More details have come to light in yesterday’s California high school….

Two teens, one in critical condition while the other in stable condition, have been wounded while in class as a loaded gun brought by another teen to school went off in his backpack, according to Los Angeles Police.

The incident happened at Los Angeles’ Gardena High School during one of the students’ break period, Principal Rudy Mendoza said.

According to the Associated Press, a 15 year-old girl is currently in critical condition at the Los Angeles County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center after the bullet grazed her skull, while another same-aged boy is stable after getting hit in the neck by the same bullet.

Authorities say that the 17 year-old is in custody while authorities investigate where he got the gun.

Apparently, the gun went off after the 10th grader dropped his backpack where it was hidden. He ran with his backpack to another classroom after the gun went off, reports say.

The shooting might be an accident, Police Capt. Bill Hayes told the AP. However, authorities say that the suspect could be charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

We’re glad that this was all just an accident as opposed to a deliberate shooting, but we are troubled as to how a student can still just walk into a school with a weapon. In this day and age we have to do a better job protecting our children as they attempt to get an education.

What would you think about mandatory safety screening at schools across the country??
