Can We Discuss Interracial Marriage Without Being Stereotypical?

Paula Patton Robin Thicke

Even today in 2010, there are a lot of misconceptions about interracial dating/relationships.

One writer took these misconceptions to Madame Noire, using her own experience as half of an interracial couple, to spell out some of the biggest ones.

Together for a total of five years and married for three years, the couple endured endless questions from friends, family, acquaintances, and nosy strangers. Here are a few of the tamer questions and her responses.

Great topic, I am in an Interracial marriage and one misbelief is that you have issues with self hate if you choose a husband or wife from a different race and that is the not true. I believe you can be happy with who you are and still find someone from a different race compatible and a good fit for you once you get to know some well you no longer care about what package they come in.

    • RHONYC

      church.:-)

  • jj

no we cant talk about interracial dating without some jackazz bringing up BS generalizations thats just the world we live in even its a bunch of level headed people who want to have a real discussion about this topic its only takes one ignorant fool to come in here with some black women this and black men that
if you like the another race of men or women be with them no need to explain your disliking for your own people no need to explain why its OK its your life do what you want and be done
im tired of people being in somebody business any damn way

  • chrissy

every week its a topic about what race is sleeping wit who…smdh…..

They love to have us (blacks) go back n forth wit each other I NEVER seen these kinda topics on white site just our dumb azz wit the nut azz mess…every week…like they wanna keep us angry or whatever black men say about us…sad….i am glad i am married…..and if he leave me on to the next mf….they ain’t hard to find…..lol

  • Jus Some Cat

Why does it need to be discussed at all? Can’t one person marry another without having to explain it to anyone else?

  • Rae

I married a Cuban man, I’m mixed and we have a beautiful little boy. Every relationship is challenging. What is somewhat annoying, is when you have the old Caucasian women who grew up in the segregation days, staring you and your melting pot family, up down, with the dirtiest most hateful look. I feel more sorry for people like that, than I do angry. I love my family and it is quite interesting to be in a home where more than one language is spoken, and culture is taught. God is good! Don’t come here much, but this is one of those topics that, either people are for interracial marriage, or they are not. I don’t think to many people see it that surprising anymore.

  • Jus Some Cat

The picture above is a perfect example. Both Paula P and Robin T seem to be two nice, talented, attractive people who found and love each other. Don’t have an issue with either one or their union.

Except that she should really be wit me. : )

  • Lady A

I don’t have a problem with interracial dating or marriage as long as a person isn’t just stuck with one race. You know the black guy that only dates white girls or any race but black. Or any race and any gender that refuses to date someone who looks like their mother or father. I do feel that love is blind but just don’t be racist on how you find your love. Don’t ignore someone because they are the wrong color. Ignore them because their a bad person. Love is love. And love is beautiful. If your happy I am happy for you.

  • Allie

Interracial dating is a beautiful thing for everyone that is involved, but like the poster above me said I don’t like when a person cuts themselves off from a certain race of people, that’s not fair, i also think that along with the usual problems of relationships, interracial relationships also have their share of problems because of ignorant people, but if the two love each other it’s worth it

  • U Know Who

I LOVE MY HUBBY!!! He is a black man & I am a hispanic woman. I always told my mother I would marry a black man & I’m extremely happy that my whole family accepted that. I’m NOT concerned of who thinks what, as long as my relationship is steady. I do feel interracial relationship is the way to go when someone from your own race can’t give u what u want. Our beautiful children also RESPECT both cultures, which to me is very important regardless if there are any dislikes.

  • borderlineamazing

Why do we need to discuss it? Why does this website ALWAYS need to discuss it? Why does this website always have to put SWIRLING in regards to interracial dating? Judging by the ugly bitter black woman who owns this websites picture I can tell why. Oh and Paula is half-white.

    • MISS

IF IT BOTHERS YOU SO MUCH WHY ARE YOU HERE? U SOUND LIKE A BITTER BLACK MAN TO ME CALLING NAMES AND CRITICIZING THINGS THAT HE FEARS.
MOST OF YOU ARE SCARED AND ANGRY THAT BLACK FEMALES ARE STARTING TO SWIRL JUST LIKE U.

    • MISS

YES..PAULA IS HALF WHITE BUT SHE’S CONSIDERED A BLACK WOMAN JUST LIKE HALLE AND ALICIA KEYS. YOU BITTER BLACK MEN ARE SO SAD,YOU TRY TO TAKE AWAY HER BLACKNESS BECAUSE SHE’S NOT WITH ONE OF YOU,JUST LIKE SOME OF YOU TRIED WITH HALLE BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY SHE’S A BLACK FEMALE, A BLACK FEMALE MARRIED TO A HANDSOME SUCESSFUL WHITE MAN , YOU JUST HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT.

  • http://Bossip caramela

agree with chrissy. what this topic does is get people writing in with i’m with a white/italian/arab man and he treats me better than any black man or i’m a black man and i hate black women,i only date white women and she cleans and cooks…you know those comments and i think, date who the fu@k you want and stop pulling your race down! society sees you as black, that colour don’t wash off and they’ll always be some pr!ck out there to remind you incase you forget. people should date whoever they like and who’s good to and for them.when black people bash each other it sounds like we hate each other.so they’ll never be a non stereotypical debate.

