Sadly, that headline is not an exaggeration.

And the daycare’s explanation for how this could have happened almost makes the story worse.

A gate must have blown open. That’s how employees at The Learning Experience in Mooresville say a group of six two-year-olds got out of a fenced in play area and wandered away. One woman called 911 when she saw those kids and told the dispatcher, “We’re driving down the road and all these little kids are out running in traffic and there’s no adult around!”

From the gate where the kids got out at The Learning Experience to the edge of Fairview Road it’s about the length of a football field give or take a few yards. There was one child actually on Fairview, one on the edge of Fairview, two on the side road, Legacy Village, and two others headed toward Fairview.

The Learning Experience regional director tells FOX that something like this has never happened at the facility but that they are investigating. As for Mooresville Police, they say they’ve been in touch with the Department of Health and Human Services and the day care has never had a complaint filed against it. For Captain Phil Blocker, the more pressing issue is one of common sense. He says, “The question I want answered is, where was the supervision?”

Meantime, parents are rallying behind the school. One mom tells us she’s started a petition of support. Lisa Dye of Troutman says, “I started the petition because I truly believe that it was not neglect on the teachers’ behalf, it’s was not neglect on the daycare’s behalf; stuff happens all the time.”

It’s not neglect on the teachers’ and daycare’s behalf??? She’s better than us.
