CEO’s from Ford, GM, and Chrysler are begging Congress again for more than $30 billion in stacks to prevent them from going under. We say let these niccas collapse, DESTROY AND REBUILD. You give these stupid mofo’s bigtime welfare, they will use it like a crackhead and still wind up going under anyway.

Anyway I don’t believe that the govt should bailout the Auto Industry because if that is the case they need to go on a tangent of bailing out every other industry.
what I am sad about is the economy of city of Detroit…they NEED some help in building the city has been falling apart for years and it just needs some true just due. As we see there dude Kilpatrick screwed them if not helping out the auto industry I would love for Obama to distribut some money to Detroit and surrounding cities.

I dont think that we should let them crumble. Only because the actual workers that work at these companies will be losing out. Most of them have already cut parts of their health care benefits to try and cut costs. The employees of these companies didnt have anything to do with the CEO’s and Presidents getting into debt and having to get bailed out. I say, do it for the workers. BUT….there needs to be some stipulations and or strings attached so they wont think that they are getting taxpayers money scott’s free and they’re good.

Bossip, you really need to do your research, as does Congress. This bailout isn’t just about the auto industry. What people fail to realize is that if the Big 3 go under, so will other companies, such as supppliers, insurance companies etc. If they go under, all those workers won’t have money to spend on groceries, movies, gas, etc. It would be a domino effect and eventually affect just about every industry. The auto industry is the one of if not the top leader in developing new technology here in the states. Many industries fall in line with them after their developments. Can you imagine the U.S having to depend on foreign technology for everything? That’s where we’d be headed. Microsoft and all of the other big tech firms would be adversely affected. Have you thought of what would happen if we engaged in yet another war, who’s going to build the tanks and so forth. Bossip, this isn’t about being *****ed because your car doesn’t run right or your car got repossessed and you’re made. It’s bigger than you and any one person, it’s bigger than Detroit. Put on your thinking caps people.
The thing is if they don’t get the bailout and they do go under, it will only hurt the common people like you and me. So many people will be without work unable to provide for their families….it just isn’t worth taking the chance with how so many people losing their jobs would affect us all….just give’em the damn money it ain’t like the money is gonna go to help out the people who really need it anyways…
I don’t know, but the American auto industry plays a huge role in the American economy plus I don’t like the ideal of us having to depend solely on foreign made cars. That’s part of the problem with the oil situation, our dependency on their oil. Look at all the jobs that would be lost. The money that we would spend on foreign cars is money that we could spend at home to stimulate our own economy. I know a lot of us buy imports, but now it would be 100% of us. In actually, we really need to focus on trying to buy American, we are making other countries’ economy flourish while ours decline.

American car companies got to keep up and make cars with some style. An inexpensive car doesn’t have to look like it was modeled after something you can buy from the dollar store.
Then we have to look at the salaries of the workers. They make $60 – 70,000 without an education and *****embling cars. Now you all know that Toyota and Nissan aren’t paying their Asian workers that much money. That’s why the American car makers are failing.

We aren’t only talking about the big 3, we’re talking about all the supporting vendors, current blue collar workers, retirees, and survivors. So, basically, if you live in the rust belt (MI, OH, IN) and you work in somebodies plant… you’re about to be short. 90% of my family fed their kids from working at an automotive plant. I went to college off of the sweat of my parent’s brow as they worked on the *****embly line (Ford’s Dearborn *****embly), so please don’t marginalize this as anything but the distruction of an economic structure.
Considering the blank check other industries received (banking), it makes me wonder why the blue collar folks have to beg.

