceedings.

Facebook, according to 66% of AAML respondents, is the primary source of this type of evidence. MySpace follows with 15%, Twitter’s next at 5% and other choices were used by 14% of respondents.

  • http://* Kristina

M.y.s.p.a.c.e. just appeals to a younger crowd I think. And it’s all about how many friends you have, hence me getting 15 requests from ppl I didn’t know just so they could have more friends and look cool and important. I opened my MS page in 2006 and my FB in 2007 but I didn’t use my FB til a couple months ago cuz none of my friends or family were on there. FB is truly about networking and keeping in touch with ppl you know which is why they have ppl go by their real names and not stupid nicknames like on MS.

  • http://lecoil.tumblr.com/ Educated Goon

The only thing more ghetto than Black Planet..was BEBO.

  • JasmineL

my.space was boring and there were too many ppl trying to get at one another. FB was more of a friend to friend site. Then FB started to feel like myspace and I felt like whats the point. I stopped using both. I now have a twitter and love it!

  • Melanie

Never had myspace, had to delete FB.It became annoying and then when your mom joins, its a done deal. All on my page asking me what does LLS,LMBO and loud pack mean? smh…

  • lilbabiphat2004

i didnt read the article but from reading the title i think its all ghetto if you ask me! not the sites itself but the actual users are ghetto. putting their business out there. SMH!!! Thats why i dont have a mysp*ce, facebook, or stupid twitter.

  • san

that’s some BS..i bet that research was done by white people…I left myspace some years ago b/c of age..its for the younger generation..facebook is more about connecting with people u haven’t seen in years..and making business connections

and fb can keep that farmville mess WTF. too many silly apps…

  • mocha latte

I know I did! Myspace can be ghetto but I think its all about the perception. Myspace is intended to be more of a care-free, entertainment type of social site, whereas FB is more for networking and mostly at a professional level. Nowadays, FB is a little care-free as well, but still holds that level of integrity if you will.

  • Shawn of the Living

I don’t have Myspace/Facebook or twitter. don’t care for any of them……I’m almost sure that all of the information both public and personal are being collected and stored…for use either by marketing or government.

Just never understood the need to forcast all of my feelings/desires/ current status and the like…..I like finding friends organically…not digitally.

I am 43 yr old black female..never cared for myspace only because i thought it catered the younger crowd…i have a facebook account and i love it.. i just heard about facebook from the young college kids at my job (which is what it was originally set up for) i was against it at first (seemed like another myspace i thought) after opening an account i actually like it…although it was obviously created for college kids….i love it as it allows me to keep in touch with out of state family..i love it..for me it is very different from my space big time…lately, i’ve been seeing alot of switch from mypsace to facebook (i don’t like) the whole ghetto statement has nothing to do with black/white…. i always thought myspace was ghetto, but the term has nothing to do with race…ghetto just means the type of attitude……

  • Beauty

It wasn’t that myspace was more ghetto. You used to have to be in college to get on facebook. Now they let any hood, white or black on. Myspace was less intellectual. No meaning or purpose. You can tell the change now that they started letting everyone in. Unwanted advances from thugs, trailer park racist harassing people. It’s turning into myspace which is causing the move to Twitter.

  • SHEENA

I STOPPED GOING ON MYSPACE BECAUSE THEY SCREWED UP MY PAGE AND IT WAS JUVENILE. PEOPLE WERE ARGUING ON THERE AND CUSSING PEOPLE OUT. I MEAN WHO FIGHTS ON MYSPACE? WHERE THEY DO THAT AT? TO ME FACEBOOK IS MORE MATURE, YOU CATCH UP WITH PEOPLE, GET THE LATEST GOSSIP/NEWS FROM FRIENDS AND SOME OF MY FRIENDS EVEN PUT SCRIPTURE ON THERE IN THE MORNING. ITS SOOO MUCH BETTER THAN MYSPACE. I THINK THAT KIDS AGES 10-17 ARE ON MYSPACE AND 18 AND UP IS ON FACEBOOK

  • chrissy

WHY IS EVERYTHING A FREAKING RACE ISSUE….REALLY…..LIKE THERE ARE NO BLACKS THAT WENT TO COLLEGE AN GOT ON FACEBOOK…UGGGGG

