Wanda Sykes Proud to be a Lesbian

Posted by Bossip Staff

Wanda Sykes has come out of the closet:

LAS VEGAS—Comedian Wanda Sykes says the passage of a same-sex marriage ban in California has led to her be more outspoken about being gay.

“You know, I don’t really talk about my sexual orientation. I didn’t feel like I had to. I was just living my life, not necessarily in the closet, but I was living my life,” Sykes told a crowd at a gay rights rally in Las Vegas on Saturday.

“Everybody that knows me personally they know I’m gay. But that’s the way people should be able to live their lives,” she said.

Sykes, who is known for her feisty and blunt style, said the passage of California’s Proposition 8 made her feel like she was “attacked.”

“Now, I gotta get in their face,” she said. “I’m proud to be a woman. I’m proud to be a black woman, and I’m proud to be gay.”

Sykes’ appearance at the Las Vegas rally surprised organizers. She was in town performing at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.

The recent events out in Cali have apparently done a lot to unite the gay and lesbian community. Good for Wanda for finally coming out of the closet. We have to say that winning an order of small fries from McDonald’s was more of a surprise than this.

    No surprise here.

  2. sykes shes jus fucking wth yall lol

  3. muffin cAKES

    I KNEW IT!!!

  4. sepia830

Wanda Sykes is gay? Nooooooooooo. Get out!

Yeah right, like we hadn’t already figured this one out. When it quacks like a duck…it’s a gay duck.

  5. Ms Julips (Woman's virtue is man's greatest invention.)

Its amusing when the media says that it was good someone like Wanda or Ellen finally came out of the closet. Hell, I knew they were masculine dressing lesbos the very first time I saw them on tv! Who was zooming who?

  6. Tommy Arcade

yeaaaaah, I don’t see how Wanda being gay is a big deal, but Prop 8 is a fucking tragedy. The only plus side to this is that it took her and others to realize living in the dark isn’t ever worth it if it means having your basic rights as an American denied.

  7. sepia830

I’m so sick of this Prop 8 bullsh*t. Now gays can’t get married in California. Well sometimes voting just doesn’t go your way. Get over it! (And stop taking up valuable space on the news that could be dedicated to celebrity gossip…dammit!)

  8. MissBlaze43

Queen Latifah… we’re waiting on you now, Luv. Please… just come on out and play with the rest of us. Don’t worry, your fan’s will STILL love you.

  9. MissBlaze43

    @ sepia830

Hold on, hold on. Do you even know what the REAL issues are behind this whole Proppsition 8? Or are you just talking shit because you’re clueless?

  10. sepia830

    @MissBlaze43…

Maybe Queen Latifah doesn’t feel she has to state the obvious. She can be herself and live her life without making it everyone else’s business.

  11. Oshie's Weekend Madness

Yeah, celebrity gossip is way more important than civil rights! Duh!

  12. MissBlaze43

That may be true, but why hide the obvious because of what people think! Those days are long and gone where we should have to bow down to how other people think we should live, or what other think is wrong.

  13. MissBlaze43

    @ Oshie

    THANK YOU!!

Besides, sepia830, we have rights, too, to be able to answer for our loved ones.

But you know what, maybe you don’t know anything about that.

  14. Karen

I could care less whether gays marry or not. And I live in VA, so I could really care less about whether gays in CA can marry.

HOWEVER, THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN! It was put to a VOTE! What’s the point of a democracy if you’re going to fight to undo any vote that does not go your way?

If you wanna marry so badly, take your azz to one of the states that allows you to do so. BUT, if they knew what I know, they wouldn’t be fighting so hard for the right to marry. Marriage is no walk in the park. Furthermore, it’s easy to get into (repeat after some guy at the courthouse) but hard as hell to get out of. They should just enjoy their relationships, the fact that they do get “partners’ rights”, and the knowledge that they can just walk out the door and keep it moving if things don’t work out.

Oh yeah, who cares if Sykes is gay. Doesn’t change the vote.

  15. @MissBlaze43, I agree with you on every single one of the posts you put up

  16. Karen

@MIZZBLAZE, it’s my understanding that gays still have the right to “answer for their partners”, they just don’t have the right to MARRY because the people have spoken and have no interest in changing the definition of marriage to accommodate someone else’s desires.

Even if I’m wrong and gays don’t have that right to answer for loved ones, THE PEOPLE VOTED!!!

Imagine if McCain voters took to the streets all over this country to protest the outcome of this election! I mean, shyt just didn’t go their way, but it’s not like one person or legislative body made a tyrannical decision. A democracy is at work here, and unfortunately, someone’s disappointed with the outcome.

  17. sepia830

    MsBlaze43…

Hold up, don’t turn into an angry gay b*tch because I didn’t vote the way you wanted me to. I don’t know your ass.

Just like you have the right to be gay, I have the right to vote against gay marriage if I so choose. I’m not homophobic (worked in an office full of gay people for 5 years and one of my dearest friends is gay!), but I don’t appreciate that the people voted before and had their decision overturned by a group of judges. How do we keep telling people that their votes really do count if we are going to allow them to be overturned? America is supposed to be about democracy, a place where majority rules. My vote for Prop 8 was a vote FOR the voting system.

On a more personal note, I could care less if gay people get married because it won’t affect my life in the least. But I am tired of hearing Ellen and other gays compare their struggles to that of black people, which is bullshit.

  18. DR. TOOTH

She was already out of the closet Bossip. You novice writers will write anything for a headline. Your reaching again!

  19. sepia830

@Karen…thanks for proving that there is intelligent life on Bossip.com.

MissBlaze43…the fact that you have Oshie co-signing for you should say it all. lol

And the celeb gossip part was a joke. I guess gay people are too uptight right now to have a sense of humor. What a shame.

  20. Karen

Besides, did all of these gay people show up at the polls and vote on Prop 8, or did they just show up, fill in the circle for Obama and give just scant attention to everything else?

I watch the protests and think that if all the people out there raising hell had actually showed up and voted, things may have gone their way.

Y’all had my sympathy for a minute there, but now y’all are starting to pizz me off–causing chaos and trying to undermine our democracy cause shyt didn’t go y’all way.

And PUH-LEEZE do not try to equate this to civil rights laws that did not allow Blacks the most BASIC rights to be HUMAN.

No one’s saying gays should be considered 3/5 of a person, be denied public facilities, or be educated in subpar facilities. People are saying THIS HAS BEEN THE DEFINITION OF MARRIAGE SINCE THE EARTH WAS CREATED and gays simply do not fit into the equation.

  21. Oshie's Weekend Madness

    Ok, sepia, how about this….

Say you live in a town where there is a large fundamental conservative Christian group that is pro-segregation. Now, we know that segregation was “outlawed” more or less at the end of the Jim Crow days. But this group is really pushing for an amendment that will reinstate segregation but only in small portions of your town. These may even be areas that black people and white people never intermix, but the principle of the thing is that it’s an outdated law that should not exist. Even if the “majority” of people vote for it. Moving forward into 2009, people. Let’s get with it.

  22. The Th3rd

Oh, P.S. I didn’t co-sign shit, re-read everything before you start the name-calling and getting your blood pressure up.

  24. sepia830

Oshie..please don’t waste your time directing your posts to my attention because soon as I see my name under yours, I keep scrolling… Thanks and have a f*cked up day.

  25. MissBlaze43

People voted on TERM LIMITS for the Mayor of the City of NY, too. Yet there’s a HUGE possibility Bloomberg will get a third term.

Our Struggle is being recognized as human beings and not being rediculed because of whom we choose to love and Marry. If that sounds the same as struggling to be recognized as human beings instead of looking at the color of ones skin, then… oh well.

We should be allowed to MARRY whom we choose, because if “personally it doesn’t matter to you,” then it shouldn’t be an issue AT ALL!!!!

  26. Karen

@Sepia, I feel you. Funny thing is, my liberal azz would have probably voted to give gays the right to marry. (Then again, maybe I would’ve been feeling charitable that day and voted to spare them the agony–lol)

BUT…to try to force their ways on a people–that’s why we have a democracy in place.

And the comparison to the Civil Rights Movement is soooooo wrong.

As one person posed on CNN last night, “If this is such a C.R. issues, why is it that Blacks are so against it?”

