This is gonna be hard guys. I LOVE the comedians on BET. I also LOVE the fact that they play my favorite show of all time, In Living Color. However, I do not believe in seperating ANY RACE in America. WE ARE AMERICANS! How dare we have Black History Month! In my eyes, the Native Americans deserve it MUCH more, seeing how we destroyed their ENTIRE SOCIETY. There are hardly any of them left! They also have been proven to have the WORST living conditions on their reservations. I want AN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH. One where we learn about EVERY race, ALL OF OUR LEADERS, EVERYONE! I think by having a month dedicated to one race, and not one for any other, is RACIST. Every fund set up to only help people of one race is SICK and RACIST.
Yes, I get it. Black people were slaves here once. You know what? That does suck some major balls, however, it is time to move the fuck on. Do we hear the Jews crying that they were made slaves for thousands of years? Do we hear them whine that they should OWN the pyramids in Egypt because THEY broke their backs making them? Do we hear them bitch and moan about Hitler, etc? (my hubby is a Jew)Nope, we dont. It’s time for us to UNITE AS ONE. I do not think that singling out one race, giving one race opportunities to go to college (I know a TON of poor white.asian, indian, american indian, etc etc that could use that too!), giving one race the EXCUSE to blame things on others for being whatever nationality they are, is a good way at making sure we NEVER kill racism.
I am over this shit. WE ALL CAME FROM ONE BLACK WOMAN FROM AFRICA, THAT is our EVE! It has been proven by science, and I stand by it. If any other race had a chanel dedicated to just them, we would think it was racist. If any other race demanded a month be set aside for ONLY them, they would be considered racist. I am NOT living by this double standard any longer.
Think I am racist? I am not. I know what racism is. I dated a guy named “Justin” in Junior high. Nothing serious, but I really liked him. He was the blackest of black…BEAUTIFUL skin, kinda like Alex Wek’s. He was handsome, and athletic, etc. I was called a nigger lover. But you know what? I was called that by a whole 2 people out of a school with HUNDREDS of students. THAT is why I am NOT buying this racist shit anymore. Let us teach or children that there is NO DIFFERENCE! We are all human. I hope one day aliens land and try to kill us. Maybe THEN we would finally realize that WE are ONE.
So, I will no longer tune into BET. This is going to suck, but I do NOT like the idea of having a chanel for only 1 race. In the year 2007 in a country that is supposed to be the most advanced and equal. This is unexceptable! I will also no longer acknowledge Black History Month. Instead, I will see it the way that Morgan Freeman does (I have the quote at the bottom of my last blog on Obama/jesseJackson, and OJ). AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH! I will read/watch/and learn about ALL the people who made a difference in this country.
I am asking you ALL to join me. Black, White, Indian, Asian, Russian, Australian, etc etc…..lets be AMERICANS together! What happened to the African American community was AMERICAN HISTORY, not BLACK HISTORY. If you want to celebrate in a way that excludes others and singles one race out, count me the FUCK out! I am soooo proud to be an American. I am SO proud that I have friends of every race, and none of us see each other as anything but what we are..people. Lets change Black History Month to 2 months of AMERICAN HISTORY. We will still learn about all the black leaders and people who made a difference….just not with the racist name of “Black History Month”. It has to start somewhere. I am going to do my part in making sure we are all treated EQUAL in a country that CLAIMS we are. NO MORE SPECIAL TREATMENT FOR ANYONE WITH ANYTHING!
It will never happen. At least, that is what many of you will say…FINE! My number one priority here is being able to die and know that I stood up for what I believed in, and that I did not add to the SEPERATION OF AMERICANS!! I love my country, I love the people in it. I love our history, good and bad. We should LEARN from it,not dwell in it and not move forward. That’s why I am done with this shit. You are all my brothers and sisters…..even if I think you suck ; ) As Bono said, “One life, with each other..sisters…brothers!”

