Record Sales in the Gutter

Record sales are in the gutter according to a report by Livesteez:

Record labels are approaching another financially weak year, as a minimum of 200 million albums in the last quarter is now required in order to break even with last year’s low total. According to Variety, the music industry officially closed out with a total of 297.9 million albums sold for the third quarter making it already 12 percent less than the previous year. 2007 saw a total of 500.5 million in sales with over 30 percent of the records purchased stemming from the fourth quarter. However, this year the industry would have to up that amount to over 40 percent. With a strong line-up of upcoming albums believed to drop before 2009 including releases from Kanye West, 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Ludacris, Busta Rhymes and possible albums from Dr. Dre, Eminem and Andre 3000, the goal may still be attainable.

Record sales are lower than ever, but boy those 100 pack of blank discs from Best Buy are selling like hot cakes. Help should be on its way with Kanye and Luda looking to drop albums this year. We would love to buy those albums, but times are so tough we might have to use one of our blank discs and go without the pretty pictures and credits on the “real album.” Sad face.

  • Lacombe Redbone

Blade, where you been baby! *wink*

  • chaka1

No one is buying albums anymore. Record sales have been declining since 1998. The recording industry is wasting money buy mass producing and distributing CDs. They are too expensive at $16.99. Everything should be digital. Not to mention the fact that some artists should be strictly “singles” artists and not put out full blown CD’s with all the filler and half-baked songs. You make the money now in concert tours or commercial endorsements.

What kind of idiots write this blog? Damn the ignorance of statements like that. If you can’t afford it, don’t buy it.

  • Jahp

    and livesteez is reliable source?

    very questionable

“Record sales are lower than ever, but boy those 100 pack of blank discs from Best Buy are selling like hot cakes.”

You better believe it. I just bought some the other day. Damned if I’ll pay all that money for the same old tired crap. I will admit though, if I hear a song or artist that sounds unique and has a style different to all the other usual crap then I’ll pay for it. Otherwise, it’s all Limewire.

  • The_Truth

**Record sells are FAR more than just Hip-Hop. . .put the same pressure on Britney Spears, Kid Rock, Fall Out Boy, etc. to boost sales.

  • Anton Slizzardhands

Record sales are in the gutter according to a report by who ?

  • mel b

Bump both of them. I’m buying Janelle Monae, might as well listen to something that’s gonna better myself. Kanye raps about white women & I honestly dont remeber Luda rapping about anything intelligent. Yep… Janelle Monae will get my mon-ey!

  • Just Sayin

Look at Jabba Jaw and Iil Camel…

  • lala#1

eh, times is hard and I damn sure cant be buying no albums to support Ludacris rebuilding his burnt down pool house which is probably bigger than my spot now.

IF I AINT GIVE A FUC I’D JUST GET A FEW SONGS…BUT SINCE I DIG KANYE AND LUDA I PROMISE TO LIMEWERE ALLLL THE SONGS OF BOTH ALBUMS DOWN TO THE LAST TRACK!

  • Dax Xenos

Limewire & itunes are the music biz. I did however go and buy that new Robin Thicke,& T.I. . Really liking Robin Thicke CD, and T.I.’s is okay.

  • MS k

I’m not buying a whole CD to hear 2 good songs out of 16 tracks. I want a variety of all the artists on one on CD.MARY J., USHER, JAZMINE SULLIVAN, ALICIA KEYS,T.I.,NEYO.You catch my drift. Start selling Cd like that and I’ll buy.

  • sniper

PEOPLE SHOULDNT BUY ANY OF THEIR CDs, period.

These are are rich enough as it is. They need to shut up and go on tour, and earn the money that we pay them.

  • ***

And, it’s going to get worse.

  • sniper

LAST TIME I BOUGHT A CD WAS 11 YRS AGO.

THESE MOFOs aren’t getting my money for their CDs.

They only get my money when they go on tour and perform for me (us).

  • Just Sayin

I got a MAC and I get all my music FREE.

  • John Doe

Why buy an album when you can download it for free off the Internet? Back in the ’90′s, with a dial up connection, it would take around 20 minutes to download one song. Nowadays, with a high speed connection, it takes less than 10 minutes to download a FULL album with cover art (pretty pictures and credits). When you buy your blank CD’s, buy a pack of CD labels to print your cover art.

You can make approximately 15 CD’s with that $16.99 you would spend on one “legitimate” CD. And with the way the economy is today….shoot, it’s a no brainer.