We know the difference between our struggle and what gays are going through.

Shyt, I may just decide polygamist marriages should be legal. Hell, a sista’s sick of cooking and cleaning all the time. Let’s share the responsibility and let my hubby take on another wife or 2.

Men would probably love this idea (crazy ones, anyway). SO, imagine us pushing to make polygamy legal. Then if we’re unhappy with the outcome of the VOTE, we take to the streets.

I mean, where does it end?

Where do we draw the line and realize America does not mean accomodating every whim and desire of man.

  27. Oshie's Weekend Madness

Nobody cares about Wanda Sykes and I’m so tired of hearing about this Prop 8 bullshit. Just like all the Obama supporters are saying “we won get over it” same thing with this.

  34. Oshie's Weekend Madness

How am I hating? Just curious.

  35. Karen

@OSHIE, Nice try, but no one’s talking about segregating gays.

HUGE difference between separating human beings based on the premise that they are inferior and deciding that the institution of marriage is not one to be trifled with just because gay people decided they want a crack at it.

This Prop is really FOR MARRIAGE–not against gays.

Thank you! One of the best post on Bossip I have read in a long time! Kudos x 2!

  39. sepia830

    @Karen…

You are so right. (And lol about letting your husband take on an additional wife.)

If we allow the majority vote to be overturned then there is no point in voting in the first place. Let the judges make all the decisions and we can just stay at home.

And if we’re going to overturn some shit, how about overturning the ban on affirmative action and the temporary right we have as black people to vote in America? That is important to me. Two people of the same sex saying “I do” so they can later say “I don’t anymore” really isn’t.

  40. Karen

    AGAIN, WHERE DOES IT END???

What happens when I start a movement for POLYGAMY because a sista’s sick of doing all the work–or another sista’s bisexual and wants to have it all.

What happens when the guy wants the right to marry the horse he’s been screwing since childhood?

Where do you draw the line on what constitutes marriage and what does not????

  41. rainbowrabbit

I may be in the minority, but this is news to me. Well, good for her.

  43. WordtotheWise

Karen, I’m going to have to cosign with your comments. Where does it end? The next thing you know, a person would want to right to marry a child b/c they feel in love. Seem improbable? Some people believe marriage should be between a man and a woman. I agree, this is NOTHING like the Civil Rights movement at all.

  44. rainbowrabbit

Oops. Typed in the wrong email address. My gravatar didn’t show up.

  45. Karen

SEPIA, you laugh, but sometimes a sista could use a break! There are times I wouldn’t even mind if there was another bed he could go to when I’m tired and not in the mood.

The high cost of daycare??? Let the other wife stay home with all the kids! I wouldn’t mind having a nice homecooked meal waiting for me when I get home after a long day of work my damned self!

And that C.R’s comparison??? If only, there had been a place a black person could’ve gone in this country and found the humane treatment he was entitled to by birthright. Don’t tell me not being allowed to marry is the same as being a slave or considered less than human!

    ________________________________________________________

Exactly! I thought the whole point of marriage was to bring children into the world through love! A man and a man can’t do that, and neither can a woman and another woman! So, yeah, the line has to be drawn somewhere!

The sanctity of the institution of marriage, over half of which ends in divorce? What harm could it bring to this “sacred institution” by letting other people who love eachother and want to start families into it? I really do think that by denying people these rights you are in a sense segragating them from the rest of the community. You are overlooking all the little things that would be denied couples and families because they are gay (insurance, hospitalization, heirship… wait, those aren’t little things at all!).

  48. Oshie's Weekend Madness

Civil Rights are Civil Rights and do not belong exclusively to one race or group. What do you think MLK would say about this?

  49. Karen

@MIZZBLAZE, honey, married was created and defined as an institution between one man and one woman.

No one’s saying you don’t have the right to love, live with, or have sex with another person. The vote simply asks you to recognize that the decision about who you love disqualifies you from the institution of marriage.

I see marriage as a spiritual connection anyway. (So, do many, which is why Christians vote against gay marriage) We simply use man to legally document the exchange.

If it’s all that important to you, why not just look your loved ones in the eyes and make that vow before your god? Hell, have a wedding. Invite friends and loved ones.

No one’s saying you can’t marry or have a wedding…

The Prop is saying that man will not legally document it.

  50. WordtotheWise

Oshie, what civil rights have been violated here? To really be honest with you, I think gays are some of the most protected group of people on this planet. Why? Because they band together and are a force to be reckoned with. Just ask Isaiah Washington. The fact they can’t get married in the traditional sense, in my opinion, does not constitute civil rights? To answer your question, I think MLK, being the minister would be appalled. JMO.

  51. WordtotheWise

If you knew what I know, your azzes would remain happily single and just enjoy the benefits of your relationship without the drama of a messy divorce. Who the hell wants to join an already failing club anyway??? Let’s see, straight people are having a hard time at it, why don’t we give it a try??!!! I kid, I kid. But, surely you don’t think allowing gays to marry would improve that stat, do you?

    2. It’s my understanding that gays do have the rights you mentioned. If they knew what I do, they take it and run. Some people just want shyt cause they’re told they can’t have it!

    3. MLK the Baptist preacher??? I think he would’ve voted against gay marriage and gave an award winning speech explaining why. I think the speech would’ve turned into a Grammy-winning CD. :-)

How would you guys feel if the Prop had NOT passed and gays were allowed to legally marry.

    THEN….

Religious groups and those against gay marriage took to the streets in protest, vowing to have the result of the DEMOCRATIC VOTE BY THE PEOPLE overturned?

Just reflect on that for a minute–especially Oshie and MizzBlaze—I mean REALLY reflect on it, before answering.

I never knew….I just thought she was a woman didn’t care too much about girly, well, hmmmmm, Wanda whaaaaat yah gonna do about it? I’m not gay, but I don’t believe I have a right to tell someone whether or not they have a right to get married, imagine if African Americans were still considered 3/5 of a man (overtly anyways). I happy they took the streets, fighting for their rights. To each its own.

  67. Shay

I can respect anyone who can come out to the world and say that they are something that’s unpopular.

This wasn’t a shock though, she always had that way about her.

@ Razzell Dazzell – I agree only thing I find interesting about all this on the news everyone keeps saying that the “people” voted , A good deal of people rarely understand what propositions are all bout when they are proposed on ballots. They are usually worded with a specific context that most folks usually are uniformed about their actual intent.

The other thing in this that is strange the amount of non-californians involved their democratic process, the millions of dollars and thousands of volunteers from mormon and christian groups that poured in from out of state. If cali folk want to vote for or against any law it should be their right to decide independent of anyone else’s interference. Especially when we practice things such as freedom of religion , noone takes issue with polygamy that some sections of their religion still practice. Idk , still think that if we are truly equal under the principles of law independent of religion their should be under law equality for all individuals..

  69. @Razzell Dazzell:

This is my issue: If gay people want to get laws and lobby for the right to get married, let em do it! Who the hell cares? But don’t try to compare what black people had to endure for 400 years and to a certain extent, even to this day as the same! Don’t do that! Hell, let’s take a look at how society is on “Star Trek”. Humor me if you will? I have never seen a gay anything on Star trek. Ever. Know why? society is supposed to be advanced to the point where aliens are out kickin’ it with us and homosexuality goes against the natural order of things, and no one can deny that! Put simply: If you wanna get all gay behind closed doors, nobody has an issue with that, but I don’t want to see a dude kissing another dude! (Yeah Lil’ Wayne, you either!) That shit ain’t what I’m about! Apparently, a lot of voters feel the same way!

I don’t keep changing my name… Been MissBlaze43 all damn year. Sorry for what’s going on in Cali, but what does that have to do with my name?….

AND, for the record I’m BI, I like women and men. Been married before, but won’t marry again. HOWEVER, I still stand by what I say; you should be able to marry whom ever you choose.

And while you may need a man to concieve, you sure as hell don’t need him to do the deed.

And let’s not forget, if you research, you’ll see that Gay & Lesbians stay in relationships WAY longer than straight people do.

AND, don’t believe that crap about people recognizing gay and lesbian unions in court, etc. Being that none of you are ‘in the life’ you wouldn’t know WHAT kind of descrimination is happening.

