Anyway I don’t believe that the govt should bailout the Auto Industry because if that is the case they need to go on a tangent of bailing out every other industry.

what I am sad about is the economy of city of Detroit…they NEED some help in building the city has been falling apart for years and it just needs some true just due. As we see there dude Kilpatrick screwed them if not helping out the auto industry I would love for Obama to distribut some money to Detroit and surrounding cities.

I dont think that we should let them crumble. Only because the actual workers that work at these companies will be losing out. Most of them have already cut parts of their health care benefits to try and cut costs. The employees of these companies didnt have anything to do with the CEO’s and Presidents getting into debt and having to get bailed out. I say, do it for the workers. BUT….there needs to be some stipulations and or strings attached so they wont think that they are getting taxpayers money scott’s free and they’re good.

Shiid…..since we Americans now own AIG and soon to come, the auto industries…..we should all get a free car AND get free insurance. Shiiid, we paid for it.

I don’t know, but the American auto industry plays a huge role in the American economy plus I don’t like the ideal of us having to depend solely on foreign made cars. That’s part of the problem with the oil situation, our dependency on their oil. Look at all the jobs that would be lost. The money that we would spend on foreign cars is money that we could spend at home to stimulate our own economy. I know a lot of us buy imports, but now it would be 100% of us. In actually, we really need to focus on trying to buy American, we are making other countries’ economy flourish while ours decline.

I do feel sorry for the workers that may lose jobs, but GM, Ford and Chrysler make the UGLIEST cars out there. Saturns, Neons, Focus???

American car companies got to keep up and make cars with some style. An inexpensive car doesn’t have to look like it was modeled after something you can buy from the dollar store.

Then we have to look at the salaries of the workers. They make $60 – 70,000 without an education and assembling cars. Now you all know that Toyota and Nissan aren’t paying their Asian workers that much money. That’s why the American car makers are failing.

You are absolutely right. I’m using words that they would use, since I work in Corporate America. “The Trickle Down Affect” is going to be the worse EVER. People don’t yet realize what it is for half the world to be out of work and the other half not feel the affects of it.

SOME of those workers should have seen the writing on the wall when foreign auto makers had people doing the EXACT same job for one third of what they were making.

The Big 3 caved in to the auto unions decades ago and now they are reaping what they sow.

I can just see some of the foreign auto makers laughing hysterically at the thought of giving in to Unions.

They probably needed Unions in order to ensure that they didn’t get taken advantage of or being made to work themselves into an early grave. To ensure that they were getting fair pay and medical insurance.

Ok, though. Let’s say we give the bail out. Then what? The same problems that got them into the mess would still be there:

poor managment
bad image
high expenses

No doubt the original Union was needed to protect the workers. BUT, at some point how can they justify being paid three times the amount of someone doing the EXACT same job AND they are doing it better?

It SUCKS that we’re in this financial crisis and these f’d up, spoiled, irresponsible a$$es need our tax dollars to bail them out…because of the domino effect, and the thousands of people who would lose jobs. Having said that, I think it should be done ALONG WITH a total overhaul of the industry…environmental reform… to coincide with our governments stance on reducing our dependency on foriegn fuel supplies…and there should be major penalties/paybacks that these corporations must pay back to the government in some way that the American people will benefit.

Sorry, it’s a useless battle even with the bailout. A bailout will only prolong the inevitable. UNLESS they can cut expenses to the bare minimum they will not be able to compete. Congress can’t change that fact because 1+1=2. The math will still be the same.

Life isn’t fair. AIG, although underserving, was only given the funds because their failure would have a much larger effect. Not just on the US.

I think that all of us understands how nearly 2 million people may lose their jobs if the Big 3 file bankruptcy or go out of business.

But giving money to the Big 3, even a loan is not going to help them. It’s just like giving money to people on welfare…..it’s throwing good money after bad. Ultimately, it will delay the inevitable. They will keep doing the same until they are forced to change.

Until they can bring their cost structure into line with other auto manufacturers, they will continue to struggle. They need to bring their health care costs in line as well as how they fund their pension plans. They can’t continue to pay retiree’s health care costs. THEY SIMPLY CAN’T AFFORD IT!!

All of us, including auto workers need to understand the new world of “YOYO” (You’re On Your Own). All workers will need to “shoulder” more of their benefits including costs for health care and retirement.

Working for a company that has health insurance, pension, vacation and sick leave will become more and more rare. It’s not that it’s not a great idea, but we simply can’t afford it any more.

We compete in a global economy, not a local or regional one. If a guy can build an SUV in Mexico for $5.00 an hour or China for $6.00 an hour or India for $8.00 an hour, why in hell should the guy in Detroit make $30.00 an hour.

What is the Detroit worker doing that is so superior to what they’re doing in China, Mexico or India? It isn’t brains, technology or experience so why should they be paid a premium. What does a CEO do that is so valuable that they must be paid millions of dollars to do?

Either Mexico, China and India’s wages will have to go up drastically or our wages will have come down. What do you think is going to happen?

The initial reaction is the let the car companies fail. It seems amazing that these private companies should dare come to the government (and, ultimately us, the taxpayers) for help. But there are a number of reasons to approve the bailout.

1) An entire industry will disappear. So many people will become unemployed, further straining the economy and the already overburdened housing market. That will result in more foreclosures because these people will not be able to pay their mortgages and rent.;

2) We cannot allow industries that run our economy to collapse. If we do, the crunch that we are all feeling will be so much worse. Other industries rely on the automobile industry, i.e, advertising agencies, law firms, automobile parts manufacturers, etc. If they lose this business, many of us fact layoffs.; and

3) Our sense of nationalism. What do we make in the U.S.? Practically nothing. If we allow the car industry to fail, we will basically become a country that relies on the imports of other countries.

So, bottom line. We gotta bail them out. It’s just a matter of structuring the bailout so that it does what it is supposed to accomplish; helping our economy.

I think people are too “emotionally” involved in this to make “rational” decisions.

The same argument that the auto workers have will soon be used by the next industry.

America shifted long ago from a manufactoring country to a service based country with out numerous bail outs. People moved on and got other jobs. This will be no different.

I’m not saying that companies should stiff their employees and keep them from promised benefits. That’s bad morally and bad business. But what I am saying is that things have changed. Companies can no longer afford to do that.

When you have a child, you promise to take care of that child until they are young adults. But what if your child wants you to take care of him for the rest of his life. Not only him, but his spouse and his children too. If you are very wealthy and have trust funds, that is no problem. But what if you lose all of your money or get sick. You have made promises, but you are no longer able to keep them.

Do you bankrupt yourself or kill yourself to keep paying when you are no longer able to?

Hey, I went to lunch after my last blog that “was all over the place” – I agree it was, but damn.

Man, I just don’t know WHAT they should do after the bailout, should they get it. However, somebody did mention something about wiping the slate clean for EVERYBODY as far as shelling money out monthly on bills, rent, light n’ gas, etc. I VOTE NOT TO HAVE TO PAY RENT FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS. Now THAT would help me a WHOLE lot.

All I know is… things are only going to get worse. And as far as ‘the people’, meaning us who have to ‘replenish’ this money back by way of our taxes – how the hell you gonna tax those WITHOUT jobs.

Secondly, if the domestic auto companies fail the ripple effect will be catastrophic, affecting retail, health, insurance, and banking. One auto worker’s job supports 8 other jobs in the private sector. To those of you who buy foreign cars, it’s your right, however when you chose to do that you are building up the economy of those nations. Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and the other foreign car companies do not put any of the money they earn into America. They take everything they earn and take it back to their own countries. As americans we should support our own industries, before it’s too late and we end up a third world country.

I honestly don’t believe the CEO’S were to blame for this one. I think the auto industry made strides in quality control, safety and engineering as a whole. All of these things and the prices on the vehicles were (and still are) a great value.

The problem is that the cars they sell they aren’t making a big enough profit on. Save for SUV’s. Those were the only vehicles consistently producing revenue. Once gas shot up that was the death toll.

I think your hubby will be offered one more buy out after Congress grants the bailout. When it is offered he should take the money and run. Again, I think this will occur in about two years but could go longer if gas prices take a while to get back to the $4.00 range. That’s my prediction, hope I’m wrong and everything works out.

ANYway, someone please explain to me how this is going to effect us in 10 years. Total economic meltdown? Great depression? Since everyone seems to know everything in here…

Yes, they are requesting a “loan.” And just like “Uncle Chucky” doesn’t pay his “loans” back, neither may the Big 3.

This dreaded “ripple” effect of lost jobs has been felt in other industries without all the “doom and gloom.” America at one point was the greatest producer of Televisions as well. Toys too. I could go on but they are all being produced somewhere else and the economy survived just fine.

I think that there does need to be a significant change in the way that things are done within each of the companies, however. What jobs did bailing out the financial industry save? How have homeowners benefited from the financial bailout? We still have mortgages, high property taxes; some have high interest rates on home loans. We save the very people that caused our economic situation but will not save an industry that afforded so many the opportunities to provide a life for their families.

For every lost automotive job, another 5 jobs which include mom & pop shops will be lost as well. If you think the financial industry is tanking now, let the big three go under. People will not be paying their mortgage, taxes, no shopping and on an on. This would send us from a recession to a depression.

When will America wake up? The richest and most powerful nation in the world has veterans living on the street, homeless children living on the street, the worst public education system, provides aid for foreign countries and still can’t rebuild New Orleans. $10 billion a month and thousands of lost lives on a war and no jobs at home for those once their tour is over.

I disagree totally too…I live in the Big D and about 80% of the African-Americans that are employed here are employed either directly or indirectly by the automotive industry…how y’all think we come to the family reunions in our cars and money w/o the Big 3? The thing with this multi-million dollar bail out is that once they get these funds, they’re gonna take this money overseas and expand those territories. From my experience, people in foreign countries indulge in anything American, and these CEOs know this. It’s not like these men will ship off their laid-off employees to work overseas. It’s their own fault anyway. They outsourced millions of jobs to Asia for their own greed and expect the American public to be sympathetic? Not me! This bail-out in no way will benefit the people who need it the most, that’s the unfortunate part. These men will most likely fly off to Dubai and create a new life for themselves still at the helm of their corporations.
