What Recession? Los Angeles Opens $578 Million Public School

At RFK, the features include fine art murals and a marble memorial depicting the complex’s namesake, a manicured public park, a state-of-the-art swimming pool and preservation of pieces of the original hotel.

The RFK complex follows on the heels of two other LA schools among the nation’s costliest — the $377 million Edward R. Roybal Learning Center, which opened in 2008, and the $232 million Visual and Performing Arts High School that debuted in 2009.

The pricey schools have come during a sensitive period for the nation’s second-largest school system: Nearly 3,000 teachers have been laid off over the past two years, the academic year and programs have been slashed. The district also faces a $640 million shortfall and some schools persistently rank among the nation’s lowest performing.

Los Angeles is not alone, however, in building big. Some of the most expensive schools are found in low-performing districts — New York City has a $235 million campus; New Brunswick, N.J., opened a $185 million high school in January.

Nationwide, dozens of schools have surpassed $100 million with amenities including atriums, orchestra-pit auditoriums, food courts, even bamboo nooks. The extravagance has led some to wonder where the line should be drawn and whether more money should be spent on teachers.

All this money on schools for performing arts? Yeah. That’s exactly what America needs right now, more actors, rappers and models.

578 million and teachers are struggling with the current economy…

Somebody has absolutely lost their minds!!!

For all that cash, it still won’t help kids who want to drop out.

You can’t buy your way out of every bad situation.

i cant say kids dont deserve the best, but i think new schools should be given to the best performing schools first, then on down the line. Maybe this school will start to perform better now.

  • Baybaybay

Building a new school when you got several others that are falling down and schools that barely got equipment, books and the basics is just a continuation of the stupidity we see on a daily basis when people who have no common sense in charge and don’t know what the hell there doing. On a sidenote @Realist. Hey my brotha its your girl Pantherbaby! I haven’t been here awhile been busy making my ends meet trying to get rich out here in California. I stopped using Pantherbaby cause somebody here stole it from me and was trolling.

If kids put in the work, they can graduate. You have to want to learn–nothing can stop YOU but YOU!

  • ShoNuff

Why are they spending this much while laying off teachers?? Why can’t they put that money in the communities to get these kids some activities to do while out of school? Why are kids dropping out of ELEMENTARY SCHOOL??? Why are parents letting these kids drop out??

  • Kitten

I don’t see no damn body standing in front of Congress about this – I could care less about Roger Clemens – what about this crap! All that money and then you want to pay teachers how much – something is seriously wrong in this country!

  • fed up in LA

These schools are full of mexicans most from homes of parents that are not legal citizens. Black White and Asian kids are not populating these schools because the are not being built in areas of los angeles where they are the majority. These schools are also run mostly by hispanics. please people make sure your kids get a second language because they are going to be left even further behind

  • hmmm

LA just laid off hundreds of city workers smh .. they could’ve built dozens of new schools through out LA County for that amount .. sorry students from Compton, South Central, Watts and LBC for some reason they couldn’t spare any money for you. SMH

  • OakTownHoney

First, this really shows the high price of incompetence.

Second, these multi-million dollar schools are really for the teachers – they will be walking the halls of these extravagant schools, long after the students and administrative staff have moved on.
