End Of Days? North Korea Threatens “Nuclear War” Over US Military Exercises

Kim Jong-il

Things only seem to be getting uglier with U.S./North Korean relations…

North Korea has threatened to use its “nuclear deterrent” in response to planned military exercises by the US and South Korea this weekend.

The regime promised a “retaliatory sacred war” amid increased tensions on the Korean peninsula over the March sinking of a South Korean navy vessel, which Seoul and Washington blame on Pyongyang.

North Korea’s National Defence Commission (NDC), headed by leader Kim Jong-il, issued the threat today for what it called a second “unpardonable” provocation for again being blamed for the incident in which 46 sailors died.

“The army and people of the [North] will legitimately counter with their powerful nuclear deterrence the largest-ever nuclear war exercises,” the commission said in a statement run on the state-run Korean Central News Agency.

Pyongyang routinely threatens war when its southern neighbour and the US hold joint military exercises. South Korea’s defence ministry said no unusual North Korean military movements were detected.

Operation Invincible Spirit, which begins tomorrow, will involve 8,000 US and South Korean troops, 200 aircraft and 20 ships, including the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier the USS George Washington.

“The more desperately the US imperialists brandish their nukes and the more zealously their lackeys follow them, the more rapidly the [North's] nuclear deterrence will be bolstered up along the orbit of self-defence and the more remote the prospect for the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula will be become,” the NDC statement said.

Yesterday, a North Korea spokesman, Ri Tong-il, told reporters at the Asean regional security forum in Hanoi, Vietnam, there would be a “physical response” to the drills in the Sea of Japan, which he branded another sign of US “hostility”.

“It is a threat to the Korean peninsula and the region of Asia as a whole,” he said, adding that the exercises harked back to 19th-century gunboat diplomacy and violated North Korea’s sovereignty.

The meeting of regional powers in Hanoi has quickly become the stage for a war of words between the North and the US, although there has been no direct contact between the countries’ delegates.

The US secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, said “isolated and belligerent” North Korea would have to end its “campaign of provocative, dangerous behaviour” if it wanted better relations with the US and the rest of Asia.

North Korea has pulled out of six-party talks on its nuclear programme and is blamed for the March sinking of South Korean navy vessel the Cheonan. It denies carrying out the attack.

On Wednesday, Clinton unveiled new sanctions designed to deny luxury goods to the North Korean elite and strangle funding for Pyongyang’s nuclear programme. The North says it will not return to nuclear talks unless sanctions are lifted.

Yesterday, Clinton urged Asian nations to pressure North Korea into abandoning its nuclear ambitions by enforcing strict UN sanctions imposed after the regime’s second nuclear test last year.

A South Korean newspaper said the new US sanctions would target 200 North Korean-held foreign bank accounts thought to be connected with illegal activities such as nuclear weapons development, drug trafficking and counterfeiting.

“Even before the Cheonan incident, the US was tracking around 200 North Korean bank accounts in banks in China, Russia and even eastern Europe and Africa that are believed to be involved in the development of weapons of mass destruction and the export of drugs, counterfeit money, fake cigarettes and weapons,” the Chosun Ilbo newspaper quoted a diplomatic source as saying.

The paper said Kim Jong-il is believed to hold a US$4bn slush fund in secret accounts in Switzerland, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein.

North Korea also rejected Seoul’s demand for an apology over the sinking.

This is definitely kind of scary. This isn’t the first time Kim Jong-il has used this kind of language. He seems like he’s itching to push the button.

Do y’all think Hillary Clinton has this covered?

Yeah…KJI is crazy.I still think he’s bluffing.NK does’nt (yet) have a missile that can reach the US.Pretty sure he would’nt nuke SK.Call his bluff now-and he shuts up…probably forever.

  • WHADUP

The problem isn’t that he have a missile that can reach the Us he already said about that “no problem Japan is just there”. But i agree it’s a bluff this mother****er loves power, he is sick as hell and he stays in power, so an attack means the end for him. I’m sad for his people….

  • Panther

Can you imagine? if this is true?

  • Somali Ninga

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME WHY USA ATTACKED IRAQ IN 2003, WHERE THERE WAS NO PROOF OF WMDs, BUT HAVENT ATTACK NORTH KOREA EVENTHOUGH USA HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT THEM SINCE 2003? WTF?

  • drenk

    @ Somali Ninga

does north korea have oil or natural gas? then the military-industrial-comple doesnt care

  • the light

Bluffing or not his territory is threatened by US presence of military practice. Even if he is bluffing he has allies just like America does. His just happen to be China and maybe Russia. Two countries that would be happy to see us destroyed at some point.

  • NEEKYUK

what is this “Release the warheads” doctor evil bs!!?? what is this man on? anyway, i don’t know the full story so i’m keeping out of it.. good luck to you americans!!

The man is about to destroy the world. Thanks Neekyuk for the luck!!! That’s very cold of you. lol :D

  • BBBEE25

I don’t think he will do it…..he made too many threats too many times. It’s hard for me to take him seriously.

  • http://deleted tessa

It is probably a bluff but you never know. I am sure that pretty soon someone will get sick of American bullying other nations, and they will eventually strike.

  • Country 1st

I’m in California and if young kim, whateva his name want beef, he is threatning the pacific. I for 1 don’t take any threat from asian soil. The same people the U.S. Gives business to over blacks, turns around and threaten the U.S. I don’t know about yall, but the U.S. Is home many generations of African Americans and I will defend her until the end. A threat from North Korea, is a threat towards our way of life. I WILL DEFEND HER. Now if Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachman + The tea party wants to grab guns, here is where they should be aiming them.

