Shuaib said he played basketball with Vanderhorst and friends of Rhodes. He said Rhodes showed up twice, with the fight ensuing the second time. He said he stayed close to Vanderhorst because he feared for his friend’s safety. He said he told Vanderhorst — armed with a large knife — to “chill” during the fight with Rhodes about 7 p.m.
“I wanted him to leave so none of this transpires,” he told his attorney, Cheryl Coleman. “I didn’t want anything to happen to Jah-Lah.”
The lawyer replied, “Did you want anything to happen to Tyler Rhodes?”
“No,” Shuaib answered.
“Did you want him to die?” “No,” he replied.
Coleman mentioned the prosecution’s allegations that Shuaib restricted the movements of Rhodes.
“Look me in the eye and tell me if you ever intended to do that?” Coleman asked.
“No ma’am,” Shuaib answered.
