Hudson’s nephew reported missing

CHICAGO (WLS) — The mother of singer and Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson was one of two people found shot to death inside a home Friday.

Police have confirmed Hudson’s mother, Darnell Hudson Donerson, is one of the deceased. The home where the bodies were discovered is at 7019 S. Yale in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood. Property records indicate the home belongs to Donerson.

The other victim has been identified as Jennifer Hudson’s brother Jason Hudson.

A search is under way for a young boy who is missing from the home. A child, possibly Jennifer Hudson’s 7-year-old nephew, Julian King, is missing, according to sources. Police are searching for an SUV that was seen in the area, a 1994 white Suburban, Illinois license plate number X584859.

I haven’t read anything that says Jennifer’s mother was killed. Apparently two of Jennifer’s relatives were found dead in HER MOTHER’S HOUSE. And a 7 year relative and a 1994 Suburban are missing.

Former Knicks coach Isiah Thomas was taken to the hospital early this morning because he overdosed on sleeping pills at his Westchester home, authorities said.

When reached on his cell phone today, Thomas, 47, denied those claims and inexplicably insisted that it was his 17-year-old daughter Lauren who was the one having an issue but it “wasn’t an overdose.”

“My daughter is very down right now. None of us are OK,” he told The Post.

Thomas said there was an “incident” that occurred Thursday at Rye Country Day school – where the 6-foot tall senior also plays hoops.” He oddly wouldn’t be more specific and told a reporter to call the school to see if they would give details.

Harrison police, however, confirmed it was Thomas who was the one taken to White Plains Hospital Center after cops and an ambulance were summoned to his Purchase home after midnight following a 911 call.

Barry Watkins, a spokesman for Madison Square Garden, declined to comment, only to say, “Isiah is fine.”

He said the incident was a family matter, without elaborating.

Thomas bought a home in the quiet and upscale enclave – about 30 miles from Manhattan – four years ago for a whopping $4.075 million.

In 2006, the NBA legend’s reputation hit the skids when Anucha Browne Sanders, a team executive, filed a sexual harrassment suit against him and The Garden.

A Manhattan jury ruled in October 2007 that Thomas had sexually-harrassed Sanders and ordered The Garden to pay her $11.6 million.

Thomas, who was fired as Knicks president and coach last April 18, remains employed by the team as a consultant and scout.

During the four seasons Thomas was at then helm, the Knicks never won more than 33 games. He was 56-108 in two seasons as head coach.

I don’t think the killer’s occupation has anything to do with this. Crazy is crazy, whether the person is educated/skilled or not. This person has a very ill mind and soul to kill TWO people in cold blood and kidnap an innocent child. I personally know educated people who are completely off their square and I also know people who are uneducated and have the biggest heart imaginable. It goes both ways.

Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson considered her mother’s Chicago home a haven, a place where she could find respite from Hollywood’s occasionally brutal and superficial ways.

That South Side sanctuary, however, was violently shattered Friday when her mother and brother were gunned down during a domestic disturbance, law-enforcement officials said.

The actress’ 7-year-old nephew, Julian King, remained missing today and there was still an Amber Alert out on the child. A suspect in the slayings was believed to have abducted the boy, but when the man was arrested Friday night the boy was not with him.

Police said today that no charges have been filed.

“I just can’t fathom something like this happening,” said Ethel Grisom, a longtime family friend. “The entire family were just real friendly people who enjoyed being together. This is going to be devastating for them.”

About 3 p.m., a relative found Darnell Donerson, 57, fatally shot in her living room, law enforcement officials said. The family member notified authorities, who then found Jason Hudson, 29, dead in a bedroom.

Neighbors reported hearing gunshots about 9 a.m. There were no signs of forced entry to the home.

Donerson and Jason Hudson had both been shot, authorities said. Police said at least one of the victims had suffered defensive wounds.

A law-enforcement source said police had a suspect in custody but still had not located the boy. Julian (right) is described as 4-foot-11 and weighing 130 pounds. He has brown eyes and black hair and was last seen wearing a striped polo shirt and khaki pants.

The actress’ sister, Julia, reported the boy missing from the home Friday afternoon, a police source said. Family friends said the boy was her son, but police did not confirm that. The MySpace pages for Julia Hudson and the suspect say they are married and that Julian is her son.

The Tribune is not naming the suspect because he has not been charged. Public records list one of his last known addresses as Donerson’s home in the 7000 block of South Yale Avenue. Police said the man had a personal relationship with a member of the family, but did not elaborate.

Cook County court records show the suspect pleaded guilty in 1999 to attempted murder and vehicular hijacking. He also was convicted in a 1998 case of possession of a stolen motor vehicle, records show.

The man was released from the Illinois River Correctional Center in Downstate Canton in May 2006 after serving 7 years in prison. He is still on probation, state records show.

On Friday afternoon, scores of onlookers flocked to the corner nearest the Hudson home. They pressed up against yellow police tape for a glimpse of the white house three doors down. Evidence technicians and police officers came and went, and the house’s lights stayed on as the sky grew darker and rain squalls scattered the dwindling crowd.