You are absolutely right. I’m using words that they would use, since I work in Corporate America. “The Trickle Down Affect” is going to be the worse EVER. People don’t yet realize what it is for half the world to be out of work and the other half not feel the affects of it.
You’ve REALLY got to be living in a bubble somewhere with no TV or radio to know that EVERYBODY EVERYWHERE IS ABOUT TO CATCH HELL!!!
I can see the picture from both sides. I live in a town that survives on auto manufacturing and most people are somehow related to or directly involved in that field. (I thankfully am not)This will become a ghost town if they go under.
However, the car companies kept pushing out gas-guzzling trucks and SUV and the only offensive move to counteract this overindulgence was to offer financial incentives, instead of thinking outside of the box and capitalizing on the ingenuity and creativity of the American people.
So I say, ***** em and start over. Reeducate and rebuild. Reinvest in our infrastructure because we can not keep on the same path. Pay for retraining. It’s a dying dinosaur anyway.

SOME of those workers should have seen the writing on the wall when foreign auto makers had people doing the EXACT same job for one third of what they were making.
The Big 3 caved in to the auto unions decades ago and now they are reaping what they sow.

See, that’s the problem. How can the Big 3 compete when it costs a foreign car maker a third of the amount it costs them?
The Big 3 should of declined the latest contract and trained some new people at a more comparable price.
There are other issues too but I think this was the biggest.

Yes, foreignors can take advantage of American services and that is an economic strain that needs to be addressed. That’s another issue altogether.

It SUCKS that we’re in this financial crisis and these f’d up, spoiled, irresponsible a$$es need our tax dollars to bail them out…because of the domino effect, and the thousands of people who would lose jobs. Having said that, I think it should be done ALONG WITH a total overhaul of the industry…environmental reform… to coincide with our governments stance on reducing our dependency on foriegn fuel supplies…and there should be major penalties/paybacks that these corporations must pay back to the government in some way that the American people will benefit.

Sorry, it’s a useless battle even with the bailout. A bailout will only prolong the inevitable. UNLESS they can cut expenses to the bare minimum they will not be able to compete. Congress can’t change that fact because 1+1=2. The math will still be the same.
Life isn’t fair. AIG, although underserving, was only given the funds because their failure would have a much larger effect. Not just on the US.

I think that all of us understands how nearly 2 million people may lose their jobs if the Big 3 file bankruptcy or go out of business.
But giving money to the Big 3, even a loan is not going to help them. It’s just like giving money to people on welfare…..it’s throwing good money after bad. Ultimately, it will delay the inevitable. They will keep doing the same until they are forced to change.
Until they can bring their cost structure into line with other auto manufacturers, they will continue to struggle. They need to bring their health care costs in line as well as how they fund their pension plans. They can’t continue to pay retiree’s health care costs. THEY SIMPLY CAN’T AFFORD IT!!
All of us, including auto workers need to understand the new world of “YOYO” (You’re On Your Own). All workers will need to “shoulder” more of their benefits including costs for health care and retirement.
Working for a company that has health insurance, pension, vacation and sick leave will become more and more rare. It’s not that it’s not a great idea, but we simply can’t afford it any more.

Everybody keeps talking about the auto companies asking the government for money to help them out, Why didn’t they go the Oil Companies and get a loan? We know the Oil companies made record profits this year, they have a ton of loot and without cars their companies will take a large hit. Will they be asking for a bailout as well.
I betcha GM and Ford will be back before the end of 2009 to ask for additional money.

Yeah, I concur. But really who problem is it. When heavey hitters build a country upon stife. We expect to just work and live good. Not thinking of the strife it’s built on. Why are you making comparisons for Wall Street vs. the Auto Industry?
1. AIG and Wall Street effected BILLIONS, not millions of people
2. the “failure” of Wall Street was CAUSED by Congress relaxing regulations that were originally in place to prevent this very situation
3. the failure of Wall Street would effect the value of dollar and therefore US power.
That HAD to be done. Not fair, but true. It is sad what is happening to the auto industry but to bail them out would be throwing away tax payer dollars.
I think the bail out will go through as well because people will pull the “sympathy” card on legislators.
We compete in a global economy, not a local or regional one. If a guy can build an SUV in Mexico for $5.00 an hour or China for $6.00 an hour or India for $8.00 an hour, why in hell should the guy in Detroit make $30.00 an hour.
What is the Detroit worker doing that is so superior to what they’re doing in China, Mexico or India? It isn’t brains, technology or experience so why should they be paid a premium. What does a CEO do that is so valuable that they must be paid millions of dollars to do?
Either Mexico, China and India’s wages will have to go up drastically or our wages will have come down. What do you think is going to happen?

