As you may have heard, Kanye West announced at the American Music Awards that he wants to be the next Elvis. Then West had to take it even further.
“When I said the statement, ‘I want to be Elvis,’ I really should have thought that out more because that statement was actually really incorrect,” West told E! News’ Ryan Seacrest Tuesday. “Actually, the true statement was ‘I want to be better than Elvis.’ “
So does West have what it takes to get anywhere near Elvis’ stratosphere? We talked to some industry insiders to find out…
“Kanye is one of the biggest hip-hop stars in the world right now,” says Emil Wilbekin, editor-in-chief of urban lifestyle magazine Giant. “But I do believe he has delusions of grandeur.”
Wilbekin goes on to say, “I think Kanye is hugely self-absorbed, and I think that he thinks he could be bigger than Elvis. Kanye is very much concerned with how big he could be, how much music he can make and how many awards he could win.”
It’s that oversize ego that’s propelled him to the top of his game, says Hillary Crosley, R&B/hip-hop correspondent for Billboard. “People find it so amusing that he takes it so seriously,” Crosley says. “If he didn’t have the ego, he wouldn’t make it as far as he has.”
Cory Cooper, a noted Elvis historian, says he’s impressed with West’s goals, but he needs a reality check.
“Even though Mr. West has a fantastic idea of what he aspires to become, he nor any other performer, past, present or future will ever accomplish Presley’s unparalleled career,” Cooper writes in an email. “Elvis stands alone. With all due respect to Mr. West, Elvis Presley is not called ‘The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’ for nothing.”

No one argues that West is a not a great musician, but Presley was more than just hit records. He not only crossed over into many genres (pop, rock, gospel, country), but he was also a true movie star. “He definitely needs to get himself outside of the hip-hop world in order to be spoken of in the same terms of Elvis,” says Chuck Arnold, music critic for People. “I think that’s what he’s starting to do with singing—well, what you would call singing with the help of technology.”Wilbekin agrees. “Elvis had gospel and country music behind him and Hollywood behind him,” he says. “Kanye just has hip-hop right now.
“He hasn’t really done acting, aside from Saturday Night Live.”
West did have a Hollywood project in the works. He was developing a Curb Your Enthusiasm-like series for HBO. However, it’s reportedly been shelved. “I think it was too hard-core for HBO,” writer and producer Larry Charles told ComingSoon.net early last month.
Billboard’s Crosley says with a laugh, “Maybe he’s secretly taking acting lessons.”
We could hear Kanye now: “I want to be the next Marlon Brando.”
Or as Los Angeles Times pop critic Ann Powers says, West should just be, well, West: “Kanye is excellent at being himself,” she says, “and he is unique, so maybe he should be happy with that.”
Sure, Kanye might just be reaching for the stars, but after all, this is America. You know, the place where a white guy can swagger jack from black men and become insanely popular and filthy rich? FYI, that white guy would be Elvis.

U shouls watch the documentary on Chuck Berry called “Hail, Hail, Rock & Roll.” There is a telling segment where Chuck, Bo Diddley, and Little Richard r having a roundtable discussion about how black artists were treated back in the day. As an entertainer and someone who is obviously passionate about his craft, as well as his aspirations, it makes sense to me that Kanye would want to be the next Elvis or more to the point, “Bigger than Elvis”. His statement suggest to me that he was talking about the “LEVEL of SUCCESS” Elvis had achieved, not that he’s interested in “emulating” Elvis.
Although I understand the resentment some of you apparently feel towards Elvis and his dubious beginnings he was in his day and for a long period of time to “MANY”, some still to this day, the “BIGGEST ENTERTAINER”(pun intended, lol) to ever do it. Elvis was even bigger than Micheal Jackson when Elvis was in his prime.
Regardless of how “you” or even Kanye for that matter, might feel about Elvis personally, it’s nice to see Kanye is “open minded enough” to realize how “HUGE” Elvis was and can respect his “STATUS” “AS AN ENTERTAINER” with hopes of becoming “even larger”.
Although for me, regardless of how you might feel about him personally, “SAMMY DAVIS JR” was “THE BEST OVERALL ENTERTAINER” to ever hit the planet.

2. Elvis’ style of music was black R&B with white country & hillbilly music. He added his own influences to the music.
3. Elvis never thought he was better than black musicians or called himself the “King.” The white media gave him that title. The white media purposely ignored black rock musicians. After awhile the black rock audience dwindled and returned to their R& B roots. If asked if he thought was the “King.” Elvis would reply “there is only one king, Jesus Christ.”
4. Big Mama Thorton was the first to sing “Hound Dog.” However, she did not the song. The song was written by two white Jewish guys named Jerry Lieber & Mike Stoller.
5. Everyone thinks Elvis Presley was racist because he was a white man from the South during segregation. People especially think he was racist from Public Enemy’s line in “Fight the Power.” Chuck D later cleared up that he didn’t think Elvis was racist, but the music industry that deified him and chose not to recognize black accomplishments. James Brown, Sammy Davis Jr, B.B. King, Ike Turner, Michael Jackson, Muhammad Ali, Cissy Houston and other blacks who’ve associated with Mr. Presley had nothing but positive things to say about him. Elvis Presley while he was alive did an interview with Jet Magazine to clear up the urban legend of what he supposedly thought of blacks.
6. Presley did not rip off black artists. In those days, artists covered other artists and it was assumed the record label & management took care of the royalties payments. Nine times out of ten, they did not. The labels made sure they stayed rich but did not care about the artist whose song was covered and the artist who covered the song. Whenever, a musician asked Elvis why they weren’t payed for a song he covered, Elvis gave them a either a thousand dollars, a diamond ring, or a luxury car. Elvis was just as much a corporate puppet as any musician of that time and even now.
All in all, Elvis Presley seemed like a good man (except for a couple human flaws), but is still today severely misunderstood by both BLACK and WHITE people. Hope this clears some stuff up.

In fact they were from all over the world and we were the majority of visitors there. There wasn’t any old white women who were from his era crying at his grave. It Was mostly young adults and families. Even the staff was basically all black and they weren’t there for big checks either. They work there because they respect him and feel honored to work at where the world’s most recognized human being once lived.
Elvis wasn’t no racist. The man hired many black folks during the civil rights movement and even gave half his Hollywood salary to black charities in the 60’s. How many rappers do that today? Elvis stood up for blacks and credited us as his biggest influences. You can’t call that stealing when he acknowledged us.
