TI on the Cover of Black Men Magazine
For Your Viewing Pleasure, News, TI
Posted by Bossip Staff
T.I. is on the cover of Black Men Magazine with two scrumptious individuals on either side of him. During the interview with BMM he said, “opportunities present themselves and I take advantage of them.” Looking at the pic above, we won’t argue that point.
More pics of TI and the two chicks in an interesting position below.

*****ody sees a problem with the fact T.I. is on the cover of “Black Men” with two women, other than Tiny? You’d figure the magazine would want to present T.I. in a respectable manner. These chicks belong in his videos, not on the cover of “Black Men.” *****-backwards, I’m just saying.

They have children (how many kids is it now?) together, and they’re not yet married? *clutching my pearls*
Boy, his stock is rising by the minute, isn’t it?
I can’t even admire bad boys from a distance — I’m disgusted. There’s nothing “admirable” about them.
Now a brother who actually fits this magazine’s bill of “strong, positive, and caring” is what I consider attractive and should be admired.

Well, it would be more than a little ironic if Essence, for instance, used Latino/Asian models for its annual men’s issue, for instance, given the magazine’s focus on black women and black culture.
But I think that this cover probably reflects the types of women T.I. showcases in his videos (Not that I watch them, so, please correct me if I’m wrong).
@Man

Ok. The magazine is called “Black Man” and apparently has a feature of the sexiest black women alive… but there is an Asian and a mixed/barely black girl on the cover? Not to mention the man on the cover is married. THIS is a picture of EXACTLY what is wrong with us.
You don’t see whites, asians, and blacks on the cover of latino magazines. You rarely see women of color on the cover of GQ and Esquire. WHY oh WHY are blacks the ONLY race with absolutely no loyalty to our own???

I told ya.
Black women are no longer the object of desire for black men. We are not beautiful enough. Our hair doesnt dry after 10 minutes of getting out a pool. Our noses arent pointed; but wide. Our hair is not always down our backs. Our complexions are not always light skinned. Our eyes are not always hazel or some other color. We can give thanks to videos for that.
This is what my breakdown is for what these black men like as far as looks in women.
1) She must have a fat a**, thick thighs, and ample *****. (I mean, we all know that men are visual and sometimes, very, very simple men) It doesnt take much to arouse and excite them. While possessing these physical attributes……she must also have:
2) Cacausian features (i.e hair, nose, lips (sometimes), and anything else superficial that men like to see.
3) They have to be mixed with something ELSE but black. Chinese, brazilian, asian, etc….
Its like…..they dont want a white girl. But if they can find one close to it with a black womens body, then I’m sure they would act like the sappy house negro when the master asks to bring more tea. Showing all 45 of his white a** teeth.
This is why I dont date black men. Other men in other races appreciate a black woman more than our own men do. And I dont have time to sit and wait for a “black prince” after him and his horse byp***** me to pick up the lighter skinned princess with the wavy, jet-black hair. I tell them from the jump that I dont date black men and probably never will. Aside from being overly materialistic and boring (to say the least), they dont excite me mentally. Probably only physicallt because they ARE always dressed (that much I can say). But once that dwindles, I need substance and most of them are just carbon-copies of the previous dude, so I know their mental is lacking in the “intellectual” field.
Anywho…..I am a nice-looking female and I have no problems with meeting any type of man but right now my choice in not black men, since we are not the choice for them. Hey, I’ve seen some cute asians though! lol

If you notice you NEVER see a black man come to the defense of his black woman. They are the main ones calling black women haters, hoes, *****es,ugly, fat etc. Not ONE black dude has got on this thread and said, he appreciate his sistas. Each and every thread about a black man that comes up, I guarantee you a sista got his back in some kind of way. From TI & Nelly, to Obama.(I havent heard one black man say something nice about Michelle Obama) Some ***** above just said alex wek and serena were ugly, and their are no more pretty black girls to use in magazines. I swear there are alot of jiggaboo, self hating ***** *****s on bossip.
I wonder how their black mothers would feel about that? or maybe that’s the problem, it’s not being instilled in the home from the beginning. We to busy telling our kids to be in sports and music instead of how to proud of themselves and what they are. SMH.. WOW

Also, Talley-B and others, PLEASE stop with the “we are keeping ourselves open” and “not limiting” bull*****. Let’s keep it real. Being open-minded to love despite color is one thing, but when OUR culture is persistently pumping this non-black beauty standard down our throats something is wrong! It is sad when you have to search for black women in black videos and in black magazines. 70% of ALL interracial couples involves a black man. That is FAR MORE than being open. That is expressing a preference. Please.

It IS your fault you let yourself get programmed and you are too delayed in your thinking to do anything about it. You have let the media dictate to you what is desirable (by the likes of this magazine’s cover) instead of following your own judgement. When questioned, you reach for stereotypes that were force fed to you by the media in order to justify your thoughts. To each his own though. Keep “getting by, getting laid and getting paid”……follow your ambitions. I will follow mine…..with a Black woman by my side.

Is anyone really surprised by this cover? Come on, look at the featured topics on the magazine. It’s a sex magazine and not meant to stimulate anyone intellectually. If you want something with substance you have to keep searching. Magazines like this aren’t going anywhere. That’s like wishing the strip clubs away. It will never happen. Personally, I like TI, but this shyt is a turn off. As far as there not being a black woman on the cover, I don’t really care because at the end of the day it would just be one more sista reducing herself to ***** and ***** just to be the flavor of the month.

