Ericka Dotson with Indique Hair

Black women are the main reason the hair industry has turned into a billion dollar business but unfortunately not too many of them are reaping the financial benefits. Especially when it comes to hair extensions… this is part of the business is run mostly by Asians. It’s very rare that one would come across a black woman who not only puts her face on the product and uses the hair but actually owns it and has her hands in the process from beginning to the end…

Bossip.com had the pleasure of meeting Ericka Dotson, the Co-Founder and Director of Marketing and Business Development of Indique Hair, a black owned company that distributes Indian Human Hair. Coming from Austin, TX as a hair stylist, Ericka never expected to become a distributor of human hair… all she wanted to do was provide quality hair for her clients.

I dont get it. She gets props for having a weave company instead of asians having weaves. She sells Indian Hair…be like Chris Rock and sell some kinky ish.

Lacefronts are the worst thing ever invented. Weave is one thing.. But lacefronts just look ridiculous I seriously can’t understand why women continue to wear those things. They are disgusting looking.

Why is it when black women have locks their hair grows down to the floor, but when they relax their hair it damges it until the point it stunts growth and they have to result to weaves & wigs? That should indicate you are doing something wrong. Click my name…or just type “Lecoil” into Google.

I don’t understand why people are continuing to make a big deal out of the fact that black women wear weaves and extensions, especially when a black woman is taking charge in an asian run market, people were complaining about the fact that asians own most black hair stores and now that a black woman has opened her own store people are still complaining? my gosh GET OVER IT, black women are still going to continue to wear weaves and extensions and wigs so complaining isn’t going to get anywhere if anything we should be congratulating her for her efforts

  • ok

Umm how about more hair salons open that know how to do natural hair and keep it healthy? Also we have a black woman president of Liberia now way bigger than some superficial hair shit

  • deelucious

They don’t do refunds on wigs, ponies and cosmetics because of hygiene reasons. But yeah they don’t exactly have the best customer service in the world. It’s always like they follow you around the store and you get that “Hurry up an’ buy!” vibe from them.

  • noloveforthestupid

    i swear a n’gga ain’t never satisfied.

  • BelizeanCutie

Love those earrings …big ups sister. Now we need more black owned nailshops …

  • ThickLikeCornbread

    @ deelucious,

I understand, but i had 1 Asian try to sell me a wig that had been on display. I asked for a discount & he said $5. Im like “WTF?! Naw, i’ll buy smtg new.” U cant return ntg but they will sell u a product that is tangled, been on other folks head, etc.

  • Chill

White women wear weaves too gone black sister paris hilton is a weavy or extensions example

  • ThickLikeCornbread

I meant he only wanted to take $5 OFF of the tangled wig

  • Robert

What do you expect black women been doing that since the inception of whiteness. Black men are satisfied with you beautiful black women but some of you are not satisfied with yourselves. That is the real problem, so you deem everything white and European as beautiful and the standard of beauty. I give this woman props for making money and being a business woman but this is another form of self hate.

It is refreshing to see our sister’s having ownership in the hair industry! Check out mrs.stef a former member of the platinum group mokenstef at royalindianhair.com. She offers free shipping for her hair extensions.

  • MissPerfect

Great. Asian people are benefit billions of money from hair weaves and dont even like black people. there needs to be more black people to step it up and bring money back to our community and some black people need to learn to shut the hell up and stop trying to tell women to wear there real hair stop with the b.s Who are you to tell someone what to do mind your business and go kick rocks .

  • that damn sh#$ disturber

very true which is why i went natural. most black women overprocess their hair and do too much sh@# to it which is why it doesn’t grow as fast.

  • that damn sh#$ disturber

forgot to add that i’m still proud of her and she looks beautiful. if black women are going to be the main ones buying it then indeed they need to own the sh@#!!!

  • Bunny(formerly Angel/UrHeiness)

Congrats & wish them much more success in this multi-billion $$$ hair biz…& funny how some bloggers are nagging about this already,SMDH. I swear some folks will NEVER EVER be totally pleased! Always have to find some flaw, ugh, get a grip already!

The hair business is predominantly owned by Asians/ran by Asians as many of us already know, whom btw, only see us as another $$$ & could care less about us so to know that black women are part of this should be good news.
After all, like it or not, whether some of you/us use these products or not? they’ll NEVER go out of style & will ALWAYS remain in high demand.

  • Why are you surprised… have you learned nothing in your time here on this Planet?

Hand Clap for the sister I dont wear weave but good for her, glad to see she has her hands in the industry mainly ran by Koreans. and Its an American Brand. FYI if you get braids or cornrows then your also using a weave LOL some people are so dumb! Oh an WHITE WOMEN & MWN HAVE BEEN WEARING WIGS AND WEAVES FOR OVER 4,000 MAYBE MORE YEARS LOL BLACK PEOPLE DID NOT INVENT WEAVE. WE JUST MAKE IT LOOK BETTER :)

  • Dont Think I Won’t Hitch Yah–Cause I’m Famous, I believe in KARMA

Women are not the only ones that wear lacefront. White men wear them also. I’ve seen it!

  • n_satiable

Can’t knock her for catering to a demand — people want weave and wigs, and she’s supplying it. Going natural was the best thing for ME, but I’m not going to knock the next chick who likes a little “help”.

  • ddreeder1236

You better go cuz! I am proud of you and YES Indique has the best quality hair in the industry!

  • http://indiaihaj.hu Peter

Invisible Hair Weave is a long lasting method of attaching commercial hair to the natural hair. Application generally takes about an hour. It will last about 8 weeks.

  • CJ

Ericka, you go girl! I’m so glad to see you coming so far and making people’s heads turn, from High School to now (you know who this is)! Judging from the comments here, a lot of controversy was stirred up, but it’s nothing really new. What IS new is that a black-owned business is taking this industry by storm. I can’t wait to see what the next 5 years brings :)