In any event, just like we now have a black president, there will come a time when gay & lesbians will be able to marry.

  75. WordtotheWise

You wanna talk about discrimination? I have a friend that works for an AID awareness organization. Most of the employees are gay/lesbian; she is not. They treat her like crap. We forget that some of the very people whining about not getting married, are themselves very exclusive, hateful, and mean. Obviously she’s not against gays or she wouldn’t be working for this organization; however, they treat her like sh*t. We don’t wanna talk about that.

Let me add, anyone can be mean. I’m not saying this is exclusively a “gay/lesbian” thing, I’m just pointing out that some of the very people hollering are the ones doing the deed themselves. Hate is equal opportunity.

    “AIDS” not AID.

    Yeah, she’s “funny”, alright!

  81. MissBlaze43

    @ WordtotheWise

Well then she shouldn’t have to just sit there and take it. What is she doing to rectify the situation? Most gays & lesbians are sweet as pie, REALLY. The only time I know them to act salty is if they’ve been wronged by that person somehow… I don’t know, I just find it strange that they’d treat her like that.

  82. WordtotheWise

Daywalker>>>You know in this politically correct age, you cannot say anything against gays/lesbians or you’re considered homophobic. People don’t have a right to their opinion, especially as it relates to the gay/lesbian community.

Yes, she’s going through hell, especially after this Prop 8 debacle. She can’t quit her job b/c she needs it like everyone else, so she has to endure the b.s. SMH.

  83. MissBlaze43

    @ Paps

It WOULD be nice if Alicia Keys were to come out of the closet… but I’m thinking she’s Bi-femme, like myself. Either way, that would be a win-win!!

  84. Anna

Not surprised by this at all. It will not make me feel any different about her.

  85. Sydney

Good afternoon, did anyone see Keith Olbermann’s special comment on Prop 8 the other day? I think it was very eloquent and insightful.

As for myself, I wouldn’t feel comfortable taking such a right away from any group. What justification would I have for denying someone a right that I enjoy? I think it is a personal matter that should be left for couples to make — not the government.

  86. Sydney

    Oops, “personal decision”

  87. MissBlaze43

So, I’m curious now. What’s going to happen to those people who did get married? Remember now; these people got married when it was “okay” for them to. So now what; they’re not going to recognize that as a marriage when they did so when it was Legal.

Are Ellen & Porcia now NOT really married any more?

How is that going to be looked upon?

  88. MissBlaze43

How are those marriages going to be affected? is what I mean.

  89. @WordtotheWise

And that’s the whole ball of wax! If you say that you don’t care for homosexuals, everyone says that you should be “Boycotted/blacklisted”, but if you consign with them, you are a closet homo! WTF? The law specifically states that their marriages will not be recognized, so who cares? Maybe if they get voters to see their viewpoint, this will go away, but I have a feeling that they will have a herculean task of doing so!

  90. Moreaces

I’m very proud of you Ms. Wanda,, I was here in DC cheering on the cause… Stay Blessed Wanda

By LAW, they never were! They had a ceremony and everything, but as far as the law is concerned, they are just cohabitants of the same domicile.(Shackin’ up!) Nothing more.

  92. JCB

Not really surprised. Anyway, I posted this in another topic but it’s also related to this topic.

Homophobic people like Trick-Trick are the reason why there are so many men out there who hide their sexuality. I had a cousin who stopped communicating with the family after he came out of the closet, due to fear of how he may have been treated. What he didn’t know is that we had already suspected it and we were already very accepting. This broke my heart, because the last time I got to see him was at his funeral. My cousin was a wonderful person and I miss him. Don’t allow this to happen. Accept the Gay/Lesbian community. Altough you may not agree with their sexual orientation, many in the community are the most kind and loving people you will ever know.

    Thanks J.

  93. Sydney

    @MissBlaze

As far as I know, the law is not retroactive in California, but I’m not sure. I know Ellen has been very vocal in her opposition and concern about her own marriage. I think Melissa Etheridge has also openly opposed the measure and she appeared on Oprah, I believe.

Also, Connecticut began performing marriages this week for same-sex couples.

  94. WTF!!!! Why she have to be gay?

  95. @JCB:

I know, and here was my response!

No one is saying that they’re not good people! Again, for the record: I harbor no ill will towards gay people! I do think that everyone is entitled to their own opinions though. Everyone is not going to see eye to eye on this issue. Ever!

  96. Sydney

    @MissBlaze

Here’s more info in an article that ran this week. Apparently, there are some lawsuits pending on the Prop-8’s constitutionality:

LOS ANGELES — The future of same-sex marriage in the Golden State will rest, once again, in the hands of its highest court. But this time, its fate will hinge on a different question: Can a state constitutional ban on same-sex marriage go before voters? Or must it go before the legislature first?

The answer, legal experts say, will determine whether gay rights advocates can overturn Proposition 8, a recently passed ballot measure that overruled a state Supreme Court judgment that legalized same-sex marriage.

Three lawsuits, ready since the initiative was green-lighted for the November ballot, have been filed with the California Supreme Court asking it to stop the state from enforcing the proposition until the court has decided on its constitutionality. The suits aim to undo the measure on grounds that, under the equal protection clause in the state’s constitution, a majority of voters are not allowed to revoke equal rights intended for everybody.

Now, nearly six months after its landmark decision, the California Supreme Court is being asked again to determine the fate of the nearly 18,000 unions made since May, and the possibility of those to come.

  97. @JCB:

    I also said:

I feel that Double trick has every right to say what he wants! It is his right as an American citizen! I may not agree with everything he may say, but I would defend his right to say it to the death! Here’s a news flash for you. I even support the fact that he went off like he did! If a straight man doesn’t want to associate with homosexuals, that is his choice! Period. Respect that man’s mind!

  98. JCB

    @ Daywalker:

I agree no one ever will. It will go with issues like religion, polictics and race.

    BTW, have fun in Vancouver.

  99. Sydney

What did Trick-Trick say? Isn’t he the thug who beat up that other rapper (forgot his name)?

  100. MissBlaze43

OMG!! Imitation of Life is on… Love that movie.

Mama, mama. I’m so sorry, mama. I didn’t mean it… I didn’t mean it, mama.

(Throws herself on her mother’s coffin)

    Sara-Jane, NO!!

Anyway, back to the topic. Thanks, for the response, @ Daywalker & Sydney, but I’m about to get into this movie. It’s on TCM if anyone else cares to watch.

  101. @Sydney:

True, but as you well know it is next to impossible to overturn a “Precedent” which has already been set! (Just Sayin!)

  102. Moreaces

    MissBlaze43

    @ sepia830

Hold on, hold on. Do you even know what the REAL issues are behind this whole Proppsition 8? Or are you just talking shit because you’re clueless?

    ===========

I think most dont understand the importance of it. Sad but true.. Just means there is a whole lot of work that needs to be done.

  103. Sydney

    @MissBlaze

I can’t watch that movie without crying! That’s a hard scene to watch. Excellent film, though.

    @Daywalker

I think they’re going to try as hard as they can to get this overturned. Who knows what may happen. . .

  104. @JCB:

    @ Daywalker:

  105. Sydney

    @Daywalker

FYI: “It is not clear when the state’s highest court will take up the issue, but experts say it probably will be soon, given that the legality of 18,000 same-sex marriages hangs in the balance. California Attorney General Edmund G. “Jerry” Brown Jr. said the marriages will remain valid, but legal scholars say that is uncertain.

  106. JCB

Trick and everyone else has a right to say whatever they want but at the same time, this may stop people from coming out of the closet. I worked with someone whom, although we all already knew he was gay, didn’t want to open up to us because he was worried what another male co-worker would feel and was worried it would have affected their working relationship. Is that even fair? Him being a homosexual is his own business and no one else’s. Why is it that we as heterosexuals can go around freely and open about our sexuality and a homosexual cannot?

Anyone can have an opinion about but be careful about who would affect personally.

  107. @Sydney:

Like I said before, It is next to impossible to get a decision overturned, once it is law. The Democratic process simply did not allow for them to get that which they sought!

  108. JCB

    @ Daywalker:

Oh ok. I would pick Australia over Vancouver anyday. Oh yeh, I guess I should have said that I’m a woman. LOL!!

