Talk about speaking your mind…

Over the weekend, Susan Sarandon made an appearance at the Hamptons Film Festival in New York. While in the midst of discussing her 1995 movie ‘Dead Man Walking’ and Susan states that she sent the Pope a copy of the book then follows up with this quote:

“The last one, not this Nazi one we have now.”

Although there were quite a few chuckles in the crowd, Catholic groups didn’t find it as amuzing and are calling Susan’s comment ‘bespeaks unparalleled ignorance,’ but… was Susan’s comment far from the truth?

Here’s what Catholic League President Bill Donohue had to say:

Joseph Ratzinger [the Pope] was conscripted into the Nazi Youth the way every other 14-year-old German boy was at the time.

‘Unlike most others, he not only refused to go to the compulsory meetings, he actually deserted the Hitler Youth.

‘Which is precisely why Jews today regard him as a friend, not as an enemy.’

Wow… So the Pope was a Nazi just not a participating Nazi?