that’s an interesting opinion. this post should get interesting. while i don’t agree with her entire opinion, i can respect it. i do think that there are some issues that she’s not being sensitive to and that she doesn’t understand because she hasn’t lived in this skin her entire life. and dating one black guy has shown her nothing close to what the black experience in America is like. it is always easier when you’re on the other side of the problem. she should have gone to jena or observed the way media would have rather covered britney’s *****ty performance as opposed to megan williams’ ordeal. then maybe she could understand the fact that we are not one America. She is talking about how we should have an American History Month instead of Black History – but what she is failing to realize is that EVERY MONTH of ALL of my schooling UP UNTIL I attended an HBCU WAS in fact American History. How are we going to have AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH when we already have American History ALL YEAR? Yes, the history of blacks in America IS indeed part of American History and should be included in American History – but again, what she fails to realize is that IT IS NOT. As blacks in American History, slavery gets glazed over and the numerous accomplishments get conveniently LEFT OUT. The same goes for other historically marginalized people (including women). I went to her blog to read the responses and some of those people are so hateful. How can we get rid of BHM when that’s the only time we learn about our past other than MLK? Why make an issue about BET when it’s been around for 25 yrs. and there are quite a few Spanish channels no one is arguing about? Adrienne had the nerve to say she check “Other” on forms but somehow I seriously doubt it.
What I think is interesting about the whole situation she presented to us is that the Smithsonian institute has museums dedicated to races that have been abused over time. The American Indians and the Jews. But there is not an African American history museum but we are not whining over that. Everyone has asked me every since I moved to DC have I visited either one and I stated as soon as the African American museum goes up thats when I will visit. Besides the Federal Government has set aside months for other minority groups such as I believe that May or June is Asian-Pacific Islander Heritage Month which is celebrated just not vocalized as much as African history month. There is also a Hispanic Heritage Month. I know because I sit on the committee of the ethnic observance table at my government job. Ms. Curry needs to get informed before speaking ignorance.

What I find sad is when these people with no talent and no reason to matter find a forum and instead of educating themselves they choose to use race a means for advancing themselves.
I hope all of those who bloggs on this site are informed enough around the historical accuracies of race and cl***** to know that we as a race have far greater issues to deal with than to address some wingnut who is dying for publicity.
What this teaches me is that there is a lot more racism in America than I had previously thought. I have been reading responses to her rant on other blogs and she has a lot of people from other cultural backgrounds identifying and agreeing with her statements. I think her statements are meant to be devisive and from what I have been reading that has been accomplished.
But we as a race must continue to maintain our relevance and not allow others to dictate to us about when and how to celebrate and teach our children about our history including all of our struggles that continues today and the greatness of our ancestors so we do not forget because history has a way of repeating itself. I was proud of our action on the Jena 6 issue we must continue to support the poor and disenfranchised amongst us.

There is a month for all ethnic groups, in case the ***** and all of her silly followers haven’t paid attention. The Native Americans were first to get a holiday in the state of New York in 1916. Blacks were next in the 1920s . . . There is a Pacific Islander Asian Month, a Women’s History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month . . . In fact, Daddy Bush signed off on one of those holidays in 1990.
And obviously, you all aren’t paying any attention to the Asian and Hispanic television stations!! While there is one BET, there are several Asian and Hispanic stations on my set!

I’m not even going to address everything she mentioned in her argument, because then I’m sure I’d probably write a book-length response.
Instead, I’ll simply challenge Adrienne to take a close look at the industry she chose to become a part of. All of the major fashion magazines scarcely put black women on their covers and when they do, it is 9 times out of 10 a black female celeb (the one exception is Naomi Campbell who can get a MAJOR cover here and there). Not even Alek Wek, one of the most popular models in the industry (regardless of color) can get major covers on a regular basis. And I’ve never seen Chanel Iman (the IT model of the moment who is half black/half Asian) on any of big covers.
Maybe if Adrienne looked close to home first, instead of looking at In Living Color on B.E.T all the time, she’d see that racism is sitting in her face. I dare her to dispute the fact that Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, or W magazine doesn’t book models based on color (for the covers and photo spreads).
I dare her to dispute the fact that the most popular fashion week designers showcasing their clothing all around NYC recently weren’t predominately booking models that weren’t black (with the exception of Heatherette). Even with racism in her face, she can’t understand why black people need things like Black History Month and B.E.T (though I personally don’t enjoy their programs at all)in order to make a statement that we matter too.
Network tv doesn’t have black shows and when there is a black show that premieres, it gets lumped together with all of the other black shows on the CW network (formerly UPN a.k.a the black people’s channel). We don’t get featured on CBS, NBC, FOX, and ABC. We’re lucky if there’s even one black person cast as a regular on any of the most successful shows. And you know it’s always at the most, 2 black characters and no more. So that’s why we have a B.E.T and a TV ONE. My only wish is that these two channels would have better programming for its viewers.
Adrienne can say what she wants, stand up for what she believes in, and think she has the solution to the problem that is racism, but at the end of the day she will never fully understand what it is to be a black person. Even when we want to just be a person, we’re always being reminded that we will never be equal because of the color of our skin.