  109. Sydney

    @Daywalker

OK, I get your point. I don’t think these national protests are going to cease, however.

Now what is it that Thuggy Trick-Trick said about gays?

  110. Sydney

I’m more inclined to believe that those 18,000 marriages will be null and void! Judges typically do not like going against each other because it disrespects and countermands their authority when they do.

I have worked with homosexuals while I was in the Navy. I didn’t ask about their preferences because it was truly none of my business! 111. @JCB:

It’s okay, Canadian women are hot!

  112. @Sydney:

He went off on a tirade of how much he disliked homosexuals. It was basically a diatribe on how he felt, and I don’t think he should be persecuted for exposing his views, but we all know how the media gets down!

  113. MissBlaze43

    @ Daywalker

Do you live in NY? Because we voted on Term Limits and guess what? Ol’ Bloomy got them to overturn that and there’s a great chance that Bloomberg will serve a THIRD term as Mayor in NY. How did THAT happen?

  114. @MissBlaze43:

Actually, I live in Louisiana, but as I have stated before, it is next to impossible to overturn a precedent once it has been written into law. (Just sayin’!)

  118. memchee

@JOEY B……agree wit cha. Still, I’m surprised to hear that she is gay.

these people should be able to live their lives as they please, as long as it doesn’t cause any detriment to me.

Unfortunately, yes, I think that was a huge part of it. That and the ‘favors’ that he’d given… they all had to go along with what he wanted.

But, on the bright side, the gay community are in high places, too, we’ll see a change in this situation, too.

  121. @Sydney:

I’m more inclined to believe that he just doesn’t like gay people. I think that he was just a little too disrespectful, vocal and overbearing in his attempt to voice his opinion on this subject. The same could be said of me at times! If I am passionate about a subject, it is sometimes hard to relay your thoughts without being brash and insensitive to others. I am somewhat guilty of that at times myself, but I say what I feel I need to to get my point across!

You know, I get so sick of women like Karen and Sepia830 talking about gay issues “being thrust upon decent straight folks”, when they know damn well that if Sarah Palin had her way, they would have had to keep babies conceived by rape or incest. They would no longer have control of their own bodies. And if that happened, I know that they would be on the frontline of every march and rally to overturn it. And God forbid if anyone said to them anything as asinine as “stop taking up valuable time and space with that bullsh*t!”

  125. Sydney

Should be subjected to the same violence they commit against others.

I agree — I just think it’s highly hypocritical to deem one group to embody “unsavory” characteristics when the same individual has demonstrated pathological problems that are a true danger to other people. I happen to think that criminals carry much more risk and immorality than people who happen to be gay.

  130. Honut Sonti

What is the big deal! Wouldn’t you want your child or family member to find someone to love and be loved in return, gay or straight? Heaven knows, its hard enough finding a life partner in the straight world. More power to everyone!

@Miss Blaze 43>>>It’s not that she’s sitting there and taking it, but she can she do? It’s about power (just like racism), and when you are outnumbered, there’s not much you can do. I know she wants to be transferred to another department, but until then, when your boss and co-workers are gay and you’re the “odd person out” you don’t have too many allies.

@Daywalker>>>Yep! I cosign. I actually hate the term “homophobic” and I think it’s unfair to put that label on people who don’t agree w/the lifestyle. The word it denotes fear; however, I don’t think fear is the issue.

  135. Encyclopedia Brown

Do Californians hate gay people? I figured you were the most tolerable, but now I’m confused…

  136. Marquis de Sade

I live in California, and I voted NO on Prop. 8 due to its unconstitutional merits. In all likelyhood, the Supreme Court will overturn it again because there is nothing in the Constitution that says Gays can’t marry.

The only way to prevent gays from enjoying the same rights as Heterosexuals, is to add an amendment to the Constitution, which won’t happen due to the morality and political fallout that will ensue. This country will just have to grow up and accept the fact their whole “EQUAL BUT SEPARATE” dogma is not intuned with reality.

  137. Mock Rock Star(Mock Rock loves U)

damn…I thought her and Dave Chappelle were going to get together…so who is her girlfriend…oh well, like someone said earlier, “No surprise here”…I remember Bossip saying in the past, “Here goes Wanda with her no checking for men look”

  138. Mock Rock Star(Mock Rock loves U)

    gotta go shower

  139. BeReal

Good for Wanda for having the courage to speak up

I am always at a lost at why the black american struggle (400 years of slave trade) is compared to EVERYONE’S CIVIL RIGHTS! I mean really all minorities benefit from the fight of the black people in concern to civil rights. As far as I am concerned people can marry who they want and lets not get into taking people’s rights because then someone may want to go back and reverse some other shit

Anyway gay people ca go through their entire life never being mistreated, however, I don’t know ONE black person who can say the same. These issues are separate in my eyes, gay people need to fight the good fight just like black people and just like women, just like Jews and stop trying to stand on our backs.

I am sick and tire of all these minorities shunning us but standing on our courage becasue they refuse to ban together and go through the struggle! that goes for latinos (hispanic), Asians, Gays, and what other people are classified as minorities but you hardly hear a peep from them!

  140. Nyah Molineaux

I personally think Wanda was a good comedian before she came out (especially on Chris Rock), and she is a good comedian after she came out.

I think it was good for Wanda to come out. So often we like to say black vs. gay community. But the gay community is part of every racial and ethnic group and I am glad Wanda and other Black LGBT people is showing that reality.

  141. Mock Rock Star(Mock Rock loves U)

    Gay people are hilarious!!!

  142. uglybug

The gay lifestyle isnt natural,it is an acquired taste!Exposure to certain influences especially at a tender age makes or mars a being.

I beleive the gay lifestyle is immoral and should not be condoned. The more noise made about, the more relevance it gets.

Californians voted against it and I hope other states will. Let us rise and condemn such indecent acts.

Gay rights to me is freedom of speech taken too far.If it is true that Preident elect Obama supports Gay rights,I will be utterlly dissapointed in him.

Im not American, but I am black. Gay rights and the civil rights movement cannot be equated and no attempt should be made at doing that.

Sexuality is a mundane issue, and should be left at that level.

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and says “AFLAC” with 2 snaps up and a lisp, then it’s a gay duck – BA DA BOOM!

Seriously – I do not see why there is so much heartache about being married when in most states they can become legal partners. Also to force institutions such as the church to perform rituals that are meant for a man and a woman is just silly.

I have issues with the vote in that many opponents of Proposition 8 are blaming the Black population with its passing by saying over 70% of Blacks support the ban on gay marriage. Even with the surge of new voters, Blacks were still a very small part of the total voting block in California.

I believe that a person’s sexual preference and activities are their business but this one is not my fight. I, for one, am strictly dickly, but do you, Wanda, do you.

  166. Dec28

The claws seem to come out everywhere…

I’m in a relationship with a female and have been for the last 8 years…I don’t necessarily want to get married, but I have lesbian-coupled friends why shouldn’t they be able to??

But this is the thing…the marriages were legal…so why make it illegal now when 13,000 couples have already said “I do.” And as for saying “I do”…the divorce rate for heterosexual couples is 50%…so instead of defining what is or isn’t marriage, we might want to focus on how to preserve the relationships that we have.

And as a Civil Rights buff and someone with a strong interest in the movement’s impact on black people, I must admit that it’s disturbing to see that some people don’t understand that CR relates to all people…not just black people. Someone asked why did so many black people vote against it…you’re not seriously wondering about that, are you? It has been my experience being raised in the church that you could do almost anything and be forgiven…except be gay. So I have relatives who are adulterers, gamblers, alcoholics, terrible parents, etc….but they are supposedly better than I am (with a good job, home, a few degrees) just because I have a girlfriend? Whatever!

The point is…live and let live people…that’s all I’m saying.

  167. Karen

@RICHIE, Abortion was, indeed, outlawed for many years UNTIL IT WAS OVERTURNED. NOW…If abortion rights are put to a vote and THE PEOPLE vote against them, I would NOT be in the streets trying to overturn a DEMOCRATIC VOTE!!!!

Most women likely just go underground and get underground illegal abortions or carry those rape babies to term and ADOPT them out. (And let’s be real the VAST MAJORITY of abortions are NOT the result of rape).

