A Day Late and A Milli Short for ABC

ABC missed out on a million dollar payday to air Obama’s commercial according to Livesteez:

A half-hour Barack Obama campaign ad will blanket the major broadcast networks Wednesday night – except for ABC. ABC tried to reach an agreement with the Obama campaign to air the commercial on a different night in an attempt to protect its struggling Wednesday lineup, according to people familiar with the discussions who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly. ABC had a change of heart, but by the time it decided to make the 8 p.m. EDT Wednesday slot available for the Democratic presidential candidate’s spot, his campaign had already finalized the ad buy, the source said. ABC will air an episode of the hourlong “Pushing Daisies” at that time as scheduled, according to The Associated Press. The Obama campaign bought time on CBS, NBC and Fox for $1 million per network. In Fox’s case, the ad will precede the resumption of rain-suspended Game 5 of the World Series in Philadelphia. Fox decided to pre-empt its World Series pre-game show for the Obama spot and will start its baseball coverage after the commercial’s 8:30 p.m. conclusion. The 30-minute spot, which was announced in early October, will air six days before the election between Obama and Republican candidate John McCain. It is also scheduled to run on Univision, BET, MSNBC and TV One.

If there is one thing that television networks can count on, it’s that America will be watching Barack Obama. We really wish we could have been there when they were deciding between airing Obama’s commercial or showing “Pushing Dasies.” SMH

  • Chris

I can’t wait to see this. Witnessing history is quite the experience.

  • Sydney

Hi, Chris, did you hear about this quote today from Obama? It made me chuckle.

He also had a word to say here about socialism, communism and his time in kindergarten, dismissing McCain’s efforts to label him a socialist.

“Lately, he calls me a socialist for wanting to roll back the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans so we can finally give tax relief to the middle class,” Obama said.

“I don’t know, by the end of the week he’ll be accusing me of being a secret communist because I shared my toys in kindergarten. I shared my peanut butter and jelly sandwich.”

  • 2cute4u

I will be glad when the election is over and Obama claims victory over “McStank”!

  • FoxxyBriMax

Thats what they get. Oh well I already voted and My President Is Black!!

  • Dyma

I’m not even American and i’m biting my nails over the potential outcome!

  • Chris

    @Sydney

I hadn’t heard that one. It is too true though. This whole socialism and communism thing is a problem. I hate how they are turning this into a red scare issue. Talk about archaic issues.

    How have you been Sydney?

  • DA TRUFF!!! The Truth Will Set You Free!!! (Thugs, gangbangers, pimps, criminals & the women who support them are killing our communities)

THIS IS THE MOST EPIC AND HISTORIC ELECTION EVER!!!

  • Sydney

    @Chris

    I’m fine, how are you?

Six more days until Election Day, can you believe it?

  • Chris

    Syd,

I’m tired. I’ve been busy with work and school.

Yea, the election is coming soon. I wonder what the world will be like 1 week from today.

  • Sydney

You work and go to law school, Chris? Yes, that sounds like a very heavy load. I hope you can get some rest soon.

BTW, there are so many inspiring stories connected with this election, and I came across this article today in the Austin, TX paper. This woman is the 109-year-old daughter of a slave, and she voted for Obama:

Amanda Jones, 109, the daughter of a man born into slavery, has lived a life long enough to touch three centuries. And after voting consistently as a Democrat for 70 years, she has voted early for the country’s first black presidential nominee.

The middle child of 13, Jones, who is African American, is part of a family that has lived in Republican-leaning Bastrop County for five generations. The family has remained a fixture in Cedar Creek and other parts of the county, even when its members had to eat at segregated barbecue dives and walk through the back door while white customers walked through the front, said Amanda Jones’ 68-year-old daughter, Joyce Jones.

For at least a decade, Amanda Jones worked as a maid for $20 a month, Joyce Jones said. She was a housewife for 72 years and helped her now-deceased husband, C.L. Jones, manage a store.

Amanda Jones, a delicate, thin woman wearing golden-rimmed glasses, giggled as the family discussed this year’s presidential election. She is too weak to go the polls, so two of her 10 children — Eloise Baker, 75, and Joyce Jones — helped her fill out a mail-in ballot for Barack Obama, Baker said. “I feel good about voting for him,” Amanda Jones said.

  • 2morrow Might Come

Why would his commercials play on BET that is so foolish of him to do. He’s waisting money on BLACK channels like every black person isn’t voting for him already. I know some won’t but that is absurd. I always thought he was crazy.

ALL MY BLACK MCCAIN SUPPORTERS PUT Yo’ HANDS UPP!!

    HEY YOU!!!

THAT’S A GREAT STORY ABOUT THE OLD LADY!!! CAN YOU IMAGINE ALL THE THINGS SHE HAS SEEN!!!

