The movie follows the life of William “Woody” Watson, played by Michael Rainey, Jr., a 13-year-old in search of a family and better life. The emcee will play the role of Woody’s ex-con uncle Vincent. Woody will look to his uncle as a father figure, who hopes to lead a legitimate life but finds trouble doing so.
“Vincent is a uniquely conflicted character,” said Common in a press release. “I found an appeal in his desire to move past his failures and onto the right track, and the challenges that presents.”
Common will also serve as one of the film’s producers. Production begins this week. Also starring in the film are Dennis Haysbert, Danny Glover, Charles S. Dutton, Megan Good, Michael K. Williams, Lonette McKee, Tracey Heggins and Marz Lovejoy.