Funny, when something is “all black” (even when it’s owned by whites…i.e., Viacom and BET), then *we* are racist. When the gov’t is PREDOMINANTLY white from the top down (save for a 2 or 3 well placed tokens); when the MAJORITY of corporations are PREDOMINANTLY white; when the MAJORITY of students at MOST universities are PREDOMINANTLY white; when the media is owned by PREDOMINANTLY white people (from Rupert Murdoch on down); whites have their St. Patty’s Day, Oktoberfest; Jews have Yom Kippur, Channukah, etc. AND they have gotten reparations for the Holocaust and are STILL receiving them!!!!!

Sad thing is it’s the only time when you education people (ESPECIALLY BLACK FOLK) about what our people have done. Otherwise they wouldn’t care. Out of the 60+ posts already here, many are filled with blind fury, and very few of them contribute to deep, honest dialogue about how to help enlighten friends, neighbors, co-workers, and others who haven’t lived through the experience of being black. For that matter, we could surely enlighten one another, because how each of us interprets black life, culture, and history is multi-faceted and hardly one-size-fits all. If you saw the girl on ANTM and the has-been shows on vH1, you would not be surprised, shocked, appalled, disgusted or whatever. The girl has issues. Stress on girl because she’s 23 years old, did drugs, inferred that she’d been sexually abused, family is extra hick, and is an a abusive relationship with some old. has-been alcoholic whose only accomplishment in life is playing one of the kids on Brady Bunch. Please do not buy into her “we are americans” mantra. Clearly, this is a tactic to hide her blatant racism and outright ignorance.
Notice she mentioned the Native Americans and claimed that they are “more deserving”. She then moved on to promote the lie that Jews don’t complain about anything.
She is not living under a rock and is quite familiar with other stations that are catered to the Spanish speaking community or members of the Asian community, however her issue is with Blacks. I say this because she acknowledges the plight of the Native people while telling black people that slavery sucked big ***** and to move the ***** on.
Apparently, like many American whites, she harbor a lot of racism and for the most part, is not even aware of it. She thinks that just because she screwed a black guy she is automatically exempt from being a racist – something she clearly is.

I agree with the “F” word thing. Regardless if you “agree” or “disagree” with homosexuality, demeaning a person for who they are is wrong, and for those who ‘disagree’ with it for religious reasons, the bible (If you’re Christian) clearly denounces man judging man.
Regarding the black girl thing: please acknowledge the fact that there is a STRONG need for more black families in every way shape and form, and that many black men date non-black women not because of “love” but because of complexes that are a result of racism and oppression. And the same goes for man black women.
(Diana Ross is a prime example: even one of her WHITE ex-husbands admitted she hated being black.)
I say that even though I don’t like Obama, I’m happy that he’s with a dark skinned woman. I don’t find that racist AT ALL. I think it’s a beautiful thing because as a light-skinned man of biracial heritage, and not to mention economically advantaged, he had access to all the “beautiful white women”, but he instead fell and love and married a dark-skinned black woman.. And in this society, part of being truly successful is marrying a “beautiful white woman”.
The black experience is different from the white experience, so I don’t think a white person denouncing interracial marriage is always equivalent to a black person denouncing interracial marriage.

I completely agree but just so you guys know Nationa American Indian Heritage Month is November, National Hispanic Heritage month is from Sept.15-Oct.15, and May is Asian Pacific American (APA) Heritage Month. So I feel where she is coming from on most things it’s just that Black history month is pushed more than any other. Also blacks are the ones pushing it. So asians, american indians, and hispanics start pushing so that people know that you have a month too.