MY PARENTS WERE TEENS IN THE 60′S AND SOME OF THE STUFF THEY HAVE TOLD TO US STILL BLOWS MY MIND!

WHEN YOU SEE HISTORY ON PBS IT IS AMAZING…, BUT WHEN YOUR PARENTS & GRANDPARENTS TELL YOU OF THE SAME TYPE OF THINGS THAT HAPENED TO THEM.., IN YOUR HOMETOWN.

    WOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

  • Sydney

Hey, Truff! Isn’t that story wonderful? I think this same woman has been on CNN, and she’s adorable. She was so happy to vote in this election.

I’m tired, so I’m going to log off, but have a good night!

  • 2cute4u

Get ready for those long voting lines if you didn’t vote early. Do bring your patience.

  • Chris

That’s a wonderful story. Sometimes it is easy to forget that slavery truly was not that long ago. The 4th will be a big day, but the 5th has my attention.

  • Sydney

One last post before I go — from the AP. If you haven’t voted, please do:

WASHINGTON – Barack Obama has pulled ahead in enough states to win the 270 electoral votes he needs to gain the White House — and with states to spare — according to an Associated Press analysis that shows he is now moving beyond typical Democratic territory to challenge John McCain on historically GOP turf.

Even if McCain sweeps the six states that are too close to call, he still seemingly won’t have enough votes to prevail, according to the analysis, which is based on polls, the candidates’ TV spending patterns and interviews with Democratic and Republican strategists. McCain does have a path to victory but it’s a steep climb: He needs a sudden shift in voter sentiment that gives him all six toss-up states plus one or two others that now lean toward Obama.

Obama has 23 states and the District of Columbia, offering 286 votes, in his column or leaning his way, while Republican McCain has 21 states with 163 votes. A half dozen offering 89 votes — Florida, Indiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Nevada and Ohio — remain up for grabs. President Bush won all six in 2004, and they are where the race is primarily being contested in the homestretch.

  • squomp

pushing daisies….. isnt that that show about the McCain campaign?

    im just sayin….

  • Hannibal {MCCAIN/PALIN 08)

I tried to get to the Bank Atlantic Center to see him in person tonight, but the lines were like “whoa!” The community response is just overwhelming. I am so proud of him. He is truly advancing us into the next century (unlike W Bush in 2000 & 2004).

    What the Daises?

  • missbrowneyes

Thanks for posting thiss. When I saw the list of networks airing this I thought “Well where is NBC?” Now, I know. ABC is such a dumbass network it’s easy to see how they made this mistake.

    OBAMA 08

  • pinky

    DAMN!!!!I missed it!

    How was it?

  • 2cute4u

I saw it I thought it was great how he spoke about his mother and how healthcare was an issue. I think it was a clever move to present something so personal. I also loved the part where Michelle spoke about his daughters and how he does something special and different with each of them. He’s a genuine person outside of the election, and the campaign.

  • DA TRUFF!!! The Truth Will Set You Free!!! (Thugs, gangbangers, pimps, criminals & the women who support them are killing our communities)

    HEY 2CUTE

    I AGREE MISSY! LOL!!!

IT WAS AN HONEST REAL LOOK AT THE MAN, HIS FOUNDATION, AND WHAT HE WILL BRING TO THE NATION!

I DON’T SEE THE OTHER SIDE COUNTERING OR RECOVERING FROM THIS!

  • And…..(with 5 dots)

His infomercial was absolutley BEAUTIFUL and a great way to close out the campaign. And thank god, b/c a sista is TIRED! This has been the most emotionally draining campaign season ever. I got a feeling it won’t be over on Nov. 4th though. The Republicans got some more BS up their sleeves. *sigh*

  • Marquis de Sade

I personally feel thatthe Obamercial was unnecessary. I liked it, but I’m not the one he needs to persuade. However, I did not know the CEO of Google was endorsing him. That was a big piece of goodness I took from it.

However, previous to this, Obama’s bio has only been seen by Convention viewers or avid cable news watchers. This exposure was invaluable in getting his background across to the many voters who may not have much familiarity with him. So to that, I say it was a fantastic event.

    CNN is ridiculous:

CNN declined to run the spot, and talks between ABC and the Obama campaign fell apart.

“We were approached by the Obama campaign and declined their request,” said Sal Petruzzi, senior vice president for public relations of Turner Broadcasting, CNN’s parent company.

“We did not want to pre-empt our programming lineup with a 30-minute spot. We would rather use our air to continue to cover the campaign, candidates and issues like we always do, from all points of view with the best political team on television

I would think that of all the stations…CNN would have picked it up. I’m disappointed because I know for sure that if this would have been a MCCAIN informercial…they would have agreed. You suck CNN

  • irina

OSama may be the first black terrorist presidnet in America but I’m sure it’ll be the shortest term served in history too. totally agree with u, the ppl @ sportinglove.com has the same feeling with u………. wow, how interesting
