Joe The Plumber: Not A Tax Expert-Sam Stein

Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, a.k.a. “Joe the Plumber,” is the topic of the day on the campaign trail, in part because he held an impromptu press conference Thursday morning in front of his house to discuss tax policy, his disdain for Social Security, and his critiques of Barack Obama.

Already, however, there is some dispute as to whether or not Wurzelbacher was being accurate with his critique of Obama. His business, as ABC reports, would almost certainly get a tax cut under Obama’s plan, given that he does not expect to make anywhere close to $250,000 in profits.

Moreover, for someone worried about his taxes, Wurzelbacher doesn’t — it appears – always pay them. A filing with the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas shows that he has had state tax liens filed against him, meaning he was either delinquent or didn’t fully cover taxes that he owed.

A representative at the court explained that Wurzelbacher had not paid $1,182.98 of personal income tax. The state filed a lien on January 26, 2007, and the payment remains outstanding. But the court rep also cautioned that this all may have occurred without Wurzelbacher’s knowledge.

“We get hundreds of state liens every day and we don’t have to make a judgment on them. We are just putting in there what the state says is owed. We don’t notify that person and neither does the state. If there was activity on this lien, if they attempted to collect it on this case – which they haven’t — it would show up. But I am 99.9 percent positive that he doesn’t even know about this.”

Tax-issues aside, the “Joe-the-Plumber” fervor seems to be spreading beyond small town Ohio. On the streets of Manhattan this morning, a plumbing company car was spotted with a “Joe The Plumber For President” poster on its side.

But before Obama supporters fret about losing the plumber vote, it’s worth noting that the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters has endorsed the Illinois Democrat, in part because the union thinks he has the best economic agenda for its members.

“Obama will help us keep existing jobs and work to develop new, higher paying jobs here in America, reform our health care system, fix our ailing schools and make sure that the pensions of our retirees are safe,” the union said.

NEW YORK (AP)—Major League Baseball has agreed to push back the start time of a potential World Series Game 6 by eight minutes to allow Democrat Barack Obama to purchase a half-hour of air time on the Fox network.

Baseball spokesman Pat Courtney said Thursday that the game time would now be set for 8:35 p.m.

The Obama presidential campaign said Oct. 9 that it had bought the 8-8:30 p.m slot on CBS and NBC.

“Fox will accommodate Senator Obama’s desire to communicate with voters in this long-form format,” network spokesman Lou D’Ermilio said in a statement. “We are pleased that Major League Baseball has agreed to delay the first pitch of World Series Game 6 for a few minutes in order for Fox to carry his program on Oct. 29. If requested, the network would be willing to make similar time available to Senator McCain’s campaign.”

The World Series has not gone to a sixth game since 2003.

As a libertarian, here’s my take on the whole “JOE THE PLUMBER” debacle:

Couple things to keep in mind: 1) I’m not an economist. 2) Talking about wanting to buy a business that makes $250k is usually a (minimally) a 2-1 or a 4-1 investment meaning that if it’s worth $250k, you’d pay $500k to over a million for the business, if not more. This is not a subtle point and perhaps an business entrepreneur here can further elaborate on these concepts.

If the plumbing business has infrastructure capital like trucks and a working staff, a ‘storefront’ office, etc, that cost is likely to be much much higher so then we start talking about this guy paying upwards of at least $3mill or even more for this business. He states that Obama’s plan would prevent him buying the business but the difference in taxes (from what I understand) goes from 36% (under $250k) to 39% (over $250k) so is 3% really a deal-breaker? Plus there’s the notion of what exactly is going to be taxed. Are we talking gross profits? Health benefits paid to employees? There’s so much more involved then just thinking, here’s this guy who makes less than $250k as a plumber, who wants to save/invest and buy the company he works for which is supposedly a private firm valued at $250,000 (the ‘magic’ number). Again, it is far more than just a couple numbers that go into calculating whether or not he would be adversely affected by Obama’s tax plan. Or McCain’s for that matter.

Like taxing people according to their station, we need to tax business according to it’s station. Small business? Small taxes. Big business? BIG taxes.

All each candidate talks about is how much money the Fed will lend to bailout the economy…each dollar they lend to Wall Street, Airlines, Isurance Companies and banks are basically a lein place on an entity that can never be paid back…How in the world can you lend a financially strapped company like AIG $80 Bill at 11% interest and expect it to be paid back in two years…WTF?!?

Criminalizing Natural Health, Vitamins, and Herbs

The Codex Alimentarius is a threat to the freedom of people to choose natural healing and alternative medicine and nutrition. Ratified by the World Health Organization, and going into Law in the United States in 2009, the threat to health freedom has never been greater.

The Codex Alimentarius Commission was created in 1963 by the Food and Agricultural Organization and the World Health Organization, both official groups within the United Nations

The Food and Drug Administration says vitamins, supplements, herbs and other natural substances, including water when it is used to “treat” dehydration, should be classified as drugs, and opponents have only until April 30 to express their concern about the proposals under Docket No. 2006D-0480.

