I don't know if this has been stated before, but the wording of the Proposition was so ridiculous that I believe that the majority of voters misinterpreted the choices.

For Prop 8:

Yes vote = no gay marriage

No vote = yes gay marriage

Do you see the confusion?

@Cocobarbie. You said you voted against Prop 8, which means you voted FOR gay marriage.

If we are defining marriage as between a man and a woman, on the basis of religious tradition, than maybe we are having the wrong argument here. Maybe marriage in itself is an inherently flawed legal institution because it does not meet the legal criterion set forth by the Establishment Clause (separation of church and state). Instead of pushing this idea of “traditional marriage” (which is a false construct in itself considering the institution of marriage has been under constant changes in the last century) we should look to do away with marriage in the legal sense and only acknowledge it in the religious sense. What’s at stake here is a series of legal rights and protections offered under the term “marriage” but if that term is changed for everyone (because as Brown v. Topeka Board of Education displayed ‘separate is inherently unequal’) then we escape this repetitive and destructive battle that is currently being fought. The simple truth of the matter is that in America, you can not tell one individual that she or he is less than another, especially with regards to the law. This includes gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, nationality, religious affiliation, etc. As Black-Americans, we have lived with a different experience than the hegemonic ruling class. We understand that we must hold ourselves to a higher standard to gain equal representation amongst the mainstream. Because of this unfair standard and constant struggle, it should be relatively easy to understand why we should sympathize with the struggles of other minorities, gay or Latino or Asian, etc. That does not mean that we must support their causes, but we should not be so quick to impose the same hate and animosity that was imposed on us. Further (and this may start an argument) but gays have been persecuted for their sexuality long before we were brought here in chains. Participating in homosexual activity is still punishable by death in various places in the world, and it was not too long ago that it was illegal in the US to be gay. Now for all the struggle we have faced for our skin color, it has never been illegal for us to live. Granted, it’s been illegal at times to lead full and equal lives, but our very existence has never been challenged in the same manner as homosexuality has. And finally, from a perfectly scientific standpoint, bisexuality is the biological standard amongst most mammals. In fact, strict heterosexuality is rarely observed within animals. Now I am not comparing humans to animals (though biologically that is what we are) but the argument stating that homosexuality is not natural is straightforwardly false.

I agree with Geebz 100%. People have the right to their opinions. I don't hate gay people i just don't think that 2 same of the same gender who decide to get together should have their union labeled a marriage. The term marriage originates in the Bible which clearly doesn't condone same gender unions. But God did give us the right to free-will so although He clearly made his opinion clear about that we are still second-guessing it. Just because some of us don't agree with Jesus' opinion on what constitutes marriage doesn't change the fact that marriage between two people other than a man and a woman isn't a marriage. Saying the sky is green all you want doesn't change the fact that it is blue. A homosexual union will never be marriage no matter how much you say it is. God is the judge and His judgement is clear in the Bible. Period.

Since when is the "sanctity of marriage" so important to us black? I would think that the 70% divorce rate in our community would mean that we're doing enough to ruin the sanctity of marriage ourselves, without the help of gays black or white.

Regardless of what anyone thinks, the idea of keeping gays from marrying is just as silly as the ban on keeping blacks from whites, which was only demolished 40 years ago. I love how quickly the opressed become the oppressor--how long, did that take, 24 hours? "Obama won! Free at last! Now, where are YOU two gentleman going?" Unbelievable. Never underestimate the power of ignorance.

Ok Obviously, some people that posted b4 me (Jennifer) have not studied the bible enough. and what da hell does this mean???

"here are/were preachers and devout Christians who believed that God wanted them to enslave Blacks cause Blacks were beneath them. Now all Black people would disagree with that, and would say ‘oh they were misinterpreting the Bible’, ‘they were wrong"

If you change the bible or use it in a foul way then you are wrong. plain and simple. If you can find any where in the bible it says go enslave black people, then you let me know... You point it out... copy and paste, I don't care...

Second, you are right... Racist devils used the bible (changed it when they could) and tricked people into misunderstanding the bible. They also, as they still do today, even to molest and steal, use the bible and religion for their own personal gain. Look it up.

So don't tell me any religious bs, that you don't know about yourself. ansd

You can not point the finger at a color or so called race of people of people because some vote didn't work your way. That is not right and are different subjects even tho they have experienced some of the same Bullchit. The civvil rights struggle can NOT be compared to the struggle of some marriage rights. Any of you who say this should be ashamed of yourselves for stooping so LOW. The reason for a of a voting system is so the MAJORITY of people rule. So if the majority didn't vote your way then that is just that. Do something in your community to change it.

I think all people should have the same rights no matter who you fukin or riding with, Dem or Repub. WE ALL PEOPLE FROM THE SAME RACE. THE HUMAN RACE. WE JUST ALL DIFFERENT COLORS FROM PARTS OF ORIGIN ALL OVER THE WORLD. Aint NO Color better than the other in any way. WE ALL BLEED RED STUPID!!!!

Racist=Stupidity, & Ignorance= ( to Refuse the facts)

So stop being stupid and stop hating.

You are a part of your environment. Stop all this foolish finger pointing and talking down on folks. Take a lesson from YOUR PRESIDENT & MINE. and brush your mudhafukin shoulders off!!!! Learn what that means. Keep it movin.