Basically having something positive to say about a woman that shares the same culture as yourself. I’m speaking from what I see and hear.. But when the shoe is on the other foot, I never hear a black man say ***** about how all black women are not like that. I guess to me, I see alot less loyalty in black men. I’m not saying you cant see beauty in other women, but it seems as though they dont see any in their own. and when they do it’s always a woman that’s not all black anyway, which is kinda insulting. I’m not telling anyone who they should like.
But if your black and dont find other blacks of the opposite sex attractive, I find that to be a little disturbing. If a black man is digusted by black women, what does he think of his mother or black women in his family?

I wish I knew how the meme of “if you want to date members of your own race, you’re limiting yourself” got started. I’m a black woman who prefers to date black men — I, in no way, shape, or form — view that as any sort of “limitation” or “restriction” that is hindering me in some way. To me, the inference behind the sentiment of “limiting yourself” is that somehow one group is not enough — in this case, black women.
I skimmed through most of the comments, and they’re reminiscent of other conversations on Bossip, and the underlying theme is pain, and, to a degree, rejection. And that’s what I think is getting lost in the discourse.

Here are some facts from the book, “The Black Image in the White Mind,” which looks at the portrayal of black men and women in the media, versus white men and women. Please pardon the length:
“The Black Image in the White Mind” – a wonderful book and multiple award winner, written by Robert M. Entman and Andrew Rojecki, discusses the effects of life in a segregated society. It offers a comprehensive look at the intricate and subtle racial patterns in the m***** media and discusses how these powerful images play a significant role in shaping the attitudes of Whites toward Blacks. White Americans, they show, learn about African Americans not through personal relationships, but through the images shown by the media. In addition, they reveal a subtle pattern of images that communicates a racial hierarchy (with Whites on top) and promotes a sense of difference and conflict.
Entman and Rojecki illustrate how the television news focus on black poverty and crime is grossly out of proportion with the reality of black life, how use of black ‘experts’ is limited to ‘black-themed’ issues, and how ‘black politics’ are often distorted in the news. In short, they conclude that although there are more images of African-Americans on television now than ever, these images are often harmful to the prospect of unity between the races.
A brief summary of some of their findings are listed below:
A mug shot of a Black defendant is 4 times more likely to appear in a local television news report than of a White defendant
The accused is 2 times more likely to be shown physically restrained in a local television news report than when the accused is White
The name of the accused is 2 times more likely to be shown on screen in a local TV news report if the defendant is Black, rather than White
“Telegenic” figures aren’t always the most representative leaders though they are presented as if they were. Some statistics from 1994:
40% of Black adults stated that Jesse Jackson represents Black people “very well”
Only 11% of Black adults stated that Louis Farrakhan represents Black people “very well”
22% of Black adults stated they had “never heard of” Louis Farrakhan
Stories about, or soundbites from, Jesse Jackson on ABC World News: 13 versus stories about, or soundbites from, Louis Farrakhan on ABC World News: 25
The media sowed discord during the affirmative action debate of the 1990s despite the considerable common ground between Blacks and Whites. Reporters often predicted affirmative action would be one of the key issues in the 1996 election because of the “rage” among Whites.
A mere 1% percent of survey respondents named affirmative action as their top priority in voting against a presidential candidate
61% percent of White men (“angry” or not) favored affirmative action programs as is or with reforms
76% percent of White women favored affirmative action programs as is or with reforms
Somehow only 12.5% percent of White “persons on the street” were shown to support affirmative action in a sample of network news, while the percentage shown to oppose was 87.5%
While Black actors are now more visible in films, it is an open question as to how well they are being represented. Compare, for example, how Blacks and Whites are portrayed in the top movies of 1996.
Black female movie characters shown using vulgar profanity: 89%
White female movie characters shown using vulgar profanity: 17%
Black female movie characters shown being physically violent: 56%
White female movie characters shown being physically violent: 11%
Black female movie characters shown being restrained: 55%
White female movie characters shown being restrained: 6%

Therefore, when a brother encourages sisters to open themselves to other races, it’s a smack in the face to many because to a number of black women, their ideal mate has, and always will be, black men. There is a degree of historical perspective that ties into this — if you look back over centuries, black women have been involved in interracial relationships, but they were forced. My great-great grandfather was a white slave master who fathered a son with a great-great grandmother and sold him off while keeping his mother. This scenario occurred in many of our families.
I believe a number of sisters are keenly aware of the divisions that were created through the bonds of slavery and want to keep the relationship with black men alive and intact. Not to mention, we’re just attracted to brothers, physically and mentally, and feel that bond is stronger than that we could create with men of other races (or in my opinion.) Thus, when we are told we’re undesireable by men who share our complexion, it is, indeed, a rejection, and with rejection comes pain.
Now I’ve seen first-hand on Bossip how that pain can manifest into anger, as with certain posters who shall remain nameless (but we know whom I’m talking about), and I think there’s an unspoken sense of “why don’t our own men want us?” that permeates through some of our discussions. We know that Eurocentric society doesn’t view us as “beautiful,” but when we feel that brothers echo that same thought, suddenly, it seems the whole world has turned against us. In the past, through the worst tide of Jim Crow and discrimination, brothers and sisters had each other for support and validation.
It’s not that I think the sister who rails against black men hates them — I think, she, in fact, loves them and feels some deeper emotion that is not being adequately or appropriately expressed.
I hope this makes sense.