The initial reaction is the let the car companies fail. It seems amazing that these private companies should dare come to the government (and, ultimately us, the taxpayers) for help. But there are a number of reasons to approve the bailout.
1) An entire industry will disappear. So many people will become unemployed, further straining the economy and the already overburdened housing market. That will result in more foreclosures because these people will not be able to pay their mortgages and rent.;
2) We cannot allow industries that run our economy to collapse. If we do, the crunch that we are all feeling will be so much worse. Other industries rely on the automobile industry, i.e, advertising agencies, law firms, automobile parts manufacturers, etc. If they lose this business, many of us fact layoffs.; and
3) Our sense of nationalism. What do we make in the U.S.? Practically nothing. If we allow the car industry to fail, we will basically become a country that relies on the imports of other countries.
So, bottom line. We gotta bail them out. It’s just a matter of structuring the bailout so that it does what it is supposed to accomplish; helping our economy.

I think people are too “emotionally” involved in this to make “rational” decisions.
The same argument that the auto workers have will soon be used by the next industry.
America shifted long ago from a manufactoring country to a service based country with out numerous bail outs. People moved on and got other jobs. This will be no different.
I’m not saying that companies should stiff their employees and keep them from promised benefits. That’s bad morally and bad business. But what I am saying is that things have changed. Companies can no longer afford to do that.
When you have a child, you promise to take care of that child until they are young adults. But what if your child wants you to take care of him for the rest of his life. Not only him, but his spouse and his children too. If you are very wealthy and have trust funds, that is no problem. But what if you lose all of your money or get sick. You have made promises, but you are no longer able to keep them.
Do you bankrupt yourself or kill yourself to keep paying when you are no longer able to?

The American Auto Industry is teetering on being obsolete. I think this will happen:
1. bailout is granted **with restrictions**
2. struggles continue
3. within two years another bailout is requested
4. second bailout denied
5. bankruptcy filed for
6. Big 3 become niche market selling only cache cars: Mustang, Corvette and a few other recognizable names.

Hey, I went to lunch after my last blog that “was all over the place” – I agree it was, but damn.
Man, I just don’t know WHAT they should do after the bailout, should they get it. However, somebody did mention something about wiping the slate clean for EVERYBODY as far as shelling money out monthly on bills, rent, light n’ gas, etc. I VOTE NOT TO HAVE TO PAY RENT FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS. Now THAT would help me a WHOLE lot.
All I know is… things are only going to get worse. And as far as ‘the people’, meaning us who have to ‘replenish’ this money back by way of our taxes – how the hell you gonna tax those WITHOUT jobs.
THINK ABOUT THIS FOR A MINUTE!
The money on the bailout will be paid back via Our Taxes – BUT IF HALF THE WORLD ISN’T WORKING then you’re still in the same situation than when you received the bailout to begin with.
What I don’t get is why we would give them more than their company is worth. If they help homeowners are they going to give them 10 times what their house is worth? Absolutely not. (And I’m not saying they should help homeowners either.)
I’m sick of everybody *****tin’ on the middle cl*****. Oh so I have to bail out the rich and the lazy welfare receiving *****s? It just ain’t right.

First of all, the domestic auto companies are seeking a loan, a bridge loan to be exact, not a bailout. This loan will be paid back with interest. Secondly, if the domestic auto companies fail the ripple effect will be catastrophic, affecting retail, health, insurance, and banking. One auto worker’s job supports 8 other jobs in the private sector. To those of you who buy foreign cars, it’s your right, however when you chose to do that you are building up the economy of those nations. Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and the other foreign car companies do not put any of the money they earn into America. They take everything they earn and take it back to their own countries. As americans we should support our own industries, before it’s too late and we end up a third world country.

