Did The Old Man Play the Race Card????

Posted by Bossip Staff

Some mainstream media outlets are debating whether a recent attack ad on your boy Barack played the race card. Time Magazine sees McCain being slick here and dangling race out there for white folks to bite on:

When politicians interject race into a campaign, they seldom do it directly. Consider McCain’s new ad, which the campaign says it will be airing nationally …

This is hardly subtle: Sinister images of two black men, followed by one of a vulnerable-looking elderly white woman.

Let me stipulate: Obama’s Fannie Mae connections are completely fair game. But this ad doesn’t even mention a far more significant tie–that of Jim Johnson, the former Fannie Mae chairman who had to resign as head of Obama’s vice presidential search team after it was revealed he got a sweetheart deal on a mortgage from Countrywide Financial. Instead, it relies on a fleeting and tenuous reference in a Washington Post Style section story to suggest that Obama’s principal economic adviser is former Fannie Mae Chairman Frank Raines. Why? One reason might be that Johnson is white; Raines is black.

McCain’s camp already knew Raines wasn’t an Obama’s advisor.

All McCain needs to do is throw in a half naked white woman telling Barack to call her sometime, and he can win. They think using the same kind of ad that the Repubs used against Harold Ford Jr. will work, and it won’t!

  11. As ususal the video won’t play for me. And what the hell is up with Countrywide? They also gave Kwame Kilpatrick a sweetheart deal on a mortgage in Florida. Are they under investigation?

  15. Bossip, please correct your interjection. McCain’s campaign knew Raines was NOT an advisor to the Obama campaign.

I think it’s a stretch to call this racist. I think we’re safe with just calling this bull***** as usual without pulling race into it. It’s bad enough that it’s a lie already.

They asked Sarah Palin a question about her foreign policy experience the other day at her so called open floor speech she gave and she completely danced around the question saying “I think we’ll be ready in Janurary 09″ and I’m like what the *****?..You didn’t answer the question..McCain selected this woman to sitr up some excitement, I hope it backfires on his *****.

  26. sillyme

Y’all need to get out of Obama’s *****. He and his fellow Dems are all up in bed with Freddie and Fannie. That’s why you haven’t heard them say much about it this week. He and Biden even voted against the McCain bill a few years ago that would have averted the current crisis with F & F. You guys really need to open your eyes about this man. According to the Iraqi foreign minister, on Obama’s trip to Iraq in July, he asked the leaders there to delay signing a new troop withdrawal agreement until he gets into office, just so he can take all the credit. F**king hypocrite! Obama is just as sleazy and dirty as Clinton was. I’m not voting for McCain, but nor will I vote for Obama. For a man who had such promise earlier this year, Obama has turned into just another dirty politician.

  27. always knew

Now I know we aint surprised by this subliminal ish. The Republicans also (probably) “hacked” Sarah Palin’s yahoo account and “publically” posted the entries as another stunt–as if to show how benign and trustworthy she is. These are ***** Horton tactics of old (google him under the first prez Bush)

It won’t fly this time. If McCain does win, I am taking my 30,000 cash out of Bank of America and putting under the mattress before the bottom falls totally out…

  30. If you live in the Charlotte or metro area, Obama will be here on the 21st of September campaigning.

  31. Black.Woman.N.Memphis

John McCain will continue to do this until election time. But, that’s what desperate people do. Smart people know better. Barack has been the one candidate in our life who has been real with all his issues. November will be here soon, folks. Let your voice be heard. Please vote.

  32. sillyme

The Obama campaign did respond-they said Raines was never an Obama adviser-and McCain knew it because an email was sent to the top adviser of the McCain team-who never responded to the Obama campaign. McCain is the liar, and the racist coward. Don’t get your facts twisted.

  33. Obama and Biden would rather talk about the ISSUES THAT AMERICA ARE SUFFERING WITH than to attack John McCain and Sarah Palin with stupid lies unlike John McCain and Sarah Palin. Barack and Joe cares about the people-not playing tit for tat. Once again, get the facts straight.

  34. The ad Is racist-why couldn’t they have picked a black lady? The people who make these ads know what they are doing, and so does McLiar….

  40. Read this, folks:

Poll: Racial views steer some white Dems away from Obama

By RON FOURNIER and TREVOR TOMPSON, *****ociated Press Writers

WASHINGTON (AP) — Deep-seated racial misgivings could cost Barack Obama the White House if the election is close, according to an AP-Yahoo News poll that found one-third of white Democrats harbor negative views toward blacks — many calling them “lazy,” “violent,” responsible for their own troubles.

The poll, conducted with Stanford University, suggests that the percentage of voters who may turn away from Obama because of his race could easily be larger than the final difference between the candidates in 2004 — about two and one-half percentage points.

Certainly, Republican John McCain has his own obstacles: He’s an ally of an unpopular president and would be the nation’s oldest first-term president. But Obama faces this: 40 percent of all white Americans hold at least a partly negative view toward blacks, and that includes many Democrats and independents.