“The question is whether the “portrayl” of black women has an effect on the dating habits of black men.”
Let’s start with the visions of beauty of black women in popular culture. It’s no secret that a number of us are conditioned to think that blackness is somehow inferior or unattractive. Thus, some feel — subconsciously in some cases — that a darker-toned woman, for example, is less desireable than a lighter-toned woman. I think someone mentioned the impact of music videos earlier, and I see the effects of colorism clearly in the steady stream of women who look like carbon copies.
If you’re a person who lacks a sense of social/cultural conditioning, there’s no question that the constant bombarding of certain “types” as beautiful is bound to affect your own perception of what’s pretty or what’s not.
People other than African Americans are also impacted by the Eurocentric view of beauty. There are Asian women who have surgery performed on their eyes to make them larger, African women who use skin iighteners, and Latinas who view themselves as unattractive if they have a darker skin tone.

Hi Raquel26, Illuminate
@Talley-B
“QUIT LIMITING YOUR PREFERNCES!!! THAT IS WHAT YOU ARE DOING, NO MATTER HOW YOU LOOK AT IT….”
That’s what I’m trying to explain you — You, as a man, may view it as “limiting,” but a number of sisters do not. They see everything they want and desire in their black brothers. They want to marry a man like their father who will share a common heritage and struggle. To these women, the reverse may be true — It would be consider “limiting” to date men of other races because the bond would be weaker and the understanding would not be the same. It’s not about being anti-white, anti-Asian, or what have you, it’s about being with the mate who best reflects you.

No, it makes a lot of sense to me.
I think the problem is this “when we feel that brothers echo that same thought.” Only individuals can control or change how they “feel” about something. I’m glad you put numbers up in a previous post. Again, the majority of black men date and marry black women.
Why are black women so sensitive to the thoughts and actions of so few black men??????
It’s funny you think the sister that “rails” agaisnt black men “in fact loves them” and has not “appropriatley expressed” it. Don’t you think the same can be said for some of the brothers on here that make detrimental comments about black women?

When I hear brothers say “we don’t care if you date outside, in fact, we encourage it,” I hear, we don’t really want you, so do what you want. That’s why there’s this visceral reaction that often turns a discussion into a vitriolic argument in which nothing is resolved.
Men and women communicate differently — When a sister says “brothers don’t support us,” what she means is that she wants to be told and shown by black men that they truly love us.
We’re putting each other on the defensive when the lines of communication could flow more smoothly.
At least that’s my take.

“Why are black women so sensitive to the thoughts and actions of so few black men??????”
Because it feels that it comes from more than a “few” black men, and perhaps there aren’t enough positive comments to counter the negativity. When a certain poster goes off on one of her tirades, I’ve noticed that more than one sister quickly jumps in to oppose her statements. I think some sisters would like the same defense struck in their favor when they’re the target of negative generalizations.
“It’s funny you think the sister that “rails” agaisnt black men “in fact loves them” and has not “appropriatley expressed” it. Don’t you think the same can be said for some of the brothers on here that make detrimental comments about black women?”
Yes, I definitely think there are some brothers on here who feel that they have been wronged by sisters in some way, and their anger is indicative of a deeper emotion. I know some men tend to use anger as a mask for pain (as do some women).
I think I’ve ststed on this board before that if we — meaning black men and women — hated each other so much, we would’t converse at all. We wouldn’t care what the other thought or said. We care because we care about each other.

and see, that’s what i’m saying, that’s my point. you don’t know your soulmate is and where they are from, until you are actually with them. black women on here are blaming the black men, but in honesty, they are the ones who are cheating themselves. i know that they look at it in another light, but tell me this: if you look at a frog in the front, and look ar in the back, does that mean that the frog is going to change to a chicken??? no!!! women can’t so narrow sighted, you have to see stuff for what it actually is. that is the ONLY way that you find true love, i repeat, the ONLY way. and you know what??? women on here are acting like it’s no good black men anymore!!! it’s a lot of them, but if you looking for a good black man inside a man with a habit, one that has a history of cheating on his girl, and constantly calls his women a *****, then 9 times out of 10, you are going to be disappointed. that’s like going outside while it’s raining and not expecting to get wet. and one more thing. I love black love, but i am also open to other love. there’s nothing wrong with it. is it true that just because a black man is with a white woman means that he thinks his black mother and black women are ugly. hell no. he just found what he was personally looking for. it’s not always the case that when a black man is with another race, that he deosn’t have love for his on kind. that’s not even logical….

But, you know, there are brothers — and some sisters — who deliberately, and actively, reject their “own kind.”
There are also brothers and sisters who find genuine love with individuals who happen to be a different race, and I wish happiness to anyone who finds it. But when a person feels the need to demean members of his/her own race to justify his/her choice, that’s where the conflict ensues. If a man says he dates white women because he thinks black women are uattractive and unruly (and has no problem publicizing it), that speaks to a deeper issue. The same goes for sisters. And this could all stem from a place of hurt, and, in that case, there should be a recognition and focus on healing. Because if you’re not a whole person emotionally, how can you be the best mate for anyone, regardless of race?

