The Old Man Loses Again

Posted by Bossip Staff

The albino bonobo, John McCain, got his ass beat up again in the debate last night:

Fifty-four percent of those questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey conducted after the debate ended said that Obama did the best job in the debate, with 30 percent saying Sen. John McCain performed better.

According to the poll, 64 percent had a favorable opinion of Obama after the debate, up 4 points from before the event. Fifty-one percent of those polled had a favorable opinion of McCain after the debate, unchanged from before its start.

A majority said Obama seemed to be the stronger leader during the debate, 54 percent to 43 percent, and by a more than 2-to-1 ratio — 65 percent to 28 percent — viewers thought Obama was more likable during the debate.

YES WE CAN!!!

And yall call this a debate?

The the “debate” was weak once again, and I am disappointed that they do not discuss domestic issues that really matter (besides health care). This “debate” was just like the first one that lacked emotions and aggressiveness from each party. If you dont know what Im talking about, look at debates from 30-40 years ago. By the way, the questions asked do not even scratch the surface of the what domestic issues America trully faces.

Screw the polls the people they mean nothing.. People should not follow the polls at all unless they know how many people did the survey and in which part of the country. Other than that they are meaningless and used as a tool to shape the perceptions of the public.

I promised to dissect the whole interview yesterday but it would be meaningless because this “debate” covered the same ***** as the last “debate” did.

I saw that too and I was like where the hell is John. Barack was taking pictures and signing autographs and whatnot. I was very, very impressed. Michelle looked so AWWWW adorable. But really she was very professional and very First Lady-ish. So proud of them even though I was still bored with the debate.

  36. Yeah he got one foot in the grave….McCain that is

  37. WhatsYoursIsMine

And did anyone notice how Cindy McCain just looked distressed during most of the debate, whereas Michelle appeared to be taking it all in and smiling. It was even evident in their supporters, Megan McCain smiled more than her mom, but she too looked distraught. Claire McCaskill mirrored Michelle: she was also thinking, and also smiling.

AP: McCain Linked to Iran-Contra, ‘***** Collaborators,’ and ‘Right-Wing Death Squads’

    Kyle Drennen

    News Busters

    October 7, 2008

On Tuesday, an *****ociated Press article featured on MSNBC.com and briefly as a top headline on the popular internet homepage MSN.com was titled: “McCain linked to group in Iran-Contra case.” The subtitle read: “Organization had ties to former ***** collaborators, right-wing death squads.” The article attacked a group founded by retired U.S. General John Singlaub: “The U.S. Council for World Freedom was part of an international organization linked to former ***** collaborators and ultra-right-wing death squads in Central America. The group was dedicated to stamping out communism around the globe.”

The AP appears to be getting its story tips from the Obama campaign, as Boston Globe deputy national political editor, Foon Rhee, reported: “The Obama camp today is sending around reports on Singlaub, founder of the US Council for World Freedom, which was involved in the Iran-Contra scandal during the mid-1980s and was criticized for supposed links to ***** collaborators and right-wing death squads in Central America.” The AP article justified reporting on the tenuous McCain connection by explaining: “McCain’s ties are facing renewed scrutiny after his campaign criticized Barack Obama for his link to a former radical who engaged in violent acts 40 years ago.”

In the article, General Singlaub is quoted and suggested that McCain had little or no involvement in the organization: “We had McCain on the board to make him feel like he wasn’t left out. It looks good to have names on a letterhead who are well-known and appreciated. I don’t recall talking to McCain at all on the work of the group.” Despite that explanation, the AP still thought it appropriate to suggest an equivalence between McCain’s ties to such an organization and Obama’s ties to domestic terrorist Bill Ayers: “The renewed attention over McCain’s *****ociation with Singlaub’s group comes as McCain’s campaign steps up criticism of Obama’s dealings with William Ayers, a college professor who co-founded the Weather Underground and years later worked on education reform in Chicago alongside Obama.”

I think I’ve been so appalled so much during this campaign that I can’t even react to stuff like this anymore. . .

    From The Huffington Post:

For the second time in three days, the speaker at a McCain campaign rally used Barack Obama’s middle name “Hussein” in a demeaning fashion to ignite the crowd.

Speaking in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Bill Platt, the GOP chair of Lehigh County, twice referred to “Barack Hussein Obama” minutes before John McCain and Sarah Palin were set to take the stage.

On Monday, a local Florida sheriff preceded Palin’s speech by declaring: “On Nov. 4, let’s leave Barack Hussein Obama wondering what happened.”

**********McCain Touts His Own Ayers Connection*************

McCain Trumpets Endorsement From Figure Of Foundation That Established Ayers Board

    October 8, 2008 11:55 AM

    www(dot)huffingtonpost(dot)com/2008/10/08/mccains-trumpets-endorsem_n_132954(dot)html

On Wednesday morning, John McCain’s campaign released a list of 100 former amb*****adors endorsing the GOP presidential nominee.

Second on the list, though her name is misspelled, is Leonore Annenberg, currently the president and chairman of the Annenberg Foundation and widow of amb*****ador and philanthropist Walter Annenberg. Ms. Annenberg was herself the “chief of protocol” at the State Department under President Reagan.

If the last name sounds familiar, it’s because it also graces the name of the Chicago education board where Barack Obama and William Ayers sat in the room six times together.

In recent days, the McCain-Palin ticket (and particularly Palin) has faulted Obama for having served on that board with Ayers, who was a founding member of the radical 60’s Weather Underground group when Obama was in grade school.

Since then, however, Ayers has been rehabilitated in Chicago society, carving out a niche in education circles. As a former Republican representative in Illinois told NPR on Monday, smearing Obama for his board *****ociation with Ayers is “nonsensical.”

“It was never a concern by any of us in the Chicago school reform movement that he had led a fugitive life years earlier … It’s ridiculous,” Republican Rep. Diana Nelson said. “There is no reason at all to smear Barack Obama with this *****ociation. It’s nonsensical, and it just makes me crazy. It’s so silly.”

And while it might be equally silly to accuse one of McCain’s latest surrogates for managing the national foundation that provided nearly $50 million to the board that included Obama and Ayers, it seems like a question the McCain camp might have to engage anyway if it wants to keep flagging the issue.

Separate calls to the Pennsylvania and California offices of the Annenberg Foundation were not immediately returned Wendesday morning.

LOL

The campaign took a nasty turn when Palin drudged up all that old BS about Ayers…she need not throw stones from a gl***** house! She supported Alaska’s succession from the US…and the leader of that organization has gone on record stating that he “hates America.” Now since we’re discussing “*****ociations,” is she also guilty by “*****ociation?” Yet this fact is not being discussed in the media. I am tired of the Ayers BS!!!

Don’t even get me started on how bad McCain’s body language was last night. His disdain for Obama is clear, so I can’t wait until he gets served on Nov 4th!!

U.S. Army Troops To Serve As U.S. Policemen?

    Chuck Baldwin

    October 6, 2008

According to the Army Times (dated Tuesday, September 30, 2008), “Beginning Oct. 1 for 12 months, the 1st BCT [Brigade Combat Team] will be under the day-to-day control of U.S. Army North, the Army service component of Northern Command, as an on-call federal response force for natural or manmade emergencies and disasters, including terrorist attacks.”

The article continued by saying, “But this new mission marks the first time an active unit has been given a dedicated *****ignment to NorthCom, a joint command established in 2002 to provide command and control for federal homeland defense efforts and coordinate defense support of civil authorities.

“After 1st BCT finishes its dwell-time mission, expectations are that another, as yet unnamed, active-duty brigade will take over and that the mission will be a permanent one.”

The Times column also reported that the Army brigade “may be called upon to help with civil unrest and crowd control . . .” It seems that the Army’s new domestic duties also include “traffic control” as well as subduing “unruly or dangerous individuals.”

The brigade will be known for the next year as a Consequence Management Response Force, or CCMRF (*****ounced “sea-smurf”).

I am *****uming that the planners and promoters of this newfound function for the Army brigade envision the Army *****isting local first responders in dealing with natural emergencies such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and the like. Good intentions notwithstanding, to *****ign domestic police duties to the U.S. military is extremely disturbing.

To understand my concern for this new “homeland Army brigade,” it is important that we rehe***** the principles of liberty as they relate to standing armies.

One of America’s most sacred principles has always been that the U.S. military was never to be used for domestic law enforcement. The fear of standing armies ran very deep in the hearts and minds of America’s founders. The tyranny and misery inflicted upon the colonies by British troops weighed heavily upon those who drafted our Constitution and Bill of Rights. In their minds, the American people would never again be subjected to the heavy weight of army boots. Furthermore, they insisted that America would have a civilian–not military–government.

And after the fiasco of the abuse of federal troops in the South following the War Between the States, the doctrine of Posse Comitatus was enacted into law. The Wikipedia online encyclopedia says this about Posse Comitatus:

“The Act prohibits most members of the federal uniformed services … from exercising nominally state law enforcement police or peace officer powers that maintain ‘law and order’ on non-federal property. . . .

“The statute generally prohibits federal military personnel and units of the United States National Guard under federal authority from acting in a law enforcement capacity within the United States, except where expressly authorized by the Constitution or Congress. . . .

“The Posse Comitatus Act and the Insurrection Act substantially limit the powers of the federal government to use the military for law enforcement.”

The Posse Comitatus Act was p*****ed in 1878 and was universally accepted as being a very just–and extremely important–law of the land.

But in 2006, President George W. Bush pushed a Republican-controlled Congress to p***** the John Warner National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2007, which included a section titled “Use of the Armed Forces in major public emergencies.” This section provided that “The President may employ the armed forces to restore public order in any State of the United States the President determines….” In effect, this bill obliterated Posse Comitatus.

When the Democrat-controlled Congress p*****ed the 2008 National Defense Authorization Act, however, the restrictions of Posse Comitatus were restored. But when President Bush signed the Act into law, he attached a signing statement (Executive Order) indicating that the Executive Branch did not feel bound by the changes enacted by the repeal. Translated: President Bush wiped out Posse Comitatus by Executive Order.

Now, just a few months after expunging Posse Comitatus, President Bush has authorized an Army brigade to be *****igned the new role of dealing exclusively with domestic law enforcement and related duties. This evokes serious questions.

Who will give the order to send U.S. troops against American civilians, and under what cir*****stances? What will the rules of engagement be? How will “unruly” and “dangerous” be defined? How will soldiers be asked to deal with “crowd” or “traffic” control? And perhaps the biggest question is, Once we begin to go down this road, where will it lead?

