The Co-Founder Of Def Jam Poetry Said This About The Youngster:

Suli Breaks R.I.P. video shoots straight to the jugular vein of one’s consciousness. R.I.P. is a Call to Arms for those to drop their arms and embrace peace.” -Bruce George, Co-Founder of Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam on HBO

Inspiration: In the same year so many youths had become victim to this same scenario. I just felt that something needed to change, and I used the only tool I had at the time to affect that change and that was my words. You know I acknowledge that I can not stop all the violence at once, but I just wanted people, particularly young black people to know that it can be “cool” not to promote violence, and it still be relevant. I hope when they realise they don’t have to promote it, it will steer them away from that lifestyle and find more creative means to channel that energy.

“Well, the part of London where I am from Wood Green is notorious for knife crime. Two days, before I wrote this I was supposed to be attending an event, but just before the event the main DJ was stabbed to death. He not gang affiliated, nor someone who promoted violence in his work or lifestyle. I just felt that something needs to change, even if I could try and make people see that it can be “cool” not to promote violence, and it still be relevant.”