MY BF WHO IS BLACK SAID HE LEFT MYSPACE BECAUSE IT WAS TOO GHETTO. HE ONLY USE FACEBOOK NOW FOR LIKE THE LAST 2 YEARS. HELL THE OTHER DAY HE SAID FACEBOOK IS GETTING GHETTO SO NOW HE PUTS EVERY THING INTO HIS TWITTER. IT’S A SHAME WHITE PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO SAY IT’S GHETTO, AND THE REAL NIGAS BEEN GONE. I DO NOT FB OR MYSPACE AND I DO NOT TWITT BUT I FOLLOW MY FAVORITES ON TWITTER. I ALLOW NO ONE TO FOLLOW ME. IT’S ONLY FOR ME TO STALK AND SAY WHAT I HAVE TO SAY. Im on FB and I have a profile on my space. I found all of my friends on FB when I was “recruited” thru email. All n all, I like FB alot. I found it easy to track old friends down, and even visit some of them when I was in their town. I understand some of y’all- ” the popularity contest” and all ” virtual friends” and ish is somewhat true. like FB snobs. that’s tacky. I dont need those type of ppl as “friends”
So as corny as this sounds, if I see and old friend that on my FB list,- on the street or supermarket or whateva- I make it a conscious effor to at least say wassup to ‘em -even for a minute. FB is my world. and I manifest it as such. like a benevolent king. I will say wassup or “like” and reply to statuses all the time. even to peeps i havent talked to in years…

Facebook is getting there i have been on since 2007 and always preferred it over my space.. MySpace slows up and is ghetto! .but i see people saying add me on Facebook?? and I’m like why*?? it’s more personal leave it to blacks to make it hood

Thats impossible for there to have been white flight because whites follow everything blacks do. Myspac got played out because people got it played out. The majority of blacks are not on Myspace, the majority are other races mimicking blacks.

If this was true Rap music would be the same way, but it isnt.

If you think that Facebook is cooler than myspace than you need to get off the internet. Myspace is for business contacts not friends. Myspace got bad with all the damn spamming.

I don’t like how ghetto and black are being used as synonyms. I left myspace after them having zero privacy settings early on and all that music and background clutter was annoying. Facebook was boring to me at first but I liked that it was just for college students. Not white people or black people but college. Now it has opened the floodgates for everybody and its full of added ads promos and trash. Nothing to do with race. Reaching!

  • Walter

Well you have to understand that both Myspace and Facebooks are two totally different networking sites. Myspace was originally used as a dating social site before it became all about pimping out my profile. Facebook was a social networking sites generated around friends and family. So I think this was kind of like comparing apples to oranges in a way. But I used myspace for about a year and quickly found out that I have no real use for it. I still have a facebook page but that thing will forever sit in idle.

I personally think that Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter is the main reason we as a people lack human to human contact. Now everything is written in a 140 characters. Or instead of talking to your friend/mate you would rather display it as your status.

  • B3 Fearless

Mys.p.a.c.e – for young, high school kids and immature ppl.

FB – more mature crowd. I started back when I was in college when it was a site only for college students and EVERYONE on my campus used it.

I LOVE FB and I love the control I have over my page.

Those who are complaining that FB is turning into my.sp.ace must not know how to properly use FB or set themselves up by choosing to accept everybody and their mama as their friends.

I don’t receive spam and I think it’s because i don’t participate in all of those various apps, games & quizzes much so I’m not bombarded with ads all the time.

Plus every1 who is part of my FBFF (Facebook Friends & Family) are ppl I actually KNOW.

I shake my head at ppl who have 1,000 or more friends and then put all of their business in the street.

That’s stupid and asking for trouble.

  • she

‘myspace is ghetto’ is the young ladies opinion n now one else has to make it theres so why give it to us to take onboard. Pure dudu. Myspace was created for musicians facebook social networking finding new friends, people just move on to the next new thing.now moving on.

  • Belinda

To me, it’s all the same people migrating. It’s all about hopping onto whatever new bandwagon rolls into town. All the people from myspace moved over to facebook then over to twitter at the same time. I have a myspace account but I never opened a Facebook or Twitter account because I had learned already from Myspace that when you create online profiles people from your past that you don’t necessarily want to meet pop up.

  • Belinda

I was relieved when people left Myspace because now I can enjoy searching for new music from new artists (which was Myspace’s original purpose) without friend requests and messages popping up every 10 seconds. And I’ve grown kind of attached to my profile because I spent a lot of time personalizing it.