There’s a difference between PALIN making a singular decision about abortion and THE PEOPLE, REGISTERED VOTERS like MYSELF doing so.

Again, there’s no parallel between the two.

  168. Rozza♥ - Introducing My Sweet Dog Hannibal (Nibbles)

@Dec 28: I know that just about everyone in the Black community had a flamboyant uncle, or an aunt who lived with her “friend” for two decades. Or the extra spicy choir director. But no one hated them or tried to alienate them – it was assumed that what they did was their own business. Why wait for the institution of marriage – go do the legal stuff and to hell with all the tradition!

  169. Karen

@MIZZBLAZE, your comparison between Prop 8 and a NY governor’s term is also flawed.

Did THE PEOPLE VOTE against the extension, only to have him respond “To hell with what y’all say, in the words of Effie, ‘I ain’t goin!’”?

It’s scary to know that a movement is beginning based on, “Well, look at the governor’s term. Maybe we can just protest and change the outcome of any DEMOCRATIC VOTE that we don’t like!”

  170. J. ANderson

Good Wanda for putting it out there. My thing is if u dont want to call it “marriage” for gay people then u can call it something else. But they better have the same rights & priveleges as married couples because if not that is blatant discrimination.

  171. Yomina

Who is this Wanda Sykes anyway? Never heard of her.In any case she looks like a man, maybe she is one?

  172. Karen

    @TXHUSTLA15,

#1IGNORANCE IS NO EXCUSE! It’s the VOTER’S RESPONSIBILITY to understand the issues before heading to the polling place.

Y’all examined Obama’s and McCain’s policies before making the decision to pull the lever for one of them, didn’t you?

Having said that, I found myself in that booth being asked to vote on propositions I wasn’t ready for (MY bad!), but I READ the prop and deliberately CAREFULLY before filling in that bubble.

Any voter who cannot do the same shouldn’t be at the poll. Come back in 4 more years when your reading comprehension skills have improved.

#2 People have EVERY RIGHT to campaign on an issue–yes, even from another town, as they realize one state’s law could set a precendent for their own.

What they did was no different than what Obama and McCain did. Filling up my TV and voice mail with their propaganda. Again, it’s MY job to listen and create an informed decision–or IGNORE because I’ve already made up my mind.

Believe it or not, most people already know where they stand on hot button topics and out-of-state campaigning doesn’t affect them in the least. You’re giving those Mormons too much damn credit.

Trust, I know. I campaigned for Obama. And those McCainers were not caring about what I had to say.

    @MissBlaze43…

I did not accuse you of changing your name, so what the hell are you talking about?

    @MissBlaze43 & Moreaces..

Both of you have accused me of being clueless or not understanding the importance of the proposition as it relates to the constitution. I’m not clueless, but you guys are obviously bitter hypocrites.

Let’s get this straight. I am not gay, therefore I cannot fully understand how gays feel about this issue. It’s not a big deal to me because it doesn’t affect me. Just like white people can only sympathize with black people but will never fully understand the real struggle because they are not black.

You are hypocrites because if Prop 8 had not passed and its supporters were protesting you would be saying the same thing I’m saying–the people voted and their votes should count.

As for Wanda Sykes, she wasn’t funny to me before and she’s not funny now that it’s been confirmed that she is a lesbian.

  175. @Karen – Heh ignorance and the american voter..sadly dont have enough time to address that one , anyone that bore witness to this recent election cycle can attest to the issues with that. And yes we are probably in agreement with that regardless how people voted if they are uninformed or choose to reside in their ignorance that shouldnt be allowed to vote (hence one of the flaws in a democracy )

There exists state sovereignty under constitutional principles and per each states constitution, maybe in california that is how it is done , there will always be free assembly. Things are much different here in Texas though. I am not giving the mormons , knights of columbus ,other pro 8 groups too much credit they were very effective in their campaigning for this issue aside from their staggering fundraising in comparison to the anti prop 8 groups. This is backed by numerous articles aside from the empirical data that they are still analyzing that supports this premise

    @ DayWalker,

I get that, but in terms of their right to have the same priviliges under the constitution and not being granted is certainly something worth a discussion. One of the arguements I’m hearing is that the just want the same rights granted as citizens of the US, what’s wrong with that. When one speaks about changing the definition of “marriage” under the law, that’s we’re things get sketchy. Who am I to say what right and wrong. I practice my own set of morals and ethics, but that doesn’t mean everyone should have to practice my interpretation of whats right and wrong. That’s fair, that’s American. I believe everyone should live with the same rights and priviliges; that can’t be disputed.

  178. Razzell Dazzell

  192. I can truly say I am surprised by this…..Oh well to each on……

  193. Buck All Day

Marriage is between a Man and a Woman point blank. I am so sick and tired of the media saying that they are shocked that Black people voted to ban gay marriage. What they fail to understand is that Black people love them some religion. You can not compare the way Blacks have been mistreated to how gays are being treated. Again, marriage is between a Man and a Woman.

  194. Keena

Let me just say that if you think I’m going to let someone strong arm me into voting their way. It’s not going to happen. I really hate the way the Gay community is misrepresenting what’s going on. They’re acting as if Prop 8 took rights away from them. It really didn’t, I just voted that marriage remains a union between a man and a woman. They currently have about 90% of the rights of straight people. Do you hear them fighting for their rights? No, they’re fighting to redefine something that’s been defined by God, in order to suit them. Look you can be with whoever you want, and I want you to have all the rights but leave me and the word marriage out of it. Personally, the majority of my Gay friends do even care about the word “marriage”, they just want the rights. I really wish that’s what they should fight for.

Lastly, I think it’s disgraceful to protest a church. To me, it’s like protesting the Bible, but let them keep going. Because they are turning a lot of people off and if this ever comes up for another vote I have a feeling it’s not going to go their way again.

Besides, the Gay community here in LA has taken to calling Black Gay people the N word. So Wanda can come out if she wants, but she’s not welcomed in the LA Gay community. But then again, per my Black gay friends, they never have been.

  195. sepia830

  196. sepia830

    @Keena…..Well said.

  197. Keena

    Thanks Sepia,

The thing is, I’m not homophobic in the least and like I said I want them to have the rights but this national temper tantrum has got to stop. Personally, it’s their inability to compromise that they’re still missing rights. If they had put a prop on the ballot that said should civil unions (Domestic Partnerships here in LA) equal marriage this would be a done deal.

Personally, I hope that the California Supreme Court throws out Prop 8, like they did Prop 22 in May (keep in mind I voted Yes on 8), but if they do throw it out, I think it would have to go to the Supreme Court who can then make a decision on this once and for all.

  198. 8 inches of Chocolate Thunder

What a waste. I would hit still

  199. Rosie

I’m slightly amused/annoyed at all of the folks here claiming that the “democratic vote” is always the end-all-be-all of policy…if you look at any situation where a minority group gets rights in a democracy, it often comes though the courts because it is very difficult, if not impossible, to get a majority to vote in favor of rights that they don’t think benefits them directly. And the right of gays to marry WAS taken away with Prop 8 – over 18,000 gay couples were married in CA before this was passed.

The bottom line is, religious marriage and civil marriage are two completely different things. Marriage in the eyes of the church is between whoever that church decides they want to marry. As a Catholic, my church will not marry two non-Catholics, nor will it recognize a civil marriage as valid in the eyes of God. Marriage in the eyes of the state is between citizens. Gay people are citizens, and should be able to get a marriage license from the state. The end.

  200. are U guys serious

There is a lot of work to be done to educate the community about Civil Rights. When you deny the rights of one, you deny the rights of all. And, please do a google searh on tehe 1,128 federal laws on the books that protect people who are married. I cannot believe that any person, in particular a historically oppressed people, would not stand for protecting any other person’s right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. You do not have to change your beliefs on homosexuality…you may NOT deny any person their right as a tax paying citizen. And for the folks out there who think that a domestic partnership covers it, you are wrong. I for one will not stop speaking out for equality for all. Will you? by the way Keena, a tantrum you call it? Give me a break

You can’t put someone’s civil rights on a ballot. Yes i said civil rights. Some folks need to read a book, and stop assuming CIVIL RIGHTS is only associated with african americans. Its not.