Skin whitening may not have started with European dominance, but the Eurocentric standard of beauty certainly plays into the decision of a number of women to physically alter their appearance. I also read a news article recently about the prolific use of lighter-toned models in advertising in India. Those with lighter skin are considered to be more attractive.
“Do you think anything can be “universally” attractive? (universally is debatable)”
Interesting question. I don’t know if there’s any “universal” characteristic of beauty, but I do think the Eurocetric standards is considered dominant, i.e. lighter skin, thinner nose, hair of a certain length and texture, etc. And popular culture reflects these images — Most romantic leads in movies/TV shows are white women.
Going back to the media study numbers posted above, not only are black women not as visible in popular media as models of beauty — The images that do exist are overwhelmingly negative, i.e. the loud sister who uses co***** language and displays unladylike behavior.

LOL, in this case, it may be art imitating life — or maybe the reverse — because, as long as I can recall, Eddie has always dated mostly lighter-skinned women. The problem with ‘some’ black men/women is that they hold their spouses accountable for their relationship failures, instead of taking responsibility themselves as well. They don’t extirpate/eradicate past, subjective experiences; some take these pessimistic, mental and physiological thoughts into new relationships, rather than dealing with their frustrations and severely, deep wounds. The key is learning how to alleviate/mitigate pains before becoming involved with the next significant other. This could result in a healthy, lasting relationship, and an interpersonal connection.
Then there’s the self-loathing black man that acts as if he’s suffering from extreme need or anxiety to be noticed by people of other races, rather than his own. They look in the mirror and hate their visible reflections, so, they deviate from women that have similar physical attributes that they do indeed possess, and intense hostility proceeds or arises, resulting in the abasement/vitiation amongst their counterparts. They also define pulchritude as European features (nose, hair, eyes, etc.), and anything other than this is unacceptable, not prominent, and spurious in their own eyes. My tolerance level is extremely low for self-abhorring individuals.

@ Sydney, well you know most of the time Denzel and Eddie didn’t do their own casting (with the exception of Eddie probably, sometimes). Hollywood usually pairs a dark complected man with a light complected woman. It surely influences the way we perceive beauty, which is not as universal as you think. If it was we would all be wearing those giant Ndebele neck rings that they wear in Africa, or we’d all be scarring our faces, etc. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I truly believe that a lot of this light skinned/ dark skinned crap goes back to Midevil european standards where having fair skin meant that you had the luxury of sitting inside all day as opposed to the common people who had to work in the sun. Kind of like a social-cl***** thing. But there is something to be said to that effect about fairer skin being feminine because the men would be outside working more than the women, or skin being likened to youth. But now you have white people killing themselves with tanning beds so who knows. We’re all *****ed in the head. I say do what pleases you.

When it all comes down to it, it more about superficalality. Mindless people tend to follow trends rather than critically thinking and evaluating their choices and options. If mixed asian and multiracial women are the trend, then the mindless individual will go for that rather then getting to know the person. They have no true self definition or distinction. The black men magazine are no dummies they realize that what’s marketable sells. It’s sad that they are capalizing off of ignorant and socially unconscious indiviuals to make bucks. But hey that is capitalism. I mean you couldn’t sell these magazines to people who critical evaulate life because they would have so many questions for why this and why that is on the cover. My thing is not get angry but become aware and eduacate the m*****es

i didn’t say that comment, but however, i will answer it. we love black beauty, but like i said before, we appreciate ALL beauty…..whether the features are of another race or not. hell, if a alien came down here, and if she was on point, then we are going say that she’s on point. like i said earlier, we are not that difficult, we are simple. if we see something we like, we will admit that we like it…..

“Hollywood usually pairs a dark complected man with a light complected woman. It surely influences the way we perceive beauty, which is not as universal as you think.”
You’re right on both counts. Oprah actually did a very interresting show recently on how beauty is perceived across the world, and she talked with women about what is considered attractive in their countries. The beauty “tips” ranged from jewelry and other adornments to skin whitening and hair extensions (other countries, not the U.S.) to one country in Africa (I forgot the name) where overweight women are actually considered the most attractive, so women actually intentionally overeat to gain weight (I think this shocked everyone in the audience, including Oprah).
“You can take that perspective but you can also take dark skin to represent vitality and health. Dark skin = more melanin = better muscle tone and skin tone. Scientific fact.”
Oh, I don’t doubt this. You probably already heard the saying, “black doesn’t crack.”
On the history of house slaves and field slaves, this refers to the different cl*****es of men and women during slavery. Slaves who worked in the fields were considered to be of lower status than slaves who worked in the house. House slaves tended to be the children of slave masters, which generated a sense of superiority that, centuries later, still affects color divisions within the black community.

Brother, are you saying that the negative portrayal of black women hasn’t seeped into our daily lives and perceptions? I’m going to refer you to some of the posts on this very blog.
Heck, Michelle Obama had to battle the “Angry Black Woman” label during the campaign, and she wasn’t even running for office. Cindy McCain has much more dirt on her — and it has been reported in the past — yet Michelle, an Ivy League grad, wife, and mother who has never made waves in the national press before, was demonized.