  • drenk

THEY SUNK A SK NAVY VESSEL, HE DREW FIRST BLOOD!!!

  • Country 1st

@ Drenk Trust & Belive the Navy Vessel that was sunk, was a Vessel of South Korea.

  • drenk

    @ country

    what…?

  • Berthine3465

I don’t think new sanction against North Korea will deter the country from having missels. The sanctions only hurt ordinary North Korean, not the regime.

  • keri baby

I’m going to be stationed in south korea next month, I hope they don’t start this bs while I’m there. Real talk North Korea got the weapons and all the technology, and if they join forces with China we are done. I’m in the military and trust the US aint ready for Nk, China, and Russia

  • karmila

I think that’s the biggest problem with our country, the false sense of security. Threats like these should not be taken lightly, and for many of you to act like we are untouchable is very naive to me. This the same thing that happened with pearl harbor and 911, we thought we were untouchable and they proved us wrong. I don’t no if this is a bluff or not (and hopefully it is), but in this day and age I don’t take none of this lightly. Nobody is promised “forever” on this earth.

  • http://deleted white male

North Korea probably were the ones that blew up the BP oil rig in the Gulf.

  • oduroyal

They know not to check us, we’ll put a boot in that azz…we ain’t neva scared. Their President needs to chill and go back to putting those pink rollers in his hair.

  • Zone 4 Representatives

@Somali….we won’t attack them because of the fact they do have nukes. When nuclear warfare pops off it will be on the U.S governments terms. You know we have to wait until all the luxury shelters and bunkers are ready for the elite.

  • Kenyetta

    You’re ill Kim Jong!!!

  • Wowzers?

He sick wit, but he know if he check the history of America his sick cant compare ever. Its a bluff.

  • Wowzers?

He knows he will be shocked and awed and it will be a firework show for the world. He’s a great chess player though. He will not go into battle in a way that you can predict.

  • Wowzers?

He will only go win he has already won. Like if he was in Americas position, he would destroy his enemies. America must chose wisely, or loose allies and create common enemies. Just what he’s looking for.

  • Marquis de Sade

I’m sure this is nothing more than sabre rattlin’ for propaganda sake…As far as their nuclear technology goes, their missile guidance system (in theory) can reach Hawaii (at best), due to their recent bartering with Iraq in the form of some plutonium for Iraq’s guidance missile technology.

  • Marquis de Sade

    Ooops! I mean Iran.

  • Marquis de Sade

What’re you kiddin’? N. Korea is broke! A few months ago, they all but tanked their economy by replacing their yuan with a new yuan with little to no value, which subsequently made most of their citizens life savings valueless…And then to top it off, they converted their overall economic philosophy to an extreme form socialism by taking over all private and family owned businesses and forcing all foreign-owned businesses to shut down…Inflation has all but crippled their economy due to their current regime’s idiocy…Right now the costs of a cup of coffee, a bowl of rice, and a scoop of ice cream is the equivalent of $75 to $100.00′s. Things has gotten so bad, rumor has it, they were forced to re-open their trading doors so foreign business could do business again, and now they’re considering reverting back to the old yuan. (Which is little to no consequence to their citizens, who in protest after they initially replaced the old yuan, toss their savings out their windows to express their anger and disgust) Kim Jong Ill should’ve been taken out a long time ago.

People who take North Korean threaths lightly are foolish…you have a country that is not allowed any religion by their leader and the entire population worships him like god. most of the country is in the miliary in some ways and they are ready to fight at the drop of a dime…they have strong nuclear capabilities thanks to Russia and Pakistan and their leader is nuts…don’t take the threats lightly America…you may think shock and awe will work with these people but I guarantee we will be in for a great surprise…these People hve no moral compass folks

  • dallasfever

There is nothing in North Korea. We wouldn’t go in like IRAQ. We don’t need to find weapons, save oil, or if like the above poster said save a country full of militants. Air raid would suffice to wipe out the country. No ground support needed until the war is over. Humanitarian,red-cross etc….Also china wouldn’t engage against USA. We owe then to much money. The country would not survive without USA. Russia has peace treaties recently signed with USA, and have no intentions on going to war with USA. To sum up, the little man talks alot but probably couldn’t defeat South Korea alone. Missile test after missile test. Most fail to reach the intended targets. SMH

N.Korea would kick America’s behind no doubt.China and Russia will always come to N.Korea’s rescue no matter what. Its a historic thing with those 3 plus they share borders. The US should focus on getting their a$$es kicked by the Taliban and not drag themselves into another war they will lose.$12 trillion in debt and growing everyday.SMH.Let the South and North deal with their own problems.

WMD was a red herring. Oil IS a red herring. Iraq’s invasion was about Saddam Hussein previous threat against a former president and his current threat against Israel. Perpetrated by Bush’s ego and the arrogance of the Neoconservatives, AIPAC and “The Shadow Government”. He paid 25k to every suicide bombers family in Israel. How many suicide attacks have taken place in Israel after the invasion?

  • drenk

    @ Keep it Real

there have been less suicide bombings in israel because israel doesnt allow as many palestinians entering. as well as building the “security” wall to keep anymore people coming in

  • Nikkislice

I’m in South Korea as well, they still don’t seem to take the North too seriously. They do these drills every year and with the ship sinking, the main people that want some sort of revenge is the families. Nonetheless, for North Korea to be a country that can barely feed its people and just asked for aid… it seems unless with backing from a richer country they won’t be handle no kind of war.
