Students Fail Statewide Tests

Beauty fades.. dumb is forever. In a land of bust it babies, aspiring video vixens and Hip-Hop simpletons, someone forgot to tell the kids to read a d*mn book!

If the young men pulled their pants up and the young ladies took pictures FACING the camera, maybe they’d notice the reflections looking back can barely add up all the millions they hope to gain. Test scores for students from the 3rd grade thru 8th grades reveal that our students are learning less and failing more.

City tests scores released Wednesday plummeted after officials made it harder to pass the statewide exams.

On the math exams, only 54% of third- through eighth-graders passed, compared with 82% the year before, a shocking decline of 28 percentage points.

Reading scores also dropped a whopping 27 percentage points, from 69 % during the 2008-2009 school year to only 42 %.

The disturbing decline comes in the wake of a study commissioned by the state and released last week that found the high-stakes exams had become easier to pass over the last four years.

The state significantly raised the bar in response, essentially erasing recent gains made by city kids.

“We are doing a great disservice when we say that a child is proficient when that child is not,” said state Regents Chancellor Merryl H. Tisch.

The nose dive brings tests scores even lower than they were four years ago, when the state revamped the exams. In 2006, 51% of city students passed the reading exam and 57% passed math.

The study performed by a team led by Harvard professor Daniel Koretz found that the tests became easier to pass, easier to predict and tested a narrow set of skills, suggesting that skyrocketing scores did not mean students were learning more.

This year, the state raised the passing score, made it less predictable and added more material. Next year, the exams will get even tougher.

City students’ declines was matched by other big cities in the state.

Charter schools statewide also saw massive declines, dropping to 60% passing math from 89% last year and 43% passing English, down from 76% in 2009.

This is just ridiculous. Have the schools properly prepared them for the tests they are taking? Or are the parents too busy posting smut on Facebook to notice? All students with bad grades get a HO SIT DOWN… AND READ A BOOK!!!

    Great point!

  • dumb black men

    I live in NY and Have a sister in the 5th grade, the stuff they are teaching them gets harder each year. At 5th grade I was learning division Now they are teaching algebra. Its getting ridicolous maybe they should slow down the material they teach the children. And the test they give could not get hard enough.

  • foreallydoe

    Sheesh. They need to find a way to reach these kids. These numbers make the future seem very scary. Parents please do your part at home. Schools can never do it by themselves.

  • THE SMOKIN’ SECTION

    Amen @ foreallydoe!

    Not only flouride, but chemicals and steriods they pump in our food meats…you never heard a lot about autism years and years ago, but now it’s a common theme…

  • Somali Ninga

    @ THE SMOKIN’ SECTION
    You’re right. Austism use to be 1 in a couple thousand and now its 1 in 150.

  • 1991 UK (The gem of Africa)

    Thats interesting… in the UK it shows students are getting smarter soo grade boundaries ar changing and things are being made harder to be able to get an A or even an A*

  • I’m Just Me…Keeping It Real Since: 1983

    My daughter is going to 3rd grade. Over the past year I saw a 4:1 ratio on the amount of reading homework that came home as opposed to math.. I also feel they are not teaching kids to learn and understand the material but teaching them for these tests. So I am surprised to hear this result. But I agree I can’t solely leave it up to her teachers and they can’t leave it solely to me. Parents make sure you go to parent teacher conferences also so you know where your kids need help and your focuses need to be

  • 1991 UK (The gem of Africa)

    @I’m Just Me…Keeping It Real Since: 1983

    I agree with you.. Although I live in the UK I finished secondary school (equivalent to high school) about three years ago…and they only taught us for the exams and the day after we would forget. Even now especially with maths i cant remember a thing.

    Autism is a result of the inflammation response caused by super-vaccines. Back in the day you received them one by one or occasionally double up. Now they give you one vaccine targeting multiple things which flares up an inflammatory response that correlates to a signal molecule in the brain.

    Not really!! I live in a place called Clapham as well – do you know where that is???

    You got twitter or fb??

  • foreallydoe

    @Rich

    Education begins and is reinforced at home. Parents need to be parents. With that said you should also realize that there are a great many external influences. Poisons in food and water can greatly affect a child’s ability to learn. Our brains are over 70% water. The mental impulse that gave you the ability to type that run on sentence occured with water as a conduit. Did you know that flouride is a main ingredient in rat poison? Do you know the effects of flouride on the human brain? Please educate yourself before you call someone else a dummy.

  • 1991 UK Gem of Africa

    Yes I know Clapham…yh i do have facebook.

    I’m not trying to be mean but when you have kids literally idealizing the mentally challenged or profoundly retarded what do you expect.
    Lady Gaga, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, lil Wayne, etc.

  • 22baybee

    Let’s be real…the drop in test scores is a combination of several things! Yeah the things they put in our food and water are messig us up (I know a 4 year old that started getting hair down south because of the steroids in food), people are having babies younger and younger (babies having babies), parents are so busy tryin to make ends meet that they don’t focus like they should, teachers often times just want that check (they aren’t paid enough for the type of work they do…so they start to care less), kids have too much freedom to do what they want and have too many distractions! The government, the teachers, the parents, and the students themselves are all at fault for these terrible test scores!

  • 1991 UK Gem of Africa

    humm…i think i prefer talking to you on here

  • homecookin

    Send your kids to PRIVATE school. Period.

  • R_U_Trying_To_Prove_Her_Right?