I actually wanted to get into the weave issue, and you brougt up a point that was mulling around in my mind. I think some sisters invest in hair extensions because they have been conditioned to — and told — that men find long hair attractive.
Since you’re in Europe, can you share more of your experiences? You’re not the first sister I’ve heard say that a brother told her that he was attracted to her as an “exception.”

true, and this is perpetuated by the media. casting directors will only cast dark skinned models if they are requested, otherwise they go for the stereotypical european watered down appearance we see above. But if they had a couple of sisters who looked like Serena, there would be nothing but complaints. Yung Berg is doing a Flavor of Love type reality show, were he has requested casting mostly brown and dark skinned models, he go so much flack about his dark butt comments, he’s trying to make mends. So why a lot of people think speaking up about it is jealousy or whatever, I think it is important, otherwise nothing changes and people accept that as beauty when there are so many more exotic examples of black beauty, but hey I haven’t seen the inside of the magazine they may have everything from bi-racial black and asian beauties to blue black amazon stallions. It’s all about education. Here in Cali, LA is hella color struck, Oakland not at all and in Sacramento you better be only half black, lol.

Ok. To play “devil’s advocate” did you hear the “entire” infamous Yung Berg interview? His comments were made after the interviewer referred to him as “lite bright.”
Was his response ridiculous? Yes. Do I think that he truly believes them? No, just an emotional response. Again, not an excuse cause it was as ridiculous as the day is long.
As far as the “self hate”…. maybe. How do you “define” “self hate?” Everytime a woman of another race/culture is appreciated by men they are accused of “self hate.”
Now, for the magazine… are you familiar with the magazine? I *****ure you there are plenty of representations of dark women in that magazine on a regular basis.

I don’t know what kind of amends Yung Berg can make by casting black models for yet another show that inevitably going to depict sisters in a negative light. This seems to be another train wreck in the making, and if the recent comments attributed to him are true, he’s just as colorstruck as before, so nothing has changed.

They are either with a arabian girl (from marrocco or algeria) or a white girl or a mixed girl! So they just say that black girls are cute but they are played out lol!Or they say that we have a lot of character! a strong personnality! But just look at the women they are with! HUGGGGGG! Because beautiful non black woman date rich white men! obviously! I think we migh as well be the only race where the woman is stronger than the men!SO trong that they cannot take us anymore! Talk about a blessing! On the other hand, black woman are dating white men like crazy too! I used to think they were softer, more caring and loyal! i was so wrong! a d*ck is a d*ck

“Do these portrayls cause black men to “exclusively” date “non-black” women? No, not even close.”
But I’m trying to get you to see that these portrayals do affect the perceptions of some black men who choose to date non-black women exclusively. Not everyone has the same level of cultural awareness or the discernment to know that media images and reality are separate.
Case in point, on the blog I mentioned earlier on interracial dating, one brother, married to a white woman, said he took him years of weaning himself off television images to discover that there were beautiful black women. He wasn’t initially drawn to them. He said he had a barber (married to a Latina) who said the only thing black he wanted was a Cadillac.
These deep-rooted feelings are real, and they do, indeed, exist and affect some men’s (and women’s) dating patterns.

going with what plays in videos… I agree. And I want your opinion on this. Should we hold some of that blame if not all on our brothas that are the artist. They do have the power to let them know there is not enough representation of black women in their videos.
Just like this cover… I can see a young black man in his teens to thinks TI is the greatest. He likes what TI likes. TI is on this cover with two non-black women, okay barely black women. It is safe to say this is subliminally pumping images to our teens/young adults? Now we as adults know that this is a image and it sells magazines. But what about what it’s teaching. This is where these sterotypes and prefrences start from, isnt it? or what you do smart ladies think!

Hes doing too much for me right. Alot of brothers and sister feel like he does but they just aren’t dumb enough to admit but its show through their actions. I even had one trick tell me that she flat out thought that dark skin people were ugly and then turned around asking my black ***** for a favor. When I confronted her about the comment, she then tried to justfied the statement as a fact rather than an opinion. If I had low self esteem and wasn’t a very social conscious educated individual I would have been upset but I wasn’t I just pitied her. I know that when lighter skinned women are around her she must feel to a degree insecure and probably lose her mind around white women. Me I don’t have that issue

Ok. Now the question lies, to “what degree does this effect marriage/dating patterns?” in light of the fact most blacks marry/date other blacks.

I’m not saying she should be insecure (by no means), but can she demand a little respect? Guess in their siutation you can’t demand respect until you’re married.

Short ansswer: Yes and Yes.
“Should we hold some of that blame if not all on our brothas that are the artist. They do have the power to let them know there is not enough representation of black women in their videos.”
Did you watch Hip Hop vs. America on BET? I missed it but read some excerpts, and it’s clear to me that a number of artists are going to continue with whatever sells — whether it’s sexual images, violence, what have you.
But, we, meaning consumers, can choose not to support such garbage. And I don’t. If more of us did make a statement with our dollars, I think you would see a shift in the images because money talks.
“Just like this cover… I can see a young black man in his teens to thinks TI is the greatest. He likes what TI likes. TI is on this cover with two non-black women, okay barely black women. It is safe to say this is subliminally pumping images to our teens/young adults?”
I absolutely think this is sending subliminal messages into very impressionable minds. That cover screams this is what the good life looks like, and the women chosen reflect a certain image. They look racially ambiguous (particuarly the one on the right), and I’ve seen similar women more and more in popular media. I’ve even heard more blacks refer more to their “mixed race” ancestry — they have white or Native American ancestry — so it seems to me that it’s no longer enough to some to be considered just black. You have to have a little something else mixed in to be considered attractive, interesting, etc.
To me, we’re getting away, as a whole, from the idea that blackness in itself is beautiful. It’s equal. It’s powerful. It’s something of which we should be proud.

