A drug addict in California has been sentenced this week to 10 years in prison for strangling and sexually assaulting a chihuahua.
Robert Edward De Shields, who is wheelchair-bound and has been in and out of prison since 1992, rented space in a South Sacramento home.
In March, the family found De Shields in the garage with their eight-month-old dog, which was in pain and shock.
A veterinarian later found severe injuries to the dog’s rectum and internal organs, as well as evidence of asphyxiation. Prosecutors said De Shields was high on methamphetamine at the time of the assault.
In an unusual requirement for an animal-cruelty case, De Shields is now required to register as a lifetime sex offender and will therefore serve his sentence in a state prison.