Im not bothered if gays are allowed to the married. They don’t push their lifestyle on me, so why should i be bothered. Its funny that people are so up in arms about things….that really doesn’t affect them. And i also find it hilarious that so many straight people don’t want this to pass, but yet so many take marriage as a joke. And i also find it that some ppl only get religious when it comes to gay marriage….

It’ll pass eventually….when idk, it will

  204. Lady Architect

I’m not surprised since I always thought she was gay. Why put your name all out there now all of a sudden since you have been happily gay for years? Sometimes I wonder if these things are for popularity. I think that’s the thing that confuses. Gay people say that it’s not other people business their preferences yet there’s rainbows all over their cars, they have huge parades, and ever time someone says they dont agree with homosexuality the run out to blast someone when we all have our freedom to our opinions.

Anyways, everytime I see something about this opposition to the vote, I never hear the gay community talking about the actual rights. Even if they revamped civil unions to give equal civil rights as marriage, I bet there would still be a problem because they are called life partners. I really think many of them are fighting to redefine the term marriage. That’s why many people voted against it.

    what happened to my post?

  207. I am against gay marriage. I believe it’s inmoral, abnormal and a detriment to society. my heart and my convictions tell me it’s wrong and I would rather rely on my value system than outside standards.

now, what really gets me is that gays/gay supoprters are being so hypocritical about the results of Prop 8. What about if the ban wouldn’t have gone through? Would they still be saying the results are invalid because you cannot amend the constitution by a popular vote, only by the State Legislature. you may know this is the argument they’re making for overturning Prop 8.

in the end, I am resigned to the fact that gay marriage will probably become reality at some point in this country. but changing the law won’t change my moral standards and Godly belief that a woman and a woman and a man and a man a marriage does not make.

  208. not such a suprise to me

  209. richie

Karen, you are sadly mistaken if you think there are no parallels between the two issues. If you had voted for Sarah Palin, that meant that you believed in what she stood for and that protecting your reproductive rights was not an issue for you. Bottom line, you voted FOR her policies.

Maybe your reproductive rights don’t mean shit to you, so let’s try something that cuts closer to the bone. What if it was racial equality that was “put to a Democratic vote?” Would you “just go underground” to be free?

The parallel that you fail to see is that this is about a basic civil right. The Constitution does NOT define marriage as a union between “a man and a woman”. THAT definition comes from RELIGION, which then INFLUENCED the laws of states. And that goes against the basic tenet of “separation of church and state”. That means the church is free to define what marriage is IN THEIR CHURCH, but NOT when it comes to LAW! Religion is the basis of Prop 8.

    Let me say that again:

The basis of Prop 8 is RELIGION. The same religion that, not long ago, was the basis of amendments to stop Blacks from marrying whites.

Prop 8 is an AMENDMENT to the Constitution (again which represents THE BASIC RIGHTS OF *ALL* PEOPLE. Not JUST heterosexuals, not JUST white people, ALL PEOPLE!

Which means that if enough racists submit a “democratic vote” to amend Blacks’ equal rights, then the reinstatement of slavery would be right around the corner. Still think there is no parallel?

Let’s look at the 1967 case of Loving vs. Virginia:

The plaintiffs, Mildred Loving (nee Mildred Delores Jeter, a woman of African and Rappahannock Native American descent, 1939 – May 2, 2008) and Richard Perry Loving (a white man, October 29, 1933 – June 1975), were residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia who had been married in June 1958 in the District of Columbia, having left Virginia to evade the Racial Integrity Act, a state law banning marriages between any white person and any non-white person. Upon their return to Caroline County, Virginia, they were charged with violation of the ban. They were caught sleeping in their bed by a group of police officers who had invaded their home in the hopes of finding them in the act of sex (another crime). In their defense, Ms. Loving had pointed to a marriage certificate on the wall in their bedroom. That, instead of defending them, became the evidence the police needed for a criminal charge since it showed they had been married in another state. Specifically, they were charged under Section 20-58 of the Virginia Code, which prohibited interracial couples from being married out of state and then returning to Virginia, and Section 20-59, which classified “miscegenation” as a felony punishable by a prison sentence of between one and five years. On January 6, 1959, the Lovings pleaded guilty and were sentenced to one year in prison, with the sentence suspended for 25 years on condition that the couple leave the state of Virginia. The trial judge in the case, Leon Bazile, echoing Johann Friedrich Blumenbach’s 18th-century interpretation of race, proclaimed that

“Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, Malay and red, and He placed them on separate continents. And but for the interference with His arrangement there would be no cause for such marriages. The fact that He separated the races shows that He did not intend for the races to mix.”

The Lovings (the name says it all) won their case and the ban on interracial marriage was overturned. Ironically, Mildred died earlier this year. Her obituary contains this stunning statement:

“A modest homemaker, Loving never thought she had done anything extraordinary. ‘It wasn’t my doing,’ Loving told the Associated Press in a rare interview a year ago. ‘It was God’s work.’”

    ‘Nuff said.

This issue absolutely should be voted on because in my opinion, this is NOT a civil rights issue. Simply because marriage is not a civil right. There are many different “unions” that society has decided are immoral. The thing is now that homosexuality has gained acceptance in society all of a sudden this is a civil rights issue. It’s not, anyone who believes it is has been manipulated by the Gay community. Being Gay is and should always be an alternative lifestyle. This is about their CHOICE to date someone of the same gender and their DESIRE to force society to accept it. But as individuals, they each have the right to marry, they just want society to bend the rules for them.

My question is where does this end? Will 50 year old men who want to marry 10 year old girls claim that they are the new minority and their civil rights have been violated because they can’t marry who they want? This may be an extreme example but it does illustrate that not everyone who wants to get married can. Why? Because ITS NOT A CIVIL RIGHT!!!!! Society can and does have an obligation to make sure that society is “morally” sound.

I do however feel bad for the couples that were married, but in my opinion that is the fault of the CA Supreme Court. Instead of staying their decision until after election day, they jumped the gun and allowed Gay marriage knowing that this was against the wishes of the MAJORITY. So if they want to be mad at someone they can be mad at either the CA Supreme court or themselves because they knew that this could happen (it’s that whole beat the system mentality). However, just because they are not officially called “married” doesn’t mean they can’t have the same rights. They just haven’t decided to fight for them yet. I guess they will get around to it after the national temper tantrums. But I do not see renaming as removing rights. When people say that, they are just being dramatic.

Personally, homosexuality is and always will be a sin and while I do not judge them they can’t force me to vote against what I believe. Also, if you’re going to let gay people marry. Then you have to be fair and let all alternative lifestyles marry. You can’t say one is better than the other. So being Gay is no better than a Polygomist so if Gays are allowed so should everything else. It’s only fair.

Richie: So we’re going back to the born gay argument? Personally, I don’t think we should even go there because there people to back both sides. But even if we were to say that people are born Gay, since it’s obvious that that’s not the way God/nature intended (for obvious reasons) would you say that homosexuality is some sort of mental condition?

Dr. Funk: In an ideal world I would agree with you. However, I just don’t think that 1st cousins, Parent/Child, Brother/Sister etc. should get married even if they’re adults (I should note that 1st cousin marriage is legal in some states). Anyway, there are other examples but I’m getting sleepy and that’s all I have right now. So to answer your question, no I don’t think being over 18 or 21 should be the only needed to get married.

As far a the government being in the business of marriage, I would have to say yes. There are rights associated with marriage that are designed to protect us. So without government interference a man can walk out on his wife/child and never look back. It’s these rights that the Gay community is fighting for and I want them to have.

Although I really like Wanda Sikes as an entertainer, this doesn’t change my opinion of her.

But I am against gay and lesbian marriages because it is spoken against in the bible>

When these principles are chosen by a husband and wife in harmony with their relationship as born again believers, this brings about a Biblical marriage

“For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.”

    —Romans 1:26-27 (NKJV)

“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.”

    —1 Corinthians 6:9-10 (NKJV)

We cannot bend the principles of God’s Word to suit vocal minority groups. While some nations may enact laws permitting these evils, the true church of God must stand resolutely firm and never allow the sanctioning of same sex marriages by Christian clergy. No church that takes the Bible seriously can sanction a union between homosexuals or lesbians.