For several years, the federal government has been ac*****ulating to itself more and more authority that was historically understood to reside within the states and local communities. More and more, our police departments have taken on the image and tactics of the armed forces. And to a greater and greater degree, the rights and liberties of the American people are being sacrificed on the altar of “national security.” It seems to me that to now ascribe law enforcement duties to the U.S. Army only serves to augment the argument that America is fast approaching police state status.

If Hurricane Katrina is the template that our federal government is using as a model for future events, Heaven help us! Do readers remember how National Guard troops were used to confiscate the personal firearms of isolated and vulnerable civilians shortly after that hurricane devastated the New Orleans area? Do you remember how representatives of the federal government were calling upon pastors and ministers to act as spokesmen for gun confiscation? Is this what the new Army brigade is preparing for? And do President Bush and his military planners envision an even broader role for military troops on American soil?

Add to the above rumors of thousands of plastic caskets–along with thousands of portable prison cells–being shipped and stored across the country, and one is left to ask, Exactly what is it that our federal government is planning?

I think there is an even bigger question, What exactly will members of our armed forces do if and when they are commanded to seize Americans’ firearms, arrest them at gun point, or even fire upon them? How many soldiers and Marines love liberty and constitutional government enough to resist such orders, should they be given? And how many officers would resist issuing such orders?

Remember, it is the job of the armed forces to kill people and blow up things, not to do police work. Then again, Presidential administrations from both major parties have been using the U.S. military as U.N. “peacekeepers” for decades now. So, was all of this preparation for what is yet to take place in the United States?

God forbid that any of the above should actually take place in our beloved land, but I believe it would be naïve to not see that the actions and attitudes of the federal government over the past several years do nothing to *****uage such fears.

Homeschooling Banned in California as State Turns Parents Into Criminals for Teaching Their Own Children

    David Gutierrez

    Natural News

    September 23, 2008

A California appeals court has ruled that homeschooling of children is illegal unless their parents have teaching credentials from the state.

“California is now on the path to being the only state to deny the vast majority of homeschooling parents their fundamental right to teach their own children at home,” said Michael Smith, president of the Home School Legal Defense *****ociation.

The court overturned a lower court’s finding that homeschooling did not constitute a violation of child welfare laws.

“California courts have held that … parents do not have a constitutional right to homeschool their children,” Justice H. Walter Croskey said.

The decision stunned parents of the state’s roughly 166,000 homeschooled children. While the court claimed that it was merely clarifying an existing law and not making a new one, the decision leaves the parents of homeschooled children at risk of arrest and criminal prosecution.

“At first, there was a sense of, ‘No way,’ ” homeschool parent Loren Mavromati said. “Then there was a little bit of fear. I think it has moved now into indignation.”

Parents’ reasons for homeschooling their children range from religious beliefs to dissatisfaction with the education received at public or private schools. But according to the court, all California children between the ages of 6 and 18 must attend either a full-time public or private school or be taught by a tutor credentialed for their specific grade level.

“A primary purpose of the educational system is to train school children in good citizenship, patriotism and loyalty to the state and the nation,” Croskey wrote.

California’s largest teachers union welcomed the decision as did the Children’s Law Center of Los Angeles.

According to the law center’s executive director, Leslie Heimov, children should not be educated at home, because they need to be “in a place daily where they would be observed by people who had a duty to ensure their ongoing safety.”

And has anyone seen the online videos of the Palin and McCain rallies where people are calling Obama a “terrorist”? The one that irks me is where the guy shouts “kill him”. Too bad you can’t see the offender’s face.

I truly do not want to see anything happen to either candidate, but McCain’s campaign has gone too far.

Barak Obama proved last night that he has what it takes to be president. He was cool and collected, he actually seemed interested in people in the audience. Notice how every ran to get their pictures taken with him.

The Conservative Republicans think it’s their God-given right to be in control of everything including your day-to-day life. I am sick of the GOP with this fear mongering and nasty attacks. Saying Obama is palling around with terrorists is down right low and dangerous. You basically are accusing him of committing a major crime against this country, which couldn’t be further from the truth. If I was a Republican, I would be angry with my own party. This is not how so-called Christians behave.

Obama is doing everything correctly by taking the high road. In the end, he will survive with his integrity in tact and he will have the full support of all Americans, which is exactly what we need right now.

(CNN) – The New York Times issued a renewed scolding of John McCain in a sharply-worded editorial Wednesday morning, the latest salvo in the ongoing back-and-forth between the paper of record and the Arizona senator’s White House bid.

“Senator John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin have been running one of the most appalling campaigns we can remember,” the Tuesday editorial said. “They have gone far beyond the usual fare of quotes taken out of context and distortions of an opponent’s record — into the dark territory of race-baiting and xenophobia. Senator Barack Obama has taken some cheap shots at Mr. McCain, but there is no comparison.”

Those comments come two weeks after senior McCain advisors derided the New York Times, calling the news outlet “an Obama advocacy organization” in response to an article in the paper that reported McCain campaign manager Rick Davis was still profiting from failed mortgage giant Freddie Mac.

The Times, McCain spokesman Michael Goldfarb said then, “obscures its true intentions — to undermine the candidacy of John McCain and boost the candidacy of Barack Obama — under the cloak of objective journalism.”

Top McCain adviser Steve Schmidt also weighed in on the paper that endorsed McCain’s primary bid, saying it is “150 percent in the tank” for Obama — a statement that drew a defiant response from managing editor Bill Keller, who said the paper is “is committed to covering the candidates fully, fairly and aggressively.”

The McCain campaign appeared to make its peace with the paper over the weekend, when aides to the Arizona senator and Palin herself both highlighted a Times story that investigated the relationship between Obama and 1960’s radical William Ayers. That article, published October 3, concluded Obama has played down the extent of his relationship with the Weather Underground founder, but concludes the two “do not appear to have been close.”

But in its blistering editorial Wednesday, the paper’s editors criticized the campaign and the Alaska governor for suggesting Obama is “palling around with terrorists,” saying that Palin is implying that “Mr. Obama is right now a close friend of Mr. Ayers — and sympathetic to the violent overthrow of the government.”

“We certainly expected better from Mr. McCain, who once showed withering contempt for win-at-any-cost politics,” the editorial says.

GLENDALE — A motorcyclist was killed this morning along a major freeway connector road in a possible gang-related shooting, authorities said.

A group of motorcyclists were traveling along the connector road linking the eastbound Foothill (210) Freeway to the southbound Glendale (2) Freeway around 2 a.m. when the man was shot, said Sgt. Tom Lorenz of the Glendale Police Department.

Firefighters and California Highway Patrol officers at the scene discovered the motorcycle in bushes alongside the road and its deceased rider nearby.

Lorenz said the victim is *****ociated with the Mongols Motorcycle Club — a motorcycle gang founded in Montebello in the 1970s.

“We don’t know if, in fact, the gang affiliation has anything to do with the situation,” Lorenz said.

Other members who were riding with the victim at the time of the shooting were cooperating with police.

Police said they know the victim’s identity, however, they were not releasing that information at this time.

The connector roads linking the 210 and 2 freeways were shut down for much of the morning commute, along with the Foothill Boulevard onramp to the southbound 2, causing traffic backlog on Verdugo Boulevard.

The roads were expected to reopen once the coroner’s office, which arrived around 9:30 a.m., removed the victim’s body.

The northbound 2 Freeway was closed at Mountain Street until 5:30 a.m., when the lanes were reopened, said CHP Officer Anthony Martin.

    No arrests have been reported.

LONG BEACH — A Long Beach woman accused of driving her teenage son and his friends to confront a rival gang has been convicted of second degree murder.

Eva Daley was charged with first-degree murder but the jury opted for the lesser conviction after deliberating for more than two days.

The 31-year old mother of three faces 15 years to life in prison when she is sentenced Nov. 4.

Daley was convicted in the murder of 13-year old Jose “Bobby” Cano, who was stabbed to death in June 2007 near a Long Beach skate park.

According to prosecutors, Daley helped plot a hit on Cano, drove the boys to the park to carry out the attack and help them flee.

Daley’s co-defendant Herbierto Garcia – the 17-year-old accused of stabbing the victim – was also convicted of second degree murder.

Prosecutors say the victim was targeted because their gang, the Latin Thugs or LT, had disrespected Daley and her son, a member of Los Marijuana Smokers, or LMS, earlier that day.

Daley’s son, Mauricio Rivera, and four other youths pleaded guilty to manslaughter and were sentenced as juveniles.

John McCain uttered two words that could turn out to be the only ones people remember from Tuesday night’s presidential debate: That one.

But what those words meant is being spun in many different ways.

Halfway through the town-hall-style debate, McCain, discussing a bill before the Senate in 2005, said:

“There was an energy bill on the floor of the Senate loaded down with goodies, billions for the oil companies, and it was sponsored by Bush and Cheney,”he said, turning the tables on the Obama camp’s continuous attempts to link the Republican candidate to the unpopular president and vice president.

“You know who voted for it? You might never know. That one,” he said, pointing to Obama, who was sitting on a stool several feet away. “You know who voted against it? Me.”

Click here to see video of the exchange.

The GOP candidate’s dismissive manner in saying that one generated much talk afterward about what McCain meant.

For some, it was nothing more than McCain pointing at his opponent and saying that Obama was the one who voted with Bush.

But for others, the expression represented something sinister: a suggestion that that one — Obama — is not like the rest.

That undertone wasn’t lost on critics who have watched the McCain campaign attack Obama’s *****ociates and relationships, including the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Weather Underground founder Bill Ayers, rather than his policies in the last week.

One group, the Center for Social Inclusion — a nonpartisan organization funded in part by the Ford Foundation — claims the phrase was racially charged.

“The racial undertones were subtle but unmistakable,” CSI Director Maya Wiley said in a statement released Wednesday.

“By making a dismissive, condescending remark like this, McCain was tapping into a current of superiority among white voters. It was an attempt to ‘otherize’ Obama and tap into the implicit bias that so many of us hold,â€ Wiley said.

“To my knowledge, I have never heard that used as a common phrase before,”said University of California-Berkeley linguistics professor George Lakoff.

“The phrase was meant to say, ‘You and I are in the same area, but he’s the outsider,’” Lakoff continued. “It’s the political equivalent of what (Sarah) Palin said the other day, which is, ‘He’s not one of us.’”

That one may also be the raging yang to a yin offered by the McCain campaign over the summer, when, in an ad, it compared Obama to Moses and mockingly suggested that the Democrat was “The One”who is hoping to achieve a messianic image and celebrity status.

University of Richmond Director of Debate Kevin Kuswa said that one probably grabbed the collective conscience because it was one of the very few “unfamiliar lines from the debate.”

Kuswa said that because of the town-hall format, the candidates were merely repeating their talking points.

