Battered and Bruised

Roy Jones Jr., was out-skilled over the weekend by Joe Calzaghe:

Joe Calzaghe toiled for years in relative obscurity, winning titles and building a virtually unmatched resume — but never venturing from Europe to challenge boxing’s best. It turns out he should have done so long ago. There was nothing at all to fear. The popular undefeated Welshman overcame a first-round knockdown to beat Roy Jones Jr. in a bloody one-sided unanimous decision Saturday night, delighting a raucous crowd at Madison Square Garden that seemed to be heavily in his favor. After winning a close decision over savvy veteran Bernard Hopkins in April, Calzaghe has little left to prove on boxing’s biggest stage, and few can fault him if he follows fellow British star Lennox Lewis into retirement at his peak. “This year I just beat two legends, with Hopkins and Jones, and I came to the United States to do it,” Calzaghe said. “I took the risk. They didn’t come to me. I took the risk.” With blazing hand speed and a constant push forward, Calzaghe (46-0) opened a deep gash over Jones’ left eye in the seventh round, forcing the ringside doctor to take a close look at it. The bout was allowed to continue, blood flowing down Jones’ face, but it hardly mattered after that.

It was probably time for Roy to hang up the gloves 10 fights ago. It’s unfortunate that he lost because when brothers lose to NON-brothers, that always has the potential to ruin our weekend. Thank God for Obama.

DAMN ROY!!! Just give it up…Lawd have Mercy

  • Doagae

Roy is lookin real crazy in that shot…lol

  • locknkey

The shame of this fight is it should have happened 7 years ago when both guys were champs and both were in their prime… Roy would have dusted him off like it was nothing. Now Roy’s as old as John McCain and can’t beat anybody worth a darn.

Great carrer Roy, but time to pack it in…

    Thanks for the great moments…

  • G Money

LOL! He need to let it go! CHI-TOWN!

  • PURPPLE

Sorry to say I seen this coming…poor Roy.

  • Jim

Roy is one of the best boxers of all time but he should’ve retired at least 4 years ago. he hasn’t been the same since he got KO’d by Tarver four years ago.

Watching roy fight today is sad when you think about what an amazing boxer he was when he was in his prime. He was untouchable…and he completely dominated boxing, but the man turns 40 years old in January and he’s not the same boxer anymore and needs to retire. Getting beat up like this will only hurt his legacy.

  • Lady D

I watched this fight Saturday at a Sports Bar, and the damn room was clearing out by the 8th round because Roy was getting his ass handed to him so badly. I was very disappointed, and let down.

  • BE

DAMN..YOU GOTTA KNOW WHEN TO PACK IT IN ROY!!

  • Shell

Win or lose I still think he’s one of the best to ever fight. I just wish his heart was still in it, now its like he’s fighting just for the money so it not exciting to watch, but I Still love him!!! Pensacola in the House Baby!!! GO ROY!!!

Thank God for Joe Calzaghe. He’s bringing back the true art of pugilism that has been lost due to the bastardization of that hack Ali and his ROPE-A-DOPE shenanigans. You blacks have done more harm than good to the sweet science. Calzaghe is the true WHITE HOPE! GOD BLESS!

Roy shoulda left well enough alone. He got chumped. It was ugly to watch.

  • Wife

    priceless photo

  • Dave

Sad, Roy needs to stop before it’s too late. Actually Roy lost it once he went up to the heavyweight class. His body never recouped after that. He has no plan b, his whole game plan was based upon his speed, which he no longer has.

  • Lou

Great fighter who fight pass their prime are still good enough to beat average fighters, but Roy is pass his prime and Calzaghe is a great fighter thats a few years younger, but with less wear and tear. Roy may of being better 10yrs ago, but not now, Calzaghe seen if aged better skill wise.

  • Corey

Yeah he beat Hopkins and Jones…but both are past their prime…actually Jones is WAAAYYY past his prime. Could he have done this 10-15 yrs ago?

  • Redd Tony aka Earth Sign “When everybody thinks alike, nobody is really thinking”

I see why you aint neva quit Roy, Capricorns never quit

  • Tone Bone

Remember the rap song he made “YALL MUST HAVE FORGOT” YEAH i FORGOT NICCA

  • DieVerse

Damn…watching this fight was tough on any RJJr fan, dude got straight up served! I’d agree with most the peeps saying he should retire to save his legacy but f*ck a legacy yo…the mortgage still need to get paid, the car note is still delinquent, the bills is coming every month. You gotta do what you gotta do.

    Do ya thang Roy!

Love how clowns like opie keep bringing race into argument especially when they dont even understand boxing in the first place.

Calzaghe is one of the greats , simply put. Granted across his fights arguments could be said about him leaving the UK and the level of competition but the skill is there regardless. I would agree with others much rather watch this fight during Roys prime , dont know could go either way then but would have been much better to watch. Cal is a same situation as PBF as where the competition is really sparse and not really worth the effort.Tarver really didnt hurt roy it was the Johnson knockout that dropped his career. Really if you a true boxing head like any sport its about the skills involved , You can see across from the greats like Jack Johnson, Marciano, Duran , Sugar , Ali , Dempsey the list is endless

  • benny

u people are sad if it ruined ur weekend because a white dude beat a brother….im a brother and i hate when my brothers make stupid comments like that keep it classy.

  • Moreaces

He still has the best body on earth.

  • MOE

This white dude beats two old black boxers and now he is one of the best boxer ever. Come on, give me a break! If this white dude fought Roy or B Hop in their prime, you would have never heard of him again. Roy needed to retire 3 or 4 years ago. He wasn’t beaten up that badly but he was beaten and looked old.

Do I need to go on?

This guy has no punching power.

  • BKLYNZ OWN

    DAMN BRO!

  • Mocha

Yeah, it was really hard to watch him have his ass handed to him like that…just a disgrace!
