Sometimes there is such as thing as doing too much... In the world of a rich and famous celebrity, there are business opportunities around every corner, on every e-mail, on the other end of every phone call. The difference between success and failure can often be as simple as asking "Is this really a good idea?" or not. Over the years famous faces have pitched everything from easy-use kitchen grills (George Foreman) to soda (Ray Charles) however, not all of these entrepreneurial ventures turns out to be a cash cow. In the spirit of those that tried and failed we bring you a short list of celebs that attempted to make a dollar out of 15 cents and failed miserably. Flip to script to peep some of the most outrageous...
Magic Stick condoms Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson has made a lot of money as businessman, nevermind a rapper. His storied multi-hundred-million dollar Vitamin Water deal may have been the the biggest paycheck any MC ever garnered away from the microphone. Unfortunately, not all of the wordsmith's entrepreneurial efforts have yielded those same results. Fiddy's partnership with LifeStyles brand condoms dubbed "The Magic Stick" was short-lived after the condom giant (no pun intended) pulled out (again...no puns) of the deal. We can only surmise that no man wanted 50 Cent on his di-...well, you get it.
Kim Kardashian "Jam" (Turn It Up) The phrase "everything ain't for everybody" comes to mind when thinking about Kimmy Cakes terrible, mind-numbing, ear pollution of a "single" called "Jam" (Turn It Up) which was produced by "Radio Killa" (how ironic) The-Dream. To make matters worse Kim's status and money even got acclaimed video director Hype Williams to sully his name by filming a music clip to accompany the wretched tune. Peep the fawkery that is Kim Kardashian's singing career below.
Fashion Cafe In 1995 super-models Naomi Campbell, Elle Macpherson, Claudia Schiffer, and Christy Turlington all invested in opening a chain of restaurants similar to Planet Hollywood called Fashion Cafe. From the beginning the franchise suffered numerous set-backs, critical panning, and overall poor execution. After 3 years of bad business the NYC cafe closed for good in 1998. Good try ladies...
Flava Flav's Chicken
In 2011, Flav partnered with Nick Cimino to open Flav’s Fried Chicken in Cimino's hometown of Clinton, Iowa. Flav met Cimino through his brother Peter, who runs Mama Cimino's in Las Vegas. After enjoying the rapper's homemade fried chicken, Peter Cimino began selling 99¢ chicken wings using Flav's recipe. The founders hope that Flav's Fried Chicken will be the first of a national restaurant franchise; like KFC, it uses a secret recipe. However, a mix of squabbling owners and bad business decisions led to Flavor Flav's Chicken shut down 12 weeks after it opened.Would you eat Flav's chicken?? Source
Wicked Wisdom In case you were unaware, Jada Pinkett-Smith is/was the lead vocalist in a Rock-N-Roll Metal band called Wicked Wisdom. We know that the Smith household is full of talent and encourages self-expression, but this might have been a lil' over-the-top even for the famous family. Here is one critic's review of Wicked Wisdom and their music:
The chords are sludgy and down-tuned to the point where one finger is all you need to play most of them, the solos are virtually non-existent, the rapping is little more than talking, and singing off-key is basically expected. All of which Mrs. Smith (or Jada Koren, as she called herself on-stage to fool the one or two people who didn’t know who she was) was an expert on. Prepare yourself for the absolute best Wicked Wisdom had to offer, and then weep for your poor unfortunate eardrums.Ouch. Check out the music for yourself in the video below. Uhhh, yeah...
Pastamania In 1995 Terry "Hulk Hogan" Bollea opened Pastamania in The Mall of America in Minneapolis Minnesota. The restaurant included dished named "Hulk-U's" and "Hulk-A-Roo's" unfortunately for the Hulkster, the food sucked and the operation was shut down in less than 12 months. Try a new hustle...BROTHER!! Looks like a lovely place to eat doesn't it...? SMH
Sweetface After the initial launch and semi-success of JLo by Jennifer Lopez, the business-saavy Latina started a new line called Sweetface in 2005. However in 2009 as a major national recession was setting in, Lopez shelved Sweetface pending a complete overhaul of the designs and finances of the company. Apparently, even those from "Jenny's block" wouldn't even support her cheap looking clothes...
Michael Jordan cologne Long story short, we don't wanna smell like Mike, we want to dunk, shoot jumpers, wear his sneakers, and win like he did. Period.
Paris Hilton Hair Extensions Would you let a white, rich, bird-brained debutante tell you about how to wear your hair, or worse convince you to wear hers??? We didn't think so, but that didn't stop the O.G. attention slore Paris Hilton from trying.
Shaq Vs. In 2009 Shaq decided to ride the reality TV wave with a show that would pit the big guy against other celebs in an attempt to outdo them at their jobs. It was a bad idea. The show sucked, Shaq never "won", and the overall premise just wasn't that interesting. Hopefully, Shaq will be better than Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith on his new gig on TNTs Inside The NBA this season.
Tyra Banks "Shake Ya Body" Model/actress Tyra Banks made an attempt to become a triple threat and...it didn't go so well. In 2004 Tyra released her debut single called "Shake Ya Body" and bodies definitely shook...in convulsions after hearing how bad the song was. If you were lucky enough to have never heard it, we will ruin your day by presenting it below for your viewing pleasure.
The Kardashian Kard The talentless Kim Kardashian makes her second appearance on this list, but this time she dragged her sisters down with her. After much side-eyeing the MasterCard sponsored "Kardashian Kard" was yanked from the shelves after it was discovered that there were numerous expensive fees associated with it. When we say "fees" we mean ridiculousness like $99.95 just to own the card, a $9.95 "purchase fee" (whatever the hell THAT is), and 7.95 a year in "maintenance fees". The big money scheme didn't even last 30 days before the Kardashian Klan pulled out due to public outrage.