“If these were more direct debates — in which candidates can ask each other questions directly — we would have more content material in our brains the next day,” he said.

“Any thing that stands out becomes magnified and more significant as people’s attention spans become shorter,”he said.

Kuswa added that individuals have homed in on the phrase because they can seize no other “defining gaffe” or “moment of total awkwardness in the presidential debates thus far.”

Whatever the intent, the description had caught on Wednesday among both Republicans and Democrats. Almost immediately after the debate, pro-Obama Web sites sprang up proudly describing Obama as “That One.”

The Republican National Committee also tried to have a little fun with the comment, calling that one the “most memorable line” of the debate and saying it plans to make use of the phrase in the coming days.

Obama campaign aides called the phrase “odd” and said it depicted the Arizona senator as “angry.” One aide characterized the phrase as McCain’s “get off my lawn moment.”

“It reminds you that McCain is sort of angry and agitated. He looked uncomfortable,” said Obama Communications Director Robert Gibbs.”I guess the pillow seat wasn’t soft enough. He stood and walked around.”

Senior adviser David Axelrod said the phrase suggests McCain is “a little bit irascible, a little bit peevish.”

“Last time we had the debate, Senator McCain didn’t want to look at Senator Obama, and he made this reference today,” Axelrod said after the debate.

A McCain campaign aide said she doesn’t know what the hullabaloo is about over McCain’s use of the phrase. The candidate has often singled out Obama that way.

“I’m shocked that at a moment of national crisis, where our economy is on the minds of every single person, I am shocked that they are again proving to be the fussiest campaign in American history, McCain adviser Nicole Wallace told reporters after the debate.

In an interview on ABC’s Good Morning America on Wednesday, Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden dismissed questions about the implication of singling out Obama as that one.

“I think when John knows he’s sort of in attack mode, it’s always kind of difficult to look the other person in the eye and say, ‘It’s you, John, it’s you, Barack, it’s you, Harry,’” Biden said, noting that McCain’s camp has gone on defense. “I think it reflects his more — he’s ill at ease with the attack he has under way.”

Kuswa said he suspects McCain most likely meant to use the expression in a non-hurtful way.

“I’m not sure I would consider it a gaffe. It might have been a slip,” Kuswa said.

“It struck me during the debate as unexpected. I don’t think McCain intended to be disrespectful, but it certainly sounded dismissive at the least — and if we’re concerned about how each candidate is referencing each other, I think saying that one is certainly below using one’s first name in terms of respect,” he said.

I also want to share a link for video of Donna Brazile at a political panel discussion over the weekend. It’s posted on the New Yorker’s site, www(dot)newyorker(dot)com:

But any uneasiness Brazile may have been feeling on the issue of race has clearly evaporated. Asked for some closing thoughts after the wide-ranging discussion, Brazile paused, then dove in:

“I’m gonna say it and get it off my chest, because for the next thirty days, I’m gonna be the best Catholic woman ever….As a child who grew up in the segregated Deep South, we’ve come so far in this country….But I remember when I used to get on the bus: my mother would tell me, “Donna, when you get on the bus, you and your brothers go all the way to the back, and don’t look at anybody.” We have changed. This is a more tolerant, open, progressive society. And yet, we’re having this conversation because [Obama] is biracial. He spent nine months in the womb of a white woman. He was raised…by his white grandparents…He got out of school and went to Harvard, and all of a sudden he’s “uppity” and there’s something wrong with him? What is wrong with us?…You can vote against him, but don’t ever put me in the back of the bus. I’m not going to the back of the bus! I’m not going to be afraid! My black skin does not make me inferior! And may I add: being a female does not make me dumb!”

Over rollicking applause, Brazile closed her mini-sermon:

“Don’t let people trick you, and distract you and divide you…Don’t let no one take us back! Because many of us are not going back—we’re going forward! And come with us!”

I liked how McCain gave examples of working with both parties unlike Obama who has only worked with Democrats. I also noticed that McCain seemed to connect more with the people in the audiecne by calling them by their first name, looking them in the eyes, and talking to audience instead of the camera like Obama was doing. I only wish that Obama would have had more town halls with McCain Obama said he would have them but then changed his mind). I think that this was one of McCain’s greatest debates.

It was such a great debate for McCain that he lost it in all the polls I’ve read, including among undecided voters.

McCain connected so much with the audience members that he quickly left after the debate, leaving Barack and Michelle to meet and greet the parti*****nts by themselves, a fact that was noted by pundits. Tom Brokaw on MSNBC this morning said that he turned around and McCain was gone.

Obama has an established record of bipartisan leadership. . .Oh, what the heck, this is tiring. . .*sigh*

What about McCain serving and working alongside people with virulent bigoted pasts like Sens. Jesse Helms, Strom Thurmond and Robert Byrd? these individuals committed specific acts against African-Americans during Jim Crow? No. But we do know that their hateful words, and willingness to uphold laws that were absolutely anti-American, did not represent the best of this nation.

It’s interesting to see that he is another child of priviledge who wants to rule the world. while he family may not have had Bush/Kennedy money, he’s always had connections to fall back on. He’s truly a repeat of the failed Bush family.

    I meant Policies.

Obama’s most famous bipartisan act has been his co-sponsorship of the Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act of 2006. This act was originated (or introduced, I never get the terminology right) by Republican Senator Tom Coburn, and is often referred to as the Coburn-Obamam Transparency Act.

Other senators who sponsored this bill are Democrat Tom Carper (Caper?) and Republican Senator, and presidential nominee, John McCain.

You are right, he does have one of the highest Democratic voting records in the Senate, but keep in mind, he’s only been in there 3 years. The same people who bring up his Democrat record are the same people who have to give him props for introducing and sponsoring a great deal of pertinent legislation, just not “dummy bills and propositions” to get his name on the rolls.

I don’t know every piece of legislation he’s done, but I have seen people from both sides of th eaisle commend his short record for being aggressive.

  176. Rozza♥

@Selena: Of course he has high marks with Democrats. But he has earned the respect of many Republicans becuase of his willingness to work across party lines and support common causes.

And for those who think the Republicans are the only ones pro-military – a non-partisan veteran’s group gave Obama a grade of B for his support of veterans and their issues, especially the medical and mental health care they should have coming home. And he made sure to try to be there for most of the votes. McCain – a grade of D.

From the New York Daily News:

“…But it only gets worse when one looks at McCain’s voting record. The nation’s largest Iraq veterans organization, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, a nonpartisan organization, grades members of Congress on how they vote on legislation that “affect[s] troops, veterans or military families.” This includes votes on such issues as expanded health care services for veterans and reservists, military death benefits, traumatic brain injury research and adequate rest for service members between deployments, just to name a few.

Of the 155 votes tracked by IAVA since 9/11, John McCain received a grade of “D.” While no senator earned a grade of “A,” Barack Obama got a “B .”

A separate veterans group, Disabled American Veterans – with over 1.4 million members – maintains a “Federal Vote Scorecard.” DAV is also a nonpartisan organization and says the purpose of its scorecard is “simply to report the facts – how [legislators] voted on issues important to us and our members.”

McCain’s score in the last Congress? 20%. Obama’s? 80%. (In the previous two Congresses, McCain’s record goes a little bit higher – to 25% and 33%, respectively; Obama’s is 92% for 2006; in 2004 he was not yet elected to the Senate.)”

Thank you for responding and giving good answers. However, you also mentioned that Obama has been in the Senate for only 3 years (state senate for 8) and this is my main concern with him. I am not saying that Obama will be a bad president. The main reasons why I am not voting for him is because he has not been in public office that long and I believe that he needs more time.

  180. Selena.

I have done research on Senator Barack Obama. It is true that he has a record of bipartisaship-but you will not hear about that from Senator John McCain, because is his not supposed to expound on the excellent points of why Obama truly deserves to be placed in the White House-after all, McCa9in wants to reach the white himself, right?

Anyway, I recommend that you Go directly to Barack’s website. I am sure you know the address.

I hope it is not an issue for fellow Obama supporters, such as I, to educate Miss Selena on why he won this debate, the other, and why he should (and will) be the next Comander in Chief.

    :)

  181. trs

    @ Rozza

You’re right on…they have both increased…unless you were already rich or affliated with big oil when Bush came into office. Notably, if you fell into one of those categories you got huge tax breaks and probably didn’t notice an increase in the cost of living because it didn’t affect you! ;)

  182. Sydney

Hey everyone, I was in another thread.

    @Selena

You’re referring to my second post? It’s from yesterday’s Dana Milbank column in The Washington Post, www(dot)washingtonpost(dot)com. Excerpt below:

Barack Obama, she told 8,000 fans at a rally here Monday afternoon, “launched his political career in the living room of a domestic terrorist!” This followed her earlier accusation that the Democrat pals around with terrorists. “This is not a man who sees America the way you and I see America,” she told the Clearwater crowd. “I’m afraid this is someone who sees America as imperfect enough to work with a former domestic terrorist who had targeted his own country.” The crowd replied with boos.

McCain had said that racially explosive attacks related to Obama’s former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, are off limits. But Palin told New York Times columnist Bill Kristol in an interview published Monday: “I don’t know why that *****ociation isn’t discussed more.”

Worse, Palin’s routine attacks on the media have begun to spill into ugliness. In Clearwater, arriving reporters were greeted with shouts and taunts by the crowd of about 3,000. Palin then went on to blame Katie Couric’s questions for her “less-than-successful interview with kinda mainstream media.” At that, Palin supporters turned on reporters in the press area, waving thunder sticks and shouting abuse. Others hurled obscenities at a camera crew. One Palin supporter shouted a racial epithet at an African American sound man for a network and told him, “Sit down, boy.”

  183. Afiya

I was just thinking…when Obama wins November 4th…the theme song should be:

“WE TAKEN OVER, WE TAKEN OVER!!”

I don’t know who sings that…but it would be appropriate.

    ;)

  184. Sydney

    More from Dana Milbank:

The reception had been better in Clearwater, where Palin, speaking to a sea of “Palin Power” and “Sarahcuda” T-shirts, tried to link Obama to the 1960s Weather Underground. “One of his earliest supporters is a man named Bill Ayers,” she said. (“Boooo!” said the crowd.) “And, according to the New York Times, he was a domestic terrorist and part of a group that, quote, ‘launched a campaign of bombings that would target the Pentagon and our U.S. Capitol,’ ” she continued. (“Boooo!” the crowd repeated.)

“Kill him!” proposed one man in the audience.

Palin also told those gathered that Obama doesn’t like American soldiers. “He said that our troops in Afghanistan are just, quote, ‘air-raiding villages and killing civilians,’ ” she said, drawing boos from a crowd that had not been told Obama was actually appealing for more troops in Afghanistan.