The government agency under the direction of Andrew C. von Eschenbach, who became commissioner in 2006, also has put its “Complementary and Alternative Medicine Products and Their Regulation by the Food and Drug Administration” on a fast track for implementation.

This move by the FDA is designed to once and for all destroy the 1994 DSHEA law that has made supplements ‘legal’ while eliminating nutritional supplements and natural medicine from the United States, ensuring monopoly profits and control by drug companies and the FDA.

FDA to allow food producers to irradiate spinach, lettuce

The Food and Drug Administration has approved use of irradiation on spinach and lettuce to kill dangerous bacteria, but companies may have a tough time selling the idea to consumers.

The FDA’s decision, effective today, adds iceberg lettuce and spinach to the short but growing list of foods approved for irradiation, including meat, poultry and some shellfish.

While a handful of companies have succeeded in selling irradiated ground beef since it hit the market in 2000, the idea has largely flopped. “Mom wouldn’t buy it,” says Craig Wilson, food-safety chief for Costco.

Like pasteurization of milk and pressure cooking of canned foods, treating food with ionizing radiation can kill bacteria such as E. coli. NASA gives irradiated food to astronauts, and the technology, which kills bacteria by altering its DNA, was first used in the U.S. in 1964 to extend the shelf life of white potatoes.

Based on available data, the FDA said Thursday that irradiation done correctly and at approved levels would reduce or eliminate bacteria without altering the nutritional value of the greens or harming consumers.

Opponents say more testing is needed and that the FDA could better enhance food safety by policing foodmakers more. The consumer group Food & Water Watch called irradiation an “impractical, ineffective and very expensive gimmick” that may ruin flavor, texture and nutritional value.

The FDA’s ruling resulted from a petition filed in 2000 by a food-manufacturing association asking the FDA to approve irradiation for a broad array of foods. In 2007, the petition was amended so that the leafy greens could be ruled on first.

The year before, bagged spinach was associated with an E. coli outbreak that killed five people, sickened more than 200, and pummeled bagged salad sales. The outbreak underscored the inherent risk of eating raw food that’s grown outside, where animals can spread bacteria.

The steady pace of food-safety scares since then — and growing consumer awareness of food-safety risks — will improve consumer acceptance of irradiated greens, says Doug Powell of the International Food Safety Network at Kansas State University.

“There’s been enough outbreaks … that the consumer demand should be there,” he says.

Processors of leafy greens have long considered irradiation promising, but they’ve struggled to find the right dose that kills bacteria while preserving freshness.

“Historically, the fragility of the (leafy greens) has been a quality issue,” Dole spokesman Bill Goldfield says. Based on Dole’s testing, “It looks to be very promising.”

The FDA will require irradiated produce to be labeled.

“There would be no need for the irradiation if the USDA and Government stopped allowing the use of RAW SEWAGE as fertilizer for conventional produce. The USDA and FDA CREATED have CREATED the Ecoli and Salmonella problems themselves and are trying to fix it by “sterilizing” the food industry, which will have massive health implications. If you think the health of America is bad NOW, it would get incredibly worse if this is done.

Of course, the FDA says the irradiated food isn’t altered by the radiation. This statement is an insult to the intelligence of anyone with a pulse. Why? Because if the radiation doesn’t alter anything, then how can it kill E.Coli and Salmonella?

The whole point of the radiation is to kill living organisms. And it works by causing fatal damage to the tissues and DNA of those microorganisms. So guess what it does to the plants? Since RADIATION isn’t SELECTIVE, it also irradiates the plant fibers and tissues, causing DNA damage and the destruction of enzymes and phytochemicals.

Amazingly, the FDA claims this does not count as “altering” the food because these changes aren’t “visible”.

If it weren’t such a nutritional atrocity, it would be downright hilarious. DNA changes are not visible to the human eye, but they can result in serious health consequences. Just ask anyone born with two Y chromosomes.

Eat up, guinea pigs!

Of course, the radiation pushers will claim that nobody really knows whether irradiating the food kills just 1% of the phytochemicals or 99% (or something in between). And they don’t know what the long-term effect is on human health, either. This is exactly my point: The irradiation of fresh produce is a dangerous experiment, and we’ve all been involuntarily recruited as guinea pigs.

I will be curious to see a serious scientific inquiry into the nutritional damage caused to fresh produce by irradiation. I also find it simply astonishing that this decision by the FDA has been made in the absence of such scientific studies. Much like it does with the pharmaceutical industry, the FDA prefers to poison the people first, and then figure out later just how much damage might have been caused.

I say when you’re dealing with the food supply, you should err on the side of caution. We are talking about the health of the nation here. This is not a small matter. It should be treated with extreme caution, skepticism and scientific scrutiny. Instead, it is being addressed with a gung-ho attitude framed in mind games and enforced ignorance.

In other words, rather than figuring out whether food irradiation is actually safe, the FDA would rather simply pretend it is.