I honestly don’t believe the CEO’S were to blame for this one. I think the auto industry made strides in quality control, safety and engineering as a whole. All of these things and the prices on the vehicles were (and still are) a great value.
The problem is that the cars they sell they aren’t making a big enough profit on. Save for SUV’s. Those were the only vehicles consistently producing revenue. Once gas shot up that was the death toll.
I think your hubby will be offered one more buy out after Congress grants the bailout. When it is offered he should take the money and run. Again, I think this will occur in about two years but could go longer if gas prices take a while to get back to the $4.00 range. That’s my prediction, hope I’m wrong and everything works out.
ANYway, someone please explain to me how this is going to effect us in 10 years. Total economic meltdown? Great depression? Since everyone seems to know everything in here…

@So conscientious – uhh Toyota , Nissan , Honda do put alot of money back in our economy – they actually pay back the loans and are ‘profitable’ companies.They built a plant in San Antonio when alot of our domestic companies were laying cats off and not only paid back the city also gave numerous donations from profit to the local school districts.Alot of the foreign car companies actually are efficient are concerned about those forgotten things like employee safety , give excellent tuition *****istance , retirement. Im all down for supporting the home companies but the market evidence is fairly clear – they build *****ty product. This dreaded “ripple” effect of lost jobs has been felt in other industries without all the “doom and gloom.” America at one point was the greatest producer of Televisions as well. Toys too. I could go on but they are all being produced somewhere else and the economy survived just fine.
This is a Global Economy now. Look at the sales figures for GM, their second largest market is Japan. The old rules no longer apply because now the international markets are all related.

If Ford, GM, and Chrysler are going out of business than the reason is the products aren’t selling. For, the government to bailout these companies with $30 billion dollars is f*ckin absurd. No, I’m familiar with CEO pay and that is ridiculous as well. The only problem with that is the people running them out of business are paying their CEO’s comparable amounts as well. Even with the CEO being overpaid, the product improved drastically in the last 15 years or so. If you give them the bad you have to give them the good too.
Part of the reason the foreign cars were allowed in the first place was due to the Big 3. There was too little competition and they could basically charge whatever they wanted for cars. Oh, and they were slow to adjust to the original “oil crisis” of the late 70’s which led to the explosion in sales of foreign cars. The country never looked back after they realized foreign cars were of more quality.

The big three auto makers aren’t the only ones in this situation of having heavy legacy costs. Your local, state and federal governments are all in the same boat. So are many large corporations and utility companies. Some county and state governments are going to be bankrupted by paying pensions and healthcare for their firefighters, cops and other government workers.
Tax revenues will be declining for a while.
I think that it’s important for us to think globally about these issues…….think about it from a CEO point of view instead of a janitor.
When CEOs and Presidents make decisions, they make them about systems and processes…..not people.
What can be done cheaper?
Where can it be done cheaper?
How much will be saved?
Who has the most talented workforce?
How can we hide our outsourcing from our investors?
What will get the stock price up?
How much bonus will I receive if I cut costs?
They don’t think about you losing your job and not being able to afford rent for you and your three children. They don’t think about your husband has been just diagnosed with cancer. They don’t care that “good ole Bob” has been here for 29 years and has another year to go before he is eligible for full retirement. THEY DON’T CARE!!

I think that the companies should be bailed out for the sake of maintaining jobs. I think that there does need to be a significant change in the way that things are done within each of the companies, however. Ignorance is bliss until the reality of a full blown eeconomic collapse ensues. Some of you saying let them fall have no idea on how the American economy is interwined. $52 million is actually sort of cheap when some hedge fund managers get hundreds of millions.
The point everyone is trying to make is take a look at what works for others and emulate them where you can. All CEO’s are overpaid so the $52 mil falls in line with the people you are emulating.
Three places don’t measure up to the competition: employee compensation, car sale volume and profit per vehicle.
A bailout and reducing CEO pay to a $1 (like they agreed to) isn’t going to change these three factors.