  188. The real bipartisan

Email|Link|Comments (7) Posted by Lisa *****sness, Political Reporter September 25, 2008 12:24 PM

If you were wondering who the real bipartisan leader was in the struggle between John McCain and Barack Obama to look presidential on the financial crisis, Joe Biden can tell you.

Speaking at a high school in Greensburg, Pa. this morning, Biden said nothing about McCain’s call to postpone the debate, a move that caught the Obama campaign off-guard yesterday. Instead he emphasized Obama’s phone call to McCain yesterday morning to see if they could come out with a joint statement on what the bailout legislation should contain.

“In the midst of all this political blather that’s going on, all the negative ads being heaped upon him, what did he do?” Biden said. “He reached out, he picked up the phone and he called John MCCain. And he said we should …see if we can agree jointly … on the basic elements of what needs to be in this package, this rescue package, so that not only Wall Street doesn’t fail, but Main Street doesn’t get crushed in the avalanche when it falls.

“He showed leadership. He showed leadership by suggesting that we come together. But ladies and gentlemen, he also thinks it’s important that we know why we got here how we got here so it will not happen again. Ladies and gentlement, we are in a postion now where in a closely contested presidential election, Barack Obama stepped up to say, ‘John, this is too important.’ That’s how you change the tone in Washington. That’s really leadership.”

Blair Latoff, spokesman for the Republican National Committee, responds: “In times of crisis, Americans have always been able to bridge our divides and solve our problems but apparently Barack Obama’s running mate sees it as an opportunity for unfiltered partisanship and political opportunism. John McCain suspended his campaign and is working with the nation’s leaders to address this serious economic crisis and believes that it is more important to put his country before his political campaign.”

    *****************************************************************************************************

Viewers reactions on CNN was more postive toward Obama than McCain in light of the fact that Obama actually cares about the plight of middle cl***** and working poor. Ask yourself why so many americans-Democrats, some Republicans, and Independents tend to response better to Obama than to McCain on economic issues.

  189. Rozza♥

    @Leroy:

Keating Five (direct, not peripheral involvement)

Part of the Reagan era, home of Ollie North, Iran-Contra, the funding of bin Laden and the Mujahadeen against the Russians.

Cohort of Saddam Hussein until the late ’80s, due to the fact that Iraq was an enemy of Iran (still is)

Thinks Hussein g*****ing his own people horrible! It happened in the late ’80’s, however only showed outrage when Bush pushed the “Invade Iraq” agenda

Admitted in his own book that he wasn’t as brave as everyone thinks while a POW – gave info for medical treatment while a POW

Upon release, returned to the States, dumped his wife who was disfigured in a horrifying accident. Then promptly married socialite Cindy, who is an heir to the Budweiser fortune.

Just goes to show Leroy, those who wear white suits should not sling mud.

Obama isn’t perfect, but stay on the issues, tell us what we need to know because we are on a scary treacherous path. McCain’s campaign is bringing out the worst in folks, and his silence against the horrendous behavior only makes it seem that he is endorsing it and hoping it turns the tide for him. He is fear-mongering and it needs to stop.

Now Cindy McCain is getting in the fray, and attacking Obama, saying “He is running the dirtiest campaign she has ever seen.” Really!?!?!? She must be sleeping in a separate room or house from her husband. McCain is using Rove-style dirty tactics, and is behaving in a mean condescending manner toward Obama, not like an elder statesman should be behaving. Anyone can see this.

I see so much hate and venom spewing from conservative pundits and news organizations, and rather than concentrating on issues, even McCain’s own campaign people said to turn the page on “this economic thing” and start attacking Obama’s character.

    Hey Rozza!

    Just came across from Politico(dot)com:

Conservative pundits and bloggers expressed outrage Wednesday over John McCain’s plan for the federal government to spend $300 billion to buy up troubled mortgages, announced during his debate with Barack Obama Tuesday night.

“Last night, he took that position on the housing issue of buying up everybody’s mortgage,” former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said on Fox News. “Conservatives are scratching their heads today and saying, ‘What happened?’”

“What on earth is that about?” Huckabee asked. “Then you got to ask, which houses? The condos in southern Florida, where people bought $500,000 homes as a second home and now can’t pay for them? Are we buying those, too?”

Conservative columnist and blogger Michelle Malkin couldn’t hold back her disdain for the proposal.

“I can’t underscore enough what a rotten idea John McCain’s ACORN-like government mortgage buy-up is,” Malkin wrote on her blog, referring to the controversial *****ociation of Community Organizations for Reform Now, a group reviled by conservatives for its support of liberal ideals and alleged corruption. “Will he propose a similar plan for those who bought mutual funds at or near the market top?”

“Folks, forget about all this policy wonkery,” National Review’s Andy McCarthy advised in the magazine’s online blog, The Corner. “McCain’s policies have driven us crazy for years.”

Girl Parker ripped McCain/Palin a new one in that article!!! Too bad they won’t take one of their own’s advice and cut the bs—they need to stick to the issues. They know that their days are numbered…and that’s why they’re intentionally misleading the American people who don’t know any better. It’s the only way that they have a shot at winning.

You stated in your original post that John McCain is the one saying these rasist thing against Obama. According to the Washington post article that yous sent (and I read). It is not McCain who is doing these things but some of his supporters. McCain cannot control what people say or believe (even if some of them are rasist and ignorant). When I was supporting Hillary in the primaries, I was called rasist, a c@nt, and bytch by Obama supporter. Some of them even vandalized my Hillary 08 sign by spray painting B@tch on it. At that point, Parker flipped it up and said that Palin was “out of her league.” She then encouraged Palin to drop out of the race in an op ed that was published in the Post.

Recently, she published an editorial encouraging the McCain campaign to stop misleading voters by insinuating that he is a Muslim and in league with terrorists.

She stated: “The McCain campaign knows that Obama isn’t a Muslim or a terrorist, but they’re willing to help a certain kind of voter think he is. Just the way certain South Carolinians in 2000 were allowed to think that McCain’s adopted daughter from Bangladesh was his illegitimate black child.”

She went on to say that McCain needs “call off his pit bull before this war escalates.”

This was another gem from her article:

“When racial epithets, death threats and charges of treason are flung daily at McCain/Palin rallies — and neither candidate lifts a finger to stop it — we have entered a very frightening and disappointing moment in our nation’s history.”

    @Selena

To continue my post, there’s a clear distinction between Obama and McCain’s approach to “rowdy” supporters. Obama has condemned any remarks from his supporters — such as the staffer who called Hillary a “monster” — that could be construed as offensive. He has done this throughout the campaign, and even said he would fire any member of his staff whom he found distributing derogatory statements about a member of Palin’s family when she was first introduced to the race.

McCain, and, more specifically, Palin, this weekend embarked on a movement to tear apart Obama’s character, even resorting to the spread of untruths and mischaracterizations that cast him in the most negative light imaginable. By allowing announcers to emphasize his middle name, linking his name with “terrorists,” and arousing doubts about his patriotism, they have painted a picture of him that has stoked anger and hatred among some of their supporters. And, when it has been brought to their attention, guess what, they have only continued it.

When people yell racial slurs, “Kill him,” and “terrorist” at your rallies, a line of decency has been crossed — one that could possibly impact the safety of the a black man whom some already view as “Other.”

    TRS,

My mind has been made just as yours and many others are made. It also doesn’t say anywhere on this post that I cannot comment just because I support someone else. I am the type of person who talks with all types of people regardless of political affiliation, race, sex etc.

    I’m out

Um, no, the opinion is not just mine. I’m sure you’ve read Kathleen Parker’s commentary today, which trs referenced, as well as the NY Times editorial, which also denounced these latest campaign tactics, and I have some other “opinions” to share with you as well, if you like.

I just wanted to see where you were coming from with the back and forth because as you know, there is a difference between conversing and debating. At least you aren’t hurling racial epithets and spewing untruths like many McCain supporters do so I can respect you for that. You’re casting your vote for McCain, and we are casting ours for Obama.

    Do you.

  220. Ahem.

Now Governor Sarah Palin has accused Senator Barack Obama for ‘palling around with terrorists’.

In my humble opinion, I think Miss Sarah is a hypocrite. Why? Because her husband Tom is in the Alaskan Independence Party-and that title alone is sinister. But, I have to expound further, so pardon me.

The Alaskan Independence Party is a political party in the U.S. state of Alaska that advocates a state vote which includes several options, including increased state autonomy, territorial status, becoming a separate nation or commonwealth state, and, failing that, for increased Alaskan control of Alaskan land, gun rights, privatization, home schooling, and reduction of governmental intrusion in the private lives of its citizens with adherence to the founding do*****ents of the United States. The party has appeared on the ballot in Alaska in all state elections since 1970.

In 1973 Joe Vogler made an issue about the Alaskan statehood vote. Early in that year, he began circulating a petition seeking support for secession of Alaska from the United States. Alaska magazine published a piece at that time in which Vogler claimed to have gathered 25,000 signatures in 3 weeks.

During the 1970s, Vogler founded Alaskans for Independence to actively pursue secession for Alaska from the United States. In 1984, he founded the AIP to explore whether the 1958 vote by Alaskans authorizing statehood was legal.

The Alaskan Independence Party quotes Vogler as stating “I’m an Alaskan, not an American. I’ve got no use for America or her damned institutions.”

Vogler would serve as the AIP’s standard-bearer for most of the party’s first two decades. He ran for governor in 1974, with Wayne Peppler as his running mate. Jay Hammond was elected over in*****bent governor William Egan, with Vogler trailing far behind. Typical political discussion of the day contended that Vogler was a “spoiler,” and that the result would have been different had he not been in the race. However, this campaign opened up the doors for non-major party candidates to run for major offices in Alaska, and generally this accusation is leveled during every election cycle.

Vogler’s running mate in 1986 was Al Rowe, a Fairbanks resident and former Alaska State Trooper. Rowe took out a series of newspaper ads, fashioning himself in the image of Sheriff Buford *****r. These ads were a major attention getter during the race. Between Rowe’s ads and the turmoil existing in the Republican Party over the nomination of Arliss Sturgulewski, the AIP gained 5.2 percent of the vote, becoming a recognized party in Alaska for the first time.

In 1990, Walter Joseph Hickel, a former Republican, won the election for governor as a member of the Alaskan Independence Party, along with Jack Coghill as his running mate. This was the only time since Alaska joined the union that a third-party candidate has been elected governor. However, Hickel never agreed with the party’s call for a vote on secession, leading to demands from party diehards that he be recalled. He rejoined the Republican Party in 1994, with eight months remaining in his term.