Now if we start letting everyone do whatever the hell they want and there is no line drawn as it has been said already, older men will be able to marry little girls as they do in other countries. Therefore, no protection will be there for children. Oh and lets not forget since you want all this gay marriage shit to happen and they let the men marry the children as well the gay men will want to marry the LITTLE BOYS. I don’t give a damn that i’m being harsh. Its the real. Oh but lets not trip cuz one of your children may be put in that situation and how would you feel if you could do nothing about it because IT HAS BECOME THEIR CIVIL RIGHT?! to marry you damn child!!!!! shit as far as i’m conserned gays/lesbians live better than most straight people I don’t see what the damn hopla is about. Only to come to the conclusion is you are moving based on your feelings and you don’t give a damn about what the future will bring and you care to agree to disagree. there is no reasoning with you but just as someone earlier said, keep on with you shit and making a fuss and protesting the church . what is meant to happen will happen the people didn’t vote for it then and they didn’t now. God is in control of all things so you may think you won something and in the end your going to loose in a much bigger way, and thats not directed to just gay/lesbian situations thats people and life period. also stop acting like every gay person did not CHOOSE to be gay. just STOP IT!!! YOU SOUND STUPID AND YOU TALKING TO PEOPLE LIKE THEY ARE STUPID AND CAN’T ADD 2 AND 2. THATS WHAT GOING TO MAKE PEOPLE THAT AGREED WITH YOU NOT HAVE YOUR BACK.

One of my friends was going to vote no on 8 but after seeing a palin dummy hanging from a damn tree in w. hollywood before the election and mccain coming out of flames on the top of the house, my friend said he changed his vote. They just laughed at that shit. It was evil and i’m african american. My friend is spanish. that pissed him off and it pissed me off and a lot of others. You are turning people against you by being so dramatic. You don’t know when to quietly fight and when to fight loudly. there is a time and place for everything. but since you don’t know that keep on with it. Its only going to get worse for you. then you will be back where you started when people were kicking your asses for being gay. you have come a long way now your destroying it with all this extra shit you adding on.

Besides, homosexuality isn’t the only other sexual orientation out there. there is beastiality and necrophilia(fucking the dead). What about their rights? Huh.Marrying a horse or a fresh kill should be on the ballot too.Waht do you think?

I just find it sad that people are worried about gays having the right to marry when there are children starving in this world. Gays being able to get married is not going to change the fact that we live in a sad world. Gay people have more rignts than hetero people who choose to be life partners and not get married! Yeah I know a man and a woman have the right to get married in any state at any time sure whatever! This just makes me sick because there are more important issues people in this country should be focusing on like education and making sure the children that live in this country are being fed and clothed. Not being able to marry your same sex partner pales in comparison to finding a cure for cancer, diabetes, aids and birth defects! I mean my question to a gay man or woman is do you really want a marriage that isn’t recognized in the eyes of the LORD? I know you all don’t want to hear it but GOD made man to marry woman not the other way around. Sure say the BIBLE was written by man go ahead, but the real truth is most religions and most faiths view homosexuality as a sin. Live that life if that’s what you choose, but stop trying to change the world and the laws to fit your lifestyle. I wonder if those gay men and women have this much passion about healthcare for those who don’t have it, or feeding the homeless starving people of the world!

“I mean my question to a gay man or woman is do you really want a marriage that isn’t recognized in the eyes of the LORD?”

Even Atheists can get married. Do they get the same rights even though they do not believe in God? YES! So what is your point?

We want the right to be married, not the right to join your church.

  256. Nubian_Goddess is back from Venus

I think it’s excellent for gays to be proud of who they are because the first step to happiness, is being true to yourself; however, I do not agree that they should unite in marriage. Marriage was created as a sanctuary between woman and man and in my opinion that is the way it should stay. I have gay friends who also agree and don’t even want to be married. If it ain’t broke, why fix it? Gay marriage has never been an issue before so why now? If they want to unite in some sort of “legal” union then don’t call it a marriage, call it a union or something.

I would hope that MLK would support Prop 8…after all he was a christian minister. The problem is that we don’t want to live in a society with limitations/rules/standards anymore. That’s why folks are always trying to take God/Christ out of everything(i.e. off the dollar, Xmas, etc.) While a “free society” may seem great initially, what do we sanction next polygamy, man/boy love, beastiality etc. Who makes the determination where to stop? How can the proponents of Prop 8 then turn around and argue that their rights to love is not as important as a polygamist, pedophile etc. Why does the gay community get the power to determine who can marry?

I think they want to have the same protection that you get when you marry (should their spouses die, they want to be the beneficiary, somethign that the civil unions don’t fully offer), they do not want to redefine it.

    @Anon E Mouse:

WTF does beastility and pedohilia have to do with same sex marriages? you can’t even begin to compare the two? what do TWO CONSENTING ADULTS who love each other have to do with the other immoral acts that you speak of?? Oh i guess you are a bible thumper, let me ask you this, are you living by the bible on Sunday? but yet smoke, party, drink and have pre-marital sex mon. through sat.? i’m sure you are!! If you aren’t going to walk the walk, then don’t talk the talk and i hope you’re in a long happy marriage!!

    @Exxon300:

Are you married? will you be getting married? or are you out there dodging your responsbilites as a black man creating children out of wedlock and planting your seed in various willing hosts?? YOu, i’m sure are not about getting married and being in a commited marriage, just like your homes right?? (LOL)(assuming you are a man). but yet you want to spew your hate for people that have been in long term relationships. so before you start with all that adam and eve BS, take a look at YOUR community and how they are doing marriage justice!! Why are so many black women single and so many black men not committing????????????????????

  271. SimplePleasures

“Everybody that knows me personally they know I’m gay. But that’s the way people should be able to live their lives,” she said.

Wanda, still love you, but please believe those who know you are personally aren’t the only ones who figured it out.

  272. Keena

@ Richie, seriously just look around you. Look at all the people who suddenly became gay (I’m not talking about Wanda because well….) but let’s take Anne Heche and Cynthia Nixon and on a real level, what about the people who I’ve heard say “I just fell in love with the person”. Are you saying this wasn’t a choice? We all have a choice of who we sleep with. If you want to say that it’s not a choice, I’d have to say that, that’s your opinion because again there’s no proof. You may not be aware of why you made this choice but it’s a choice none the less. As far as when I choose to be straight, that would be when I saw a boy? If you are, when did you choose to be gay? Probably have the same answer, right?

Anyway, with regards to the bible and slavery. I think the thing that has to be understood is that slavery wasn’t always the way that it was it was when Africans were enslaved. In the biblical days, slavery was closer to being a low wage worker. After the Black slaves, slavery had taken on the vicious and cruel nature of the 1600’s. It’s important to remember that this wasn’t always the case. It’s also important to note that during this time, slavery wasn’t a black or african thing as a matter of fact, race had nothing to do with it. It was classism during those days not racism. This is why you don’t know the race of anyone in the bible, but you know what they all did for a living.

Finally, standing up for my belief in the bible doesn’t mean I am a bigot. I haven’t passed a judgement on the lifestyle and I support equal rights. So anyone who has a problem with christians not supporting gay marriage have a problem with God. These are his rules and I don’t think it’s fair to say that because he’s set rules that you don’t agree with that it’s bigotry. That is just being dramatic and it’s also stereotyping people just because they don’t agree with you.

  276. RJ

how is the not a civil rights issue??

Homosexuals are being attacked because of who they are, the can’t help or choose it – they were born that way. I was born black. If there was “Prop 912901″ which allowed citizens to vote to bring back Jim Crow laws and it passed, I’d be up in arms too.

They have should have the same rights as heterosexuals – Sexual orientation shouldn’t matter in anything.

The level of homophobia in the black oommunity is frightening sometimes. We, as a people, should know that it’s wrong to hate or dissapprove of anyone simply because they’re different.

