earthquake maryland 3.6-magnitude

Another day, another natural disaster:

A 3.6-magnitude earthquake struck near the Gaithersburg, Maryland, area just after 5 a.m. ET Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The center of the quake was about 20 miles northwest of Washington, the USGS said.

The earthquake was the largest in the area since 1974 — and the first registering above 3.0 on the Richter scale there in that time period, said Amy Vaughan, a geophysicist at the USGS National Earthquake Information Center. “This is a significant event for the region,” she said.

About an hour after the quake, Vaughan said more than 5,500 people had reported feeling it across Maryland, in nearby Washington, and in states including West Virginia, Virginia, Delaware.

“It was really loud, like a plane flying really low. I had never felt anything like it,” said Anne Ngunjiri, 30, of Gaithersburg. “I was jolted out of bed. All my neighbors woke up. After it passed, I thought it could be an earthquake, and lay in bed hoping there were no aftershocks.”

Judy Rudolph, 64, said she was writing e-mails in bed in Rockville, Maryland, when her house started to shake.

“My first reaction was the noise…. I thought it was an explosion,” she said. She said she’d never felt anything like it in her 31 years living there. Until Friday, the largest earthquake recorded within a 75-kilometer (about 47 miles) radius of Gaithersberg since 1974 was a 2.7-magnitude quake in 1993, Vaughan said. The last earthquake in Maryland occurred on October 8, 2007, according to the USGS website. It was a 1.7-magnitude quake about 5 miles northwest of Baltimore.

Wow. 3.6-magnitude is nothing in comparison to the tragedy in Haiti, but is certainly extremely unusual for Maryland…all of these natural disasters has us wondering…

    Luke 21:11 (New International Version)
11There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.

  • Lyan @ Gift Plants

At times, we need to expect the unexpected. Good thing that there were no destructions were reported in the area.

  • BEREAL

fort washington – did not feel a damn thing

  • Pisces82

I live in Southern Prince George’s County, MD and I didn’t feel it. I guess the intensity died down by the time it reached us or maybe I’m just a heavy sleeper. However, I don’t understand why the news is making a huge deal about it because minor earthquakes have occurred in the area before. Sound the alarm when the DC area gets hit by an earthquake rivaling the ones in California.

  • Allenro

    oh boy here we go

  • Angie R.

I live in DC and I felt it. I thought i was dreaming until I saw the news this morning.

  • Graces

I felt it early in the morning. Especially when my t.v. started to shake. I kicked my sister out the bed screaming, “Earthquake, Eartquake”. We don’t get real natural disasters in this area. The only thing we get in this area are mostly terrorist and bomb threats so this was definitely a surprise.

  • mona

What many of you are failng to realize is that this area has never had an earthquake of this magnitude, it is therefore a MAJOR event scientifically. What is just a small thing to some is a Big wake up call for those who study and research these types of events. What it means to the environment and possible future disasters is what has to be considered. It’s like a tsunami hitting Kansas from a lake vs the ocean..WTF? Even if it was small and did no harm what so ever…it would open up a whole new can of worms. End of days…read your Bibles and figure it, decide on your own what exactly YOU think is going on in the world today.

  • ada

    @ graces

is that u slim..lol story was sounding a little to familiar lol

  • Andy G

I slept right on threw it.. Had no idea what everyone was talking about when i woke up…

  • sherry

I felt it in Baltimore, It felt like a train going by but there are no trains in my area.

  • Ifeelsorry4ya

    @MONA-thank you very much maam.

  • Niasia

I didn’t feel anything, slept right through it. Stop being so hyperbolic! It wasn’t that serious!

  • Somali Ninga

LOL!!! We had a 5.5 earthquake almost a month ago you think a 3.6 is end of days? LOL!!!!!!!

  • mona

funny is the same one’s who chose to ignore the signs, are on here commenting on “cakes” all day. Life is about soooooo much more

  • Graces

    @ada

LOLL! What if it wasn’t me?

  • Kenny

You guys are so cute…. 3.6 aint nothing. Come here to L.A and experience a 5.

  • Here to share knowledge, not to argue with you

I slept right through it…..2 ambien a night will do that for ya…..

  • You=Stupid

Yea, another “disaster”. A disaster causes mass destruction. Clueless urbanite dope head.

  • http://yahoo.com Kylie

It was a magnitude 3.6, dude.