(On September 2, 2008, the *****ociated Press reported that the Alaska Division of Elections said that Todd Palin, the husband of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, had registered as a member of the Alaskan Independence Party in 1995 and 2000; he no longer is registered as a member of the party, having registered as “undeclared” since 2002.)

It is claimed by John McCain and Sarah Palin that she was never a member of the Alaska Independence Party; but a statement released by AIP chairman Lynnette Clark on September 3, 2008 Clark had the day earlier stated that Sarah Palin was a member, and attended the 1994 AIP Convention, but retracted her statement the following day, affirming that she was mistaken. Also, there is still a youtube video where Governor Palin is addressing the Alaskan Independence convention

Question: If Sarah is not in an organization that wants nothing to do with the United States, why she she addressing their convention, and saying ‘Keep up the good work’? .

Here’s the real issue-the Alaskan Independent Party had ties to Iran-which is considered a terrorist country, and actively worked with Iran to embarr***** the United States at the United Nations:

Joe Vogler’s greatest moment of glory was to be his 1993 appearance before the United Nations to denounce United States “tyranny” before the entire world and to demand Alaska’s freedom. The Alaska secessionist had persuaded the government of Iran to sponsor his anti-American harangue.

Iran. The Islamic dictatorship. The taker of American hostages. The rogue nation that McCain and Palin have excoriated Obama for suggesting we diplomatically engage. Just in case some of you all reading this do not understand-Iran is the same country who hates Israel.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Thursday 10/2/08 that the solution to the Middle East crisis is to destroy Israel.

Question: If the Alaskan Independence Party is a group who hates the United States so much that they would be in collusion with Iran-then what does that sya about Governor Sarah Palin and her husband, Tom???

Their friends in the AIP were clearly collaborating with Iran. Her husband was clearly a member of this fringe party for seven years. And Sarah Palin herself clearly supported them, praising their “good work” and asking God to “bless them” only this year.

So, to return to my orignal issue about Plain claiming that Obama is friends with terrorists-it’s asburd.

Understand facts about Bill Ayers and Barack Obama.

Bill Ayers expressed far left views, and one can argue he still does to this day. Bill Ayers became involved in the New Left and the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS). He rose to national prominence as an SDS leader in 1968 and 1969. As head of an SDS regional group, the “Jesse James Gang”, Ayers made decisive contributions to the Weatherman orientation toward militancy. The group Ayers headed in Detroit, Michigan became one of the earliest gatherings of what became the Weatherman. Between the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago and the June 1969 SDS convention, Ayers became a prominent leader of the group, which arose as a result of a schism in SDS. “During that time his infatuation with street fighting grew and he developed a language of confrontational militancy that became more and more *****ounced over the year”, disaffected former Weatherman member Cathy Wilkerson wrote in 2001. Ayers had previously become a roommate of Terry Robbins, a fellow militant, Wilkerson wrote. Robbins would later be killed while making a bomb. In June 1969, the Weatherman took control of the SDS at its national convention, where Ayers was elected Education Secretary. Later in 1969, Ayers parti*****ted in planting a bomb at a statue dedicated to riot police casualties in the 1886 Haymarket Riot confrontation between labor supporters and the police. The blast broke almost 100 windows and blew pieces of the statue onto the nearby Kennedy Expressway. The statue was rebuilt and unveiled on May 4, 1970, and blown up again by other Weathermen on October 6, 1970. Rebuilding it yet again, the city posted a 24-hour police guard to prevent another blast. Ayers parti*****ted in the Days of Rage riot in Chicago in October 1969, and in December was at the “War Council” meeting in Flint, Michigan. Larry Grathwohl, an FBI informant in the Weatherman group from the fall of 1969 to the spring of 1970, thought that “Ayers, along with Bernardine Dohrn, probably had the most authority within the Weatherman”.

Bill Ayers and Barack Obama at one time lived in the same neighborhood in the city of Chicago, and both had worked on education reform in the state of Illinois. The two met “at a luncheon meeting about school reform.” Obama was named to the Chicago Annenberg Challenge Project Board of Directors to oversee the distribution of grants in Chicago. Later in 1995, Ayers hosted “a coffee” for “Mr. Obama’s first run for office.” The two served on the board of a community anti-poverty group, the Woods Fund of Chicago, between 2000 and 2002, during which time the board met twelve times. In April 2001, Ayers contributed $200 to Obama’s re-election fund to the Illinois State Senate. Since 2002, there has been little linking Obama and Ayers. The Senator said in September 2008 that he hadn’t “seen him in a year-and-a-half.” In February 2008, Obama spokesman Bill Burton released a statement from the senator about the relationship between the two: “Senator Obama strongly condemns the violent actions of the Weathermen group, as he does all acts of violence. But he was an eight-year-old child when Ayers and the Weathermen were active, and any attempt to connect Obama with events of almost forty years ago is ridiculous.” CNN’s review of project records found nothing to suggest anything inappropriate in the non-profit projects in which the two men were involved. Internal reviews by The New York Times, The Washington Post, Time magazine, The Chicago Sun-Times, The New Yorker and The New Republic “have said that their reporting doesn’t support the idea that Obama and Ayers had a close relationship”.

Now, reporters have tried to make more about this than what it really is, but they couldn’t do it. But, Palin, on the other hand, is a hypocrite. I believe it it possible that John McCain knows about her radical ties-peep his campaign slogan “America First”.

The Alaskan Independence Party’s slogan is “Alaska First-Alaska Always.”

One truth my beloved belated mother taught me is, birds of a feather flock together. If Palin (Sarah) is making salutations to a organization who wants Iran-a terrorist nation-to help them to remove themselves from the U.S. to be their own country-then one could say maybe Sarah is a terrorist, but I will not go that far-my point has been made.

John and Sarah should not dig a ditch unless they dig it for themselves!

    Sydney;

I do believe that Obama needs to answer for his history with Ayers, Wright, and other questionable people he has had in his life. I do not fully agree with the way that Palin is doing this but I do understand. Even if Obama does become president he will probably always be vernalbe for an attack due to his race. There will always be prejudice people in the world and many of them are McCain and Obama supporters.

@Selena: Silence in the face of racial bigotry and abject hatred is as bad as openly endorsing it.

As far as experience goes, name one President in the last, oh let’s say, 30 years that had much foreign policy experience prior to getting elected? Democrat or Republican? They become effective by surrounding themselves with knowledgeable statesmen, and experts in various fields of governance. That is the purpose of the Cabinet, the Joint Chiefs, and amb*****adors and advisors. No President will ever have all the requisite “experience” upon arrival to the office, but I trust the wisdom of a man (or woman) who recognizes this and fills the empty seats with the smartest, best, and brightest.

Forgive me if I don’t want to hear “Gosh, golly-gee, and darn it all!” at a press conference, the negotiation table, or any other important national affair. I don’t want my leadaer winking, blinking, and twitching at world leaders. Sorry – that’s just me, I suppose. ;-)

  224. I believe another Bossiper found an article where Sarah Palin refers to Obama as ‘Sambo’, after he clinched the Democratic Nomination.

Also, John McCain said some racist remarks about Asians.

Once again, birds of a feather flocked together.

  225. Sydney

Thanks for that article, Black Woman!

Ladies, I’m looking for Republican strategist Mike Murphy (whom I happen to like and respect — he’s a smart guy) on McCain’s latest strategy, which he disagrees with. I believe he wrote about it on Time(dot)com.

Also, David Brooks of the NY Times, whom I also believe is conservative, had this to say about McCain (from The Huffington Post):

David Brooks spoke frankly about the presidential and vice presidential candidates Monday afternoon, calling Sarah Palin a “fatal cancer to the Republican party” but describing John McCain and Barack Obama as “the two best candidates we’ve had in a long time.”

In an interview with The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg at New York’s Le Cirque restaurant to unveil that magazine’s redesign, Brooks decried Palin’s anti-intellectualism and compared her to President Bush in that regard:

[Sarah Palin] represents a fatal cancer to the Republican party. When I first started in journalism, I worked at the National Review for Bill Buckley. And Buckley famously said he’d rather be ruled by the first 2,000 names in the Boston phone book than by the Harvard faculty. But he didn’t think those were the only two options. He thought it was important to have people on the conservative side who celebrated ideas, who celebrated learning. And his whole life was based on that, and that was also true for a lot of the other conservatives in the Reagan era. Reagan had an immense faith in the power of ideas. But there has been a counter, more populist tradition, which is not only to scorn liberal ideas but to scorn ideas entirely. And I’m afraid that Sarah Palin has those prejudices. I think President Bush has those prejudices.

Brooks praised Palin’s natural political talent, but said she is “absolutely not” ready to be president or vice president. He explained, “The more I follow politicians, the more I think experience matters, the ability to have a template of things in your mind that you can refer to on the spot, because believe me, once in office there’s no time to think or make decisions.”

The New York Times columnist also said that the “great virtue” of Palin’s counterpart, Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden, is that he is anything but a “yes man.”

“[Biden] can’t not say what he thinks,” Brooks remarked. “There’s no internal monitor, and for Barack Obama, that’s tremendously important to have a vice president who will be that way. Our current president doesn’t have anybody like that.”

Brooks also spent time praising Obama’s intellect and skills in social perception, telling two stories of his interactions with Obama that left him “dazzled”:

Obama has the great intellect. I was interviewing Obama a couple years ago, and I’m getting nowhere with the interview, it’s late in the night, he’s on the phone, walking off the Senate floor, he’s cranky. Out of the blue I say, ‘Ever read a guy named Reinhold Niebuhr?’ And he says, ‘Yeah.’ So i say, ‘What did Niebuhr mean to you?’ For the next 20 minutes, he gave me a perfect description of Reinhold Niebuhr’s thought, which is a very subtle thought process based on the idea that you have to use power while it corrupts you. And I was dazzled, I felt the tingle up my knee as Chris Matthews would say.

Via Alaskan News Reporter Charley James:

This is how Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin described Barack Obama’s win over Hillary Clinton to political colleagues in a restaurant a few days after Obama locked up the Democratic Party presidential nomination.

According to Lucille, the waitress serving her table at the time and who asked that her last name not be used, Gov. Palin was eating lunch with five or six people when the subject of the Democrat’s primary battle came up. The governor, seemingly not caring that people at nearby tables would likely hear her, uttered the slur and then laughed loudly as her meal mates joined in appreciatively.

It was kind of disgusting,” Lucille, who is part Aboriginal, said in a phone interview after admitting that she is frightened of being discovered telling folks in the “lower 48” about life near the North Pole.

Then, almost with a sigh, she added, “But that’s just Alaska.”

Racial and ethnic slurs may be “just Alaska” and, clearly, they are common, everyday chatter for Palin.

