Studies Show That Smartphone Preference Varies Significantly By Race

This is an interesting study, but we think we could have figured this out by just walking around the mall.

As smartphone platforms battle each other for dominance, a new study may provide some insight into which groups of people are buying different phones.

Recent data released by Nielsen shows that at least among Asians (which includes Pacific Islanders) and African-Americans, certain platforms reign supreme. Thirty-six percent of Asians with smartphones have iPhones, while 31 percent of African-Americans with smartphones go for a BlackBerry.

Generally, according to Nielsen’s breakdowns and categories, Asians, Hispanics and African-Americans are purchasing smartphones at higher rates than “Whites”–45 percent of Asians and Hispanics and 33 percent of African-Americans are smartphone users, while only 27 percent of Whites are.

While 60 percent of Asians, 56 percent of Hispanics and 44 percent of African-Americans purchasing phones in the past six months bought smartphones, only 42 percent of caucasian users did the same.

We definitely know folks that use all of these different devices, but the stat about black folks and the blackberrys and Asian folks with iPhones hit the nail on the head.

i think its purely a social issue. if your friend has a “decent” ( price included) phone. Then its obvious that youll consider purchasing the same one, behind their recommendation.

I know what you mean. “True Love In The Strangest Form”

I bought a Blackberry back in 2006 because all the executives at my company had the same devices. I figured, I want to be where they are some day. Then I started noticing average everyday Birds in the hood asking me for my PIN so they could BBM me and I switched to a Droid. But now that Verizon has the iphone, I’m switching again.

I was never one to buy phones based on whats popular. I’ve loved Nokia since ’01 and continue to buy directly from them each year.

I think this is quite obvious because different races like different things

  • We"Blacks"AreTheREALHebrewIsraelites

Do they have a study that shows, by race, how many people think this study is stupid?

    • Bdot

Extremely stupid. Whites make up 70% of the country, so while their percentage is lower, the total numbers probably dwarf the others. Also, studies like this typically fail to show how many total people were polled to come up with their percentages. A nice way of putting it is that these types of studies are ridiculously skewed.

    …And their point is????!!!

Even tho this “study” aint saving lives, at least i didnt have to hear the typical negative statistics of Blacks are #1 with HIV, Blacks are #1 with obesity…..

All of these people with contracts are stupid. I don’t have bad credit but I use Boost Mobile because I’ll be darned if I’m signing another contract with anyone. Cingular/AT& T got me good the first time, after that, I decided that paying anything over $50 per month was a waste!
I don’t even like my I-POD, so why go out and get an I-PHONE?

  • really...what?

The iPhone must be incorporated into ones life. This is not a phone, it has a phone, but it is not just a phone.

PHONES?!?! They’re Doing Studies On Phones Now?!?!? An Idle Mind………

iPhone is more than just a phone. IPhone is everything I do in life. If I lose it, say goodbye to all my info. But I can still track it down. Anyway, I love my iPhone and I don’t just use it to talk or text but rather for a lot of things such as tracking down my cash, gps, Internet, weather and with over 100s of thousands of applications, who would get rid of their iphone. Once you go iPhone, you will never look back at your old phone.

  • Jamrock

Androids over iPhone and black berries are irrelevant.

  • Are you out of your da*m mind!

Iphones are not as popular among black people because a computer is necessary to fully operate and support the phone. Look up the number of households within the black community that don’t have computers and internet access. Shocking!

  • yaz

I have my friends who are Afo American have iPhones. I have a HTC HD2. I’m not a blackberry person. But I guess.