It’s amazing to me that some people are upset with a possible loan (NOT BAILOUT) to the automotive industry when so many African Americans, from the corporate offices to the plant floor, rely on this industry. We are spending $10 billion a month on a war based off a lie, but our country has the audacity to question companies trying to save jobs.
What jobs did bailing out the financial industry save? How have homeowners benefited from the financial bailout? We still have mortgages, high property taxes; some have high interest rates on home loans. We save the very people that caused our economic situation but will not save an industry that afforded so many the opportunities to provide a life for their families.
For every lost automotive job, another 5 jobs which include mom & pop shops will be lost as well. If you think the financial industry is tanking now, let the big three go under. People will not be paying their mortgage, taxes, no shopping and on an on. This would send us from a recession to a depression.
When will America wake up? The richest and most powerful nation in the world has veterans living on the street, homeless children living on the street, the worst public education system, provides aid for foreign countries and still can’t rebuild New Orleans. $10 billion a month and thousands of lost lives on a war and no jobs at home for those once their tour is over.

It is a loan. To the people that commented on race. If GM goes under there will be a lot of african american families that will suffer. Not only will Detroit suffer, the entire US will suffer. Don’t forget about suppliers in all states, restaurants and businesses that count on the employees to spend money. This would be devastating. All we ask as employess of the big three is that everyone please have a open mind and the fallout/ramifications of letting this companies go under. It will effect you one way or the other. Do you know how many black people would lose their jobs if Congress allowed them to crash and burn? If the financial industry that received $700 Billion in a hurry would do what was intended with the money, then the Detroit 3 would not have to ask. So you really need to direct your frustration to the initial $700 Billion that was given away. I am sorry, but the car industry will affect too many low-income families for you to be saying to let them CRASH AND BURN. Come on! I enjoy your site, but I disagree with your statement.
I disagree totally too…I live in the Big D and about 80% of the African-Americans that are employed here are employed either directly or indirectly by the automotive industry…how y’all think we come to the family reunions in our cars and money w/o the Big 3? And it really gets to me that the Big 3 have to come beggin’ and grovelin’ for money and had to have a “plan” and all that B.S. when wallstreet like AIG and Citibank were hollerin’ that they were going under all they said was “how much do you need?”…Come on now…it’s a loan…not a handout…sheesh…
The thing with this multi-million dollar bail out is that once they get these funds, they’re gonna take this money overseas and expand those territories. From my experience, people in foreign countries indulge in anything American, and these CEOs know this. It’s not like these men will ship off their laid-off employees to work overseas. It’s their own fault anyway. They outsourced millions of jobs to Asia for their own greed and expect the American public to be sympathetic? Not me! This bail-out in no way will benefit the people who need it the most, that’s the unfortunate part. These men will most likely fly off to Dubai and create a new life for themselves still at the helm of their corporations.
I got another idea. Since the concern is what will happen to the people working in these car companies; which is a very real issue, give the bailout money directly to the employees in the form of pensions and savings and don’t give it to the automakers, form public works projects that can hire significant numbers of people who were unemployed because of these failed businesses, and force the manufacturers to actually create quality products.
If a driving principle of capitalism is supply and demand and a company is not creating the right product to meet consumer demand, under capitalistic principles they need to naturally evolve (or fail) in order to get better. Handing them money will encourage them to continue making *****ty products.
Otherwise, by basically handing them this money you’re essentially giving candy to a greedy kid. They have a track record of being irresponsible, yet you enable them by giving them more responsibility. And if this money runs dry without any improvement in their services or the economy, which could possibly happen given American automakers’ recent poor decision making, what next?
The government needs to take immediate action against the automakers now in order to prevent even more substantial losses in the near future.
