Mind you “Pretty Ricky” has seven kids… The man doesn’t believe in birth control, but that doesn’t mean that he shouldn’t be able to understand why a 13-year-old raped by her uncle shouldn’t have to go through with having a baby:

Rick Santorum has been condemned after claiming that rape victims who become pregnant should ‘make the best of a bad situation’.

The Republican presidential candidate – who is currently third in the polls – said that women in such a position should not get an abortion but instead welcome their ‘horrible gift from God’.

He added that even if his own daughter became pregnant after being raped he would still urge her to have the child.

Santorum is ultra conservative and a devout Catholic who has in the past spoken of how he wants to ban abortion with a constitutional amendment.

He enjoyed a surge in the Iowa caucus because of support from evangelical Republicans but his stark comments risk alienating swing voters who are undecided on the issue.

In a sign of the potential backlash, he has already come under fire from pro-choice commentators who said that he was only ‘adding to the trauma’ of what a rape victim goes through.

In an interview on CNN with Piers Morgan, Santorum said: ‘Well, you can make the argument that if she doesn’t have this baby, if she kills her child, that that, too, could ruin her life.

‘And this is not an easy choice, I understand that. As horrible as the way that that son or daughter and son was created, it still is her child. And whether she has that child or she doesn’t, it will always be her child, and she will always know that.
‘And so to embrace her and to love her and to support her and get her through this very difficult time, I’ve always, you know, I believe and I think the right approach is to accept this horribly created – in the sense of rape – but nevertheless a gift in a very broken way, the gift of human life, and accept what God has given to you.

‘As you know, we have to, in lots of different aspects of our life we have horrible things happen. I can’t think of anything more horrible, but nevertheless, we have to make the best out of a bad situation and I would make the argument that that is making the best.’

Santorum, 53, has seven children with wife Karen, 51. She suffered a late-term miscarriage in 1996 of a boy they named Gabriel.

Asked by Morgan if one of his daughters was raped and began ‘begging you to let her have an abortion’, Santorum replied: ‘I would do what every father would do – to try to counsel your daughter to do the right thing.’

Santorum also defended his support of the death penalty and said that it was consistent with his respect for human life.

He said: ‘I would say when there is certainty – and there are occasions when there is certainty – that’s the case when capital punishment can be used.’

Santorum’s comments sparked a firestorm on the Internet with left-leaning website Think Progress attacking what he said.

Tanya Somanader, one its writers, said: ‘The problem with Santorum’s sense of humanity is that it doesn’t seem to extend to the victim.

‘The emotional and physical trauma endured during and after a sexual assault often leaves a woman feeling robbed of any control over her own body and welfare.

‘Robbing a woman of the choice to decide what to do with such ‘horribly created’ consequences only contributes to the victim’s trauma.’

Earlier this month it emerged that Mrs Santorum had a six-year affair with an pioneering abortion doctor when she was in her 20s.

She reportedly had the fling with Dr Thomas Allen even though he was 40 years her senior and, in a bizarre twist, delivered her as a baby.

Mrs Santorum, who shares her husband’s strong views on abortion, apparently had ‘no problems’ at all with what her former boyfriend did for a living.

We know many people feel the same way that Santorum does, but it’s out of order to say that it’s the “right thing to do.” It might not be fair to the child if the mother doesn’t feel they are a “gift from God.” What do you think? Is Santorum going to be jumping out of this race soon?
