Things just keep looking worse and worse for Detroit. A study by the Detroit Regional Workforce Fund has found that 47 percent of the Motor City’s adults are functionally illiterate. Here are more stats: of the 200,000 Detroit residents that are illiterate, only half of them have high school diplomas or GEDs. That makes us wonder how the Hell they managed to get diplomas if they can’t read!!
Only 10 percent of the people that need adult literacy classes receive the help they need. So clearly everything starts in the schools. The study was conducted to figure out why there is such an unemployment issue in Detroit – the unemployment rate has been up to 50 percent at times. Well, there’s your answer. Even if there are new businesses in the city, they can’t employ anybody if most of the residents can’t fill out the applications.