    Adjectives that describe blacks

More than a third of all white Democrats and independents — voters Obama can’t win the White House without — agreed with at least one negative adjective about blacks, according to the survey, and they are significantly less likely to vote for Obama than those who don’t have such views.

Such numbers are a harsh dose of reality in a campaign for the history books. Obama, the first black candidate with a serious shot at the presidency, accepted the Democratic nomination on the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, a seminal moment for a nation that enshrined slavery in its Constitution.

“There are a lot fewer bigots than there were 50 years ago, but that doesn’t mean there’s only a few bigots,” said Stanford political scientist Paul Sniderman who helped *****yze the exhaustive survey.

The pollsters set out to determine why Obama is locked in a close race with McCain even as the political landscape seems to favor Democrats. President Bush’s unpopularity, the Iraq war and a national sense of economic hard times cut against GOP candidates, as does that fact that Democratic voters outnumber Republicans.

The findings suggest that Obama’s problem is close to home — among his fellow Democrats, particularly non-Hispanic white voters. Just seven in 10 people who call themselves Democrats support Obama, compared to the 85 percent of self-identified Republicans who back McCain.

The survey also focused on the racial attitudes of independent voters because they are likely to decide the election.

Lots of Republicans harbor prejudices, too, but the survey found they weren’t voting against Obama because of his race. Most Republicans wouldn’t vote for any Democrat for president — white, black or brown.

Not all whites are prejudiced. Indeed, more whites say good things about blacks than say bad things, the poll shows. And many whites who see blacks in a negative light are still willing or even eager to vote for Obama.

On the other side of the racial question, the Illinois Democrat is drawing almost unanimous support from blacks, the poll shows, though that probably wouldn’t be enough to counter the negative effect of some whites’ views.

Race is not the biggest factor driving Democrats and independents away from Obama. Doubts about his competency loom even larger, the poll indicates. More than a quarter of all Democrats expressed doubt that Obama can bring about the change they want, and they are likely to vote against him because of that.

Three in 10 of those Democrats who don’t trust Obama’s change-making credentials say they plan to vote for McCain.

Still, the effects of whites’ racial views are apparent in the polling.

Statistical models derived from the poll suggest that Obama’s support would be as much as 6 percentage points higher if there were no white racial prejudice.

But in an election without precedent, it’s hard to know if such models take into account all the possible factors at play.

The AP-Yahoo News poll used the unique methodology of Knowledge Networks, a Menlo Park, Calif., firm that interviews people online after randomly selecting and screening them over telephone. Numerous studies have shown that people are more likely to report embarr*****ing behavior and unpopular opinions when answering questions on a computer rather than talking to a stranger.

Other techniques used in the poll included recording people’s responses to black or white faces flashed on a computer screen, asking parti*****nts to rate how well certain adjectives apply to blacks, measuring whether people believe blacks’ troubles are their own fault, and simply asking people how much they like or dislike blacks.

“We still don’t like black people,” said John Clouse, 57, reflecting the sentiments of his pals gathered at a coffee shop in Somerset, Ohio.

Given a choice of several positive and negative adjectives that might describe blacks, 20 percent of all whites said the word “violent” strongly applied. Among other words, 22 percent agreed with “boastful,” 29 percent “complaining,” 13 percent “lazy” and 11 percent “irresponsible.” When asked about positive adjectives, whites were more likely to stay on the fence than give a strongly positive *****essment.

Among white Democrats, one third cited a negative adjective and, of those, 58 percent said they planned to back Obama.

The poll sought to measure latent prejudices among whites by asking about factors contributing to the state of black America. One finding: More than a quarter of white Democrats agree that “if blacks would only try harder, they could be just as well off as whites.”

Those who agreed with that statement were much less likely to back Obama than those who didn’t.

Among white independents, racial stereotyping is not uncommon. For example, while about 20 percent of independent voters called blacks “intelligent” or “smart,” more than one third latched on the adjective “complaining” and 24 percent said blacks were “violent.”

Nearly four in 10 white independents agreed that blacks would be better off if they “try harder.”

The survey broke ground by incorporating images of black and white faces to measure implicit racial attitudes, or prejudices that are so deeply rooted that people may not realize they have them. That test suggested the incidence of racial prejudice is even higher, with more than half of whites revealing more negative feelings toward blacks than whites.

Researchers used mathematical modeling to sort out the relative impact of a huge swath of variables that might have an impact on people’s votes — including race, ideology, party identification, the hunger for change and the sentiments of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s backers.

Just 59 percent of her white Democratic supporters said they wanted Obama to be president. Nearly 17 percent of Clinton’s white backers plan to vote for McCain.

Among white Democrats, Clinton supporters were nearly twice as likely as Obama backers to say at least one negative adjective described blacks well, a finding that suggests many of her supporters in the primaries — particularly whites with high school education or less — were motivated in part by racial attitudes.

The survey of 2,227 adults was conducted Aug. 27 to Sept. 5. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.1 percentage points.

