Anyone who’s ever attempted to beat a face has probably already learned that owning the most expensive makeup brushes and cosmetics doesn’t mean a thing if you have no idea how to use them. I first fell in love with makeup when I discovered my older sister’s MAC Lipglass in Chai. The color was coffee coated perfection in a 0.5 fl oz tube. This discovery led to a long adolescence filled with plenty of makeup mishaps. Let’s not forget silver lip gloss to match my silver eyeliner and finishing the whole look with a brown lip liner. What about the girl in class who used to fill in her eyebrows in with red pencil to match her burgundy micro braids in high school? That was me. And in hindsight the resulting look resembled Ronald McDonald more than Rihanna. Whenever people compliment my makeup, I am quick to remind them that any skill I may possess wasn’t without plenty of trial and error (and I have the pictures to prove it).

The thing about makeup is that learning what works for you can be a tedious process and while you should get points for creativity, that doesn’t mean everyone will be as inspired by your look as you are. What’s important is that you have fun, learn a little bit and like what YOU see in the mirror. Most of the errors are in the details and most of us makeup mavens have or will make them at some point. The important thing is that we are mindful of them.
