Former Ex-Headmistress Goes After Oprah’s Stacks

Nomvuyo Mzamane, the former headmistress of Oprah Winfrey’s South African Leadership Academy for Girls, filed a defamation lawsuit against the TV star in Philadelphia Common Pleas Court Friday in an attempt to salvage her professional reputation, PEOPLE has learned exclusively.
The civil suit, filed by attorney Tim McGowan, says Winfrey “launched what amounted to a defamatory campaign” against Mzamane late last year by implying that Mzamane is “untrustworthy, failed the students of the academy, did not care about the students at the academy, knew of alleged physical and sexual abuse at the academy and participated in a cover-up of the alleged abuse,” according to legal papers. The suit cites comments to the media Winfrey made last October and November in the wake of a dorm matron at the school being charged with assaulting and abusing students.
Mzamane, 39, also filed a defamation suit against the blog the Huffington Post and publicity expert Joan Stewart for a Nov. 19, 2007, posting by Stewart saying Mzamane was charged in connection with the scandal.

@No Way, I cosign 100%. I think Oprah was genuinely trying to do a good thing by opening that school for girls in Africa. However it’s been a nightmare from day one. She doesn’t understand that the mentality of Africans over there is completely different than what we have over here.

Oprah had the best intentions, I still think it was a good idea to build the school. Now she has to do her best to make sure everything is run properly.

Oprah is amazing and she is truly looking out for the students of her school. Its too bad that she misjudged a staff member, but I’m glad she discovered what was going on an intervened.

She definitely had good intentions and genuinenly thought and TRIED to do a great thing, but some elements saw it as a payday from day one. I do wish she would have built one over here, even though most, or I should say, a lot of people don’t value education anymore (sadly) there are some who still do and there are youth here that could definitely have benefited from a facility like that. We definitely need more future leaders here at home committed to excellence and all the things that that school was supposed to do. I still applaud her.
See, Oprah try to help these jungle bunnies and it’s been nothing but problems ever since. Lock the doors on that “school” and sponser 3 or 4 of them to come to America once they see how good life is here then they will appreciate it and not want to mess that up. Leave UM fufu and the rest of them right there.
And that’s why when you get rich, you really can’t help anyone except doing, so anonymously..Isn;t this the same teacher who molested those kids?….People will turn on you quick and find a reason to try to take your paper from you…That’s why you keep your friends and family around you and you let everyone roll on by….less problems…

Alrighty. Not trying to be funny, but are defamation suits in Africa common? I bet not. It’s because it is Oprah. Sounds like some greedy U.S. attorney saw an opportunity to get PAID by meddling in that school mess.
FYI, defamation lawsuits are quite common here in South Africa. Yes, Oprah’s intentions were good but she had no right to imply that the school’s headmistress was involed in the abuse of the kids. Afterall, she’s not the one facing trial. I do wish Oprah had built the school in America and not here. What kind of school does not allow parents to see their children when they want to? We always knew there was something fishy going on in that school…
oprah will never do anything like this in America for the Afican American community.
I think she has read to many ignorant statements from her own community rejecting her.
I think as Oprah soared, too many african americans were not able to comprehend how she was able to attain such heights and readily attributed her success to her popularity with white america.

@ Ms *****ody you are wrong if you go to a lot of boarding schools the parents are not able to just come to the school whenever they want. They have to wait until visiting time to see their children unless it is an emergency. So it is not uncommon nor suspicious to keep the parents a way at boarding schools.

That is so true the school was organized like a typical BOARDING SCHOOL which are QUITE COMMON in SA, Hilton etc.. and no parents cannot just ROCK up at any time, here yall go trying to make sense out of nonsense, if the parents didn’t like the RULES, REGULATIONS, ETC..they should not have allowed their child to go from JUMP, JUMP. NOt put them in and then try to DICTATE and WIGGLE ALL AROUND. They all saw a payday and most of the girls weren’t even ‘poor’ they were children of corrupt officials. She had no idea how from head mistress on down, parents, officials, they had a totally different script for her school and ofcourse noone was going to say anything from JUMP just let her spend her millions then start coming with the BULL. If this woman thinks she can take down Oprah Winfrey she got another thing coming. She is going to lose this case superbly and is going to get stuck with paying the court cost. If she thought things were bad before they are going to get a lot worse. You do not awake a sleeping giant.

i say she should’nt have done it anyway, she put all this money in this school, what they did is there lifestyle, she can not change that with money, this happens there everyday, she should of went over there and help with housing not schooling. build them a house, let them be able to come home. yes education is great, but how are you going to take them from provety and but also bring the same people living in provety to school them it was never going to work.
Black people have no unity no matter where there are in the world (Africa,America or Europe) it’s sad to say but anytime you try to help or work with your “own community” they take you down or get you into trouble.
So plan day one properly and enjoy it.
It’s good to see us as Black Americans help others, but it would’ve been preferable for her to *****ist the poor sectors of our *****unity instead of someone else’s. We have to understand that just because we’re all black, it doesn’t mean that we’re all the same, or part of a larger family. We have no connection with Africans whatsoever. We’re American.