Myspace definitely appeared to be more high school, trashy, and even “ghetto” if you will. The more sophisticated/professional seemed to be on FB networking. I would say it’s a little more family oriented as well. As the other writer said “even my mom is on it” and she loves sharing pics of the grandkids. But don’t get me wrong FB has it’s share of trash as well. It’s unavoidable.

So stupid!! Obviously an article designed to start racial biases. They’re two different sites. One is for self-expression and the other is for social networking. You can design a MySpace page anyway you want and even add your own artwork and music. I’ve been doing it for awhile now. It’s a good resume/portfolio you can direct potential business toward. FB is strictly for socializing. All you can do is send messages and view each others silly pics from high school. It’s good for getting back in touch with people. Further it’s easier for people to track you down and spy on you on FB. Like your boss. Employers use FB to spy on potential employees and some have even been fired for content on their FB so be careful what you say on your profile and homepage. Change yr settings to block non-friends and don’t add anyone from your office who might be a snitch.

I still had a MySpace page throughout college, but I never used it. It was too ghetto & it was just too easy for trife people to reach me. Facebook was more exclusive and I knew everyone on there, but Facebook has gotten super ghetto now too. I think Facebook will survive simply because so many older people have got on, so now I use it to keep in touch with family. Twitter is my fave though, people I don’t know don’t really care what I have to say, so I don’t have to worry about random people talking to me.

  • ni99as are stupid

I have neither. If I do not have your phone number or if I lost touch with you, it’s because you are not important. No need to join a social network to talk to people I have been living without talking to for however many years.

@ Tiger Shark vs The Kracken

    I totally agree

Yup, I didn’t know about this study, but the last post on Myspace was that Myspace is the GHETTO of the internet. I’ve never seen so many low-lives in my life. LOL. Its not a black thing, there are low class people of all races and they’re all on myspace.

  • memchee

…don’t think or believe it had anything to do with ghettoness.

myspace just failed to maintain innovativeness and allowed the facebook to become the next big thing.

even when facebook had/has privacy issues, myspace still failed to roll out any type of ad campaign to entice it’s users to return.

…the college crowd drove myspace, they should not have abandoned that segment of their market.

I have a facebook account but i am not a fan. I like myspace a whole lot better, but that’s just me.

I am a 32yr.old black woman & I agree myspace is now definitely gheto (4 all races!) FB has reconnected Me with every1 I have encounted in life & now (thx goodness) I no longer have 2 deal with the fake names/music/crazy bk grounds, etc of myspace. FB is great for reconnection & even networking & definitely much more mature than myspace. I still have my pg there however I only ck it 1x a wk & on my pg it says (for the last 1 1/2 yrs) find Me on FB!

I know the owners of fb are mad b/c #1- they didnt even want Blacks on their site, #2- if fb is “getting ghetto” ppl will leave fb & that will fu(k with their money. The owner makes millions off of fb

But, i dnt see fb failing anytime soon b/c alot of older White ppl r on their, keeping in touch with kids & grandkids

  • Uhh yeah ok

Myspace is for hoes so is twitter…

  • cocoaskinvixen

I left myspace because it made me feel uncomforable..im not sure why people felt safe to expose there genitals and post their drug filled plans for that day but it was too much. Besides Facebook to me is more uniformed..everybody has the same options allotted to them and there is no competition on who’s page is up to date and looks the best….just sayin

  • Tima

Myspace is very ghetto andor immature people. I wish the ghetto people would stay there. And the fake Internet thugs. Facebook is for mature people.

  • Dontae

in my opinion myspace is for kids. all the layouts with all the profanity, cartoons, guns, etc. are things kids would consider entertaining. even kids 9 and 10 yrs old are getting a hold of email addresses and creating myspace pages posting basically ignorant profanity that, in their minds, are ammussing and entertaining. kids are starting arguments over things they’ve heard at school, I could go on for days about it so I’ll stop there and start with facebook. Im only 19 but trust me I have a very intelligent and mature mind and the things I post show that. Even now Im noticing a lot of kids coming to facebook, a lot of elementary and middle schoolers, you know, kids born in ’94, ’95, 96′..its ridiculous.

I don’t understand y race had anything to do with this mysoace could easily have clean itself up how is it anyone elses fault but there own they had the money . What in incredibly stupidly short sighted story. People left myspace because it was a broken mess after the version 3 updates. They went to facebook because there is no other place to really go to.
