R.I.P.: Levi Stubbs

Posted by Bossip Staff

The legendary group Four Tops lost an original member today:

Four Tops lead singer Levi Stubbs, who possessed one of the most dynamic and emotive voices of all the Motown singers, died Friday at 72. He had been ill recently and died in his sleep at the Detroit house he shared with his wife, said Dana Meah, the wife of a grandson. The Wayne County medical examiner’s office also confirmed the death. With Stubbs in the lead, the Four Tops sold millions of records, including such hits as “Baby I Need Your Loving,” “Reach Out (I’ll Be There)” and “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch).” The group performed for more than four decades without a change in personnel. Stubbs’ death leaves one surviving member of the original group: Abdul “Duke” Fakir. Stubbs “fits right up there with all the icons of Motown,” said Audley Smith, chief operating officer of the Motown Historical Museum. “His voice was as unique as Marvin’s or as Smokey’s or as Stevie’s.”

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

It’s a shame how a brother that lived that long just missed seeing the first Black President. His voice was strong and would drive through your soul. Groups like the Four Tops, the Supremes and the Temptations etc. that made good music colorless. How much could you hate black people if they made your favorite songs. Rest in peace to one of the all time greats in music.

We are truly loosing our musical greats. No one can replace Levi as lead of one of the greatest groups around. I’m so glad I grew up during this era and experienced the true sounds of soulful music. Decades later people can still appreciate it.

RIP, Levi. We’ll miss you brother.

One of the finest voices in music history. One could only have wondered the career he would have had if he had gone solo. You have to admire the man for staying with the Tops for so many years. R.I.P Levi. You were indeed a Legend.

R.I.P most def to a legend. People tend to think that the legends are only those popular names that we all know but not at all. The Four Tops are completely under-rated. The are cl*****ics and R.I.P to him because his voice was amazing.

I heard about Levi today as I was driving home. I want to give my condolences to his family and let them know that they are in my prayers. I first heard the 4 tops singing “baby i need your lovin” when I was 8 years on a antique radio in my home and decided that this group would be my favorite Motown group and that Levi would be my favorite singer of all time. I saw them at the Metro airport in Detroit before Benson p*****ed and I breifly talked to them but they were in a hurry to catch their flight. I have possibly every recording that they have ever done even the previously unreleased stuff. I am trying keep myself together while I am writing this and playing some of their music. I am a professional musician now and my love for music and ability to play complicated things I owe partly to many hours and days of playing Motown songs and mostly stuff from the 4 tops. Every Fridy night after school I would practice the most from 4 to 8 hours. I am going to miss Levi as an admirer of a musical icon that really did not get his props totally as one of the best lead vocalist of our time.

  25. What's Goin On

My thoughts and prayers goes out to the Stubbs family, Four Tops, Motown family, friends and family of the late, great Levi Stubbs of the Four Tops. He was always so cool, and cl*****y with his voice, and dance steps. May he rest in peace, and he will be missed. There is only one orignal top left: Duke Fakir. May God bless Duke to carry forth the Four Tops’ music and legacy.

I know Samuel Jackson is going to sleep a little easier tonight. Y’all thought he was going to be the third one to go after Isaac Hayes and Bernie Mac. Man, old age is a *****. Toward the end of his life, Levi looked nothing like himself.

(You haters don’t get on me for having a sense of humor about this.)

  27. tee and ay

He’s a little before my time but just to remain in one group that long is a testament to character. I also know brothers like him and the three tops probably endured plenty bull**** on their way to musical success, including racism and scheisters shortchanging them on the back end of record deals. Nonetheless, he will be remembered as one of the best.

What’s up, is there anybody else here?
If there’s anyone else here, let me know.
Oh, and yes I’m a real person LOL.

    See ya,