I usually hate people calling my name out (generally because a lot of folks on here are self made experts).
However, I can appreciate people that know how to articulate their opinion without name calling and attacking.
I try to stay as neutral as possible and when I am in joke mode … I will get creative with my way of communicate when I think someone is effeminate. But that “f” word stings my skin. To me it is the equivalent of the “n” word. It represents intolerance.
With regard to black love, I am definitely for it. I can appreciate it. I just don’t find interracial relationships offensive. You love who you love. What does bother me is when folks make statements and the ONLY thing they are focused on is whether someone is black or not. Whether they are black enough, even.
I think some of our people have the ability to say and do the most racist things. That’s not to say that they haven’t experienced something that makes them feel that way. I just wish that they understand that it goes both ways.
You can’t call someone out for saying something that you perceive as racist, and follow it up with “that white *****” or that “white hoe”.

In all fairness, Adrianne probably has a lot in common with blacks, poor blacks anyway, because she herself was poor and lower cl***** until she won ANTM, got modeling jobs, then a reality show, then married to a rich, former child actor, etc., etc. but what she doesn’t have is an understanding of institutionalized racism and white privilege. So for example, if Adrianne goes to a show or shoot and sees one or two black models in a sea of white models, then in her mind, racism no longer exists. She doesn’t realize how she’s probably gotten more modeling jobs than a black model would,simply because she’s white, and she probably doesn’t even realize how much easier it was for to marry rich because she was white.

you and Adrienne are in the same boat (about not understanding institutionalized racism). Jews have had access to resources that descendants of American slaves haven’t. You ever hear of the term “Shylock” well he was this character in a Shakespeare play called “The Merchant of Venice,” right? Shylock was hated not just because he was Jewish, but because he was a money lender. Money lending or usery was something that non-Jewish whites didn’t like to do, which is why they let the Jewish minority do it and “Merchant” is set in the 1500’s.
LA’s Finest is right. A lot of foreigners that come here and open businesses over night probably didn’t have to worry about going into American banks for small business loans. They probably had access to some type of credit union or network, or connections from abroad to finance their businesses before or after they got here. If you’re a fifth generation African American, it’s not like you can just pick up a phone and call your relations abroad that you left behind when you booked that cruise to that States.

I’m just checking back in and actually, Chanel Iman is the most popular black model on the runway right now. I wasn’t talking about Iman the African model who has her own cosmetics line. Chanel Iman came up with her name by combining the original Iman’s name with CoCo Chanel. She did an article in Vibe magazine explaining why she chose those 2 names to make up her own. Do a search on Yahoo or Google if you’re not sure who I’m talking about.
The funny thing about this is that 99.9% of whites feel this way. I had an argument with someone I work with a few weeks ago about blacks having their own station. I had to point out that whites run all the other networks and do you seriously think that the submilinal messages of watching shows contantly where noone looks like you and when they do they don’t portray you correctly doesn’t have an impact on the way you see yourself and the way you ultimately behave. BET cannot totally be condemned. It is just that our culture is so much deeper and more broad than one channel can convey. BET is really the black version of MTV. The shows on both stations are not suitable for young viewers and is just mindless television but that is not to say it shouldn’t exist. We just should have additional choices…movie channels, news, entertainments, etc. like TV one and so on. In my city there are tons of Latino stations and there is even an Asian network channel. White people just will never know how it feels to any minority to see just whites on t.v…oh and by the way…when was the last time you heard a black person “crying” about slavery????? We cry about police killing young black men for no reason, not getting a job although you are overqualified, the looks and stares you get in a nice department store even though you might make more than any other individual shopping in the store at the time…lol

