Poor thang! Serena Williams can’t seem to catch a break this year.

Still in rehab for her foot injury, she hasn’t played since July after stepping on some broken glass and having foot surgery. Now she’s been hospitalized for something much more serious.

Serena Williams has suffered from a pulmonary embolism, a blood clot in her lungs. She had been spotted at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles several times over the past week, but her rep, Nicole Chabot, has finally confirmed her health status to PEOPLE.

On Monday, February 28, Serena “underwent emergency treatment at Cedars for a hematoma she suffered as a result of treatment for a more critical situation.”

“Last week, Serena suffered from a pulmonary embolism [a blood clot in the lungs] which was discovered upon her return to L.A. She had been in New York for doctor appointments for the ongoing issues with her foot.”

Get well soon Serena!
