Atheist Group Sues To Have "World Trade Center Cross" Removed From 9/11 Memorial Center

People just have to find a reason to start sh*t, don’t they?

During the early search and recovery days following the 9/11 attacks, rescue workers found these two beams from the World Trade Center which somehow in the process of all that destruction formed the shape of a cross. So naturally, when they started planning and building the September 11 Memorial Center and Museum in New York, the people in charge of such decisions decided to include the “World Trade Center Cross.”

Now some Jesus haters are crying foul and suing.

The “government enshrinement of the cross was an impermissible mingling of church and state,” the American Atheists say in a press statement.

The group says it filed the lawsuit this week in state court in New York and posted a copy of the lawsuit on its website.

The lawsuit names many defendants, including the state of New Jersey, the city of New York , New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

The World Trade Center cross, two intersecting steel beams that held up when the twin towers collapsed on September 11, 2001, is seen as iconic to some.

The cross was moved Saturday from near a church to its new home at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. There was also ceremonial blessing of the cross in a service led by Father Brian Jordan, a Franciscan monk who ministered to workers clearing the area after the 9/11 attacks.

Joe Daniels, 9/11 Memorial president, said Saturday that the cross is “an important part of our commitment to bring back the authentic physical reminders that tell the history of 9/11 in a way nothing else could.

“Its return is a symbol of the progress on the Memorial & Museum that we feel rather than see, reminding us that commemoration is at the heart of our mission.”

But the atheist group says the cross sends a symbol of something different.

“The WTC cross has become a Christian icon,” said Dave Silverman, president of the atheist group. “It has been blessed by so-called holy men and presented as a reminder that their god, who couldn’t be bothered to stop the Muslim terrorists or prevent 3,000 people from being killed in his name, cared only enough to bestow upon us some rubble that resembles a cross. It’s a truly ridiculous assertion.”

SMH. So because you don’t believe, you’re not only going to deny the people who do believe the right to do what they do, but you’re going to insult their belief on GP?

If that isn’t hate, we don’t know what is.

How come people who are atheist get so angry when they see images of God…as a person who doesn’t align myself with any religion but has a strong belief in a higher power I don’t mad when some of my atheist peers go into the million of reasons why God or such higher power is not real I brush it off and continue believe in what I believe in while most atheist start going ham the moment they see the word God….point blank IMHO if u don’t believe in God then that’s your choice…the word God on a dollar bill doesn’t threaten any of your daily activities, nor does it force you to believe in something u don’t want to….we have to share this space with each other Muslims Jews Christians and atheist…just as a bumper sticker on a back of car saying God is a lie doesn’t incite rage in me a cross shouldn’t enrage you just keep it moving and hold continue on with your beliefs like the rest of us

  • Asia

Seriously some people will find anything to be heard or found relevent. For all the non believers coodles to you babylon but stop forcing it…its real petty.

  • Niasia

Well Christians weren’t the only faith of the people who died. Let’s have a religious relic for every religion, not just Christianity.

  • AmazinAtheist

Why would they want to symbolize a torture device on ground zero is beyond me. From what I have read from other articles on this situation is that they feel everyone should be able to place their religious symbols in the same area. You really think they are going to let muslims Place their symbols there? It would be a sh!tstorm if they did. I read about this a few days ago and that is basically what it’s about. If you let one belief system do it, you have to let them all do it or it will be deemed unconstitutional.

    “Jesus haters”?…

To place to cross at the memorial site, even though it is material from the building, could be seen as alienating some other (non)believers. It’s almost aligned with the argument of not putting up the mosque nearby. This could be deemed as a “strike” in the inner-war taking place in America of Islam VS. Christianity.

As previously stated, Christians weren’t the only ones who lost their lives or loved ones tha day. Either refrain from putting any religious insignia on the site so as not to attract negative attention or put something representative of each religion.

It may be the most inclusive to no include any at all, especially when you consider where the attack occurred. NYC is the epitome of melting pot in America. All walks of life live there. Juat as no one should one want to push their (lack of) religion on anyone, the same should stand in this situation.
To not include the cross does not take away from the religious relationship you may choose to nurture.

  • AmazinAtheist

@ Kazi, couldn’t have said it better. Somehow they did not give the whole story. The same point that you brought up is the same reason why the american atheist are suing. I think they are pretty much wasting their time suing over this issue. In the end the fundies are not going give in on this. Just look at the backlash over the ground zero mosque last year.

  • New new

You act like they built a cross to put there, it’s a surviving piece of the building. Why not put it up. It’s not the same as the mosque because alot of ppl felt disrespected that they would put up a symbol of the religion that did the attack. Ppl are always so fast to criticize and attack christianity but are so sensitive to muslims. Yet you complain about treating each other fairly.

  • AmazinAtheist

Muslims were killed during 9/11 too, so they can’t have their symbol placed there just because the attackers were muslim also? I’m sure christians were placing their little crosses around the OKC building even though the perp was christian. And the whole ground zero fiasco just showed how ignorant these religious folks can be. Last time i checked, America is not a christian only nation. That’s how you people act though.

  • Jesse

    Why are people so hateable?

  • Jesse

Maybe the rich and powerful have already learned that There are no solutions for any of the worlds issues. Get yours now (if you can).

  • shame

The point of putting this up is that it was left over from the WT centers, it doesn’t have anythng to do with religions…ppl are so damn sensitive

  • Q

Couldn’t have said it better kazi. But it angers me when people blame all of Islam for what happened that day. Muslims died that day as well. There comes a time when people have to realise that all shouldn’t be condemned for what a few out of millions of did. I mean I don’t go round blaming every american, brit and any other country at war in Afghanistan n Iraq for all the innocent the soldiers are “accidentally” killing there. If they’re putting up that cross because its a part of the building go right ahead. But its double standards when there was such a fuss made over a mosque blocks away IJS

  • gina

Every head shall bow and every knee shall bow down! I FEAR AND WORSHIP GOD WHILE YOU CAN!

  • Westside cutie!!!!

    Well said @ Gina!!!!!

  • homicidalbrainiac

Well, since I’m late to the party and Amazing, Kazi, and Q have eloquently stated most of the arguements I support, I would just like to say that I would try tiger meat…