  • borderlineamazing

Sabrina and Miss are two dumb birds. Amazing you can tell someones gender and race through a blog comment. #bothepicfails

    • MISS

GET OVER IT JERK, THE MORE YOU TRY TO EXPLAIN THE MORE SUSPECT YOU ARE!
      PATHETIC JEALOUS BM

  • Sabrina The Teenage Bytch

    @borderlineamazing

It is also funny that black men are trolling as “biracial females” to make a point…lol

    • borderlineamazing

Why would I lie about something like that? My mother is black and my father is white. You don’t believe me? Ah well. Sounds like you have self hate and jealousy issues. I love all people who are good people. Interracial debates/topics on this website are redundant and ridiculous and I’m tired of it. The woman who runs this website has the same issues you do but oh wait I’m “pretending” to be biracial because I’m sick of it? Right. You’re a bright one. Funny how I said the chick who runs this site is bitter yet ALL of you came running mad at me like I said ALL BLACK WOMEN. I guess you thought it applied to you huh? Guilty conscience?

    • MISS

THESE JEALOUS BM DO THIS ALL OVER THE INTERNET..THEY HATE TO SEE A BEAUTIFUL SISTER WITH A WHITE GUY SO THEY PRETEND TO BE EVERYTHING ELSE TO SPEW OUT THEIR JEALOUSY.

  • khiosha

    NO … NEXT QUESTION .

  • Bethany "ACID FACE" Storro

    typo…”by all means”

  • Pam#2

of course not! if you guys really cared about rationally discussing ANYTHING you’d make it required to sign up for an account and ban the troll accounts. DUHHH

  • Sabrina The Teenage Bytch

    @borderlineamazing

little boy stfu, your use of the word “bitter” gave you away. Black men love accusing black women of being “bitter”

Now grow some balls and stop trolling as this imaginary “biracial female.”

  • Geroge

Sabrina, let me chime in here for a min, then you can keep ranting with that mixed whatever. Black men love accusing black women of being angry, not really bitter. We accuse of being negative, loud, rude and obnoxious. We accuse you of being fat, having bad attitudes, over confindent and having confrontational behaviors. Most men want a gentle and feminine woman and black men see many black women as being overly confrontational, rude and brash.

    • Bethany "ACID FACE" Storro

Don’t speak for any other black man other then yourself!

@jay..i don’t have to use any other names to tell the truth about BM..prove what you accuse or get lost Inspector Gadget!

  • borderlineamazing

@Miss wtf are you talking about? Your last comment made no sense. No wonder why I’m arguing with a crazy person. Next.

  • THE REAL PRETTYBROWNEYES

OK, FIRST I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT I REALLY DIDN’T WANT TO EVEN COMMENT ON A TOPIC AS STUPID AND PETTY AS THIS. BUT I FELT COMPELLED AFTER HEARING SOME OF THE MOST IGNORANT COMMENTS POSTED ON THIS THREAD. I AM A PRODUCT OF AN INTERRACIAL RELATIONSHIP MYSELF, SO OF COURSE I THINK IT’S A GREAT THING. WE ARE ALL OF ONE RACE, THE HUMAN RACE. AND WHEN WE GET OVER SOMETHING AS PETTY AS SKIN COLOR, THEN WE WILL BE ABLE TO LIVE OUR LIVES IN PEACE! I CONSIDER MYSELF AFRICAN AMERICAN, I WAS RAISED BY A STRONG BLACK WOMAN WHO NEVER MADE ME OR MY SISTER FEEL LIKE WE WERE ANY DIFFERENT THAN THE REST OF OUR FAMILY. WE WERE ALSO VERY ACCEPTED BY OUR (CUBAN) FATHER AND HIS FAMILY. AND TO MARQUIS, GEORGE & TERRI, WHERE DO YOU ALL LIVE? (IF IN FACT, YOUR NOT ALL THE SAME PERSON LIKE JAY SAID.) BY THE WAY, GOOD LOOKING OUT JAY. MAKES ALOT OF SINCE NOW THAT I THINK ABOUT IT. HA HA! YOU SAY THAT THERE ARE NO BLACK WOMEN WORTH ANYTHING THAT YOU CAN FIND. MAYBE IF YOU GET OUT OF THE HOOD OR THE GHETTO YOU CAN FIND SOME. WHERE I LIVE (ATL) THERE ARE PLENTY OF EDUCATED,SOPHISTICATED,INDEPENDENT, SELF-SUPPORTING “BLACK WOMEN” WHERE I LIVE. I HAVE A FLEET OF SORORITY SISTERS AND FRIENDS WHO ARE ALL THESE THINGS AS IS MYSELF. AND ALL OF US ARE DRAMA-FREE AND BABY DADDY FREE. YOU SEE MORE WHITE TRASH THEN YOU DO HOOD RATS. AND LET’S NOT FORGET THAT THERE IS TRASH IN EVERY RACE. INSTEAD OF BASHING BLACK WOMEN, WHY DON’T YOU TRY TO RAISE UP OUR SISTA’S FOR ONCE. HAVE YOU EVER NOTICED THAT WHITE MEN DON’T TRASH WHITE WOMEN, EVEN IF THEY DON’T CHOOSE TO DATE THEM. ALWAYS BLACK MEN THOUGH! WHY IS THAT? SO MAYBE THERE IS SOME TRUTH TO THAT WHOLE SELF-HATING THEORY HUH? WHAT YOU THINK? THINGS THAT MAKE YOU SAY HMMM!

    • Geroge

Prettybrowneyes there need to be more black women like yourself. Your mixed right, well your momma did a great job raising you and you made your point quite well. This is a sister who gets it, she wasn’t negative and brought her feminine talents to the table by using her female savvy and charm. This is what I mean by femininity, the way some of you act you seem to have lost it. Thank prettybrowneyes her words were as beautiful as she probably is. That’s power ladies not being overly confrontational.