  234. I have a newsflash for you, Selena-people in John’s party thinks he’s scary.

Once, in 2000-when cindy McCain made a joke about John’s hair, he said

“At least I don’t plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you *****”-directly to Cindy!!! When asked this question at a town hall meeting on April 23, 2008-John refused to answer.

A July 5 NewsMax.com article quoted former Sen. Bob Smith, a New Hampshire Republican who served with McCain on the Senate Armed Services Committee, as saying, “I have witnessed incidents where he has used profanity at colleagues and exploded at colleagues . . . He would disagree about something and then explode. It was incidents of irrational behavior. We’ve all had incidents where we have gotten angry, but I’ve never seen anyone act like that.”

“Only an *****hole would put together a budget like this,” John told the former Budget Committee chairman, Sen. Pete Domenici, in 1999.

McCain has even blown up at volunteers and, on occasion, the average Joe.

He often pokes fun at his reputation: “Thanks for the question, you little jerk,” he said last year to a New Hampshire high school student wondering if McCain, at 71, was too old to be president.

Now, I do not think having anger issues and being a racist counts much for experience, but we all are entitled to our opinions.

  235. Peggy Noonan, Mike Murphy Caught On Tape Disparaging Palin Choice: “Political Bull,” “Gimmicky”

    Huffington Post | September 3, 2008 04:35 PM

    ——————————————————————————–

Peggy Noonan addressed the open mic incident in the Wall Street Journal, and claimed that the “It’s over” remark was not in reference to the McCain campaign but rather to the days when the Republican party could *****ume its base represented the mainstream American opinion:

When the segment was over and MSNBC was in commercial, Todd, Murphy and I continued our conversation, talking about the Palin choice overall. We were speaking informally, with some p*****ion — and into live mics. An audio tape of that conversation was sent, how or by whom I don’t know, onto the internet. And within three hours I was receiving it from friends far and wide, asking me why I thought the McCain campaign is “over”, as it says in the transcript of the conversation. Here I must plead some confusion. In our off-air conversation, I got on the subject of the leaders of the Republican party *****uming, now, that whatever the base of the Republican party thinks is what America thinks. I made the case that this is no longer true, that party leaders seem to me stuck in the *****umptions of 1988 and 1994, the *****umptions that reigned when they were young and coming up. “The first lesson they learned is the one they remember,” I said to Todd — and I’m pretty certain that is a direct quote. But, I argued, that’s over, those *****umptions are yesterday, the party can no longer *****ume that its base is utterly in line with the thinking of the American people. And when I said, “It’s over!” — and I said it more than once — that is what I was referring to. I am pretty certain that is exactly what Todd and Murphy understood I was referring to. In the truncated version of the conversation, on the Web, it appears I am saying the McCain campaign is over. I did not say it, and do not think it. In fact, at an on-the-record press symposium on the campaign on Monday, when all of those on the panel were pressed to predict who would win, I said that I didn’t know, but that we just might find “This IS a country for old men.” That is, McCain may well win. I do not think the campaign is over, I do not think this is settled, and did not suggest, back to the Todd-Murphy conversation, that “It’s over.”

Original Post: Wall Street Journal columnist and former Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan and former John McCain adviser, Time columnist, and MSNBC contributor Mike Murphy were caught on tape disparaging John McCain’s selection of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his Vice Presidential running mate.

    “It’s over,” Noonan said.

When Chuck Todd asked her if this was the most qualified woman the Republicans could nominate, Noonan responded, “The most qualified? No. I think they went for this, excuse me, political bull***** about narratives. Every time the Republicans do that, because that’s not where they live and that’s not what they’re good at, they blow it.”

Murphy characterized the choices as “cynical” and “gimmicky.”

Watch (the dialogue in question starts 38 seconds in, full transcript is below the video):

Chuck Todd: Mike Murphy, lots of free advice, we’ll see if Steve Schmidt and the boys were watching. We’ll find out on your blackberry. Tonight voters will get their chance to hear from Sarah Palin and she will get the chance to show voters she’s the right woman for the job Up next, one man who’s already convinced and he’ll us why Gov. Jon Huntsman. (cut away)

    Peggy Noonan: Yeah.

The Ayers connection has already been throughly addressed. Need I also remind everyone that Ayers turned himself in to the Feds and was NEVER charged for his supposed crimes. Obama was 8 years old when Ayers committed those acts and he served on a board with Ayers after law school.

Just because he served on a committee with Ayers and helped Ayers distribute money towards education in Chicago does NOT mean that Obama has radical views, condones terrorist acts, or is a terrorist himself!!

Ayers has been reformed and has moved past the atrocities of nearly 35 years ago….the rest of America should move on as well instead of rehashing old news from months ago.

  237. Sydney

Found what I was looking for. Below is an excerpt from GOP strategist Mike Murphy’s interview Sunday on Meet the Press:

MR. MURPHY: Yeah. I—I’m not sure that should be accepted as a premise by the McCain campaign. I think they have to prosecute that all the way. That’s a smart ad by Obama. If McCain lets him get away with that, he’s going to have trouble. I think the Obama campaign wants to run economy vs. character. I think what McCain ought to pivot to is, one, connect himself to middle-cl***** worries and squeezes. He is a reformer who’s going to change the way Washington works. That’s built into his DNA. And second, bring up the issue of the concept of a runaway liberal one-party train here in Washington. You know, just no checks and balances at all. McCain, a partisan, can-do pragmatist vs. the idea that everything in this town being run by the Democrats with no restraint, no balance, no control, and that’ll affect the economy in a bad way. I think that’s a better prosecution for the McCain campaign than these character attacks or these dubious *****ociation, you know, background issues and Obama. They’re hurt him, but I don’t think that’s the key when everybody in the country, at least the swing voters that are going to control the election, are very much worried about the economy. That’s where all the interest, focus and worry is.

  238. Sydney

Speaking of Peggy Noonan, below are remarks from her also from Sunday’s Meet the Press, www(dot)msnbc(dot)com:

MR. BROKAW: And, Peggy Noonan, as you know, the McCain campaign has signaled pretty strongly they’re going to strain—change their strategy. We have a quote from The Weekly Standard. Bill Kristol, who is the editor, is, of course, in the College of Cardinals, he’s the Pope when it comes to writing about what’s going on in the conservative movement. He says in The Weekly Standard, “More important is the negative message. The McCain campaign has to convince 51 percent of the voters they can’t trust Barack Obama to be our next president. … Character is a legitimate issue. Obama hasn’t shown much in the way of leadership or political courage, and he’s consorted with dubious figures. It’s fair to ask whether Barack Obama is personally trustworthy enough to be president, and the McCain campaign shouldn’t be intimidated from going there.” We already heard on this broadcast, Senator Palin yesterday, raising the *****ociation that he had with William Ayers, who is a former member of the Weathermen, a very radical group from the ‘60s and ‘70s, who is now a school reformer in Illinois. Is this a smart strategy, in your judgment, for the McCain campaign?

MS. NOONAN: You know what, this has been a long campaign. We are in the last month. It is still close. Whoever’s rising or, or, or falling, it’s really close. And some part of me fears they’re going to open up the gates of hell on this one. It seems to me there is trench warfare out there. The left—there’s a huge middle in America, but there’s a left. They think they’re going to win, and they’re getting meaner than ever. The right fears they’re going to lose, they’re getting meaner than ever. I would hate to see this descend into this, this—“I’ll kill—I’ll tear your throat out” kind of stuff. I think that would be harmful. I think we are at a unique and dangerous…

    MR. YEPSEN: But, Tom…

MS. NOONAN: …moment in history, and it’s the last thing we need. And I don’t speak as a sissy; I’m trying to speak as an adult.

    MR. BROKAW: Yeah. David.

MR. YEPSEN: There’s a danger, Tom, that it backfires.

    MS. NOONAN: Yeah. Yeah.

MR. YEPSEN: I mean, clearly John McCain is worried. They’re, they’re on defense. The best proof of that, Tom, is, is what is Sarah Palin doing this afternoon? She is in Omaha, Nebraska. Now, when a Republican vice presidential candidate has to go to defend one congressional district—they vote their electors by congressional district–30 days out, it tells you they’re worried. And so what, what I see happening in the McCain campaign, with all this talk about William Ayers, is this sort of a sense of desperation. It could get carried away, and it’s irrelevant to people in mainstream America, in middle America. You know, William Ayers, what do they care about—how is that going to put gas in the tank or get somebody a job? I think it runs the risk of coming off as irrelevant.

  239. The rest of that tape:

Mike Murphy: You know, because I come out of the blue swing state governor world: Engler, Whitman, Tommy Thompson, Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush. I mean, these guys — this is how you win a Texas race, just run it up. And it’s not gonna work. And –

    PN: It’s over.

MM: Still McCain can give a version of the Lieberman speech to do himself some good.

CT: I also think the Palin pick is insulting to Kay Bailey Hutchinson, too.

    PN: Saw Kay this morning.

CT: Yeah, she’s never looked comfortable about this –

    MM: They’re all bummed out.

CT: Yeah, I mean is she really the most qualified woman they could have turned to?

PN: The most qualified? No! I think they went for this — excuse me– political bull***** about narratives –

CT: Yeah they went to a narrative.

    MM: I totally agree.

PN: Every time the Republicans do that, because that’s not where they live and it’s not what they’re good at, they blow it.

MM: You know what’s really the worst thing about it? The greatness of McCain is no cynicism, and this is cynical.

CT: This is cynical, and as you called it, gimmicky.

    MM: Yeah.

I do not have a problem with programs that support people who are trying their damnest to make it to where they no longer need them. I will concur with you that there are people who abuse the system.

But you wrong about saying Barack wants to raise your taxes. If you make less than 250,000 a year your taxes will not go up but go down, and if you do make above that-your taxes will go to the same level it was when Bill Clinton was in office.

Also-why is it that you have nothing to say about John McCain’s involvement with Keating 5? That is partially responsible for this financial turmoil.

I would like for you to get specific in your discussion. You said what you said about Obama, and that’s ok-but tell me what about John? What will he do for me?

  274. JOHN MCCAIN IS A MAVERICK WHO IS NOT AFRAID TO CHALLENGE MAJOR CORPORATIONS.

  275. i agree look at those folks i that company AIG that had all that money that helped bail then out and then they went n took taxpayers money to go to spas (expensive hotel resorts and all kind of mess) which folks that work 2 jobs could probably never afford if they wanted too, its a dam shame n its ridiculous how all that money is spent on rich company and then the *****’s who got fired and is collecting miliions in benefits after being fired, no matter what OBAMA/BIDEN 2008!

