Denise Bestman, 11, made a television splash Sunday night, singing Adele’s hit song “Rolling in the Deep” in a Target ad to promote the pop star’s new album.
“I was speechless,” said Denise, a former member of the chorus at Public School 22. “I didn’t know what to say.”
The silence faded. Then she and her mom, Dextina Lincoln, let loose.
“We both started screaming,” Lincoln said. “She was saying, ‘Oh, my God, I can’t believe it’s me. I can’t believe it’s me.’ It was amazing.”
Target officials first spotted Denise in a PS 22 performance of Adele’s song that has more than a million hits on YouTube, choral director Gregg Breinberg said.
The director praised Denise’s performance in the commercial, which featured her singing in a city bus.
“She was amazing. She looked amazing,” Breinberg said of the sixth-grader, who now attends Intermediate School 51. “She sounded amazing. She did us proud.”
“Next step — she’ll be on the Grammys accepting an award and someone will be singing her song in a commercial,” he added. “With Denise, it would not surprise me.”
Though she was one of 64 students from PS 22 to perform at the Oscars last February,
Denise, whose favorite song is Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain,” has yet to meet the newly minted Grammy winner. She still hopes to.
Denise, whose relatives nicknamed her “Denise Star,” said she probably began singing the day she was born. And she hasn’t stopped singing since.
“I sing almost every day — at school, at home, outside. I sing when I’m bored,” she said.
“When I’m reading, I sometimes sing the words out,” she added. “Sometimes reading is boring. I sing to make it more amusing.”
One of the reasons why we felt Adele was so deserving of those 6 Grammys this year is the way that people of all ages connect to her music. We especially love to see the kids like Denise try to hit and hold those notes.