In my opinion, an extreme aversion is the result of the media. It’s been programmed in young boy’s heads (even young girls) that white is a form of purity, or free from anything that pollutes society. While on the contrary, black is equivalent to being enveloped in darkness, or something seen in a pessimistic light. This is why many black actors think they’ve arrived after they married white women (not all of them). Then again, I believe that character reflects your upbringing. What did mom and dad infuse gradually into the minds of their offspring? Many times, ‘some’ black people are taught that White Americans are above average or higher in the rank or status when it comes to physicality, intelligence, and even eloquence. So, they were taught what others believed to be accurate, or it was a form of pseudo-truisms that was p*****ed down by generations during several life spans. They are several reasons why these bad thoughts/behaviors exist.
I can’t remember the do*****entary. But, it was about young girls that didn’t want a doll that resembled their own features. That’s a prime example, but sort off topic.

I think it is part of the plan! In France, there is a channel where you can see “roots” and i guess when a man is deprived form his own integrity, his own rights, he cannot feel like a MAN! He is ashamed probably cause he could not help his sisters and mothers when they were being raped! And I guess, women lost respect for a man who cant do nothing for her!! In Africa, at least, in my country, women have the UTMOST repect or their men! Men has all the power but they have to deserve it! And he has to take care of his family and if he ever fails to do so, he don’t deserve no respect! I was shocked to realize how the situaton is really different in UsA with men that straight up abandon their family so of course,it is hard to respect a man who is tryng to escape his responsabilities?!

Ok.. I don’t know enough about Bryant Gumbel to comment although every black woman I have ever met despise him.
People may have “issues” for various reasons without it NECESSARILY being “self hate.” The example with the brother who has disdain for “beggin sistas.” It could be argued that he doesn’t like the poor, women, blacks, himself, etc. My point being just becaus it APPEARS to be towards black women doesn’t necessarily mean that is.
As far as the white women thing, outside of disfigurement the only reason one would get plastic surgery is to appease themselves. The only part I disagree with is that it to specifically “resemble black women.” Black women don’t monopolize fine *****ess and delicious breast (although they are close to owning the market LOL). Those qualities are appreciated in women from every culture. The same athletes white women throw selves at women from every culture are.

I think this is the dolls study you referred to — It was conducted for the second time recently by a young sister, Kiri Davis (www(dot)kiridavis(dot)com) who discovered the same results. Very disturbing:
In the “doll experiment” from the 1940s, husband-and-wife psychologists Kenneth and Mamie Clark asked black children to tell them which doll—a white one or a black one—they thought looked most like them, and which was good and which was bad. They found that black children identified with and preferred white dolls to black ones. They concluded this was proof of internalized racism. Their research later became cornerstone evidence in the landmark Supreme Court Brown v. Board of Education decision of Topeka, Kansas, which ended American school segregation.
In 2005, 18-year-old filmmaker Kiri Davis recreated the Clarks’ experiment with 21 young black children at a daycare center in New York. In her seven-minute do*****entary, A Girl Like Me, Kiri presented the children with two dolls—a black one and a white one. Then, like in the original experiment, Kiri asked which they would rather play with and which they thought was “nice” and which was “bad.”
As in the original test, Kiri found that most of the black children preferred the white dolls and identified the black dolls as “bad.” “I think those attitudes that existed 50 years ago are still here. They’re not highlighted, and they’re kind of on the down low, but they still exist,” Kiri says. “These children, even though they’re 4 and 5 years old, they’re kind of like a mirror and they show exactly what they’ve been exposed to by society.”

I personnally have a preference for black men! I remember when i was at school, i had a lot of white male friends and someone was complimenting my *****! (off topic lol). Anywayz, one day he told me that he was never attracted to a black female! But I did not feel attacked or that he was racist! I thought that it is normal that he loves white girl since he is white!

I seen that do*****entary. I think its called ” a girl like me” (i could be wrong) but it was a doll experiment. all the black kids *****ociated the white doll as being nice and pretty. All the black dolls were ugly and criminals. THEN, they asked the kids which doll looked like them, they all pointed to the black doll. The look on their faces brought tears to my eyes, they instantly had this look of shame and disappointed.
In my elementary cl***** (which was all black, few mexicans) but when we would get a transfer student that was white, ALL the kids wanted to sit by them because … get this, the white kid was smarter. Not realizing that “becky” was from the trailer park, and hadnt obtained any more education than we had. I was taught as a very young age(at home of course), to know better than this…. You mentioned divisions between black men and women, and I absolutely believe that these stem from subjugation in this country. Blaq actually mentioned recently that she’s reading a book on the impact of slavery on relationships between brothers and sisters, and I wanted to get the title because it sounds like a very interesting read.
During slavery, there were many occasions where the black man was forcibly removed from his family, so that separation has existed within our community for centuries. We were stripped of our language, our country, and our familial bonds, so, yes, it is no mistake that the repercussions of that trauma have existed to this day.