    This is what we REALLY ought to be up in arms about, not that ENDLESS ‘swirl’ $hit — I interview every kind of contract prorammer for $60 to $85 dollar per hour slots except BLACK ONES (every damn kind of immigrant in the effin’ world, barely speaking grammatical english!!!!)

    I wish the hell we cared as much about THIS as who some deluded ni@@a is sleeping with.

    That is why I’m glad my mama stayed on my @zz, My oldest is about 2 start school this year and I’m so glad my mommy works in the district because she flat out told me the teachers are worthless and the school itself is terrible, he’s not going to his zoned school, rather the 1 she picked out 4 him and has his teachers lined up until the 8th grade….gotta luv it.

  • 8ESBABY

    I blame the parents. You can’t control the media, but you can control your kids.

  • tromba

    DR.FUNK,

    So what you are saying is that if “parents” “get involved” then the education problems in this country will be completely solved?

    What if these kids have parents who are idiots or do not want to “get involved” or cannot because of job obligations “get involved”? What if these kids’ parents just don’t care?

    We can do better. Parental involvement is certainly a step in the correct direction. What we must do is take the variables that cannot be controlled out of the equation.

    First of all, teachers need to be recruited and educated and paid and treated as professionals. No one cares that an engineer gets paid 2 or 3 times what a teacher does. Why is that? Engineers do great, beneficial work for the betterment of our society. So do teachers. What is the difference? I know. Do you?

  • juliemango

    Heres 1 take it or leave it solution – listen 2 a memory tape while studyn 4 test it works!!!

  • DR.FUNK

    @tromba:

    “What if these kids have parents who are idiots or do not want to “get involved” or cannot because of job obligations “get involved”? What if these kids’ parents just don’t care?”
    ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
    Our society as a whole-and black people in particular-have been waaay too accommodating of this mindset for the last 40+ years.Look at what it’s gotten us.You would like for things to stay “as is”…because it’s been so good !?! PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT will fix MOST of what’s wrong.Being smart about who you breed with will fix most of the rest.If the rest of your rant is simply about the cliche that teachers are underpaid…then why is it that private schools tend to pay their teachers the same-OR LESS-yet get generally BETTER results? What about the fact that money would be available for raises if high tax states like NY/NJ consolidated their school districts…and got rid of some of the administrative OVERLAP? You know the state of New Jersey has MORE school districts than the state of California? For what? Throwing more money at the problem is not the answer.

  • foreallydoe

    @dr funk

    Word. I never thought of it quite like that but that’s a good point.

  • SL

    The dumber the people the easier they are to control.

    -Fluoride in the water
    -hormones chemicals etc etc they put in our foods
    - distractions they give us (reality tv, dumbed down music, etc)
    - an education system based on memorization and following orders (again, don’t want kids to think critically)

    Looks like everything is going as planned.

  • Jeff

    N*ggers are already dumb! Now they’re getting dumber? Scary. What’s really scary too is that whites are also getting dumber. They like to copy n*ggers, so they are also affected. Saw a stupid n*gger the other day with his pants hanging down. He had to hold them up. What’s wrong with this picture? This is cool? He looked like a f*cking idiot! N*ggers are bad news!

  • webreader

    @KIM
    Kim, you are correct its not always the kids or the teacher. Most of the time its the parent! mostly “no dad”: they never attend their childs conference, phone is always “Out of service,” don’t oversee the homework, teacher notes stay in the bookbag unread and unsigned.But! let someone step on Johnny or Johnette’s brand new Jordans-”lil momma” and everybody on 10thst will be there yelling and cursing!ready to “beat-down” the teacher.

  • webreader

    If you don’t have a computer in your home, your child is already behind.

    If your child enters kindergarten and don’t know his/her letter and sounds-they are already behind.

    If you child has never picked-up a pencil, he/she is even further behind.

    if your child don’t know red from blue-he/she is behind.

    If your toddler can’t count from 1-20 he/she further behind.

    If your child can’t tell the difference between a square and a circle he/she is already behind.

    Wake up and take care of your business parents! don’t wait for someone else to do it for you!

  • webreader

    Parents can’t discipline their children so they send them to school for the school to do it. Trying to get “Johnny and Johnette” to do the right thing can take months before they finally settle down and start learning. By that time its too late—can you say “Retained!”

  • Jeff

    @justhatlala. You’re kidding, right? Sounds like you’re one of the dumb ones too. There part? It’s “their”. Doin? Rite? It’s “right” you moron!

  • Millie Arellano

    The “dumbing” down of curriculum is exactly what happens when you use high stakes testing to evaluate the success of teaching and learning. Everyone starts teaching to the test!!!!!!! Instead of developing creative, critical thinkers, we have developed students who have mastered the skill of filling in the bubble to a narrow set of skills.

    The sad thing is that everyone will go back to school and once again begin to teach to the new and improved test!!!!!!

    Don’t blame the kids and the teachers; blame the knuckleheads who think they know what they’re doing!!!!!!

  • NYC teacher

    You should get your facts straight. First, you should know statistics are not always what they seem. For the past few years test scores have been inflated for political reasons. In 2008, since it was an election year the scores were inflated greatly. The scores are graded using a scale. The raw scores are compared across the state and then a scale score is given. This past year, not only were the test more difficult that in the past, but the scale score changed dramatically. For example, a student could have received a raw score of 620 in 2009 and received a final score of 3, where as this year students had to get a 650 in order to receive a 3. I don’t want to say that there aren’t students who are struggling and behind grade level, there definitely is. However, you need to remember that most of this test score issue political.