As a Black, non-descendant of slave, I must say:
1- BET is not serving well the Black community. The message conveyed by the channel is: be superficial and the true values of today are: fast life, fast *****, fast whatever… Plus BET seems to be nurturing the divide between light and dark skinned Blacks… Whether it is blatant, silent or obvious. I watch TV One for a change and more substance.
BET should be about embr*****ing the multidimension of nowadays black culture in America and elsewhere. Body shaking might be a part of it, entertaining is also… but i feel like there is something missing.
BET brought to life and to light people that had nowhere else to be seen. Today there are seen on MTV, VH1… therefore, there is a need to move on and to reinvent, to innovate, to convey another message… maybe something connecting the young generation to certain values that seem to be obsolete nowadays and help them to envision the future with more confidence.
I just have in mind the image of that young black kid from Ice Cube Black. White. He is BET/MTV generation, He is so disconnected with his past that he allowed White kid to call him “Ni%$&er”… What does the future hold for him? I also have in mind that great do*****entary; A girl like me: this is what BET should be putting forward. Entertainment and Education for people of African descent or anybody in need of understanding the Black culture.
2-Black is beautiful is an outdated message. Black pride is outdated as well. Black is not a shame or a stain. Black is an heritage that we carry on our DNA, our history… Black is an identity, cultural and genetic. We should not be proud of being Black or claiming that it is beautiful… it is obvious, and our inner and outer confidence, our past, present and future accomplishment shall say it loud, not our words. 3- On another matter, I must admit that, if it wasn’t for MLK, MX, and the others Freedom fighters, civil right movement activists, Black overseas (even Aborigenes in Australia) wouldn’t have found the strenght to chin up. Wherever you go in this planet, we look up at Black American for what they have done for the recognition of Black Culture, identity… etc…
4-Barack Obama have been vilified for not being a true African American, understating that he did not have the stigmatas of or eperienced slavery and its subsequent outcomes. I understand this but at the same time I don’t.
5-As a Black person living in America, I have weird feeling about the black community: first, the divide between dark skinned and light skinned strengthened by the community itself (as elsewhere in the black world) and second, divide between different black communities (Latinos, Africans, Caribeans…). Well I guess, these are different culture, but all of which make the universal black culture. I am saddened by these divisions.
6- As for what that Curry woman said, I guess, she is the product of White insecurity, unpopularity, opiniated ignorance and widespread fluffiness.
7- As for the jews, they all share the same issues, complex and self hatred (they have their share of dark skin, bossy noses, negroid features…) however, they keep it under wrap and keep excelling at what they are best: making money, gaining power, lobbying.
8-Black people have one big issue to solve: the color line… If only we knew that the Negroid phenotype (as opposed to caucasian) come in all shape, shades, size of nose, hips, lips, hue, texture of hair… and we stopped thinking that beauty or kindness of heart is a matter of hue… then most of our issues are solved… until then, we are stuck because we create division within our own community, we create skin-bleaching, we create self-hatred, we create insecurity… How can a man/woman can chin-up and stand up against open or understated racism when on the inside he has no confidence… or his/her community has publicly/inherently wiped it out of him?
9- When the skin tone issue is cleared and solved, the Adrian Curry of the world would not dare to make ignorant comments knowing that with all shapes and shades, united we stand.
10- Affirmative action inherited from Civil rights movement have benefitted to a whole lot of people, more than you can think of. People who openly denigrate Black community p***** themselves as Black to benefit from it. On another matter, none of the other minorities (exclusive of women) had fought as much as Black people did for their rights. These minorities will openly agree with Ms Curry, foretting that their status was upgraded thanks to those Blacks who died and suffered.
Well, that being said, I’m so happy to be part of my Black community and the Black culture… They are not flawless, they survived tons of attacks over the centuries… They will survive the Ms. Curry’s comments. Ms. Curry has only a 10th grade education. Therefore, she knowledge of American or world history is very, very limited. Anything she knows or wrote about is probably from excerpts she picked up while watching FOX Noise. But I will take a few minutes out of my time to make a few important points.
It is important that we have black history month just like we have women’s month, hispanic month, and breast cancer month…to educate ourselves about those issues that have never been brought to the forefront and so that we can all join in the fight for cancer or equality. To embrace and celebrate the brave men and women who put their lives on the line to gain equality for not only blacks but Americans.
My senior year of college, while posting flyers around my school about black history month, i asked a white student if he knew who Rosa Parks was and he said he had never heard of her. This is why we need black history month.
The quote that we’re Americans is the sort of the arguments that Stalin and Hitler would make. Why do you think Jews were exterminated, because they were not seen as Germans. There are people who agree with her but these people are blind and ignorant to the known facts. How many public schools have an extensive course about African American leaders, explorers, and major contributors to our history? American history is first taught in depth to 5th grade students and it doesn’t (never has) include the contributions of a huge number of African Americans. The fact is only a handful of Blacks get mentioned. Talk less of literature, poetry, politics, and science. Our people made major contributions to these fields. How many of these Blacks do you see in your childs public school textbooks?

