Now that same-sex marriage is legal in the state of New York, where Sesame Street is, a petition has appeared online asking that Bert and Ernie be allowed to experience matrimonial bliss.
You know we’ve all always believed Bert and Ernie were gay anyway. In the late 90s, there was even a rumor that with more kids growing up with same-sex parents, the Children’s Workshop folks would bring Bert and Ernie out of the closet.
But that has yet to happen… and it probably never will. Because this is what the Children’s Workshop has always had to say about those gay Bert & Ernie rumors:
Bert and Ernie, who’ve been on Sesame Street for 25 years, do not portray a gay couple, and there are no plans for them to do so in the future. They are puppets, not humans. Like all the Muppets created for Sesame Street, they were designed to help educate preschoolers. Bert and Ernie are characters who help demonstrate to children that despite their differences, they can be good friends.
Still, the people who want to see a Bert & Ernie wedding think there’s a valuable teaching opportunity there too…