There inlies the key. As with all social behavior (negative or positive) the root of the problem is often found in the upbringing. If we collectively teach our children knowledge of self and give them the self esteem (and the know how) to overcome the programming of mainstream media then the subliminal visuals they see will not have the same effect. Simply put, the more time we spend teaching our children TRUTH and the less time we allow the idiot box to raise our children the better chance they will have of being free and critical thinkers.

You are very correct. The problem in households is they leave all the parenting to the school and the idiot box. Maybe for whites they can just go to school and that be it. But we are Black people living in a white man’s world, no matter how some try and cut it. So therefore we should be raising soldiers at home and not ***** ***** jiggaboos. So grateful when a white man hand you something, not realizing your earned it on your own. Start teaching black girls and boys the fundamentals of their culture and cut out all this un-necessary bull*****. Our kids go to school and come home and want to be dancers, or in sports. stop doing all this new age shucking and jiving for white people. and learn some physics, chemistry, and mathematics. like Nas said.. aint no *****s as NASA! I highly doubt posts count on Bossip are indicitive of anything of substance. “Jesus Take the Wheel” posts have received more than Barack or Oprah on occ*****ion. Go through a Kim K thread and you can count on your hand how many of the comments will be “positive” in Kim K’s favor. Men see her for what she is “T & A” and that’s it. Yes, we like that. Doesn’t mean that’s ALL we like.
I like Beyonce too but I’m tired of her posts too. She has at least 3 per day. What else is their to know about this woman? Seriously, do we need a pic of EVERY event she goes to?

But in his prime the ladies loved him. Women who didn’t know basketball wanted to throw their panties at this cat.
In the case of dark skinned men vs. light skinned men I don’t think it matters. From what I’ve seen it is mainly us men that have that “she gotta be redbone” syndrome. I don’t have a preference — I’m dated men of all shades.
I have a cousin who has bluntly said that she prefers to date lighter-skinned men, but I believe she has a complex about her own skin tone.
There was a good episode of “Girlfriends” related to this some time ago, involving Toni. She didn’t want to date a darker-skinned brother because of colorism she herself had experienced.

Exactly. Most parents don’t know what subject matter their children are doing in school but they know what their child’s favorite TV “program” is. Our priorities are all screwed up. Personally, I’m investing too much time to dispell the myths that my child is being taught in school to then turn her loose to the BS that is on TV. She says she feels left out when her friends are conversating about various TV programs (that aren’t even suitable for her age group anyway). I say “good”.

I’ve heard some black women say they like chocolate men, BUT I’ve never heard them place them above a light skinned one. Or outright not date another shade at all. Good men are too hard to come by for that bull*****. Now for the men, puh-lease… if they dont have a bad yella bone, they feel like they missing out.
90% of rap seperates black womens skin tones all the time.for example: I cant remember a song Pimp C has done without mentioning one. But we as women need to not deal with “*****s” anyway. I think Black men just want a good Black woman,I guess.(shrugs shoulders)

As far as the Brothas (adults) that I have encountered that prefer redbones (two come immediately to mind) one is dating a redbone (ironically, she isn’t attractive at all but I guess as long as she is light skin…idk) and the other is a male ho so I don’t think he really gives a damn when it comes down to it. I conversate with a lot of youth (coaching youth sports locally)and this is where I hear it the most. This is where the programming of our youth’s impressionable minds becomes transparent.
Most women (in my encounters anyway) will refer to the charachter of a man in the same breath as anything physical they are looking for. Men are more visual. They seem to initially look for in a woman what would satisfy their physical needs. Women are more mentally stimulated. They seem to initially look for what would satisfy their emotional needs. I think most men (myself included) had to mature to the realization that while what is between their legs will get you there, it is what is between their ears that will keep you there.

“Yes, I think most of white men ive been with were not really in love with me as they pretended but more with what i represented, smthg different! exotic but i do think they really think that we are better! maybe some fetish ish! and they really love our curves.”
This is why I can’t embrace interracial dating for myself — I don’t to be anyone’s exotic experiment, fetish, or what have you, and I do know there are men out there who chase after black women because of the sexuality stereotype. We have too much history to buy into that. I can’t do it.
Now I’ve wondered how black men feel about non-black women who hold obvious stereotypes about their sexuality, i.e. black men are well-endowed, better in bed, etc. Somehow I don’t think it’s as much an issue for some of them, lol.