  • thenerd

And please stop saying it’s a “natural disaster” got damn….

  • Over it…

I’m in MD too and it wasn’t that serious…and from my understanding its happened a few times here before…but an earthquake of any magnitude always brings out the “end of the world…Jesus is coming” folks…smh…

  • that damn sh#$ disturber

passing thru visiting friends and thought someone was trying to break in (more sound then shaking). time to get the he.ll. outta here!!

  • I Stay SMH

I was in NE DC…woke me up. Def not BAD but unusual…scared the mess out me!

  • Silver Spring

I slept right threw that S***.

  • DEZIRE

Happy to read that the MD bloggers are physically unharmed. Some will be affected psychologically. Don’t be ashamed to seek help.

  • H. Este

…”all of these natural disasters has us wondering” …What I’m really wondering is how you passed 5th grade English.

  • IGuessso

When Jesus said their would be great earthquakes in one place after another, he never said he would be the one causing it. If the weatherman say it’s going to rain, he’s not the one causing it to rain. He’s just reporting it. People can sit all day and arguing and say it’s HAARP, and even if it is them, the fact still remains that earthquakes occurring all over the place is bible prophecy being fulfilled. Now I wouldn’t necessarily characterize a 3.6 earthquake as “great”, but to each his own.

  • RUNONMT

    Natural Disater? Please people…

    California laughs at 3.6′ers.

  • CourtLuvv09

I live in DC. I was @ work this morning in NW and me & my co worker felt it…

  • Jim smith

Did the author of this piece even stop to think before calling this piddling little quake a “disaster”?

  • ReALiSt aka ReALiSt (BaBy FaCeD A$$a$Sin – DoNt LeAvE YoUr GiRL ArOuNd Me!!)

HAARP stop playing with these weak minded people – I can see through this false alarm – and Jesus ain’t coming back to save your azzes because he never existed… Jesus only existed at the Council of Nicea 325AD; and you plagiarized bibles that has been changed more times than any fictional book in history…

  • Wannabe Judge Mathis

If you go to the USGS website you will see earthquakes all over the U.S.

  • alani

That was nothing. I live in Northern Cali., and we don’t flinch unless it is over 5.0. A 3.6, is not even worth the mention.

“A 3.6 earthquake isn’t big enough to impress temblor-hardened southern Californians. But it’s probably big enough to result in a tsunami of bad jokes and speech segues that will connect politics with the quake’s occurrence. Topics that may be compared to the earthquake include the passage of the financial reform bill, the fall in Obama’s poll numbers, and the reunion of Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston.

Quakes may be rare in the Potomac region, but some have been memorable. In 1973, for instance, many residents of the mid-Atlantic were jolted from sleep by a temblor near the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Delaware border. In 1969, West Virginia was hit by a 4.3 earthquake, and the shock waves could be felt as far away as D.C.

And while the West Coast may be the most quake-centric region in the country, eastern states have experienced some of the worst tremblors. The great Charleston, S.C., earthquake of 1886 measured an estimated 7.3 and killed 60 people. It affected an area with a radius of 800 miles, including all parts of Maryland.”

Was it the end of days in 1886 or 1969? Cmon Man!

  • sunflower

well this wasn’t a disaster but we can’t act like the planet CAN’T be destroyed by natural occurences. Its happened before. One day someone or something else will be reading or studying us as primitive beings

  • Authentic Goods

The only way to protect yourself from ANYTHING is to be prepared. Don’t get caught looking the other way. Or it will most definitely be the end.

  • She said it.

    @ Wanna be Judge Mathis..

I know…I went to this cite and it shows earthquakes happing all over the u.s. everyday. Oklahoma, Illinois, Indiana….earthquakes all day all night.

  • Miss Moneypenny

I was lying on my bed reading when it started shaking and I heard a roar like a train. I thought it was a earth shaking good book until I made it to work and heard.

  • Miss Moneypenny

My son started talking about the end of days. My advice to him was the usual: never worry about things that you do not have any control over.

  • You can thank me later.

District Heights checking in and I didn’t feel a thing. A damn plane took off from Andrews this morning around 4 AM that woke me up but that’s about it.

