CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Barack Obama’s ailing grandmother died Monday in Hawaii, a day before Obama was to stand election for the presidency, his campaign announced.

Madelyn Payne Dunham was 86.

The Democratic presidential candidate announced the news in a joint statement with his sister Maya Soetoro-Ng. The statement said Dunham died peacefully after a battle with cancer.

Obama last saw her on Oct. 23-24 when he took a break from campaigning and flew home to visit her.

“She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility. She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances,” Obama said in a statement. “She was proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring. Our debt to her is beyond measure.

The candidate learned of her death Monday morning while he was campaigning in Jacksonville, Florida. He planned to go ahead with campaign appearances.

Pac’s voice is soo hypnotizing!!! Its amazing that after all these years, people still pay homage and have love for him. I love seeing his mother in the video because she isnt just sitting back collecting checks from her son’s estate. She is really representing and making sure the world doesnt forget about her son. I really dont “feel” the song but I feel Pac’s voice and his presence.

WoW! I miss Tupac, alot..The video was cool…I wish he had been here, to watch him grow as an artist and a man. I’m over all the Tupac tributes. It’s been 12 years. Over those 12 years i have seen the tributes go from tasteful to ridiculous. Had Pac lived,would he be what we consider him now? Be honest, When he was alive,he really didn’t get love from all over nor was he considered one of the greatest rappers ever. It was only in death that he achieved true icon status. Pac was a polarizing figure who had his fare share of fans as well as detractors,but it was only after his death that he was elevated to level to which a lot of people see at now. This is not to disrespect his memory,this is just me,keeping it real and being honest. Had Tupac not been shot,he would have run his course,and ended up doing some wack ass reality show. As talented as the brother was,he was so conflicted about what kind of man he wanted to be as opposed to what kind of man he thought he should be. He was a poet,an actor and a rapper. He was NOT a revolutionary. He was not a leader. he was not an icon. He was an enigma,especially to himself and in the end,that is what led to his untimely demise.We really need to stop trying to rewrite history when it comes to people like Pac and Big,because in the end,it just does more harm to us the living as it does good for those who are dead.

Keyshia Cole is a pretty and talented artist. I really liked her when she first came out especially, but does anyone think that she might be trying to copy Rihanna now? I mean…not long after Rihanna went dark with her hair…Keyshia Cole jumped on the band wagon too. Even some of her hairstyles, and fashion choices seem to resemble Rihanna’s. Keyshia Cole had an interesting and unique image before (i.e. red/blond weave)going with the black do. I wish she would stick to that. I know artists r expected to reinvent themselves and I know it can get competitive b/w artists in the biz these days, and people try to outdo what their competitors are doing in the industry to stay relevant and in the spotlight, but that’s what I think made Keyshia. Her unique, funky image and style, and her realness.

for those who don’t know, she grew up around Pac. Therefore, she probably knew him better than anyone commenting about her “using” him. She ain’t in the media more than Beyonce’ so I don’t see how she’s shoving anything down anybody’s throats. Is the election over already?. Where the hell was I?.

As much as I’m all for Barack winning and not purely for the fact that he’s “Black”, but for the change that his Presidency would represent both politically and socially.

I think it’s a big mistake to assume, based on speculation, media coverage or your own desire for him to win, that he’s already won.

He’s the first “Black Man” to ever be an actual viable candidate, so of course there was going to be a great deal of media coverage as far his run was concerned. Being that other than some news organizations, a lot of media and it’s representatives lean towards liberalism. Although what I’ve seen of the way McCain handled his campaign and what he represents does give me much more hope, but it’s not over yet.

Get real! The brother was crazy talented,but by no means was he the BEST to ever get on the mic. He may have been the most passionate,but as a lyricist,There have been many that were on a level much higher than him. Rakim,KRS-1 ,Big daddy Kane,Nas and even Jay-Z were better as far as flow and lyrics. Pac touched a lot of people based on his personality,but his music was never on the same level as some of the other M.C’s i mentioned. A lot of Pac’s songs actually begin to sound the same after awhile. It took Dr.Dre to actually give him a commercially viable album.Pac has been magnified based solely on the way that he died much sore than the way thaty he lived. Ice Cube has been more prolific both as a rapper an as an actor than Pac,but because he’s still living,people don’t view him the same way. Death has a funny way of creating legends.

All of those artist u mentioned are good but put them in the place Pac was in. If any of those artist had died at 25 none of them would be known as the best rapper such as Pac has. Think about it. As for what Dre did well the only song Dre produced on Pac’s album was California Luv and maybe 1 or 2 more. That wasn’t even the best song on that album. The album made history but not because of that song but because ppl know Pac is real and what he speaks is too. When a artist starts making songs about all they have and what they can buy then their pawns to the music industry. Rakim is a nice Mc, KRS 1 is Ok, Big Daddy Kane was nice for a min, Nas is still hot and as for Jay Z he made most of his tracks so commercial that you’d have to watch T.V to see and know what he’s talking about. I’m from the east coast and I listen to all types of music but in my opinion no 1 can touch Da Don Tupac. Hands down the best MC. I never said the best Lyricist. That wasn’t his thing. Oh and yes Ice Cube is a good rapper but come on u must be joking if you can ever think that he and Pac can ever be measured on the same pedestal…Get it together….AmorDaDon