  277. Meeko From Detroit (Trick Trick is a male thug hooker for rent on 7 mile rd)

    1st of all,

this is sad…..as soon as black people gave the world their asses to kiss. we just denied another minority their rights.

you know all you bible thumping motherfuckers can burn in hell on leviticus and shove romans up your ass. how dare all of you quote bible verses when you all are breaking 8 of the 10 commandments on the daily. again i say. if god dosent condone homosexuality. then he dosent condone drug use, premartial sex, gambling, shellfish, disobedience on parents. and killing, stealing and cheating.

marriage should be banned cause people get married for the wrong reasons. all across the board.

plus trick trick is a male thug hooker who works the craigslist site for white dudes to fuck hard in the asshole.

    enough said………..

  278. DBoy

Congratulations Wanda. I wish you nothing but the best and commend you for living free.

Reading through these comments saddens me a bit. I don’t know how one group of people can look at another group and wish for the same intolerance and denial of civil rights that they face every day. “No one is free while others are oppressed”. It’s a quote I think we should all take to heart and realize the truth in it.

Homosexuals being granted equal rights is NOT an attack on the rights of African Americans. There ARE similarities and there ARE extreme differences in the civil rights struggles between us. The main similarity is the fact that we both have been and are being discriminated against under the law and face ignorance on all levels day in and day out. That is NOT right.

Of course, there are differences in our struggles. Does that mean one should look at the outcome any different? No. Like it or not (or believe it or not) being gay is not a choice. Even if it was a choice, does that mean someone should be treated like a second class citizen for it? I don’t think so.

We should know better than this. True, there is ignorance in every community. We sometimes think that the way to succeed is to stomp down others. That’s not the way. We need to start believing in HUMAN rights and work toward equality for all of us. That is the only way we will ever truly be free.

  279. Donya

Thank you Karen, I’ve never posted before today. CIVIL RIGHTS AND GAY PEOPLE GETTING MARRIED IS NOT THE SAME THING. All BLACK PEOPLE SHOULD BE OFFENDED OVER THIS BLANTANT IGNORANT COMPARISON. It is amazing that a minority of people will try to piggyback on the movement of an actual civil issue. Before we go and get excited a said a “civil issue”. I don’t understand why the gay black population keeps allowing them to make this uninformed lateral comparison.

  281. Keena

    @RJ

I have a real issue with the comparison of race and sexual preference (whether or not you believe it’s a choice or not it’s still a behavior tied to sexual identity). Also, saying that sexual orientation shouldn’t matter at all is really a dangerous road to cross. Remember Gay isn’t the only alternative to a hetero adult male/female relationship. I do agree with you that there is a lot of homophobia in our community but you have to realize that this issue isn’t about being anti Gay to a lot of people. It’s about following our beliefs. To think this is about being homophobic is to miss the entire reason for this standoff. Remember, even those of us who voted to keep marriage between a man and woman would’ve also voted for Gays having the same rights. Again, this isn’t about whether or not Gay people should have rights because here in CA they already do (they’re missing a few though but they do have all the basics, I’m not saying that’s good enough but I am saying that should be the focus). Quite simply as long as this is being presented as a civil rights issue and not what it really is ( a fight over the word “marriage”) this issue will never be resolved by the people and will have to be resolved by the courts.

    @ Meeko

You are entitled to not like Religion/believe in God but is it necessary to mock it? This is another reason for this standoff. There’s too much anger on both sides and it’s preventing people from seeing things from the other persons perspective. Also, calling a White man a minority is a stretch that my mind will not allow me to make. In the end, he’s still a white man, and calling him a minority because he likes men is a huge stretch. If this is a case, we will be having minorities popping up everywhere. I agree that no one is perfect and has the right to judge, but when I voted to keep it between a man/woman I wasn’t judging homosexuality, just following my beliefs.

    @DBoy

I hear what you’re saying, but when we start defining behaviors as something to be protected it’s a dangerous road. Let’s just see how passionate you are about this when the Polygomists start calling themselves a minority and make the same arguments the Gay community is making. I said this earlier, if you say it’s no longer between a man and a woman then it’s only fair to open it to everyone. Regardless of how popular or socially acceptable the behavior is, fair is fair. You can’t say Gay is ok, but Polygomy is wrong. It’s a lopsided argument because if you ask one of them they will say it’s unnatural for a man to be with just one woman.

AGAIN, GAY SUPPORTS NEED A NEW ARGUMENT PERIOD. GAYS ARE NOT GETTING THE FACT THAT ANYONE CAN ARGUE TO MAKE THEIR QUESTIONABLE BEHAVIOR RIGHT. THERE ARE TEEN PARENTS THAT WILL TELL YOU THAT THEM GETTING PREGNANT AT 10 WAS THE BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD. IF YOU TALK LONG ENOUGH WE CAN CONVINCE THE WEAK THAT BESTIALITY, PEDOPHILIA, MAN MARRYING SON, MAN MARRYING SISTER IS DESERVING OF RIGHTS. THIS IS BEING COMPLETELY IGNORED. GAY SUPPORTS ARE PUSHY..WHY BECAUSE THEY WILL NEVER BE SATISFIED. I MEAN..KEEP BEING A NATIONAL NUISANCE….BUT WHILE YOU ARE CALLING PEOPLE BIGOTS…YOU ARE A OVERBEARING BIGOT YOURSELF THAT DOESN’T RESPECT PEOPLES BELIEFS.

  288. DBoy

For Keena-I appreciate your comments but the comparison between homosexuality and polygamy shows that you (1) have no idea what it’s like to be gay and (2) have no interest in empathizing. I don’t think anyone would disagree that polygamy is a choice (polygamists and non-polygamists alike). Regardless, the issue at hand is a gay or lesbian couple who love each other being able to marry. We can choose to cloud the issue by throwing in every other situation we can think bears any type of resemblance (whether it does or not) but the issue remains the same. I understand that this situation would be a lot easier if gay was more of something you could SEE-if gay people shared physical features or had the same hair line, etc. Then we wouldn’t have to listen and learn so much. The fact that you are born that way and there’s no real reason to be treated any differently under law or in society would be a lot easier for some to stomach. But alas, it does take some type of human understanding and an ability to listen. Unfortunately, a heterosexual will never know what it feels like to be gay unless s/he looks within him or herself. Then they can realize how they’ve never really had to question who they are sexually, how they feel they were born heterosexual, how science can support all of these facts, etc. I guess it’s just human nature to concentrate on our differences than our similarities. It seems to make it so much easier to stay divided. And isn’t it better that way? (sarcasm on high)

For Blackgirl-Gay supporters ARE pushy. I sure as hell hope anyone fighting for injustice in this world becomes a little pushy. Wrong is wrong. No matter who it applies to. Period point blank.

  289. Ms. Educated

I think a lot of people, esp. Black folks, are upset with the comparison of the denial of the right for gays to marry and the CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT. I don’t think that many people disagree that all people, regardless of their sexual orientation, should be granted the most basic fundamental civil rights and liberties. However, I think a lot of people are disturbed by the use of the civil rights MOVEMENT by pro-gay supporters. While the Movement, later became one of fairness in all respects (wages, jobs, education), it started as a struggle for the attainment of equal rights for BLACKS in America and is most notably regarded as such.

Not saying that I agree with that viewpoint but I think that is the way a lot of anti-gay marriage proponents, especially those in the Black community, are looking at it.

  290. HoneyChile

By the way HoneyChile, here’s a freebee from me:

Let all who are under the yoke of slavery regard their masters as worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and the teaching may not be blasphemed. Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful to them on the ground that they are members of the church; rather they must serve them all the more, since those who benefit by their service are believers and beloved. Teach and urge these duties. Whoever teaches otherwise and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that is in accordance with godliness, is conceited, understanding nothing, and has a morbid craving for controversy and for disputes about words. From these come envy, dissension, slander, base suspicions, and wrangling among those who are depraved in mind and bereft of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain. (1Tim. 6:1-5)

Here a Scripture just to help you out Miss HoneyChile since your schedule is so busy:

“Let all who are under the yoke of slavery regard their masters as worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and the teaching will not be blasphemed. Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful to them on that grounds that they are members of the church.” 1Tim6:1-4

So as you can see, even Christians had slaves. They did not release them upon being baptized into Christ. Paul supported it and goes on to tie it in with “godliness” and the teachings of Christ.

    when the gays come out.

that’s not the point, miss hostile.

the point is, if they come out before their career is in gear, you trash will do your best to shun and destroy them, as will their employers.