SO TRUE! ya know george carlin did a bit on that, sayin how the earth will heal itself, we’ll be f.c.u.k.ed. but the earth will be just fine

  • Illuminate Truth “Truth is Authority…..Authority is not Truth”

    ***** US Patent 4686605 *******

This is the patent “for altering a region in
the earth’s atmosphere, ionosphere, and/or magnetosphere”. It is connected to the HAARP program (that big a$$ satellite dish in Alaska) which belongs to the Department of Defense. There are other patents that all have to do with creating natural disasters such as earthquakes, rain storms, hurricanes, etc. The government has spent trillions on electromagnetic technology admittedly to control weather but they say it is for agricultural reasons. So why do these patents as well as HAARP belong to the Department of Defense and not the Department of Agriculture?

Research this stuff for yourself people.

  • Stan

I don’t want to disrespect anyones believe but i have to spit my opinion. To the earth human beings are no different from termites. Life is Life. The earth will balance itself out and unfortunately human beings will be “Collateral Damage”. Life is more than human beings. We are too egotistical to realize this revelation. To be honest the earth would be better off without us. I don’t mean to be pessimistic but this is just how I feel

  • truth set u free

Lolllol to some funny comments. When shits like these happen some people over exaggerate the whole situation like it was shaking that a wanted to fall of the window of my condo etc

  • John

The matrix is on helluva story

  • wow….

FYI: We live on planet Earth. Hence all the EARTHQUAKES! Seriously though…enough of this END OF THE WORLD nonsense.

I’m also laughing at the people screaming: JESUS IS COMING! Keep the entertainment rolling guys!

  • B3 Fearless

I live in Baltimore County. Didn’t feel a thing. Slept like a baby.

  • tiff-any

3.6 Magnitude??? Oh no, not a minor earthquake!

I know the Californians on this thread are laughing their A**** off. A baby burbs and that feels stronger than a 3.6 earthquake.

    Punks.

  • Wow!

Ok people the quake was in the Gaithersburg, Rockville area… NOT DC! Also a earthquake occuring @ 3 am is during the witching hour….

  • http://www.keglawyers.com Joe

Suddenly California isn’t sounding quite so dangerous, is it?

  • Allie

Like someone previously mentioned earthquakes happen all the time 3.6 is definitely nothing to get crazy over

  • Allie

    @ drenk

    lmao tell me about it

  • daboss

    omg i knew something happened!
i woke up around that time and then i heard a big boom
i thought it was still raining and it was thunder
but i looked out the window and it wasnt
so i was like oooh and went back to sleep
    lol it wasnt that bad.

  • Asia

@Dee thats some food for thought….It’s funny how we have had more drastic natrual disasters coming into this year happen around the world….like no other. Now if that does not scream end of days then how about this never ending war, disease….the fact that we see wtf stories happening everyay. Which to me means we are living in a time with the greatest social choas….oh not to mention the Oil Spill in the Gulf…but all that does not add up to warning signs to the average American…because they are oblivious! If it does not have to do with entertainment then it does not exist and is not relevent in todays society. It’s sad that the majority of people take more in from these hollyweirdo’s and ignorant, fake rappers then actually having a mind of their own an becoming interested in what REALLY MATTERS. You deny it if it makes you feel better or tune it out by fousing your attention on what soulja boy has to say but the reality of the situation is we are living in times in which you have to expect the unexpected…be mindful of our enviornment because it is what we depend on.

  • JaNa’e

these people are seriously overreacting, trust me i live in maryland and majority of the state SLEPT THROUGH IT. those of us that were awake can tell you that it only lasted a few seconds and sounded more like a strong bout of thunder,

a natural occurence equals the end of days? wtf ever. it was only 3.6, correct me if i’m wrong but doesnt california get hit with way worse than that?

  • Kate

Stafford, VA i didnt feel it just my dog went crazy 10-15 mins before the earthquake happened, and the a/c unit was shaking like a washer was out of control.

  • Honut Sinti

Felt it in NW Washington DC.

  • cc

    Planet Nibiru

  • kingsley

yaw and these prophecies….. look people it is all scientific.. it is global warming, and in those areas it isnt like they never had a quake in the east coast ever.. the race people are idiots.. it happen in chile, china, haiti, and a tsunami in indonesia which affected the california coastline.. I guess it is end of days when a tornado comes crashing thru the mid west or down south or a flood where none of this happens on the west coast.. quit freakin out, and be happy it wasn’t a higher magnitude freakin… sheep…lol.. THE SKY IS FALLIN ARRRGGGG