Where do I begin? I want to believe that Curry’s heart is in the right place however skewed her perceptions might be. One of the primary reasons Black History Month was formed was because our children were not receiving an accurate accounting of “American History” in our schools systems. I agree with a lot of what she says, but there are some ifs. I don’t think Black History month would be necessary if it had been included as part of American history, as it should be. However, we all know that is not the case. Thus, Black History month. I disagree that African American’s had the most vengeance put upon them. We weren’t lined up and g*****ed to death, but every group is going to think they had it the worst. American Indians were dogged out by the white man too. But one thing American Indians have that African Americans don’t is some form of subsidized funding for their college education. I believe blacks deserve that as well. Someone mentioned affirmative action, well I live in a state that just banned affirmative action, so who knows how long that is going to be around. Interestingly enough, the person that initiated banning affirmative action is a black man, Ward Connerly.

As long as some don’t have a problem with the status quo, African Americans will never be treated as Americans. How can anyone in their right mind accept one month set aside for history to be taught? Why not DEMAND that it be included in the curriculum throughout the year.
History has shown us that many groups have suffered through the years, African Americans wounds aren’t any deeper than that of the Jews or the Native Americans. Besides that it’s pointless to try to figure out who has had the most atrocities committed against their people.
Instead of lingering in the past, why not look to the future, and try to figure out how to bring about positive change. How to teach young women to respect their bodies enough to not have children until they’re married. Teach young men that it’s not cool having babies by three or four women and not supporting any of them. Teach kids that ignorance isn’t cool, education is the best tool you can ever have and it can be used throughout your life.
People need to realize that it all comes back to family. When you have 64 percent of African American children born to mother’s out of wedlock, that’s going to create problems for society.

I have not walked in the shoes of those 12 young men but I know what’s it’s like to be discriminated against. I’m not knocking the Black Man’s struggle. Come on people!!! I’m sick and tired of this BS about ALL Black people being lazy, unemployed, and on welfare. That SIMPLY IS NOT TRUE. Don’t lump all people into one category. Besides, white people are the majority and that means if they are the makority then they (white people) have the bigger percentage of folks on welfare.
The reason for the majority of the Black “people” problem is because WE DO NOT STICK TOGETHER!!! It’s that plain and simple. When we become educated, we degrade those who are not instead of trying to encourage them to become educated. We spend half our time being critical of one anothers style of dress and hair styles. Take a walk across any school campus (be it elementary, junior high, high school, or college) that is majority white and most all the students are dressed super casual with their hair hanging or pulled back. Clearly, there for an education and not a fashion show.
Go to a black neighborhood and count the number of black owned businesses. Yet, we continue to buy products from people who degrade us and take our dollars back to “white” neighborhoods.
Once we achieve a certain financial status, we’re running after that white man trying to move into his neighborhood. He moves further and further away and the black man is still running behind him. Why not build our own “safe” neighborhoods and “good” schools. Why can’t we have neatly kept yards and tree lined streets and uniformed buildings in our neighborhoods? Why? Because we don’t work together and we’re still chasing that white man.
We make fun of the way our people speak and say there dumb and uneducated. Think people. Our ancestors were brought here from a place were the dialect was different and they had a different accent. So, yes our English should be different. It was handed down to us from a people who spoke another language and learned the english one. Remember, also that the english language wasn’t taught to them. It was picked up. We don’t call it ebonics when people from other countries mis*****ounce words in the english language (many of whom have lived in the US for decades).
Come on people. We have to stop putting one another down and start helping one another and embracing each other.

