This is so sad. She was such a beautiful young lady with a bright future:
A Long Island teen returning from a Brooklyn tutoring job was fatally mowed down by an allegedly drunken driver just two blocks from her home — and her heartbroken mother ripped into the motorist in court yesterday. “Murderer! Murderer!” Yolanda Silvera screamed at Kenneth Serwan as he was arraigned on a DWI charge in Central Islip District Court.
Her daughter, Tynielle Silvera, 18 — an honors high-school grad who dreamed of a legal career — was crossing Sunrise Highway at County Line Road in Amityville around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday when she was run down by Serwan’s Chevy Suburban. “My child had so much promise,” sobbed the victim’s mom, who had to be held upright by relatives and court officers as she was escorted from the courtroom while screaming and slamming her fists against walls. “He should rot in hell.”
She added that Tynielle “graduated with a 94 average. She wanted to be a lawyer.” Before the crash, the victim had taken the Long Island Rail Road home from Bedford-Stuyvesant, where she was tutoring 13-year-old Leanora Genus.
“I learned so much from her,” Leanora said through sobs yesterday. “Last night, she taught me a new rule in math.” Leanora said Silvera was a sister-like mentor who often told her to strive for her dreams and stay focused on school and achievement. “She told me don’t get off track. I love her.”
Serwan, who has a prior drunk-driving arrest from 1992, was held in lieu of $100,000 bail. Police said more charges are possible as their accident investigation proceeds. Authorities said Silvera died instantly when Serwan, 46, a Lindenhurst resident with a wife and three teenage kids, ran her down. After exiting his car and approaching Silvera’s lifeless body, Serwan waited for police to arrive, cops said.
Investigators said they were still trying to determine his speed and whether he had a red or green light at the intersection. The suspect works in Manhattan as a database manager and serves as a youth-soccer coach.
“He’s a murderer. He killed my child,” said Yolanda Silvera. “He needs to be put away. He shouldn’t even be arraigned. He should be hung.”
Tynielle Silvera enrolled this fall at Nassau Community College, had a steady boyfriend and big plans for life.
Her distraught beau, Kevaughn Hammond, said she’d been accepted at Ivy League colleges but wanted to study on Long Island to stay close to her family and friends. “She is the only girl I’ve ever loved,” he said. “I can’t believe she’s gone. She had so much promise and so much ahead of her.”
Here’s the bastard responsible:
