After 30 years of fighting the deadly disease, AIDS may be on its way out.

The United Nations annual AIDS report indicated much-needed progress against the disease. Half the people across the world with AIDS are getting treatment and the number of people infected has decreased by 21 percent. This is the third year in a row that deaths related to the disease have decreased.

“Even in this time of financial crisis and a flattening of resources, we are seeing results,” said Michel Sidibe, director of UNAIDS, headquartered in Geneva. “Many things happened in 2011, and I think we can start thinking about the beginning of the end of the epidemic.”

In Africa, better sex education and widespread condom use has resulted in many fewer instances of infection. And drugs one reserved for the elite, are now being given to millions in Africa.

This is all definitely a positive sign and hopefully the beginning of the end for AIDS and its widespread catastrophe.