Let them know that it’s ok, TEMPORARILY, if they need it but don’t become dependent on it. Use these entitlements as a stepping stone not as a way of life.
And please people, stop supporting these ignorant, degrading shows that they are putting on T.V. in the name of entertainment. I’m all for a person making a living but not making a fool out of our race. And beleive it or not, people of other races thing this crap is indicative of ALL black people.
I know some of you will think i’m not seeing the big picture. Some of our people just want change. But, some will change with a little help and most importantly our children will start to change and as they grow, we can ACHIEVE major change through them. Black people are that nation, and we live in a society that now says, with a smirk and disgust, “get over it.”, even when remnants of this past still exist. People say “get over it” because there is no justification and no answer that allows someone to respond to this without losing face. And they’re tired of feeling at fault with no means of absolution. And you just wholeheartedly join into such narrow-minded beliefs. You listen to another white woman say “get over it” and instead of not becoming another black person made ashamed of recognizing their past, you become one who’d rather *****imilate to the mainstream and dismiss it as ridiculous. The past of African Americans in this country is slowly but surely being erased from the mainstream record books, and you’re expediting the process.
Jewish people have a history of being enterprising when it comes to business. They also have daily reinforcements of history and faith because of thier beliefs. These are just two reasons why they can be seen as better situated than other races when it comes to organization and generally understood and practiced standards.
A person who sees little value in the past and embracing history is one without identity and guidance. In a country increasingly rich with diverse cultures, do you really believe African Americans would be better off adopting a principle a cultural self-hate?

Now that I think about it I’m not sure when black history month was started but it is a nationally known holiday along with MLK day both of which had to p*****ed and recognized in the legal system, majority white men. I say all that to say that adrianne should be writting letters to our president if she has a problem with BHM and all the other months dedicated to specific groups, i.e. Womens History month and national clergy appreciation month.

You make some good points but I don’t think this generation is weak I think that a lot of blacks want to bring up slavery to justify events today without really thinking about the life of a slave. They worked contantly, no freedom, no rights, you have to ask permission for everything. Blacks today should work harder than any other ethnicity out of appreciation for the people who endured slavery and to ensure that the people as a whole continue to move forward.

Wow…Now, I have to say this…Not all white folks think this way. Unfortunately, the reality is that black folks ARE treated unequally, and there is just no way around it, so no,I’m not gonna sit here and complain about lack of scholarships for white people. Truth is, it IS hard to get a scholarship if you are just an average white person, unless you are directly decended from immigrants or veterans, or if you are disabled. Just because I was born with light skin, I seem to have advantages I didn’t ask for in this country, so WHY complain about POSITIVE things people are trying to do for folks who weren’t born into those advantages. I think part of the problem is that she’s a little too comfortable…meaning, she grew up in Joliet right? OK, I went to school somewhat close to there…Lotta black folks at my school and hers…The problem comes in with that familiarity, that feeling that, because she grew up with black people, that she’s “down” enough to say what she is saying. Most of my friends growing up were black..my step-mom and subsequent family is black…I spent summers in “Wild Wild Hundreds” of Chicago (South Side) and yet and still, you wont hear that 6 letter word that starts with a N come out of my mouth, because its negativity and furthermore, I just don’t have the right to say it…but it amazes me how kids, white kids I went to highschool said it all the time in p*****ing to their black friends. My only problem with BET is how we are represented on that channel. Turn it out nine times out of ten and it is videos which reflect black men and women in a negative light, but we defend that channel and how we deserve to have a channel for black people. I have to thank Adrienne for giving her opinion because she opened up a dialogue that will probably never be resolved on a blog.
The truth is every descedent of every race or ethnicity should tell their story of injustice to future generations in order for future generations to appreciate the sacrafices made in the past. Sharing your history should not be considered “whining” or “leaning on the past” because every story from the past is relevent in today’s society. The problems of the past influence our lives every day (if you don’t agree…try watching the news). Many people in the past have lost their lives in an effort to make a better life for the future. Shouldn’t their stories be told? I also noticed that when certain responders discuss african americans, every possible negative connotation comes to mind (prison, rap videos, teenage pregnancy…etc.) But what about the positive things that happen in the african american community that continually go undiscussed (such as the contributions made by african americans for the betterment of our society, or increasing percentage of our young black men attending college, or TV One…an african american television station that shows a well-balanced represenation of the black experience). In my opinion, if you only know of the negative…how can you give a fair and impartial opinion on the subject?
And as for Jena 6….
The media has done a good job of watering down the facts of Jena 6 to make the children in question appear as violent young thugs beating on one defensless white youth. I think that maybe you need to get over it as well. Just as Adrianne has the freedom to express herself, those who oppose have the right to disagree do as well. And me being one who disagrees…I have to say that I don’t give any person power over my thoughts or opinions…they are as they are. Unless I am reading incorrectly (and I am imperfect…) I have not read of one person who willingly gives anyone power or authority over them (beside their creator…of course), but you are missing the point. Certain influences on society exist whether based upon influences from the past and whether you realize it or not many of those influences on society are based on racisim, cl*****ism and gender (I won’t even deal with other issues that exist…). I don’t believe that any race that has been discriminated against chooses to be singled out due to their differences. It is the CHOICE of the person who distinguishes the difference that makes the distinction.
Yes, it would be a perfect eutopia if we could all embrace our similarities and ignore our differences, but it is not the person being discriminated against that brings those differences to the forefront, it is the person that chooses to consider such differences as something that separates that individual from society at large that needs to change his/her way of thinking.

