Reassessing The Gentrification Debate: Is It All About Race or Just Economics?

"gentrification"

Chris and Trey are brothers who grew up in mid-city New Orleans. Trey left home and became an attorney in New York City while Chris stayed behind and has long been dedicated to his neighborhood. But an impending building project is slated to transform their area, causing Chris anxiety about current residents being displaced because the new developments will be too expensive for people to live in. But Trey believes the impending change will be beneficial to the neighborhood.

The brothers are fictional characters yet their story resonates with an issue that is very real and is continuously stirring up controversial debates in cities across the nation, including Brooklyn’s Williamsburg section, Washington, D.C., New Orleans, and Los Angeles’ Echo Park.

It’s really sad that we are slowly but surely being pushed out of our own neighborhoods for others to live “comfortably”. I believe that gentrification is a way of trying to move races into specific areas of our cities.

    • E.C. from D.C.

Yeah race definitely affects economomics ….. D.C. has been getting his HAAAAARRRDDDD with rising home sales etc over the last like 10 yrs especially.

Whites ran to the burbs and got themselves in their gated communities. Now gas is high, they are losing their jobs, it cost more to commute to the burbs, taxes in the burbs are higher, so they now want to move back to the cities. Nothing they do brings them peace. Babylon has to fall.

Race is involved but so economic power.

I love my people but maybe if we didn’t spend so much money on materialistic bullshyt we may be able to fight off gentrification.

I’ve seen black people on welfare rocking some of the flyest clothes around, meanwhile they are struggling to pay their bills…smfh

    Money? Naaa….

The only reason is that Russia & China just denounced the U.S. kurrency….Yep, they don’t want that fiat kash circulating around their kountries…

Race, it kan be…I kome from the hood, and why is everyone in the hood of color??? Or maybe the political word is PROJECT…lOOK UP THE DEFINITION, then look at the experiments they have done on us since the trans-atlantic, jim crow, william lynch….

A big project…Time to wake up blk people, We all sit here living the way we do, killing eachother, degrading our beautiful women, and we fill it’s the norm! If any of you kan take the time and study the william lynch letter you will see that we were komepletely stripped of out TRUE NATURAL SELVES and given a whole new Nature, a nature that already existed…so what does that tell you? Envy & jealousy kannot exist with just 1 person, it komes to fluition when there is 2 people. Now koncentrate you all…The object of the Game and the plan to survive is to get bakk to how we were BEFORE we fell from civilization. Thery say you kan be the hardest, toughest, super G on the planet….but there is 1 thing blakk people are soooo afraid to do….

    And that is CHANGE!

    • super steph!

well ya a housing project. theyre build for retired people as well. and entry into the projects is income based, so blame the people not accepting your college and job applications, not the planners who want to keep you from being homeless.

YALL DIDNT KNOW?? MONEY IS THE NEW JIM CROW!

Its more about economics. It just so happens that many coloured and or poor people live in areas that are being gentrified. Which communities are being renovated? poor urban neihborhoods……its definitely about the money…. Harlem being the perfect example.