    ***************************************************************************

I am highly skeptical in regards to the timing of this poll. It seems that the mere mention of Barack’s race to racist people sets them off. I think this will be an aspect played over and over again until Nov 4-which is why you need to do YOUR part. Register to vote, and then do it come election time!!!

  41. FlirtyFawn

    @ Black.Woman.N.Memphis

Yea, I just read that article. DEEP STUFF! And racism isn’t stil alive in America?

I’m telling you these devils will stop at nothing.

  42. Yes, it is very unfornuate that with as musch qualifications that Barack Obama has to make the white House respectful like it once was, racist attitudes in his own party could keep him from reaching that goal. This is why it is more important now more than ever that we vote. It’s only a window of 40 days or less before the election, but if you are not registered, you can register and still be able to vote in November. Please, let your voice be heard! You say what you say on Bossip, but you say it best in that voting booth!!! Remember, there are people who made sacrifices that you and I can have the right to vote-and we must not let it be in vain. We cannot afford 4 or even 8 more years of this ecomony! We cannot stand for our loved ones being sent to unjustified wars!!! We cannot stand for no healthcare, or means to support it!!! We have a chance on November the 4th to place a man such as Senator Barack Obama in the White House to right the wrongs of the past 8 years. Why would you even think to elect Senator John McCain??? He’s a Republican-the same party who knew about 9/11 and then used it as a indirect scare tactic against Americans-the same party to attacked Iraq without no cause-the same party with a horrendous approval rating because American cannot afford food, gas, houses, cars, or even to send their kids to college-the same party who wants to abolish a woman’s right to govern her reproductive organs-the same party who new candidate repeatly says the economy is strong-he’s a Republican, folks!!! We need change, and we need it right now!!! I am sick of the attacks by the Republicans when people are losing houses and retirement funds!!! I am sick of people dying in hospice because they couldn’t afford hospitals!!! 8 is certainly enough, and it’s time for the Republicans to step down.

Anyway, I ask of you-please vote-regardless for who (You should vote for Obama, but it’s your voice) on November 4th.

  43. It’s effed up to see that issues aren’t really important as the popularity. Obama will lose this election if he doesn’t step up his game. The RepubliciKKKan’s know how to play the game. And the reality of elections is that your vote truly doesn’t matter these days because the true pimps in Washington, know who they want to “puppet” run the government. Do any of you remember how Bush got in? At this point, Sarah Palin’s retarded kid has a better chance of winning the election than Obama.

  47. Carver

There was a worse McCain ad the other day. It alleged that the Dems had been “disrespectful” to Palin and said “they called her ‘good looking.’” When the narrator says good looking they show Obama, even though it was Biden that said it.

They’re going for the Emmit Till reaction – same thing they did with Harold Ford, another cl***** act.

    COMEDIAN / POLITICAL SATIRIST SHANG

URGES BLACK AMERICA TO “VOTE FIRST”

Shang Spearheads “Vote First” for National Coalition on Black Civic Parti*****tion’s Unity ‘08 Campaign

Los Angeles, CA – Edgy, insightful, provocative and uncompromising, the stand-up routines of comedian Shang have always echoed the voice and sentiments of the people. And now, as the political comedic voice of “Vote First” a new initiative launched by the National Coalition on Black Civic Parti*****tion’s (NCBCP) Unity ‘08 Campaign, Shang’s performance will strike yet another chord as he encourages his fellow comedians and the black community at large to not only vote, but to be among the first to cast a ballot.

Shang’s involvement and leadership will spearhead, “Vote First” a gr*****roots movement geared toward the hip hop generation urging African Americans to vote early. “In this historic election there will be long lines, major drama at the polls, and we all know the voting machines always break down in the ‘hood,” explains the boisterous comic. “There are a lot of people that would like to suppress the black vote. The games to prevent us from voting have already started. Imagine their disappointment when black folks flip the script and show up early instead of waiting until the last day to vote.” Click here for full press release

PLEASE HELP GET THIS IMPORTANT MESSAGE OUT…. VOTE FIRST AND AVOID THE DRAMA! For flyers and web banners click here http://www.blackcampaign.org

  49. Bohemian Bombshell

Bossip is right on this one. The fact that the ad shows a black man, connected to Fannie Mae as Obama’s advisor, coincides with the Stanford-Yahoo poll about race and voter’s feelings about Obama. The Republican strategists know what they’re doing and they do this on purpose. This is going to be a tough election, but I am confident that Obama will win. However, he will only win if people turn out and vote. If we leave it to the people who normally show up at the polls on election day, then we will hold our breath. This is ours to lose, so we must show up and vote.

I can’t wait for this to be over and for Obama to win. I am sick and tired of race and racism. It seems that no matter how educated we are, how successful, how hard we work, race can be used with a snap of two fingers to pull us down. This is what is happening to Obama and I admire him deeply for carrying on with dignity and pushing forward.

    Obama ‘08