Many neighbors’ thoughts turned to Jennifer Hudson, who returned home to visit her mother as often as twice a month if her schedule allowed. A 1999 graduate of the Dunbar Vocational Career Academy, Hudson could walk through the Englewood neighborhood without anyone hassling her or following her with a camera.

“She never had no problems with fans stalking her,” neighbor Vanessa Stanton said. “She didn’t even need a bodyguard [though she did have one]. The whole neighborhood block would look out for her.”

Hudson famously left her Burger King job to compete in the 2004 season of “American Idol.” She finished seventh and endured harsh words from judge Simon Cowell, but her powerful, five-octave range helped win her the role of Effie White in the musical “Dreamgirls.”

Her showstopping on-screen rendition of “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going” led to widespread critical praise and the 2007 Academy Award for best supporting actress.

Upon winning the Oscar, she became emotional as she thanked her mother for traveling to Los Angeles to celebrate the nomination. Since then, her family and their large white home have been her foundation and could pull her back to Earth should her sense of self-importance skyrocket.

“My faith in God and my family — they’re very realistic and very normal, they’re not into the whole limelight kind of thing, so when I go home to Chicago that’s just another place that’s home,” she recently told the Associated Press. “I stand in line with everybody else, or, when I go home to my mom, I’m just Jennifer, [so she says], ‘You get up and you take care of your own stuff.’ And I love that; I don’t like when people tell you everything you want to hear. I want to hear the truth, you know what I mean?”

Donerson mostly kept out of the spotlight. When asked if she’d like to attend a recent taping of Oprah Winfrey’s show, on which Hudson would be publicizing “The Secret Life of Bees,” Donerson declined.

“She doesn’t welcome the attention at all,” Hudson recently told Australia’s Sunday Telegraph. “She’s the complete opposite of those stage mothers who say, ‘Oh, that’s my daughter, aren’t I great?’ She doesn’t want the attention, while at the same time she’s extremely proud and happy for me.”

Jennifer Hudson was in the Tampa area at the time of the slayings and planned to immediately head to Chicago. Her sister, Julia, met police at Wentworth Area headquarters late Friday.

CHICAGO, Oct. 24 (UPI) — Four-hundred, twenty-six homicides have been reported in Chicago so far in 2008, more than in either New York or Los Angeles.

Chicago could be record more than 500 homicides by the end of the year, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

New York, with a population of almost 8.3 million compared to Chicago’s 2.8 million, has reported 417 homicides. Los Angeles, with 3.8 million people, has had 302.

The number of homicides in Chicago peaked at around 700 in 1998 before a dramatic decline. In recent years, the number has gone up again in many major cities, and faster in Chicago than in New York.

Police Superintendent Jody Weis, testifying before the city council Friday, promised to change assignments and beats, moving police to areas where they are most needed.

“They haven’t been moved around since 1978. That’s three decades of people making empty promises,” Weis said. “Nothing against my predecessors, but at some time, you’ve got to look at a problem and say, ‘I know I can’t make every one of the 50 aldermen happy, but we have to make sure we have the right resources in the right locations.’”

In her profile, Julia, 31, listed her No. 1 best friend as her mom, her second as “William” and her third as Jennifer. She also said her mom is the person she most admires while “William” was “most likely” to get arrested.

Chicago Police issued an alert identifying William Balfour as a suspect hours after the slayings of Hudson’s mother, Darnell Donerson, and her brother, Jason Hudson.

The alert said Balfour might be driving a white 1994 Chevrolet Suburban SUV with Illinois license plate X584859. The alert also said Donerson’s 7-year-old grandson, Julian King, could be with Balfour.

Balfour was arrested later Friday after police tracked his whereabouts around the city, law enforcement sources told the Sun-Times.

Balfour still had not been charged with any crime late Friday.

“I’m not going to let them put my son down,” said Balfour’s mother, Michele Davis Balfour.

“My son had nothing to do with this . . . and I’m very upset with the police because they are refusing to let me see my son.”

Michele Davis Balfour made a public plea to reporters at the Area 1 police station for the return of 7-year-old Julian King.

“Please, I’m begging you to return [him],” she said.

Police think William Balfour was at the Donerson family home around 9 a.m. Friday, the time neighbors reported hearing gunshots, a source said. Police were then able to track him to the Near Southwest Side, where he was arrested, the source said.

William Balfour, 27, was paroled in 2006 after convictions for attempted murder, vehicular hijacking and receiving stolen property, state records show.

And as the news article stated, she does say the suspect in custody now is the one she thinks is the “most likely to be arrested.”

I don’t know, and this is my last comment on this, but is it unusual that the day after your mother and brother are brutally murdered, and your son — your only child — is missing that you would log onto your MySpace page?

I hope that it is also a wake up call to black people to STOP coddling mentally ill relatives and shrugging off their behavior and threats with “he’s trippin” and “she’s trippin”.

Wow, I’m sorry about your daughter’s situation — it sounds very unhealthy. I think the children are the biggest victims in these types of scenarios. I’ve read some horrific stories about what can happen to kids whose mothers are involved with dangerous men. It’s one thing if you’re a woman with no kids who decides to put herself in potentially perilous situation, but it’s quite another situation if you’re a mother and you make that sort of fateful decision. It’s not worth it — not for sex, not for companionship, not for anything, IMHO.