Pirate Bay and torrents…a beautiful combination!!!

  • Al-Anon

    But Guys,

Don’t you feel a little guilty of depriving your favorite artists and their record companies of revenue?

  • http://thatblackmagic.blogspot.com Keith

My problem is many times there are only a few good songs on these albums. The singles are good, but the rest of the album is filler. With things being so tighter right, I can’t afford to buy something like that whether I want it or not though.

  • John Doe

    @ Al-Anon

    No

Do artists feel guilty about taking your money for a CD that has maybe 2 – 4 good songs?

  • Tn_Finest24

LUDACRIS ” THEATRE OF THE MINDS” COMING NOVEMBER 11TH!!!!

  • sniper

    @ Al-Anon

Nope, it actually makes me feel great when I don’t buy their CDs and still can listen to their songs, in high quality, for free. Why should anyone feel guilty at all – it’s not our fault that the song is out there for free.

Even if their album is filled with good songs – I would still not buy their album – Why buy it when it’s free? – I’d probably only buy it if the artist would not be able to put food on her/his table if I didn’t pay for it…but clearly, that’s not the case.

  • Cage

Realplayer Download. Sorry i would have to hear the whole album first (On rhapsody or somethin) before coppin it… I can’t remember the last album I actually paid for…. Might have been M.A.D.E. by Scarface… yup… lol bout 10-11 months ago

  • sniper

The Idea of actually paying my hard earned money for an Album is ABSURD in today’s world

  • He’s Presidential

I don’t think these artists are hurting for money and all making the forbes list. They’re pockets are good.

  • bria

They had to have seen this coming. When everyone has the same sound and image what did they think was going to happen. You flooded the market with garbage and now the market is responding.

  • joey bishop

these rappers cds aren’t worth buying..downloading and bootleggin was the BEST thang that coulda happened!

  • Encyclopedia Brown

Since when are reports by Wacksteez legit?

    C’mon people

  • DA TRUFF — DA HOE TRUFF & NUTTIN’ BUTT DA TRUFF

BEATS ME WHY KANYE IS LOOKIN’ LIKE THE HOMO VERSION OF “SHAFT” FROM THE 70s

  • http://www.youtube(hoodflick357) stanley mahone

NOW IT,S TIME TO TAKE THE GAME TO ANOTHER LEVEL. I,M SURE IF ALL YALL PUT YOUR HEADS TOGETHER YOU,LL FIND THE ANSWER. KEEP THE FAITH, I HAVE. STAN THE MAN!!!

I think people are just tired of rap and (some) r&B artists continuously showing off and literally throwing money our tv screens. They have gotten away with that behavior for way too long.

  • Prince

the music isn’t as good any more it’s just not

  • Nita

Luda look good in a suit! he should always dress like that!!!!

  • AzzedineAliaFan

You can clearly see why: Artists dropping cds every 6 months, and the quality is not good, i get tired of supporting these arrogant a$$es that don’t put out good music, rushing out sh** to stay relevant cause they scared someone is going to steal their spot (Beyonce for instance). Give me the old sh** anyday!! Artists today are in it for the glorification, not the love of music!!

  • fly_guy

I can’t improve on the last comment.

    No-talent “pop tarts” (pretty, but

    utterly umimpressive voices), and

    arrogant, pompous jackass dudes who

think that posturing and posing is

a viable substitute for talent —

let SOMEBODY ELSE MAKE THEM RICH –

no way in hell I’ll pay for their “music”.

  • flygrl689

Rumor has it that THE ROCKSTARS are producing some of the baddest artists in the game today. I had to checkit for myself. The verdict? The kids are LEGIT! I listened to their remix of Rihanna’s “Disturbia” and Kanye’ “Love Lockdown” and was BLOWN AWAY!!!! Music lovers, y’all gotta check these producers out!!!

    http://www.myspace.com/musicbytherockstars

  • Davina

They need 2 do real music!! Sick of music industry. almost all the singers sound the same thats crazy.

And I agree stop releasing an album each year (Kanye-Jay-Luda-Bey-Rihanna-Lil weezy,ect..)We can’t buy each year when the songs quality is so bad. Until The change= GOD Bless Peer2Peer

  • Mrs. T

This is a damn shame the white man ain’t gotta say one word on a cd and it sells. DAMN now that’s spittin.