  277. Let’s talk about John McCain’s latest idea-to spend 300 billion on the bad mortgages. This is a bad idea, because the plan would cause the government hand out more money for mortgages in a plan that would guarantee taxpayers lose money, and put them at risk of losing even more if home values don’t recover.

Black Conservative-you eluded to welfare. What do you know about wealth-fare?

I’m saving that pic on My*****e. Mccain tried his best to make Obama look bad last night, but it didn’t work. Obama stood his ground and was calm about everything. MCcain is only making himself look even more like the loser he already is by trying to hurt someones elses intergrity.

  283. B-Nice

I just don’t get it I know all people cannot agree with Senator Obama. However, some people down play Obama’s education, and political stance to bring new ideas in reconstructing America’s economic system.

A commentary on CNN just called Obama a smooth talker, and McCain a straight talker. How much do they pay these people to talk this nonsense because obviously I am in the wrong profession.

I suggest everyone try to go to a Obama/Biden rally. I went to see Joe Biden today at a rally and it was by far the most riveting moment of my life. What an exciting movement, “Movement” that is how a describe this election.

    Obama/Biden

  284. Black Conservative

This is a discussion. My emotions have nothing to do with the topic, and neither do yours. You support your candidate based on the economy, the wame way I do mine. I have discussion partially things that relate to Obama’s agenda, and you have not done so to for John McCain. Now, I would think that if we were to interject emotions into the discussion-it is possible that you feel p*****ionate about John McCain-which would be furthered if you would expound on his record and his plans if elected. I am serious. I want to understand your candidate, and I am giving you the opportunity to do that-but if you cannot do this simple task, then it causes me to suspect that you are not as informed about John McCain as I am about Barack Obama, and you are voting for him out of ignorance the same way others did for George W. Bush, but I digress. I will give you one more chance for you to give me detaisl about John McCain’s plans-if you can’t then I will know it’s because he really has none.

I really want to know why you will not respond to John McCain’s relations with Michael Keating, though.

  296. Black Conservative, are you p*****ive-aggressive?

  297. BLACK CONSERVATIVE::

Here is some info about McCain will “CHALLENGE MAJOR CORPORATIONS.

McCain also did his part to loosen regulations on big corporations. In 1997, McCain became chairman of the powerful Senate Commerce Committee, which oversees the insurance and telecommunications industries, as well as the CEO pay packages of those McCain now denounces as “fat cats.” The special interests with business before the committee were big and well-heeled. All told, executives and fundraisers *****ociated with these firms donated $2.6 million to McCain when he served as the chairman or ranking member.

The money bought influence. In 1998, employees of BellSouth contributed more than $16,000 to McCain. The senator returned the favor, asking the Federal Communications Commission to give “serious consideration” to the company’s request to become a long-distance carrier. Days after legislation benefiting the satellite-TV carrier EchoStar cleared McCain’s committee, the company’s founder celebrated by hosting a major fundraiser for McCain’s presidential bid.

Whatever McCain’s romantic entanglements with the lobbyist Vicki Iseman, he was clearly in bed with her clients, who donated nearly $85,000 to his campaigns. One of her clients, Bud Paxson, set up a meeting with McCain in 1999, frustrated by the FCC’s delay of his proposed takeover of a television station in Pittsburgh. Paxson had treated McCain well, offering the then-presidential candidate use of his corporate jet to fly to campaign events and ponying up $20,000 in campaign donations.

“You’re the head of the commerce committee,” Paxson told McCain, according to The Washington Post. “The FCC is not doing its job. I would love for you to write a letter.”

Iseman helped draft the text, and McCain sent the letter. Several weeks later — the day after McCain used Paxson’s jet to fly to Florida for a fundraiser — McCain wrote another letter. FCC chair William Kennard sent a sharp rebuke to McCain, calling the senator’s meddling “highly unusual.” Nonetheless, within a week of McCain’s second letter, the FCC ruled three-to-two in favor of Paxson’s deal.

Following his failed presidential bid in 2000, McCain needed a vehicle to keep his brand alive. He founded the Reform Institute, which he set up as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit — a tax status that barred it from explicit political activity. McCain proceeded to staff the institute with his campaign manager, Rick Davis, as well as the fundraising chief, legal counsel and communications chief from his 2000 campaign.

There is no small irony that the Reform Institute — founded to bolster McCain’s crusade to rid politics of unregulated soft money — itself took in huge sums of unregulated soft money from companies with interests before McCain’s committee. EchoStar got in on the ground floor with a donation of $100,000. A charity funded by the CEO of Univision gave another $100,000. Cablevision gave $200,000 to the Reform Institute in 2003 and 2004 — just as its officials were testifying before the commerce committee. McCain urged approval of the cable company’s proposed pricing plan. As Bradley Smith, the former chair of the Federal Election Commission, wrote at the time: “Appearance of corruption, anyone?”

  319. Look at our brother OBAMA, knock his *ss on election day. And no the race card will forever be there as long as we live in a world where hatred regarding someones skin color exist. Leave the race card in the deck, this has nothing to do with a mans color, OBAMA has more cl***** and dignity then this clown, we are TIRED of the way things have been done in this country and since white men have proved time and time again, they don’t know what the hell they are doing in the white house let a brother see what he can do. I support Obama all the way but I don’t think Bossip calling McCain a bo*****o is called for. You’re not helping.

You people need to remember that Black people make up 12 percent of the U.S. population. 12 percent!!!! That means we (Black people) will not elect Barrack or anyone else unless White people also support him.

So you all need to stop with the silly comments because they do not help Barrack one iota.

I am honestly disappointed in all of the comments on here. I guarantee many of you are voting for Obama for one reason and that reason is because he’s black. That shows the ignorance you lack to choose a president based on that. Everything talks about wanting change..change means more than the change of race. I bet if you were polled to give 5 reasons of what Obama stood for, your answers would not be sufficient. I am an African American woman and if I am being honest, both candidates have things to offer and both of them have views I disagree on, but there is no way, I would vote for a president based on the color of his skin, even if he was my own kind. Remember, presidential nominees can promise many things before being in the office, but it does not mean, they can really make it happen. Everyone can talk a good. To the editor of this piece, its very disappointing that you bad mouth McCain all the time…how do you know that everyone that reads your column is a Obama fan? That show’s your ignorance and maturity level.

  323. Sydney

FYI, TIME magazine, www(dot)time(dot)com, has an interesting piece today, “Does Sarah Palin Have a Pentecostal Problem?,” on Sarah Palin’s religion, and it includes a mention of the video of Pastor Muthee.

Also, CNN’s Campbell Brown had this to say yesterday about McCain’s campaign tactics:

In her “No Bias, No Bull” segment Wednesday night, Campbell Brown pleaded with the McCain campaign to stop what she referred to as “race baiting.”

“It is getting very, very ugly,” Brown said. “Tonight, we are cutting through the bull on the issue of race and this campaign.”

Brown blasted McCain surrogates for injecting race Obama’s race into the campaign narrative by invoking his middle name or referring to him as a terrorist, and she called on McCain to deliver a “much stronger denunciation than a campaign-generated paper statement”:

Look, everybody, we all know that we are in unchartered territory here. Never before has there been an African-American presidential nominee. So without question, race is going to be part of the conversation. Race baiting doesn’t have to be. And yet, it is happening in this campaign.

Also, Esquire, www(dot)esquire(dot)com, has endorsed Obama for president, marking the first time the magazine has endorsed a presidential candidate.

Have an interesting read for your perusal:

THOUGHTS FROM CONSERVATIVE DAVID BROOKS ON MONDAY

    ON SARAH PALIN:

“[Sarah Palin] represents a fatal cancer to the Republican party. I think President Bush has those prejudices.”

    ON JOE BIDEN:

“”The New York Times columnist also said that the “great virtue” of Palin’s counterpart, Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden, is that he is anything but a “yes man.”

“[Biden] can’t not say what he thinks,” Brooks remarked. “There’s no internal monitor, and for Barack Obama, that’s tremendously important to have a vice president who will be that way. Our current president doesn’t have anybody like that.”

    ON BARACK OBAMA:

Brooks also spent time praising Obama’s intellect and skills in social perception, telling two stories of his interactions with Obama that left him “dazzled”:

“Obama has the great intellect.

And the other thing that does separate Obama from just a pure intellectual: he has tremendous powers of social perception. And this is why he’s a politician, not an academic. A couple of years ago, I was writing columns attacking the Republican congress for spending too much money. And I throw in a few sentences attacking the Democrats to make myself feel better. And one morning I get an email from Obama saying, ‘David, if you wanna attack us, fine, but you’re only throwing in those sentences to make yourself feel better.’ And it was a perfect description of what was going through my mind. And everybody who knows Obama all have these stories to tell about his capacity for social perception.”

Brooks predicted an Obama victory by nine points, and said that although he found Obama to be “a very mediocre senator,” he was is surrounded by what Brooks called “by far the most impressive people in the Democratic party.”

“He’s phenomenally good at surrounding himself with a team,” Brooks said. “I disagree with them on most issues, but I am given a lot of comfort by the fact that the people he’s chosen are exactly the people I think most of us would want to choose if we were in his shoes. So again, I have doubts about him just because he was such a mediocre senator, but his capacity to pick staff is impressive.”

    Hey, Marquis! Thanks!

When you have a chance, can you check out the Rolling Stone article on McCain, “Make-Believe Maverick?” It’s a long read, but very informative and insightful.

  327. Sydney

    Hey, Marquis! Thanks!

Oops, sorry for the double posts.

  331. Bean

    OBAMA said knock you out!!!!

  332. LEROY

    Good comment Tanya!!

  333. LEROY

Obama is certainly the most liberal member of Congress. If you want the government to stand between you and your doctor; then Obama is your man.

  334. LEROY

Why doesn’t Obama ever answer tough questions instead of talking mumbo jumbo.

  335. Ms. T.

Cindy McCain is cold as ice. She’s not going to shake anybody’s hand and all that Botox keeps her face from showing expression. Sad!

    Obama 08″ YES WE CAN!!!!!

  336. goldeelox

I can’t stand McCain but please don’t call him albino. I’m albino and he ain’t one of us!

  337. AzzedineAliaFan

@Leroy, why not let Palin answer tough questions? this broad is a true joke, all she can do is dodge questions as we’ve seen time and time again and spew hatred as we’ve heard this week at various rallies, how as a black person can you align with that garbage?? it’s obivous you’re voting for the repubs by your comments.

  338. LEROY

    @AzzedineAliaFan

What do you mean she’s a true joke? I mean she so happens to be a governor. Plus, she’s not spewing hatred; but rather being quite truthful. Obama’s character needs to be evaluated; don’t you think?

