BLACKSVILLE — Coal production at a mine in Monongalia County came to a halt today when every union miner stayed home, as part of a political protest.

It was an idle day Monday at the Blacksville #2 Mine.

More than 440 workers who are members of the United Mine Workers of America took what’s called a Memorial Day instead of going to work.

Union officials say they took the day to protest after a film crew from the National Rifle Assocation showed up at the Consol mine last week to interview union workers.

They say the crew tried to get union coal miners to speak out against Barak Obama.

The UMWA has endorsed the democratic presidential nominee.

“This was a surprise visit,” explained VP Local 1702, Safety Chairman Eric Greathouse, “and a lot of the miners felt this was a direct slap in the face of the union because they were trying to coerce our people into saying things against Barck Obama.”

“Consol doesn’t let anybody on their property – never,” said Safety Committee Member Mark Dorsey, “And for them to let the NRA come on the property and solicit our membership was totally uncalled for. We made our endorsement to our political process and we didn’t bother them and they shouldn’t be harassing our membership over this.”

The workers will return to work at 12:01 Tuesday morning.

A spokesperson for Consol said the company is not issuing any comment on the day.

I know this is off-topic, but I came across some helpful info regarding the wearing of campaign paraphernalia to the polls on theroot(dot)com. Please pardon the lengthy post.

Also, next Monday, Oct. 6 is the deadline in many states for voter registration. You can register online at www(dot)rockthevote(dot)com.

In most states, you’re in the clear. Wearing campaign paraphernalia—a button, a sticker and, of course, a T-shirt—in support of any candidate is seen as passive electioneering. Some states are more lenient. In Kentucky, Marylandand, Florida, election officials most often make no fuss about voter attire. The only thing banned there is the display of excessive campaign garb (i.e. head-to-toe Obama gear) or outright solicitation. Wearing campaign paraphernalia and lingering in the polling station is also a no-no in those states.

Other states, such as Pennsylvaniaand New York, maintain laws on passive electioneering while remaining lax in enforcement. In New York, for example, refusing to comply with the request of election officials to remove an item is considered a misdemeanor, but arrests have rarely—if ever—been made.

Not everyone is as laid-back about the issue. In the District of Columbia, strict rules apply. Prior to entering a polling station in the District, everyone is required to remove or cover up any exposed campaign paraphernalia. No exceptions.

Still confused? No worries. Before you head to the polls, figure out the specifics for your area. Contact the state board of elections. Because of the widespread effect of the mysterious e-mails, some state boards are prominently displaying regulations on the law on their website.

While there isn’t uniform enforcement of the law, the important thing to remember is that you absolutely will not lose your right to vote. No election official has the right to turn away a voter for passive electioneering, whether the law exists in that state or not. If an election official calls you out on your campaign wear, feel free to ask questions. It’s your right as a voter! The most they will ask you to do is remove your button or turn your “Mac is Back” tee inside out. If you still feel a little shaky about the situation, call 1-866-Our-Vote and ask for help.

I think the chances of Palin coming across as competent are slim to none because she isn’t. While she has a record of accomplishments in Alaska, it’s painfully obvious that she is lacking any real awareness of domestic and international issues, which is a necessity for anyone who would be the second in line to the presidency. McCain is 72, has fought cancer, and has not disclosed his full medical records. The chances that he would not finish a full term are very high; therefore, we’re strongly looking at the possibility of a President Palin. That would be disastrous for the country, IMHO.

And, yes, I think she’s setting a horrible example for women, particularly when there are many capable Republican women who could ably fill the post of vp — Condoleezza Rice, Meg Whitman, Christine Todd Whitman, Kay Baily Hutchison, just to name a few.
