We hope these allegations aren’t true…

Though Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather has yet to personally address the allegation that he fired a bullet on February 27 that struck two men, Meriweather’s legal guardian disputes the claim. “It’s not true,” Tim Bridges told Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald.

Bridges specifically said there’s “no truth to the rumors” that Meriweather shot two men who have retained lawyer John Morgan. In fairness to both sides, it’s more than a rumor — it’s an allegation. Even if it ends up being false, two men claim, via Morgan, that Meriweather pulled the trigger.

“I’m sure the attorneys will handle whatever needs to be handled,” Bridges said. “‘Everything will come out if there’s anything to come out. But statements have been given by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department that Brandon Meriweather is not a victim, nor a person of interest in any shooting.“

Bridges is right. NESN.com reports that the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday that Meriweather “is not listed as a victim, suspect or witness” in any police report involving a shooting.

The lack of a criminal investigation doesn’t mean that it didn’t happen, or that the alleged victims can’t pursue relief in civil court. That’s precisely what the woman who has sued Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for rape in Nevada chose to do. Though the lack of a criminal complaint or prosecution could make the civil case substantially weaker, it won’t kill it.

Via Twitter, Rapoport reports that Bridges has said that Meriweather could pursue a defamation claim based on the false allegations.

Though the allegation originates with the alleged vicims, Meriweather likely would also target the lawyer. After all, he’s the one who went public with the contention — and he also presumably has the money to fund a settlement or a judgment.

Stay tuned. More developments surely will be coming.

UPDATE: The Patriots released a statement: “We are aware of the reported allegation, but do not have any additional information.”

If the allegations are indeed true, then the NFL needs to ban players from having guns or something. This sh*t is ridiculous.