Also I’m glad to see that despite me not commenting after 5:50pm yesterday afternoon I was still on your minds enough for both of you to respond again. My points are simple. People need to take responsibility for their own actions. There is complete equality in this country. Each person black, white, asian, native american etc. has the “opportunity” to succeed. Not the right because of what the people who came before you did. It is up to each individual to take that ‘opportunity’ and make something of it. Yes it is true that some cultures have more obstacles to overcome than others. I completely agree with that, but you can stil succeed. No one can keep you from getting what God has for you. Some cultures, as a whole, are doing better than others.

KK,you forgot to include the third K in your moniker. Black history month exists because blacks were the largest racial minority in the US when the history month was established. African Americans are also largely responsible for the civil rights victories that non-white minorities and women currently enjoy. That’s why we get a month.

Ilish……….You can give blacks the credit for the civil rights movement, BECAUSE I dont think anyone else is trying to take credit for that. Blacks were treated by far the worse out of any minority, the other minoriteis didnt really need a civil rights movement as much as blacks. And I DO enjoy the rights I am given today, but I am not going to say that it is because of blacks that I have rights.
Oh but you’ve already admitted that you have rights because of blacks,KK, in giving blacks credit for the civil rights rights movement. I think the reason why you are reluctant to admit that, is because you may not realize the magnitude of the movement and the opportunities it provided to women and minorities, such as yourself,that wouldn’t have been made available beforehand. Two of the largest inventions or victories of the movement were Brown v. Board in 1954, which was a blow to segregation or Jim Crow laws which condoned Seperate but Equal, and affirmative action, which came about in the 1960’s. I think Kennedy may have been the first president to allude to it, but I know Johnson enforced it with the Civil Rights Act in 1964. And you’re wrong about other minority groups not needing civil rights. Most minorities and women had no legal recourse when faced with discrimination in every venue from the workplace to the cl*****room. The African American civil rights movement was the template for the Chicano migrant workers movement, the Americans with Disabilities Act, etc.,etc. How many Asians were represented in high profile positions before the Civil Rights Act was signed? How many women? So you see, the Civil Rights movement had more far reaaching implications than you realize.

Everyone needs to stop being so offened when someone wants to celebrate their cultural difference, or set aside a particular time (a month) to educate everyone about the history and contribution of certain races. Racist is describe in the webster dictionary as based on racial intolerance, discriminatory, especially on the basis of race. I do not hear Adrienne complaining about the Gay Parades or other separate cultural or sexual events and celebrations. I do believe Adrienne is racist but her racism I believe comes from a point of ignorance not hatred.
Too bad she let her emotions get the best of her by writing a very deameaning, accusatory letter to Tyra Banks, otherwise Tyra could try to help educated her even more. It is ironic that Adrienne would not be where she is today or even know the husband she has if it were not for a Black woman, but she does not even remotely understand the plight or struggles of the African Americans. Not that Black people cannot let the past go but being enslaved for over 400 years and having other races come to America on their own free will, has alot to do with it.
Do you tell a child who has been molested to move on, or a woman who has been abused by her husband for years to move, or someone whose family has been murdered or someone who ecounters racsim on a daily basis to move? Do you tell the Jena 6, Mychal Bell, who has been tried as an adult when he is a child, who has been in jail for almost a year to move ont? Do you question Cino de Mayo? Hispanic Hertiage Month? Green Day? Asian Pacific Month? Chinese New Year? The Gay Parade?
The first step to healing is to stop the abuse. When Black peolple are continually being treated unfairly, blamed for the N word misunderstood, held under a microscope and be subjected to people who have ingnorant paradigms such as Adrienne Curry it is difficult to just get over it.
