When the Checks Stop Coming In

Now the Bush’s ish has affected the big lenders with student loans:
Dozens of the country’s biggest lenders have stopped doling out student loans to struggling college kids because of the economic upheaval – leaving scores of would-be scholars combing the want ads this fall instead of hitting the books. Many lending experts say panicked banks are still reeling from mortgage meltdowns and are leery about taking a chance with their dwindling liquidity. More than 33 banks and lenders have completely shuttered or suspended their private loan programs in the past year, and more than 100 have stopped participating in all or parts of the federally guaranteed student-loan program, according to FinAid.org, a Web site that keeps track of the student-loan industry.
The scurrying ranks include former lending powerhouses such as MyRichUncle.com, Bank of America and Campus Door, which was backed by Lehman Brothers. “The credit crisis has had a tremendous impact on student loans,” said Keith Alliotts, of TuitionBids.com, a website that helps students find the best prices on loans for college. “It’s hard to find anyone doing student loans because so many have left the space.” He said his office is inundated with calls from frantic students and their parents, scrambling to come up with the cash for college. “It’s a sad state of affairs,” he said. Kristina Fernandes, 20, was so desperate that she borrowed $8,000 at 18 percent interest rate to cover her expenses at NYU this semester. “It sucks,” she said. Her federal student-aid package gives her $15,000 a year for school, but she reckons that her tuition, room and board will reach $40,000 for the year. Fernandes, an economics student, took out the loan and works two jobs to swing it. “I’m having a hard time with the whole time-management thing because I spend so much time working instead of studying,” she said.
Kids better start working at Mickey D’s early or they will just be assed out. As if saving up for college was not hard enough, now your loans are up for grabs.

Bossip, yall took the picture back to 91? I was looking to see if I was in the crowd too. Ain’t nothing like that black & gold (since 1906).
I do feel sorry for the kids trying to get an education without coming from a family with money to fund their education. All those Alphas and AKAs in the picture have their education. I truly hope that will be the case for my brothers and sorors that take a picture in 2008 and beyond.

On another note, even if Obama or McCain gets into office, I don’t think there will be much change because they will spend their presidency cleaning up after Bush and his Neo-Republican followers. People are expecting change to occur over night and that is not how the democratic process of America works. Next, no one is taking into account that our recession is simiular to that of the Great Depression; where there was m*****ive speculation of the markets by the rich and powerful in the absence of government regulation.
It’s a shame that some would rejoice in the fact that other’s college education is at risk because of the current status of the financial markets.
I guess it is okay to rejoice seeing that you’ve graduated, but let’s see if you’ll get a job; let’s see how far your dollar will stretch after inflation.
The next president, whether Republican or Democrate will have to place regulations on all markets and end this nonesense that the Nixon era has placed us in.

I can definitely understand what’s going on, being a freshman college student myself. I haven’t been able to get a loan yet, and my part time job and work study doesn’t even come close to covering it. That’s why I’m comtemplating not living on-campus next semester so the dormroom and meal plan won’t be a factor; but transportation will thusly be a factor. Life is just hard right now, but what I don’t want to do is quit and then come back.

the amount of student loans that banks give is driven by how the previous borrowers pay back their loans. so if people are not paying back their loans it decreases that institutions ability to have others borrow money.

Honestly, I think Americans rely too much on student loans for school. I used to listen to the older people in my family that put themselves through school, be it a big city or small town, by working and studying hard. I have a 60 year old cousin that cleaned houses and ran track, was her sorority president and was on the debate team. She d@mn near smacked me when I said I didn’t have to work (my freshman year).
Loans are too readily available without giving families information on managing them and paying them back. That’s a major burden to put on the shoulders of a young person (18-24 years old) after they graduate/drop out/find a job.
Just an observation

Being a doctor or lawyer ain’t all it is cracked up to be. Most of their money goes to paying back their student loans. All those years in law and medical school are not cheap. Many doctors and lawyers are not big time ballers. Just because they have to pay off they huge ***** loans and they weren’t lucky enough to find a firm/hospital that pays well. My friend who is a doctor (and my personal physician) is an Ethiopian brotha and he lives in apartment and doesn’t have car.
Me, I’m studying to be a social worker. I know will not become rich from it, but I like it. I have 3 more semesters to go. I’m using student loans to pay for the majority of my tuition. I also have a scholarship and a grant, which barely makes a dent in the tuition. And I pay the rest of the tuition out of my pocket. If I lose my student loan, I only have enough in my savings for one semester. I don’t want to ask my parents to pay for my last two semesters. I hope many college students’ loans are not affected.
Also I hope George W. Bush, ***** Cheney, Rupert Murdoch, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly, Ann Coulter, Dennis Miller, George Bush Sr. Ronald Reagan, all burn in hell. White conservative political pundits scaring dumb ***** white people into voting for stupid white politicians who do nothing but ***** over the public so they can make their chicken***** backers rich.
Also ***** the Democratic party for having no ***** to stand up to these greedy Republican mother*****ers. *****holes like Bill Clinton, Zell Miller, and Joseph Lieberman who actually appropriated Republican philosophies which made the Democratic party shift to the right.
I’m a little bit *****ed, I was afraid that student loans were going to be affected. I was never thrilled about taking loans, but needed them since college is so expensive. Hell, even if my loans don’t get affected, that is a *****ty thing to happen to people. Government is *****ing with people’s lives.

It’s terrible that many lenders will opt out of the college loan business.
However, the good news is that college tuition will probably stop rising so fast. Like those generic drugs, Walmart will opening a university near you where you can pay $400.00 a semester for your $7.50 an hour job that you’re going to get after college.

Financial aid and student loans are the new “food stamps” and “welfare” for young people.
Hell, at our school we give free tuition to anyone over the age of 62. They come to school, file for financial aid and get a social security check too. They rack up. Old folks love that “Studay Abroad” *****. They have all the time in the world to take dem trips!!

For those who have graduated can’t even find decent enough jobs to pay back the loans. By the time you pay your typical household bills you don’t have shyt left to pay those high azz monthly student loan payments. I told the student loan people like “you want me to pay you, I’m barely surviving. If I pay that large amount per month my kids and I will go hungry.” So they decided to take money out of my paycheck but it is far less then what they wanted monthly.

For tose who think the story is fake, do some research. Many banks have opted out of the private educational loan business and some major banks are even opting out of the guaranteed student loan program. It’s going to be tight with the loans for a little while
BTW, my sorors in the picture are from Fall 90 (I grew up with one of them). Everyone in that picture is at least in the 37-40 age range. Bossip, you definitely need more recent pics.

Please, do some damn research, Bush has nothing to do with what the economy is doing. This is base on the reform act of 1995. Janet Reno a democrat under Clinton reign opted to red line banks who did’nt give out loans to minorities. Well feeling they were locked up on giving loans to any and everyone or they would be harr*****ed by A.C.O.R.N( need I say Obama worked for.)This was a democratic program that was miss handled and was foretold it would happen 2 Years ago by John McCain on the senate floor. Do some damn homework or don’t say a damn thing. Obama will place all of us in a social enconmy with social aggendas. Barney Frank, Nacny Peloski, and Obama need to be questioned Obama under his senate run has gain more money than anyone. Read up!

It’s HARD out here! It’s sooo unfortunate that college kids are getting played, especially the ones that really mostly on financial aid and can’t fall back on the parents for a hot $10-20 G’s a year to get through…smh. We need Obama and we need Jesus behind the wheel!
