Miami’s 300+ pound defensive end Phillip Merling has been charged with felony battery after being arrested in May for beating his pregnant girlfriend. SMH. Details when you continue
Phillip Merling, 25, was initially arrested May 27 at his home in Weston. At the time of his arrest, Broward Sheriff’s Office noted that he either knew or should have known the woman was pregnant.
Authorities accuse Merling of hitting the woman in the face and head, causing her lip to bleed. She was two months pregnant with their second child.
The Broward State Attorney’s Office filed the charge against Merling Friday, July 16.
Merling’s attorney has already entered a not guilty plea for the charge.
Felony battery carries a sentence of up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
The NFL also could punish Merling for violating the league’s personal-conduct policy.
Merling, who is 6-foot-5 and 305 lbs had 33 tackles and 2 1/2 sacks for the Dolphins last season.
Merling is the second member of the Dolphins to be arrested and charged with battery against a female during the 2010 offseason. Teammate Tony McDaniel was arrested in February on the charge of domestic battery against girlfriend Alaina Smith which allegedly occurred in the driveway of his Broward County Florida residence. The case has yet to be tried.
SMH… What the fu*k is wrong with these dudes??? There’s no damn reason to put your hands on a female and hitting a pregnant woman in the face when you are 6’5 and over 300 lbs is beyond excessive. This is inexcusable.