  339. trs

    @ Leroy

I would suggest that Palin AND McCain’s characters need to be further evaluated. Palin has already proven herself a liar, and she is also going out of her way to stall an investigation into her alledged abuses of power as gov. of Alaska. If she doesn’t have anything to hide, why not cooperate?

As AzzedineAliaFan said, she’s a “joke” because she is clearly out of her league. She avoided the media for weeks because she couldn’t answer difficult questions about foreign policy and domestic issues without studying and/or practicing with a coach. What was up with the “I may not answer the questions like you want me to answer them but I what I will do is speak to the American people” statement that she made during the debate? The answer: BECAUSE SHE DOESN’T HAVE THE ANSWERS!! She is NOT presidential in any way, shape, or form. THAT is why she is a joke.

Furthermore, McCain isn’t as squeaky clean as the Repubs would like to believe. Since they want to focus on Obama’s judgment or lack thereof, then both of them could stand to take a good look in the mirror.

And for the record, Palin isn’t evaluating Obama’s character. She is blatantly casting aspersions upon it. Palin knows damn well that Obama is not a terrorist and was not affiliated with Ayers actions. They are intentionally trying to sway voters who don’t know any better, and sadly, they will probably garner a small amount of votes because ignorance loves company!

What baffles me is that Cindy McCain has the nerve to state that Obama’s campaign is running the “dirtiest campaign in history!” She needs to turn over and look at that “that one” that sleeps next to her at night because McCain/Palin are amongst the dirtiest candidates up for office that I have seen in a long time!

  340. LEROY

When Obama loses this election, he should apologize for running in the first place. He instilled false hope in people. He is so unqualified and shady. And the media isn’t helping either.

  341. LEROY

    @trl

By the way, Palin never lied. She no doubt stumbled though. Did you not know that the interview by Couric lasted for hours and the media only played the part in which she stumbled. FYI; no one is perfect not even Obama. The media is so on Obama’s side. Obama lied to the American people about his *****ociation with Ayers and a whole host of other subjects like Public Financing. This election is about Obama and McCain; not Palin/Biden. But again, why can’t Obama just be truthful.

  342. LEROY

Another point, people should not be cohersed into registering to vote. That is every individuals own choice. Why is the Obama campaign relentlessly cohersing people to go out and register to vote. I mean, if he’s so inspiring and all that then people should not need any cohersing to go out and register to vote.

  343. trs

    @ Leroy

Oh yes “Leroy”…Palin has told numerous lies. She lied by stating that she “said no thanks to the Bridge to Nowhere” when she actually publically supported it (while running for governor) until the public outcry against the extravagant expense. In actuality, she never had a chance to say “no thanks” to the bridge to nowhere because Congress killed the project and *****igned that money to Alaskan transportation projects before she could get a word in edgewise!

She also claims that she “cut earmark spending” when in fact, as Alaska’s governor, she has requested millions of dollars in earmark spending for Alaska’s budget…which is among the highest in the union when you consider the state’s meager number of residents compared to more populous states.

    I also have others….if you’re interested.

Obama has explained the Ayers connection more than once, so there is no point in me addressing it with you. But since you want to talk about truth, I propose that Palin and McCain need to be truthful and fess up to the truth about a LOT of lies that they have told over the course of the last few weeks.

Like Rozza said: “you can’t sling mud while wearing a white suit” because you’re going to get dirty. This notion of the importance of truth that you’re emphasizing works both ways.

  344. LEROY

Good points. But Palin did not lie during the interview which was what I was addressing. And just because she may have requested millions in earmark spending for her state does not mean that the spending went up. In fact, the earmarks could have gone down compared to previous fiscal years for that state. Did you know that earmark spending (pork) only account for roughly 10 percent of the US Federal Budget. This issue is not really what is important in this election; but yeah give me some more ‘lies’ so I can set it straight.

  345. trs

    @ Leroy

Believe it or not, I know quit a bit about earmark spending. My point was she lied…period. In addition, I feel as if it would be pointless to go over the numerous lies that Palin and McCain have told over the course of the last few months because I have a feeling that you already know…but you’re a staunch McCain supporter so you won’t admit it. However, just for giggles and grins, I will name a few:

    1. McCain is a straight up lie when he says that he’s an agent for change. McCain voted with Bush 100% of the time in 2008 and 95% of the time in 2007. How is that change? Yeah he’s a real “maverick.”

    2. McCain has claimed that he has received “every award from every veteran’s organization” for his service. That’s just a bold faced lie. In fact, he was given a 20% approval rating from the Disabled veterans of America due to the fact that he voted against funds for Disabled veterans. The Vietnam Veterans of America and the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans for America have also expressed distain for McCain as well.

    3. Both McCain and Palin have repeatedly lied by *****erting that Obama will increase our taxes. 95% of Americans will not see an increase in their taxes. Those who make more than 250,000 a year will not be affected. This includes most small businesses as well, since most small businesses do not make up more than 250,000 a year.

    4. The McCain campaign lied when they said that “Obama wanted to teach kindergartners about sex before they learn how to read.” Liar Liar!! Obama wanted to educate kids to keep them from child molesters and rapists, not provide detailed sex education.

    5. The McCain campaign stated that Obama was responsible for high fuel prices. Don’t even get me started.

    6. McCain’s campaign stated that Obama wouldn’t go see the troops while he was in Germany because he wasn’t allowed to bring cameras and therefore, he wouldn’t get the publicity. That is also a flat out lie. Obama stated that he never intended to take cameras, and in fact, Obama had already visited other troops in Germany without cameras a few days before!

So Leroy, like I said… the McShames have numerous lies that they should answer for. Remember that notion of truth? ;) Believe me, there is SO MUCH more that I can list, but I am weary of typing….and like I said…I am willing to bet that you are already aware of all of the lies, you just don’t care because you’re voting for the McShames anyway.

You are right about one thing: this election is not about any of aforementioned issues that we have previously discussed. That also goes both ways…this election is not about the purported Obama-Ayers connection either.

  346. LEROY

    @trs

John McCain is a maverick not because he is an agent of change; but because he knows how to reach across the aisle to get things done. At least he has a record of reaching out to democrats to get legislation done.

Second, McCain did not vote for certain bills because they were loaded down with earmarks [as stated in the second debate].

Third, Obama was out shooting 3pointers in Iraq instead of talking to our troops. Apparently, he enjoys being the center of attention and being Mr. Popular. McCain does not do what is popular; he does what is right.

Fourth, Obama cannot admit that he was wrong about the surge being a success. He is stubborn and won’t admit to mistakes.

Fifth, Obama will fine you if you do not have health insurance. I mean, what is this? That will hurt the most financially deprived Americans. So much for caring about the American people. He won’t even be able to pay for his health care plan now since we’ve bailed out Wall Street with $700 billion.

Sixth, Obama will increase our taxes. Where do you think the money for his health plan is supposed to come from?

  347. LEROY

    @trs

Most small businesses may not make more than 250,000 per year but the businesses that employ a majority of our workforce do make more that 250K.

So Obama’s tax increase on those business will cause job loss. This is not the time to levy taxes on the segment of our society that create jobs. Any I enjoyed your comments and arguments. You’re a studied debater and this is the type of reasonable dialogue we need in this country.

  348. trs

    @ Leroy

    *Sigh*

Anyone can claim to be a “maverick.” Just because McCain worked across party lines and cooperated with democrats does not make him an agent for “change.” This is especially true when he has wallowed in the pigstye that is the Bush Administration for 90% of the last 8 years and voted with Bush 90% of the time!!! How is that change? Republicans and Democrats in the House and Senate just worked together to p***** this bs bailout bill. So are they all “mavericks” now? Gimme a break.

So Obama played basketball in Iraq. Big deal. That’s not even relevant.

Obama has gone on record as saying that “the surge has worked better than we could have imagined.” How is that NOT admitting that the surge was a success? Sorry, but you’re way off with that one.

Or is it that you just want to hear someone say “I was wrong?” When has McCain admitted to being wrong about anything in this election?

I am not going to go there with you about Obama raising taxes because I have already listed Obama’s stance on taxes. You chose to ignore it and coast on the Republican’s viw of Obama’s tax plan instead.

Every American should have health insurance. McCain voted against the child health insurance policy act and stated in the debate that health care was a “responsibility.” Like Obama, I believe that health care is a “RIGHT.” That is one of many reasons that I am voting for Obama on Nov 4th.

“Leroy,” We’re not going to agree on much of anything, so we need not go back and forth debating our candidates’s stance on these issues.

I am still voting for Obama and you’re still going to vote for McCain, so we’ll see what happens Nov. 4th!

It is clear that you have made your choice. I’ve made mine as well. We’ll see what happens on Nov 4th.

  349. Mahogany

    LEROY—

I’m sorry to tell you “my friend”…that your facts are invalid. They are straight out of the republican playbook. Do you make more than $250k annually? If not…no tax increase boo boo. Should taxes be increased for those making $250k or highly…yes they should. Why? Because the American tax system is old and unfair. Making 80k—I shouldn’t have to pay more taxes than someone that earns $180k…it’s simply ridiculous!!!The SURGE—-that was a tactic and not a strategy “my friend” and it should have been. So a tactical measure is much harder to measure…vs a strategy—let me remind you…there shouldn’t have been a SURGE in the first place. We have NO business in IRAQ!!!! Parents who choose not to insure their children when it’s going to be practically super cheap to have health insurance—-should be fined. Either sign your child up for the CHIP—Children’s Health Insurance Program which is like $15 a month or less or be fined or become a charity case to our fragile hospital system.

McCain is not innocent when it comes to pork-spending…he himself has asked for millions of dollars too. That whole notion about Obama shooting hoops but not seeing the troops are a smear and lies by the dishonest GOP…you followers are like wired robots that will jump off the cliff if lead to it by McBush…what a shame. I need you to do a little more research and not believe all that is fed to you.

  350. trs

    @ Leroy

Are we not already losing jobs under Bush’s tax cuts?

Thanks for the kudos. I appreciate you conversing without name calling or hurling insults. You have good points as well, but we just don’t see eye to eye about many things. However, that’s part of what’s so wonderful about this great country. It provides us the freadom of speech and affords us this opportunity to speak our minds and vote for the candidate of our choice.

We’re worlds apart on the issues but we’re both great Americans.

    God Bless,

  354. Anyone can claim to be a “maverick.”

Joey Biden put it best ‘You can’t claim to be a maverick when all you have been is a sidekick.’

John McCain himself has said he has voted with Bush OVER 90% of the time. Now, he and Miss Sarah wants to remove himself from that *****ociation-but 8 years is hard to forget!

  355. Bossip-you need to find tapes on Pastor Manning. He is criticizing Obama again-and he is saying to pray for Palin and her daughter.