@ JDs Revenge: From what University did you get your degree? As a black woman married to a dark skinned black man with 2 degrees, my standards for a partner in life had nothing to do with the color of his skin. Black women listen to me: I have dealt with ignorant, uneducated, limited vocabulary negroes like JD and many other black men and had even given up on finding a good one for a minute. I dated a white man, and an Indian before I met my husband. My husband was different from the start. He was tall, and handsome, but didn’t know it. He wore gl*****es and was what we call a geek or nerd. He was completely different from the black men I dated before. I gave him a chance though. He doesn’t curse, drink, smoke or disrespect me in any way. He works hard and makes very good money. We have 2 beautiful kids, and has enormous “equipment” to work with! Stop giving an audience to these unworthy fellas. If it won’t pull it’s pants up, if it looks like a clone of the next thug, you don’t want that. Raise your standards my sisters. Any man that refers to you out of your name doesn’t deserve your time or attention. I tell my younger siblings to look elsewhere for a man. Date what wants YOU. One of my sisters is married to a latino. I am sick of wasting time and *****e with these silly negroes that aren’t worthy to share the same air with me. Find out if he has a college degree. It’s funny how some Black men claim that they love Black women who are dark-skinned and have natural hair but they always go for the lightest damn-near whitest girl who is a mixed. My complexion id very chocolate and I’ve been natural since I was 16. I got nothing but hate from Black men about my hair and all this crap about how I “used to have ling and pretty hair”.It’s funny though after that I started attracting white and Hispanic men.I love all types of men but Black men tend to be very picky and hypocritical when it comes to women. I’m 18 years old in college I’m with a guy who appreciates my natural hair and my skin and he happens to be white. I never been with a White person before, I was told by my dad to never date white people. My boyfriend doesn’t see me as a some type of “racial experiment” or doesn’t have a fetish for Black women or anything. He just loves me for me and he treats me right and it doesn’t hurt that he likes spending money on me.

Is anyone still here?
Hi, Kzz! I haven’t talked with you in a while.
@Illuminate
“Maybe you’ve found some hidden agenda. Maybe (just maybe), these stereotypes about Black men’s sexuality is one reason that some Black men prefer white women. It is easier to go in a relationship with preconceived “respect” as opposed to having to earn it. Sort of like a built in ego stroker. Damn Syd, that was a good point.”
LOL, I’ve actually had this conversation with friends about the “black buck” stereotype and how it is still an image that exists among some non-blacks. But I don’t see anyone who expresses it as having “respect” for brothers — It seems dehumanizing to me, much like the sexual stereotypes about black women.

A bigger question needs to be asked-
Why is this guy getting all this attention AFTER he got busted at the Buffon Awards for guns????
He was in movies and had success and *****ody gave a real damn about him.
Now that he has been in jail or house arrest for thuggery, all the sudden he deserves mnore attention that our PRESIDENT Obama andn other brothers who have made it without acting like goons.
Then we wonder why our black boys act a fool. Because *****ody gives a damn whne they behave, but do some coonery and you get all the attention.

People are so funny. “A cl*****y picture of TI and Tiny” are you serious? This is Blackmen magazine. Their goal is to sell magazines to MEN. They hardly even have men on the cover. The girl on the left is Black and the girl on the right is Filipino and Puerto Rican and they’re both beautiful.
Sexiest asian alive?
12/4/08, 01:13:am
Sorry that asian girl beside T.I. is “okay”, she’s not ugly but she’s not the sexiest asian alive lol. T.I. should marry Tiny, as much as I could dream of having T.I. like everybody else who likes him, in reality, the man needs to commit to his baby mama. When all the money and hoes are gone, you can only have that one person who can really make you happy…(and that would be ME…I’m playin’!) much love to them both and to their kids
Good for her
12/4/08, 01:32:am
I consider that filipina/puerto rican girl on the right lucky, if she were to go back to asia, they wouldn’t let her be a serious model. Like most other countries, light skin is considered a high status. Sure they love beyonce and will smith and any black actors, but when it comes to their own kind, being white light skinned is the key to being a celeb. And this situation is everywhere, India, Thailand and so on… and of course even in North America. So i give her props, and yet I agree that T.I. and Tiny would’ve been a better cover. I love xscape!

this is insulting……..WHERE ARE THE BLK WOMEN? What kind of bs is this?..now the girl on the left could stay and he should of had a darker blk woman on his right…..see this is what they are feeding young blk boys/men
BUT THEY KNOW WE DON’T LIKE IT AND THEY STILL DO IT..THEY DON’T GIVE A DAMMW HAT BLK WOMEN THINK.

When I first saw the cover of the magazine, it made me laugh. T.I. trying to look like a pimp or player on the cover of the magazine. I would not take the cover of this magazine seriously even though many people raised some value points about the standard of beauty in America. As a woman, I would not want to take a picture like the two women on the magazine cover. I do think the two women are pretty though. I also believe the color of a person’s skin does not make them prettier than someone else. The facial features and personality determines if someone is beautiful and not the color of their skin in my opinion.

“Long story short…..from MY experience men pay more attention to particular physical attributes as opposed to women. Name them? Brah, you aren’t in my circle so what good is that? Do you disagree with my observation? If so, state your opinion. I’m curious.”
_______________________________________________________________
Ok. Men do pay more attention to physical attributes. Do you think that is a “bad” thing?
I asked for some examples of physical attributes that women YOU have spoken to because I wanted to know if YOU thought they were “influenced” by the media to find those attributes “desirable.”
Why is your “circle” relevant?
You want my “opinion” in what respect?

People choosing not to write a favorable comment about a celebrity does not make them a hater. Not everything a celebrity does is good. We all are humans, which mean we are not perfect. We all have different opinions. When I read some posts about celebrities, I think some people are borderline fanatics and not just fans of an entertainer. IMO I understand your opinion (Sandy Moloi), but I just do not agree. I believe in the Fifth Amendment, and I use it every day. The “hater” word seems like a catchall word for comments not favorable to an entertainer.
