Spanning a variety of genres and sub-genres, African-American and/or Black literature is best seen as an umbrella term that defines not only the ethnic background of the authors but also a commitment to putting out a message that is relevant both within and outside the Black community.

Readers may not agree with everyone whose name is on this list as the best representation of the genre, but these 13 authors are some of the best selling black authors of the past few years and they certainly have offered works that appeal to mainstream audiences. So, as you can tell, this list hinges on book sales, rather than critical reviews. Without further ado, here are the 13 Black fiction and non-fiction writers who have enjoyed widespread popularity and “bestseller” status over the course of the last five years.

Damn! NO comments on the post about books!

  • Ladybug

Some names got left out one of which is Sister Souljah “Midnight” which is one of my favorites.

  • Blackunity

@ Rommie why are you surprised, I heard someone say before the best way to keep something from a black person is put it in a book and from the comments on here it’s sad but true. When I go to Books a Million and Barnes a Noble I really see someone black unless they are looking at a magazine. It’s sad how are race keep falling further and further behind.

If I must say so myself, I love to read. I agree with some of the authors on there. On the other hand, how on earth did “Super Head” get on there. I will give it to her…the first book was good. But the second one was boring as hell. It just kept repeating herself. When she saw that no one else would deal with her for all the things she put in her first book, then she decided to change things. On another note…I didn’t know Osama Bin Laden like dark meat. Lol. Humph. You learn something new everyday.

  • Angel

@ miss t…I totally agree. I could have named so many other black authors that should have been on there. But I did see some that I don’t even know. I might have to check them out.

  • sexymike

    A couple of my favorites
were on there Terri Woods and
    Michael Basiden.

  • ShawnM

Yea, this list should’ve been longer!… Glad Terri Woods was on there all “True to The Game” books were good!… Nikki Turner is my girl and Zane is too!… They should’ve added Wahida Clark too, cus her books be really good!… Oh, and Joy King, Keysha Ervin, Vicki Stringer and a few more :)
