A small town in Missouri has been flooded by water from the Black River due to a breach in the levee protecting the town:

A levee protecting a southeast Missouri town from major flooding has breached and authorities are planning to evacuate residents from more homes in the area, a police official said Tuesday.

Poplar Bluff police Officer Daron House said water is pouring through a crack in the levee on a road southeast of Poplar Bluff and that crews are looking into a report of a possible second breach. According to deputy police chief Jeff Rolland, water is pouring through the opening at a rapid volume, but for the moment, it appears the congested town of Poplar Bluff will be spared the worst. The location of the opening — just south of County Road 607 — will likely push the water into the rural farmland of southern and eastern parts of Butler Country.

About 1,000 homes were evacuated Monday and some have been flooded by water from the Black River, which has poured over the levee in about 30 locations, officials said. Crews rescued 59 people in an hour-and-a-half late Monday after water spilled over a dam and inundated a section of the town of 17,000 residents, which sits 130 miles south of St. Louis.
