For Discussion: Should The People Behind Sesame Street Let Bert And Ernie Make Honest Men Of Each Other??

Should Bert And Ernie Get Married??

Now that same-sex marriage is legal in the state of New York, where Sesame Street is, a petition has appeared online asking that Bert and Ernie be allowed to experience matrimonial bliss.

You know we’ve all always believed Bert and Ernie were gay anyway. In the late 90s, there was even a rumor that with more kids growing up with same-sex parents, the Children’s Workshop folks would bring Bert and Ernie out of the closet.

But that has yet to happen… and it probably never will. Because this is what the Children’s Workshop has always had to say about those gay Bert & Ernie rumors:

Bert and Ernie, who’ve been on Sesame Street for 25 years, do not portray a gay couple, and there are no plans for them to do so in the future. They are puppets, not humans. Like all the Muppets created for Sesame Street, they were designed to help educate preschoolers. Bert and Ernie are characters who help demonstrate to children that despite their differences, they can be good friends.

Still, the people who want to see a Bert & Ernie wedding think there’s a valuable teaching opportunity there too…

I think it would be wonderful if they did! There is so much hatred in the world 2day! I think its important 2 teach kids early the importance of loving and respecting everyone regardless of how U like their lifestyle! It’s just that… “their lifestyle”, and not yours! Mind your own damn business!

I am sooooooo disgusted that this is even up for discussion, the original purpose of this show was to teach CHILDREN academics not about life/life styles…I feel we should shelter our children from all things regarding adult life styles including homosexuality… what would be the reason to make bert and ernie gay?? Personally I feel that homosexuals just want everybody to except they’re life styles including yung children which if u are an adult that’s fine, what u choose to love is your business but ill be damned if my nieces or nephews will be exposed to alternative life styles or any kind of adult life style before they old enough to know what’s goin on, I have nothing against homosexuals But it I feel we should let children be children (innocent and pure) when they are of age whatever they are attracted to naturally they will figure out on their own but exposing them to homosexuality on a childrens shows will send a the wrong message and peek curiosity in young children that should not be at this stage in their life

I’m sure by now, everyone knows my stance on gay rights/marriage (totally for, str8 against h8 all the way). I’m on the fence on this one. As far as I know, none of the puppets on the show have romantic relationships so why make the exception for Bert and Ernie? On the other hand, having them “come out” ,so to speak, would put homosexual relationships in a comfortable, easy to understand light for children and potentially open up a dialog for parents that may find it difficult to explain to their children. My little boy is 4 and we’ve taught him that some boys want to marry girls and some boys would like to marry other boys (and vice versa). He gets it on that basic level so there’s no need to go into detail until he’s older…

Wow my childhood I ruined I thought they are best friends or brothers. Wtf were they gay all along ?!?!
Noo kids should learn how to read b4 they learn about sexuality. Let them be friends not lovers that’s gonna make evrything complicated. Sexuality is nothing a child should be learning about its too early all thet are gnna see is 2 males holding hand they are too young to comprehend the message.
Yu already ruined it by making a freaking veggie monster and havin oscar all nice and shit!!!!

I always thought they were brothers…..

I don’t think they should be a part of any unnecessary controversy. Its a kids show and it should remain an innocent kid’s show

I thought they wa just friends when I was a git, but when I got older and heard all the jokes I figured them gay. The gay agenda really is taking it to far. What?s next Count D!ckula. One D!ck two d!cks three d!cks, yah yah yah, three d!cks! Seriously, let the kids be kids without the extra chit. Y?all already turned out Spiderman, d@mn.

Whoopi goldberg said it best. Don’t you have to have genitalia to be either gay or straight???? These are puppets, meant to entertain toddlers.

It is one thing if consenting adults choose to be homosexual and live that way, but I think that it is wrong for this society to try to push this gay agenda down children’s throats.I hope that Sesame Street never bring that gay mess onto their show, children should have the right to continue being educated and receive entertainment by viewing Sesame Street’s traditional educational format.
